  • Programming languages with extensible syntax

    I have only a limited knowledge of Lisp (trying to learn a bit in my free time) but as far as I understand Lisp macros allow to introduce new language constructs and syntax by describing them in Lisp itself. This means that a new construct can be added as a library, without changing the Lisp compiler / interpreter. This approach is very different from that of other programming languages. E.g., if I wanted to extend Pascal with a new kind of loop or some particular idiom I would have to extend the syntax and semantics of the language and then implement that new feature in the compiler. Are there other programming languages outside the Lisp family (i.e. apart from Common Lisp, Scheme, Clojure (?), Racket (?), etc) that offer a similar possibility to extend the language within the language itself?

I am thinking to leave this career and start programming. I am interested in Java, However I have no programming experience at all. In university we have seen Java which was in 2001-2002.     We have many great tools which helps a lot when programming, such as good programmers text editors, IDEs, debuggers, version control systems etc. Some of the tools are more or less "must have" tools for getting the job done (e.g. compilers). There are still always tools which do help a lot, but still don't get so much attention, for various reasons, for instance, when they were released, they were ahead of their time and now are more or less forgotten. I feel i need a change and wanted to start programming, i have some experience (low-midd) with python and lisp, right now i am starting with c++ (stroustrup book)... My problem is that i am not sure where is a good place to start getting real experience (jobs, projects, etc... to keep motivation up), how much do i need to know to start looking for this and what other things i need to know to be a better programmer...     I have this very simple sql statement: SELECT max_dose FROM psychotropes WHERE (patient_meds.psychotrope = psychotrope_name) AND (patient_meds.patient_id = 12) when I try to run it in Visual Studio 2008, it tells me "The multi-part 'patient_meds.psychotrope' identifier could not be bound" it's weird, because I did set a relationship between the two tables in the diagram viewer

    hello i installed ubuntu using wubit inside the windows and started working on it then i got this error afer updating [0.8879153] kernel panic -not syncing VFS unable to mount fs unknow block (8.3) and i can't user rescue mode and it's give me another error no filesystem could mount root ..... i looked at grub folder and didn' find any file on disks/boot/grub/ so i tryed to user super grub to fix it but it didn' work and it keep giving me. any idea plz .

    I want to rewrite TCP/IP streams. Ettercap's etterfilter command lets you perform simple live replacements of TCP/IP data based on fixed strings or regexes. Example: http://ettercap.sourceforge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2833 I would like to rewrite streams based on my own filter program instead of just simple string replacements. Anyone have an idea of how to do this? Is there anything other than Ettercap that can do live replacement like this, maybe as a plugin to a VPN software or something? Thanks!

    Why did programmers ever start using status codes? I mean, I guess I could imagine this might be useful back in the days when a text string was an expensive resource. WAYYY back then. But even after we had megabytes of memory to work with, we continued to use them. What possible advantage could there be for obfuscating the meaning of an error message or status message behind a status code?

    I have a custom control deriving from HtmlImage control which I cant get to show up on toolbox, it says "There are no components in '...\bin\Debug\ImageCustomControl.dll' that can be placed on the toolbox.".     Hello, I am trying to implement my own transport layer protocol in Linux for an experiment. I am going to use socket interface and add my protocol using sock_register. For the proto_ops i can see that the parameters for the sendmsg and recvmsg are (struct kiocb *iocb, struct socket *sock, struct msghdr *msg, size_t len, int flags). But there are three types of user api's send, sendto, sendmsg. Of these three only sendmsg contains a parameter for msghdr. I find that the other two api's are incompatible with the parameters supplied by the kernel to my kernel-space sendmsg function. So what happens when we use send and sendto user-space api's?     Hello Is there a tutorial for migration from plain udp sockets (linux, C99/C++, recv syscall is used) to the raw sockets? According to http://aschauf.landshut.org/fh/linux/udp_vs_raw/ch03s04.html raw socket is much faster than udp. Application is client-server. client is proprietary and must use exactly same procotol as it was with udp server. But server can be a bit faster with raw sockets. What parts of udp I must to implement in server? Is there a "quick migration" libraries?

  • Are Scala "continuations" just a funky syntax for defining and using Callback Functions?

    And I mean that in the same sense that a C/Java for is just a funky syntax for a while loop. I still remember when first learning about the for loop in C, the mental effort that had to go into understanding the execution sequence of the three control expressions relative to the loop statement. Seems to me the same sort of effort has to be applied to understand Continuations (in Scala and I guess probably other languages). And then there's the obvious follow-up question... if so, then what's the point? It seems like a lot of pain (language complexity, programmer errors, unreadable programs, etc) for no gain.

  • How to maintain a persistant network-connection between two applications over a network?

    I was recently approached by my management with an interesting problem - where I am pretty sure I am telling my bosses the correct information but I really want to make sure I am telling them the correct stuff. I am being asked to develop some software that has this function: An application at one location is constantly processing real-time data every second and only generates data if the underlying data has changed in any way. On the event that the data has changed send the results to another box over a network Maintains a persistent connection between the both machines, altering the remote box if for some reason the network connection went down From what I understand, I imagine that I need to do some reading on doing some sort of TCP/IP socket-level stuff. That way if the connection is dropped the remote location will be aware that the data it has received may be stale. However management seems to be very convinced that this can be accomplished using SOAP. I was under the impression that SOAP is more or less a way for a client to initiate a procedure from a server and get some results via the HTTP protocol. Am I wrong in assuming this? I haven't been able to find much information on how SOAP might be able to solve a problem like this. I feel like a lot of people around my office are using SOAP as a buzzword and that has generated a bit of confusion over what SOAP actually is - and is capable of. Any thoughts on how to accomplish this task would be appreciated!
