• How do I mount shared folders (win7 host) in Ubuntu (guest) using VMware(tools v6)

  Experts. I've successfully installed VMware tools for Ubuntu. Everything seems to work fine, but shared folders were not mounted automatically. How do I get them to work? If I run vmware-hgfsclient in terminal, I get the list of shared folders, but ls -l /mnt/hgfs is empty. Actually there's no hgfs dir in /mnt. I know I should probably use the vmware-hgfsclient tool, but I realy don't know how. P.S. I wouldn't ask if I could understand the vmware-hgfsclient help I've read. Any suggestions?

• Developing an online email service [closed]

  I am interested in developing an online email service (e.g. Gmail, Hotmail, but on a much smaller scale) allowing people to sign up for free email addresses on my domain. The domain in question is already purchased, but I have no idea how to even start. I was hoping to code this using a Ruby framework such as Rails or Sinatra. Firstly, are there any libraries/pre-made solutions to this problem that exist already that would be easy enough to just plug-in to my own site? Secondly, if there are no real pre-made solutions, what are the general steps I need to take to accomplish this task?

• Tips and Tools for creating Spritesheet animations

  I am looking for a tool that I can use to create sprite sheet easily. Right now I am using Illustrator, but I can never get the center of the character in the exact position, so it looks like it is moving around(even though its always in one place), while being loop through the sprite sheet. Is there any better tools that I can be using? Also what kind of tips would you give for working with a sprite sheet? Should I create each part of the character in individual layers (left arm, right arm, body, etc.) or everything at once? any other tips would also be helpful! thank you

  I have been researching on open source software for an online grocery shop project. I have now narrowed by search to .NET based nopCommerce and the PHP based PrestaShop shopping carts. My plan is to acquire an open source shopping cart and hire a local developer to customize it to our local needs & as per our requirement. I'm now wondering whether I should have a developer start the whole project from scratch, or use an open source software such us PrestaShop or nopCommerce which can then be customized? Note that my store will have thousands of products and services so I want something that can handle up to 5000 products and over. Thanks for your thoughts and advice in advance.

• What time planning tools do you use?

  I'm trying to get a better overview of my tasks, and I'm looking for a tool which would let me enter tasks (everything from 2 hour tasks to 2 week tasks) and then simply let me organize these tasks on a timeline. I'm thinking that all tasks would have an estimated duration, and I could then prioritize these tasks by moving them along the timeline to prioritize them. The timeline would then show me the "tasks stack" and how far into the future i'm occupied. I'm not looking for an issue/bug handling system, but simply a tool which lets me get an overview of my tasks. I guess we're more into the category of resource planning. What tools do you use for this?

• 'tools.jar' is not in IDEA classpath

  I am a new user of Linux, it has been recommended to me by my friend. He told me to install software called IntelliJ Idea IDE. Well I have been following the tutorial. But now when I try to open "idea.sh", an error message pops-up: 'tools.jar' is not in IDEA classpath. Please ensure JAVA_HOME points to JDK rather than JRE. Please remember that I'm new to Ubuntu and I'm planning for a nice long stay once I get myself into it :) Also I do not know if I am running a correct Java6 JDK. When I do java -version, this is what I get: java version "1.6.0_23" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.11pre) (6b23~pre10-0ubuntu5) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b11, mixed mode) Thank You for reading this and I hope I will get a nice response.

• Looking for an old classic book about Unix command-line tools

  I am looking for a book about the Unix command-line toolkit (sh, grep, sed, awk, cut, etc.) that I read some time ago. It was an excellent book, but I totally forgot its name. The great thing about this specific book was the running example. It showed how to implement a university bookkeeping system using only text-processing tools. You would find a student by name with grep, update grades with sed, calculate average grades with awk, attach grades to IDs with cut, and so on. If my memory serve, this book had a black cover, and was published circa 1980. Does anyone remember this book? I would appreciate any help in finding it.

• Google Webmaster Tools Index dropped to Zero [closed]

  Earlier this year I rebuilt my website using ZenCart. Immediately I saw a drop in index status from 59 to 0. I then signed up for Google Webmaster Tools and noticed the Index status took a dramatic drop and has never recovered. I have worked to add content and I know I am not done, but have not seen any recovery of this index since. What confuses me is when I look at the sitemap status under Optimization it shows me there are 1239 submitted and 1127 pages indexed. Most of my pages have fallen off page one for relevant search terms and some are as far back as page 7 or 8 where they used to be on the first page. I have made some changes in the past week to robots.txt and sitemap.xml, but have not seen any improvements. Can anyone tell me what might be going on here? My website is andersonpens.net. Thanks! But now I learned about apport-collect and apport-bug which basically are: apport-bug - Reports problems to launchpad using Apport to collect a lot of information about your system to help the developers fix the problem and avoid unnecessary questions and answers. apport-collect - Works as apport-bug but it send the information to an already existing bug report. • How do you find partners for open source projects?

  I've created a few open-source projects in the past, and had some success. The process was generally the following: I'd start alone, create something that works, promote it, and finally (maybe) get some contributions. I have less that to contribute to open-source now, but I still have ideas and can still code :) So I wonder if there is a place or a way to meet people (online), discuss ideas and design, and then start working together on the project? The reason I'm thinking about an online way to do this, with strangers, is that while I do have programmer friends, we only very rarely have the same needs and interests at the same time. It seems to me that it would be easier to find such in match in the online global community. Any insight?

  It is a bit ironic, yesterday I answered a question related to this topic that was marked to be good and today I'm the one who asks. These are my thoughts and a question: Also let's agree on the terms: QA is a set of activities that defines and implements processes during SW development. The common tool is the process audit. However, my colleague at work agrees with the opinion that reviews and inspections are also quality assurance tools, although most sources classify them as quality control. I would say both sides are partially right: during inspections, we evaluate a physical product (clearly QC) but we see it as a white box so we can check its compliance with set processes (QA). Do you think it is the reason of the dichotomy among the authors? I know it is more like an academic question but it deserves the answer :)

• Most efficient way to generate 2D portraits

  Hey, I am not sure if this is a fitting question for gamedev, or if it is too art related. I am currently trying, to create 2D character protraits for my game. At first I tried to draw them and even though it helped polishing my drawing skills the end result either required way too much time or it simply looked like it was created by a grade school kid. So I am currently looking into some tools which from which people like me who are not out of the art-world might benefit. Especially tools which can create a 3D head+hair, so that I can render them. I have tried several 3D generation tools such as makehead and makehuman to create the basic head-shape. But I have to admit I am not well versed in what other options are available/what has the best quality/etc.

• Agile Tools For Handling Multiple Projects

  Currently I'm leading our agile team in an iteration manager role as well as doing my regular dev work. One of the difficulties I'm facing as an IM is tracking burn-down/burn-up; not because I can't produce graphs, but because there's multiple projects that this team is working on at one time. At present I have an excel workbook with sheets that contain a whole bunch of graphs, both at an overall team and by-project level. It's clunky and I spend more time tweaking formulas and double checking calculations than I'd really like. As such, I'm interested to know if anyone has used a tool that can effectively produce these sorts of reports, burn-downs, and predictions across multiple projects. I've seen http://www.pivotaltracker.com/ do some nice things, and of course there's JIRA/Greenhopper, but I'm not aware of those being used to track the progress of multiple projects within one team. If anyone's got an idea of some tools, or has faced a similar problem before, I'd love to hear from you.

  I am trying to add an application to my site where I can post job openings with my company and allow people to apply online. Can someone recommend a service or app already in existence for this purpose? I tried googling it, but could not find a set of search terms that did not return endless sites for job seekers. This is a (very) small business and I do not expect to have more than a few openings at any time, but what I am actually interested in is having a repository of interested job seekers to have on file. Then when people ask me about openings, I could just refer them to the page and they could apply. Then, if we have an opening, we could look through the list of candidates and if we can't fill the position(s) from that list, we could post the job and advertise to fill the position.

  This is my first question here. I am looking for a form builder solution that will allow rapid form development even by beginners, without needing much knowledge of programming. I prefer a solution that we can install on our servers. I have 3 products shortlisted for further review: MachForm, RackForms(formerly FormBoss) and Form Tools If anyone has used any of these products, I would appreciate your input on your experience with using these products and your recommendations. Does anyone know of other products that I must be sure to include in my review? We will eventually move over hundreds of forms to the chosen solution and I would like to make sure as much as I can that it will still be a viable solution in the coming years. • Great F# getting started online book

  So I have been battling around with F# for a few weeks and it has been frustrating just getting my brain around the syntax etc. Then someone put a comment on my blog that I should check out the following online book called the F# Survival Guide. I highly recommend those wanting to get into the basics of the language to go through this resource. It is easy to understand, especially for someone coming from a C# background.
