• Should I include the binary in a Rails plugin or not?

  Hello. I'm trying to roll out a little Rails plugin that is basically is just a wrapper to a 7zip archiver. Should I include the 7zip binaries for windows, mac and linux with it or explain to user that it's a dependency and they need to get it working. I know it's not that difficult to install a 7zip, but what is the best practice in general. The reason I'm asking is cause I've ran so many times into gems that need some sort of dependency that doesn't compile properly or is not available in ready form for the OS in question and then I end up spending have a day hunting down for a binary or a way to compile the program. (Have happened to me both on Mac and Windows, not on Debian so far. )

• Is it better to echo javascript in raw format with php, or echo a script include that has been minif

  Hey guys quick question, I am currently echoing a lot of javascript that is based conditionally on login status and other variables. I was wondering if it would be better to simply echo the script include like <script type="text/javascript" src="javascript/openlogin.js"></script> that has been run through a minifying program and been gzipped or to echo the full script in raw format. The latter suggestion is messier to me but it reduces http requests while the latter would probably be smaller but take more cpu? Just wondering what some other people think. Thanks in advance for any advice.

• How can I include .pdf files when I publish but not in a search and replace in visual studio?

  More specifically my problem is if I include a pdf in my project and set its build action to content so it gets copied to the server when I publish, is there a way to exclude it from visual studios search and replace feature. Would a post build action be a solution to this? I just don't want anybody to do a global search and replace in my project and mess up the pdfs... I know I just said a mouth full so let me know if you need clarification. Thanks!!!

• Qt C++ signals and slots did not fire

  I have programmed Qt a couple of times already and I really like the signals and slots feature. But now, I guess I'm having a problem when a signal is emitted from one thread, the corresponding slot from another thread is not fired. The connection was made in the main program. This is also my first time to use Qt for ROS which uses CMake. The signal fired by the QThread triggered their corresponding slots but the emitted signal of my class UserInput did not trigger the slot in tflistener where it supposed to. I have tried everything I can. Any help? The code is provided below.   I have a binary that's used as a command-line tool to manipulate some files - tool.exe. I would like to include this in my Visual Studio 2008 project and use it from my C# code. I have it in a folder called "Resources" which also has some other files my project uses. I would like to do something like Process myproc = Process.Start("Resources/tool.exe"); but I believe C# has an issue with this because it's looking in the file system rather than the project. How can this be done?

Following the tutorial given in haystack site, I have urlpatterns = pattern('', r'^search/', include('haystack.urls')) I found haystack installed in /usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/haystack and located urls.py there. It has urlpatterns=patterns('haystack.views', url(r'^$', SearchView(), name='haystack_search'),) I thought the second argument of url() should be callable object. I looked at the views.py and SearchView is a class. What is going on here? What's get called eventually?

• Is there a way to include commas in CSV columns without breaking the formatting?

  I've got a two column CSV with a name and a number. Some people's name use commas, for example "Joe Blow, CFA." This comma breaks the CSV format, since it's interpreted as a new column. I've read up and the most common prescription seems to be replacing that character, or replacing the delimiter, with a new value (e.g. "this|that|the, other"). I'd really like to keep the comma separator (I know excel supports other delimiters but other interpreters may not). I'd also like to keep the comma in the name, as "Joe Blow| CFA" looks pretty silly. Is there a way to include commas in CSV columns without breaking the formatting, for example by escaping them?

  Hi, I'm new to PHP frameworks, and currently I'm trying Zend Framework (ZF). I'm old fashioned when it comes to installing software, I like to install apache/mysql/php all separetely since I find easier and it gives me more control of it. It seems that the "encouraged" way to develop with Zend Framework is using the Zend (CE) Server. I personally don't like this idea of a app install everything else (PHP/Apache and so on). From what I've seen if I include Zend Framework Library in php.ini path I'm ready to go. So is there any real advantage to use the Full Zend (CE) Server??

• What is the smallest Windows header I can #include to define DWORD?

  I have a small header file of my own which declares a couple of functions, one of which has a return type of DWORD. I'm reluctant to drag in windows.h just to get the official definition of this type since that file is huge, and my header will be used in a number of source modules that don't otherwise need it. Of course, in practice I know that DWORD is just unsigned int, but I'd prefer the more hygienic approach of including an official header file if possible. On this page it says that DWORD is defined in windef.h, but unfortunately including just this small file directly leads to compilation errors -- apparently it expects to be included by other headers. (Also, the fact that my file is a header file also means I can't just declare WIN32_LEAN_AND_MEAN, since the source file that #includes my file might need this to be left undefined.) Any ideas? I know it's not the end of the world -- I can just continue to #include <windows.h> -- but thought someone might have a better idea!

• Installing Gtk2 on portable strawberry

  I downloaded "strawberry-perl-5.12.2.0-portable" and "gtk+-bundle_2.22.1-20101227_win32". I extracted strawberry-perl in some directory and there I put gtk folder with gtk stuff. In portableshell.bat I changed Path env and added: "%drivep%\gtk\bin;%drivep%\gtk\lib;". Don't ask me why I added lib directory, I saw that some guy added it in some website.   Background The idea is this: Person provides contact information for online book purchase Book, as a PDF, is marked with a unique hash Person downloads book PDF passwords are annoying and extremely easy to circumvent. The ideal process would be something like: Generate hash based on contact information Store contact information and hash in database Acquire book lock Update an "include" file with hash text Generate book as PDF (using pdflatex) Apply hash to book Release book lock Send email with book download link Technologies The following technologies can be used (other programming languages are possible, but libraries will likely be limited to those supplied by the host): C, Java, PHP LaTeX files PDF files Linux Question What programming techniques (or open source software) should I investigate to: Embed a unique hash (or other mark) to a PDF Create a collusion-attack resistant mark Develop a non-fragile (e.g., PDF -> EPS -> PDF still contains the mark) solution Research I have looked at the following possibilities: Steganography Natural Language Processing (NLP) Convert blank pages in PDF to images; mark those images; reassemble PDF LaTeX watermark package ImageMagick Steganograhy requires keeping a master copy of the images, and I'm not sure if the watermark would survive PDF -> EPS -> PDF, or other types of conversion. LaTeX creates an image cache, so any steganographic process would have to intercept that process somehow. NLP introduces grammatical errors. Inserting blank pages as images is immediately suspect; it is easy to replace suspicious blank pages. The LaTeX watermark package draws visible marks. ImageMagick draws visible marks. • A Digg-like rotating homepage of popular content, how to include date as a factor?

  I am building an advanced image sharing web application. As you may expect, users can upload images and others can comments on it, vote on it, and favorite it. These events will determine the popularity of the image, which I capture in a "karma" field. Now I want to create a Digg-like homepage system, showing the most popular images. It's easy, since I already have the weighted Karma score. I just sort on that descendingly to show the 20 most valued images. The part that is missing is time. I do not want extremely popular images to always be on the homepage. I guess an easy solution is to restrict the result set to the last 24 hours. However, I'm also thinking that in order to keep the image rotation occur throughout the day, time can be some kind of variable where its offset has an influence on the image's sorting. Specific questions: Would you recommend the easy scenario (just sort for best images within 24 hours) or the more sophisticated one (use datetime offset as part of the sorting)? If you advise the latter, any help on the mathematical solution to this? Would it be best to run a scheduled service to mark images for the homepage, or would you advise a direct query (I'm using MySQL) As an extra note, the homepage should support paging and on a quiet day should include entries of days before in order to make sure it is always "filled" I'm not asking the community to build this algorithm, just looking for some advise :)

  I have legacy code (I didn't write it) that always included the encoding attribute, but recompiling it to D2010, TXMLDocument doesn't include the enconding anymore. Because the XML data have accented characters both on tags and data, TXMLDocument.LoadFromFile simply throws EDOMParseErros saying that an invalid character is found on the file. Relevant code: Doc := TXMLDocument.Create(nil); try Doc.Active := True; Doc.Encoding := XMLEncoding; RootNode := Doc.CreateElement('Test', ''); Doc.DocumentElement := RootNode; <snip> //Result := Doc.XMl.Text; Doc.SaveToXML(Result); // Both lines gives the same result On older versions of Delphi, the following line is generated: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> On D2010, this is generated: <?xml version="1.0"?> If I change manually the line, all works like always worked in the last years. UPDATE: XMLEncoding is a constant and is defined as follow XMLEncoding = 'ISO-8859-1';

• AngularJS: How to make angular load script inside ng-include?

  Hey I am building a web page with angular. The problem is that there are somethings already build without angular and I have to include them as well The problem is this. I have something like this in my main.html: <ngInclude src="partial.html"> </ngInclude> And my partial.html has something like this <h2> heading 1 <h2> <script type="text/javascript" src="static/js/partial.js"> </script> And my partial.js has nothing to do with angularjs. nginclude works and I can see the html, but I can not see the javascript file being loaded at all. I know how to use firebug/ chrome-dev-tool, but I can not even see the network request being made. What am I doing wrong? I knwo angular has some special meaning to script tag. Can I override it?

• Why doesn't the Java Collections API include a Graph implementation?

  I’m currently learning the Java Collections API and feel I have a good understanding of the basics, but I’ve never understood why this standard API doesn’t include a Graph implementation. The three base classes are easily understandable (List, Set, and Map) and all their implementations in the API are mostly straightforward and consistent. Considering how often graphs come up as a potential way to model a given problem, this just doesn’t make sense to me (it’s possible it does exist in the API and I’m not looking in the right place of course). Steve Yegge suggests in one of his blog posts that a programmer should consider graphs first when attacking a problem, and if the problem domain doesn’t fit naturally into this data structure, only then consider the alternative structures. My first guess is that there is no universal way to represent graphs, or that their interfaces may not be generic enough for an API implementation to be useful? But if you strip down a graph to its basic components (vertices and a set of edges that connect some or all of the vertices) and consider the ways that graphs are commonly constructed (methods like addVertex(v) and insertEdge(v1, v2)) it seems that a generic Graph implementation would be possible and useful. Thanks for helping me understand this better.
