  Avant la version 4.6 du manager ASR, la notion de heartbeat s'entent uniquement entre le manager ASR et l'infrastructure Oracle. Il n'y avait pas de heartbeat au niveau de l'asset. Pour rappel, le heartbeat sert à assurer que la communication entre le manager ASR et l'infrastructure Oracle est toujours opérationnelle. Le manager ASR envoie quotidiennement un heartbeat. Si deux heartbeat consécutifs manquent à l'appel, les assets attachés passent en statut "No heartbeat" dans My Oracle Support (MOS), et un e-mail est envoyé au compte qui a servi à enregistré le manager ASR et aux contacts associés aux assets. La version 4.6 apporte une amélioration significative, dans la mesure ou elle introduit un heartbeat au niveau de l'asset, pour les telemetry sources suivantes : ILOM avec version de firmware 3.2.1.4 ou plus serveurs Fujitsu M-10 Solaris 11 via un Manager ASR relay Cette amélioration renforce la fiabilité de l'outil et mérite vraiment de passer un petit peu de temps pour upgrader le manager ASR en 4.6 (pour upgrader un manager ASR, voir ce billet). • Architecture for subscription based application

  This is about the architecture of my application I think. I have a Rails application where companies can administrate all things related to clients. Companies can buy a subscription and their users can access the application online. Hopefully I will get multiple companies subscribing to my appplication/service. Thing is, what should I do with my code and database? Seperate app code base and database per company One app code base but seperate database per company One app code base and one database The decision I am to make involves security (e.g. user from company X should not see any data from company Y) performance (let's suppose it becomes successful, it should have a good performance) and scalability (again, if successful, it should have a good performance but also easy for me to handle all the companies, code changes, etc) For sake of maintainability, I tend to opt for the one code base. For the database I really don't know at this moment. So what do you think is the best option?

• Is using ELSE bad programming?

  I've often come across bugs that have been caused by using the ELSE construct. A prime example is something along the lines of: If (passwordCheck() == false){ displayMessage(); }else{ letThemIn(); } To me this screams security problem. I know that passwordCheck is likely to be a boolean, but I wouldn't place my applications security on it. What would happen if its a string, int etc? I usually try to avoid using ELSE, and instead opt for two completely separate IF statements to test for what I expect. Anything else then either gets ignored OR is specifically handled. Surely this is a better way to prevent bugs / security issues entering your app. How do you guys do it?

The web based email marketing software of iKode also provides double opt-in subscription form which is effective to target special audience. However, if I want to import mailing list to this software, I need to add the address one by one, which is a waste of time. Does iKode provides mass account import ability? Or just need to upload a mailing list file?

  I have built a website using PHP and MySQL and now I am looking for a hosting service. I am expecting about a 1000 users registering and about 5-10k pageviews/day in a week's time. So which host should I opt for? It will let users submit contents of type blobs and submit around 10 pictures per users. I hope that traffic will increase so can justhost's or bluehost's shared hosting serve that purpose or should I go for more dedicated ones. Basically the site is write heavy and there are average 2-3 MySQL queries per page and it is quite dynamic. So depending on these requirements which web hosting will be optimal for me.

  I installed Eclipse long time ago from the Software Center, but recently I needed a newer version than the repo one. Then I removed it via Software Center and installed Eclipse Kepler in /opt. However, the window opened is not called Eclipse, it is the name of an old program I made (Eclipse- GMM). However, that's not the main issue, but that even if I created a .desktop file it launches the same, having "two" eclipses in the dock, the actual program and the launcher. How can I remove Unity .desktop cache or wathever it is this?

• Unity environment way too slow in Ubuntu 13.10

  Unity and its apps open too slowly whenever I open one. It takes a while for them to appear completely. Everything works properly when the window is already open. The biggest problem is with the dash: it's SO SLOW when I'm looking for an app although I have removed some lenses. What should I do or what can I do? These issues only occur with Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10 whereas 12.04 works AMAZNGLY but I have issues when updating a package or installing a new one, that's why I don't opt for that one. • Why is git-svn useful?

  I have read these related questions: I'm a Subversion geek, why should I consider or not consider Mercurial or Git or any other DVCS? git for personal (one-man) projects. Overkill? ...and I understand why git is useful. What I don't understand is why tools like git-svn that allow git to integrate with svn are useful. When, for example, a team is working with svn, or any other centralised SCM, why would a member of the team opt to use git-svn? Are there any practical advantages for a developer that has to synchronize with a centralized repository?

• Where must i focus [on hold]

  i have been working in technology field for last 7 years. i started with vb.net windows application along with oracle plsql. Later on i did projects that included coding in java ,struts framework ,javascripts. I have lost interest in doing projects with struts framework and doesn't find oracle plsql appealing too. I would love to work with new technologies especially mobile techs and my interests in coding persists still. But i am not sure if my organisation will ever shift its tech base to new and modern frameworks. Now i am 25 years old and worried about taking the right decision. i feel like quitting the job but at the same time i am concerned if i have the sufficient tech skills to start working on modern technologies in other organisations. Also i am confused if i must stick to the same company and wait for management jobs. Kindly suggest your opinions on the right strategy i must opt , being a 25 year old with this background.

• Port an existing Quickly app from precise to quantal

  I've developed an app using Quickly on a 12.04 system. In preparation for the 12.10 release, I'd like to have launchpad build a version for Quantal so that it can be used and tested by people from my ppa. I'm not willing to upgrade my system yet (I depend on it for work), how can I do this from 12.04 and my current quickly project? I have a virtualbox with 12.10 installed for testing, but I don't want to copy over the quickly project if I don't have to. Ideally, an answer should work with the quickly submitubuntu command so that it is packaged for installation in the /opt/extras.ubuntu.com directory.

• Shutdown issues on my Dell XPS M1530

  On my Dell XPS M1530 lapttop, I am facing issues with shut-down option after upgrading to 12.04 LTS from 11.10. Sometimes it shutdowns "cleanly". But other times everything goes down but I can still see the power LED glowing (even after removing the power cord). If I keep it like that laptop temperature increases. So finally I opt for "hard shut-down" (i.e. pressing the power button on). Any thoughts what is happening here?.   I saw how Struts 1 lasted from 2000 to 2013. I hear that people are moving from Struts 2 to Spring. But for a project that may need to be maintained for a decade or two, would it be advisable to opt for a framework or directly code with servlets and jquery? Can a system architecture really be designed keeping in mind a particular framework? What really is the market life of a framework? Do the creators of the framework create it with the assumption that it would become obsolete in a decade?

• Are there any conceptual drawbacks to building a web app with C++ and MySQL?

  I've inherited a pretty interesting project where there is a good opportunity to take an existing piece of software and turn it into a SaaS web app. As the project is inherited, the code base/ framework is already defined as C++ and MySQL. The app itself is compiled and run as an EXE on Windows Server. The UI is web based and the app works as a kind of server. From what I do know of modern web apps, this is perhaps an unusual choice. These days, most people seem to opt for a PHP framework or Ruby on Rails. Certainly that is the impression I get from reading blogs on the subject. So, I'm very interested to know if a C++ EXE backed by MySQL is a solid foundation for a web app, or whether we should be looking to build in another way?

• Is there a legit reason as to why Outlook.com premium UI is "not available" in Linux Chrome?

  Well if you use outlook OWA in Chrome on Ubuntu (or any Linux distro), you will get a stripped down version of it basically. You can get around it by faking your user agent, to appear that you are using FireFox. So my question is.. Is there some legitimate reason Microsoft does that, or are they just being a****s??? I mean once you have the user agent faked, it works perfectly. PS. Just in case anyone else need to use outlook, here is the command to start it with fake useragent: /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome --user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.2; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/6.0.481.0 Safari/534.4"
