• Couple folders went 'access denied' in Windows. Why and how to fix?

  So, after a failed Windows 7 install, I put XP back on, and had a adrenaline shot when I got an access denied on a couple of my backed up folders. I already tried the instructions here at Microsoft KB, but it didn't fix it. I did add myself with full permissions on the main section of the Security tab, though, and that gave me access into the folder (I could do it in XP Home because of the Windows NT SP4 Security Configuration Manager). However, it appears some subfolders are still inaccessible. Two questions, then. Why exactly did this happen and how do I fix it?

• IIS FTP service - download timeouts and restarts getting the data twice

  We have an IIS FTP site on a Windows Server 2003 x64 machine. Application Layer Gateway service is disabled (so http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931130 does not apply). Windows Firewall service is disabled as well. Connection timeout for the FTP site (there is only one) is set to 1,200 seconds = 20 minutes. An external client can connect to the site, list directory contents and download small files. When a client attempts to download a large file (eg, if the download continues for 3 minutes, which is still under 20 minutes, but relatively long), the server sends all data, then the connection times out, the client issues REST / RETR commands attempting to restart the download since after the last byte (which I believe should succeed and receive exactly 0 bytes), and the server behaves as if the client tried to restart after byte 0, that is, it sends the entire file all over. Any ideas on how to fix this?

• Caching API Proxy Server

  I need to have a server that caches API responses and then forwards them along to a desktop app. I don't really have much experience with this, so I have a few questions. First of all, what kind of server should I get? I already use Linode for my websites, so ideally I'd like to go with them. I expect to get anywhere from 30 million to 40 million requests to my proxy server each month. Will a 512 Linode be able to support that? Also, is there any software out there that does this already, or will I have to write my own? The API responses are roughly 10 KB each on average, so doing the math, that's a lot of data each month. Should I just add more transfer to whatever server I buy, or can I somehow compress the API responses before sending them off to the user? Thanks for any help.

• Effect of NonBlockingSendSpecialBuffering setting on Windows

  Recently I ran into some issue related to the UDP sending on Windows. When the application tries to send the packets over UDP in non-blocking mode, often it received socket error 10035 (WSAEWOULDBLOCK) in the send(), so likely that the socket buffer is full. I only seen this issue on Windows 2008 and did not see the same problem on Windows 2003. I was doing some research and found the following article (although it mention TCP) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823764 At the bottom it mentioned updating of the registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters\NonBlockingSendSpecialBuffering to 1 But it didn't include further details Would anyone know what is the effect of setting this registry value and what does it do? I tried to research on the web but unable to find any reference, including the msdn website. Any help would be appreciated.

• best filesystem for an aws s3 like service

  Hi! I need to build a fault tolerant, highly available key/value storage (no posix, only same functionaluty as S3) using cheap existing hardware. The storage should be able to handle several billions of items. The maximum size of items is around 1GB, most are only several KB. What's the best software/ filesystem for this task? I already had a brief look at mogilefs, mongodb (grid-fs) & glusterfs but I'm not really sure which is stable & fault tolerant enough. The simpler the setup and later expansion the better :). Corin

• IIS reveals internal IP address in content-location field - fix

  Referring: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q218180/, there is a known issue in IIS4/5/6 whereby it will reveal the internal IP of a web server in the content-location field of the HTTP header. We have IIS 6. I have tried the fix suggested, but it has not worked. The website is configured to send all requests to ASP.NET, and I am wondering if this is why the fix, which addresses IIS configuration, has not worked for us. If this is the case, how would we fix this in ASP.NET? We need to fix this issue in order to pass a security audit.

• No Editor in Directory Utility

  I'm on OSX 10.6.8 and would like to enable the root user. I found Apple's KB article, however this point Click the lock in the Directory Utility window. Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK. Choose Enable Root User from the Edit menu. is not possible, because there is no "Edit Menu" Icon! I'm logged in as admin, but I only see "Services" and "Search Policy". Repeat, I do not see the "Editor", it's just not there. What gives? How it should be: Directory Utility

  I just set up a 3 node system with ip addresses "192.168.0.101", "192.168.0.102", "192.168.0.103". • VSS error 12293 after system disk clone (Win2003)

  Hi! After cloning a windows 2003 installation from a single drive onto two mirrored drives using Acronis Disk Director, VSS no longer works, filing events 12293 and 7001 when trying to use backup tools, and additionally giving error 0x8004230f when accessing the Shadow copy tab of disk properties. I've google-researched this quite throughly, and found a suggested fix[1]: replacing the MBR signature of the disk. This would cause windows to invalidate old shadow copy information, which supposedly would make it all work again. However, I am a bit nervous over this... Is there a possiblity of messing this up somehow, because of the mbr originating from a single disk install, and now residing on a raid mirror? Has anyone here had this problem and solved it?   Didnt notice this being asked so here i am. I have a problem with specific registry key: NvCplDaemon"="RUNDLL32.EXE C:\\Windows\\system32\\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup" Problem is that i have tried many variations of the reg file like: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run "NvCplDaemon"=-"RUNDLL32.EXE C:\\Windows\\system32\\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup" and Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] "NvCplDaemon"=-"RUNDLL32.EXE C:\\Windows\\system32\\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup" And they all seemingly complete but the key remains.It is not locked or something.I can delete and recreate it manually any time.Im guessing there is some small spelling error on my file because i think i have followed MS instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310516 This is how it looks in Registry: Someone?

• How to keep windows 2003 Daylight Saving values updated

  My web app runs on windows 2003 .Net 3.5 I have users from Israel (GMT +2), and Israel switched to Daylight saving time on 26/3/10 so now it's (GMT +3). I use TimeZoneInfo.ConvertTime that doesn’t know the Daylight saving time switch is on 26/3/10 so it still converts to GMT +2. Where can I find an update that handles 2011 2012… ? Will I need to update my windows every year to get the DST right? Thanks.

• activesync not working with forms based authentication

  I have an Exchange 2003 SP2 single backend server with an SSL cert. I was having trouble getting OMA to work so I found a MS article about making a reg hack and creating a new Exchange-OMA virtual directory. I am able to connect and access content from my mailbox by using secure mail.domainname.com/oma and using my credentials. ActiveSync was not working on a Windows mobile phone or iPhone. I found another article about using Forms Based Authenication and SSL on a single Exchange server environment and the fix was to elliminate FBA and SSL for the Exchange virtual directory. That allows ActiveSync to now work. I have very few mobile users, but they are management, so I need to make ActiveSync work but I would like to get back to using SSL. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817379 Any ideas about this setup? • Print spooler consumes over 1GB of memory

  Suddenly, on a Windows Vista Business workstation I manage, the Windows print spooler service is consuming over 1GB of memory. I got the call this morning that the user could not print. I discovered all printers were missing from the Printers applet in Control Panel. I rebooted the machine, and at first the printers were still missing, but after a few minutes (and much banging my head against the wall) they suddenly appeared. I stopped worrying about it until later today it happened again to the same workstation. To my knowledge, nothing has changed on the computer. No new printers have been added, no new print drivers would have been installed, and no new software is being used. I tried clearing out the spooler folder (C:\Windows\System32\spooler\printers) which did have four print jobs from this morning, but the problem persists after restarting the spooler service. When starting the service, it starts out using 824 KB of memory, then after about 20 seconds it starts creeping up about 10MB each second until it stabilizes around 1.8GB.

  I need to configure SSL for RDP, and am following the instructions described here: http://thelazyadmin.com/blogs/thelazyadmin/archive/2007/01/26/Configure-RDP-over-SSL-with-SelfSSL.aspx My client's server already has a SSL certificate (.cer file), and I attempted to import it so that Terminal Services would recognize it. Unfortunately, when I click "Edit" from the "RDP-tcp Properties" dialog (for a Terminal Services certificate), no certificate appears. How can I get the certificate to appear here? Thanks!

• Powershell and long-running external tools?

  I'm trying to compact a MS-Access database using JetComp.exe using a powershell script. Here is the operative lines: # 4. Run JetComp LogWrite("Begin: Running JetComp") .\JETCOMP.EXE -src: $srcDB -dest: $dstDB | Out-Null #Run this command and wait for it to finish... IfErrorExit("Error Compacting Database") LogWrite("End: Running JetComp") The JETCOMP.EXE program seems to complete long before it is actually finished and the $dstDB ends up being smaller than the compact should even make it. Initially ($srcDB) it's about 1.8 GB and by the time the command finishes it's about 300,000 kb (about 0.29 gb) that's a pretty long way off from 1.8 gb which when compacted manually ends up being about 1.6 gb. Is there some sort of timeout I don't know about in powershell scripts? P.S. I know that when running JETCOMP.EXE manually, that the system often detects it as "not responding" even though it's actually getting the job done, and waiting long enough will allow it to complete.

• Windows 2003 Server R2SP2 throws even ID 2269 after installing Excel WebPart in MOSS3

  We recently added an Excel workbook webpart (read only excel file - no editing) on our Sharepoint 2007 server. Once we did that, approximately 3-4 times an hour event ID 2269 is shown in the Application Log and a few minutes after that, an event id 1002 is displayed in the system long and the Sharepoint Offfce Servers Application pool shuts down. We've already check the "Bypass traverse checking and DCOM settings) per the MS KB and I have opened a ticket with MS Support. Problem is that MS Suppoert (sharepoint) thinks it is an IIS problem and the IIS people think it is a Sharepoint issue. Anyone else seen this problem? If we remove the Excel webpart, everything goes back to normal. The App Pools, SP and SP Central Admin sites are all using the same domain service account. Thanks in advance, Phil

• Avoid Powerpoint(/Word) 2010 creating temporary files in working directory

  When opening a temporary file, Powerpoint 2010 usually creates a temporary, hidden file called ~$filename.pptx in the same directory. This is undesirable, since it can cause unnecessary activity with e.g. Dropbox. Furthermore, the "Documents" folder should not be used for temporary files -- we have the %TEMP% folder for that. So, is it possible to have Powerpoint create its temporary files in %TEMP% instead? • I can't uncheck the "read-only" attribute from a folder on a Windows Server 2008 machine.

  Hello everybody. I have a folder (C:\temp) on a windows server 2008 R2 installation. Initially it has the Read Only attribute checked, but I want to uncheck it. I am able to uncheck it and it even shows me the loading process (it is showing me that it is going through all the subfolders), but after I press OK and I go back to properties, it still remains checked as Read Only. • Create MAPI profile for exchange 2007 without Outlook

  Hi, I have a windows server 2003 where I have to create a MAPI profile to read incoming emails of exchange 2007, using a custom utility. So I want the mail icon to appear in the control panel to configure e-mail accounts. I googled a lot and seems that there was a way to do it with an utility called newprof.exe but it is no longer available: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306962 I don't have an outlook license so I need a free way to create MAPI profiles in this server, either installing a free client or some ms tool. • I would like to prevent these entries from being added to the eventlog.

  Our client's application EventLog is getting filled up with warnings due to a bug in the Microsoft SQL Server report viewer control, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973219. They have thousands of users running reports so this is making their eventlog hard to use and they want them removed on a frequent basis. I tried using PowerShell to remove the events, but that does not seem possible. Is there a way to prevent these entries from being written to the event log in the first place? I'm thinking I would like to filter out events where event source="ASP.NET 2.0.50727.0", eventId ="1309" and Message contains "Reserved.ReportViewerWebControl.axd"

• Server 2008 R2 .Net 4 Programs running from Network share won't work

  we have several .Net Apps stored on a Network share on our old Server (Windows Server 2003). These Apps get called by Windows 7 32bit Clients and work perfectly fine. We recently wanted to upgrade our Server to Windows Server 2008 R2 and moved the Apps from the old share to our new share on the new Server. The problem started right afterwards since all of our .Net Programs won't start anymore from the new share (2008 R2). The Error that comes up is: "This application could not be started." and with a link to Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2715633 (This Error also shows up when i start a simple console HelloWorld from the server share created in VS2012) Does anyone have any Idea why this is not working anymore on the new Servershare?   I need to configure IIS 7.5 (Server 2008 R2) to be FIPS 140.2 compliant. Specifically, this involves disabling all SSL protocols other than TLS 1.0. I have set the following registry keys: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\SSL 2.0\Server HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\SSL 3.0\Server HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\PCT 1.0\Server to Enabled(DWORD) = 0 as per this KB, but SSL Labs' checker says "SSL 2.0+ Upgrade Support" is enabled. (Everything other than that and TLS 1.0 is not available, so we're getting somewhere). It also says "FIPS ready - no" - presumably because SSL 2.0+ Upgrade Support is still enabled. serversniff.net says SSL 2.0 is turned off, and doesn't say anything about SSL 2.0+ Upgrade Support. Could this be an anomaly with SSL Labs' checker?

• Copying Firefox profile

  My computer (well, Windows XP) failed. I got everything off the HD, including my Firefox profile, which I especially wanted because I had lots of open unsaved tabs in my current session (yes, I know that's bad practice!), but also to rescue bookmarks etc. I've now got Windows 7, and reinstalled Firefox. I've read the instructions on the Firefox website about creating new profiles, and I'm not sure they're very intuitive. It says that you can copy all the contents from an old profile into a new 'default' one, which I have done (http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-Firefox-profiles). However, when I open Firefox, the data from this profile isn't being used and Firefox doesn't seem to recognise the data that's there. What am I doing wrong?!

  I'm trying to apply a registry fix for an Outlook/O365 issue on a user's account. The issue is that "regedit" is blocked by a domain GPO. I'm able to run "gpedit" using the local admin account. Question : When I run "regedit as the local admin, am I modifying the registry for the local admin user or the domain user who's actually logged onto the workstation? I'm trying to apply the following fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2843677 Also, the path for the above mentioned registry should end in " \Preferences" which is what I'm unable to locate. I'm able to navigate up until \Outlook. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. Running Outlook 2010.
