  What would be the ideal hardware setup for pushing lots of bandwith on a tube site? We have ever-expanding cloud storage where users upload the movies, then we have these web-delivery machines which cache the FLV files on its local harddrives and deliver them to users. Each cache machine can deliver 1200 mbits/s , if it has SAS 8 harddrives. Such a cache machine costs us $550/month for 8x160gb -- so each machine can cache only 160GB at any given time. If we want to cache more then 160gb , we need to add another machine..another $550/month..etc. This is very un-economical so I am wondering if we have any experts here who can figure out a better setup. I've been looking into "gluster FS", but I am not sure if this thing can push a lot of bandwith. Any ideas highly appreciated. Thank you!

• What should be taken into consideration when deploying Windows 8 in a domain environment?

  Edit: Reformulating the question: We have ordered new laptops but before they arrive, our development team is trying to decide whether to install Windows 8 or stick with Windows 7. We have already tested on isolated machines, but we have not yet been allowed to add the machines to the domain. Before we approach the networking group to discuss adding Windows 8 machines to the domain, we need more information on what changes / issues to expect in moving from Windows 7. Are there any aspects we should consider that are specific to Windows 8 clients? Thus far, I've gotten the following feedback: Windows Administrative Shares are disabled New set of Group Policy templates Changes to proxy server settings Additional items along these lines would be helpful. We're not looking for items related to Windows GUI changes, but instead primarily items related to having the machine live and be used on the domain.

• Good Linux Distro for Disconnected Netbook

  I'm deployed to Afghanistan with the Army and I have a friend who's netbook had his hard drive take a dump on him. He ordered a new hard drive and I was able to download and burn a copy of Ubuntu to disk from work. However the default install doesn't support most of the media that he wants to watch (AVI files, probably some DIVX video) without installing extra packages. We don't have internet in the tent and really don't have a vaiable option for downloading additional packages through the package manager anywhere here. The computer is a small HP netbook. All my friend wants is to watch ripped movies. Does anyone know of a good way to do either of the following: Download packages seperately and install them via CD A distro that is going to come preloaded with all of the packages and needed to watch just about any type of video file you can think of? • Missing graphics accelerator for Toshiba C855D-s5232

  I formatted the drive and re-installed Windows 7 64-bit on a Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5232. Now I am missing the graphics accelerator. I have been to Toshiba's website but cannot find the right one. Same is so for AMD. It has AMD E1-1200 APU with Radeon HD Graphics. The machine is recognizing a standard VGA. I ordered a recovery disk on eBay and it was supposed to be here yesterday. Can anyone help with other options?

• Program complains not enough disk space even if the disk space exists

  I have an EXT3 partition mounted in ordered data mode. If a power failure occurs when a program is creating files on that partition, I see that space usage reported is normal and I don't see any partial written files. But when I try to run the same program again after the system comes back up it complains that there is not enough disk space. Even though the free space reported is far more than required. The program always succeeds in normal conditions. Also the problem seems to disappear when the partition is remounted. I was wondering what could be the right way to handle the situation other than unmounting and remounting.

• Can my email address be revoked? [closed]

  I did some work with an organization and had a falling out, so I left them. They used postfix to have [email protected], and I had one. I set up gmail to get my mail via POP as well as to "send mail as @_.com". I think for a long time they forgot to delete my email address and now it seems that I can send but not receive mail at the address. What could a possible explanation for this be? Can they revoke delivery but not sending from the address? Why would they only revoke one if they cna revoke both? Is it more tedious or difficult a task to revoke sending? Thanks

Causes: A looping condition was detected. (The server is configured to route mail back to itself). If you have multiple SMTP Virtual Servers configured on your Exchange server, make sure they are defined by a unique incoming port and that the outgoing SMTP port configuration is valid to avoid looping between local virtual servers. • Experience with AMCC 3ware 9650se raid cards? Ours seems dead

  We have a 8-port 3ware 9650se raid card for our main disk array. We had to bring the server down for a pending power outage, and when we turned the machine back on, the raid card never started. This card has been in service for a couple years without problems, and was working up until the shutdown. Now, when we turn the machine on, the bios option rom that normally kicks in before the bootloader doesn't show up, none of the drives start, and when the OS tries to access the device, it just times out. The firmware on it has been upgraded in the past, so it's possible we've hit some sort of firmware bug. We're using it in a Silicon Mechanics R272 machine with gentoo for the OS. The OS eventually boots, but alas, without the card. We've ordered a new one, but I'm worried that if we replace the card it won't recognize the existing array. Has anybody performed a card swap before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Reinstallation version Windows 7?

  I ordered a Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit os online and just received a DVD & Key Code sticker. The DVD label shows it to be a reinstallation DVD, Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit Dell branded and states that the DVD is only to be used to reinstall the OS on a Dell PC. I built this PC & it previously has had XP Pro installed for the last several years. A couple of weeks ago I had a problem with some Malware & made the mistake of attempting to reinstall the XP Pro only to find out that MS has locked out my key, the same one I have been using on this built PC for the last 3 years. The previous PC was built by a local PC builder & I just reinstalled the OS on the new system. Should I send this Win7 DVD back to where I bought it, or can I use it? What a mess, Thanks DWB

• sudo displays typed password in bash script

  Hullo, I have a bash script that uses sudo a few times. There's a couple of strange points about it though. It asks me for my password a few seconds after I've already entered it for a previous command. The second time I enter my password, it's echoed to the display. Here's the relevant bits of the script. sudo service apache2 stop drush sql-dump --root="$SITE_DIR" --structure-tables-key=svn --ordered-dump | grep -iv 'dump completed on' | sudo tee "$DB_DIR/${SITE_NAME}.sql" > /dev/null sudo svn diff "$DB_DIR" | less sudo svn commit -m "$MESSAGE" "$DB_DIR" sudo service apache2 start The first password is to stop apache, and it works as expected. As mentioned, the sudo tee doesn't 'remember' that I have elevated privileges, asks for the password again, and echoes it to the screen. Given that tee is all about echoing to screen, I've played around a little with simple scripts which have | sudo tee, and they all work as expected. Ideas?! TIA Andy

• Is mismatched firmware on drives in a raid-6 a bad thing?

  Hi all, I recently expanded a raid-1 to a raid-6 with six drives. I ordered all four of the new drives from the same place, and all of them were advertised to be the same drives as the original two--Seagate 15krpm 146gb. However, when I was looking at the drives in the perc6/i utility, one of them appeared to be an earlier firmware version; it had S515, compared to the other five drives with S527. Sure enough, after inspecting the drive itself, the label advertised the earlier firmware version. Running Dell's SAS firmware upgrade utility should have in theory moved them all up to S52A, but when I ran it it moved the S527 drives up to S52A, and left the S515 drive untouched. Is this something to be worried about? If it's something that should be corrected, is there a way to target a particular drive for upgrade since the firmware utility didn't seem to do it by itself?

  I always thought that the return-path header was used for bounced messages, so I have my email newsletter software setup to unsubscribe anyone whose email address replies back to the return-path email address. But recently some users started telling me their out-of-office replies where unsubscribing them. Do out-of-office replies get sent to the return-path on some email servers? I could check all emails to that address and see if they have the "message/delivery-status" content-type in one of the parts, but I wasn't sure if this was necessary.

• How to change location of Maildir/ in postfix mail system

  I'm using Postfix with imap and pop servers running on ubuntu linux. I want to change the the location of Maildir folder from user's home directory to some other shared folder so that all mail is in one place. I also have problem sending local mails to users who does not have a home directory (e.g. www-data), the system users created by default. I'm getting the following error. postfix/local[32123]: DCE1D221BBD: to=<www-data@********>, orig_to=<www-data>, relay=local, delay=33, delays=33/0/0/0.12, dsn=5.2.0, status=bounced (maildir delivery failed: create maildir file /var/www/Maildir/tmp/1382169296.P32123.********: Permission denied) I'd like to have a folder structure similar to this: /all-mail/<user-name>/<mail-goes-here>

• Sendmail : forwarding emails problem

  So here is my situation. I have this 2 DNS (say a.org and b.org) with the same IP address (both A record) tied to this box. We have Google mail handing our a.org emails . I want b.org emails to forward to users at a.org emails . My sendmail is getting confused and is delivering all b.org emails locally instead of forwarding them to a.org (which is specified in the .forward) . What do I do from the sendmail side to force external delivery . Thanks Much

• Post Error, Fixed/Removable Media Error

  Hi, I really do not know what I am missing here. I ordered parts for a new server. The board is an Intel s3420GP. From the diagnostic LEDs I get the error message: 0xB1h which corresponds to "Fixed Media: Disabling fixed media" and 0xB8h which corresponds to "Removable Media: Resetting removable media device." I can not for the life of me figure out what it is talking about. I have two identical motherboards and both gave the error message. I don't have a second CPU yet, so I can't test that. There are no beeps or anything. It seems the server resets every 10 seconds or so (the speaker does work, I put the RAM in the wrong slots on purpose to test this out, and the correct error POST code came up) Please help me, I'm not sure where else to turn or to ask

• Redirect HTTP requests based on subdomain address without changing accessed URL?

  Let's say I have a domain, www.mydomain.com. And I ordered a new domain, abc.newdomain.com. Both domains are hosted in the same ISP, so currently requests to either of those addresses result in the same page being shown. I want to redirect all requests to abc.newdomain.com to folder /wp so that when users access abc.newdomain.com they would see whatever is inside folder /wp without seeing the URL change. Questions: How can I achieve this using .htaccess? How can I prevent users from accessing directly /wp directory (meaning that www.mydomain.com/wp would be blocked)?

• Gathering IP's from a complicated log

  I have a question regarding the use of some more advanced grep, awk, sed. I have a log file, for a proprietary MTA, that contains IP's in a string, delimited by [redacted]^~x.x.x.x^[redacted]. So far all of my grepping, awking, and sedding hasn't gotten me very far. This log file has 331520 lines in it. My goal was to simply grep out the ip's, then do a for loop with sed, to sed 's/$i/redacted'. I'm including a sample of one of the log entries. If you all have any idea, I would be greatly appreciative.   Hi, I have a website sending email using phpmailer - Centos, postfix, php, mysql etc Emails are getting delivered to all hosts correctly except one. Mar 30 14:38:22 server postfix/qmgr[15467]: 7237D218852D: to=, relay=none, delay=0.04, delays=0.04/0.01/0/0, dsn=4.4.2, status=deferred (delivery temporarily suspended: lost connection with mail06.indamail.hu[91.83.45.46] while sending MAIL FROM) They told me to limit concurrent connections to 2 to their server. I did, but they still say I connect more than twice. main.cf: default_destination_concurrency_limit = 1 fallback_relay = smtp_destination_concurrency_limit = 1 initial_destination_concurrency = 1 Any ideas?   Rapid Virtualization Indexing (RVI) is a hardware virtualization feature that can potentially give significant performance improvement. Intel's equivalent is Extended Page Tables. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_Virtualization_Indexing for more details. My question is: Does RVI require motherboard or chipset support? If yes, what desktop chipsets support it? I've ordered a Phenom II CPU (which supports RVI) but I haven't bought the motherboard. I'll install XenServer or VMware ESXi (which both support RVI) on the new computer.

• Transport rules on a live@edu instance to filter SSNs

  Has anyone implemented transport rules on a live@edu(or whatever Microsoft is calling it these days) instance to reject the delivery of messages that include SSN's? I see how to set up transport rules in Exchange 2007, and even how to do it in the Windows Live Admin page, though the rules there don't seem to allow for regexes, can anyone confirm this? • Should I replace libapache2-mod-php5-filter with libapache2-mod-php5 on Debian 6 Apache 2.2.16?

  Upgrading various virtual machines we are having an issue with the Debian package upgrade to version 2.2.16 The upgrade (surprisingly) seems to remove libapache2-mod-php5 replacing it with libapache2-mod-php5-filter. This gave us some headache as the php.ini was pointing to the "old" one and some of the apache.conf conditional module rules stopped working. We can fix all those but we can't figure out if there would be any issues if we just "reversed" this and simply install libapache2-mod-php5 again and load that module instead of the "filter" one or in there is anyway to "alias" a module. I tend to think that the change "has a reason" but after reading apache2 and php5: module or filter I understand the module differences are to do with post delivery security issues.

  I'm following this tutorial to setup a Postfix/Dovecot mail server with Postfix Admin as a web front end. As regards directory structure for virtual mail users, the author of the tutorial writes: Virtual mail users are those that do not exist as Unix system users. They thus don't use the standard Unix methods of authentication or mail delivery and don't have home directories. That is how we are managing things here: mail users are defined in the database created by Postfix Admin rather than existing as system users. Mail will be kept in subfolders per domain and account under /var/vmail - e.g. [email protected] will have a mail directory of /var/vmail/example.com/me. But when he gives instructions about configuring Postfix Admin, he suggests this to be contained by Postfix Admin's config.inc.php: // Mailboxes // If you want to store the mailboxes per domain set this to 'YES'. // Examples: // YES: /usr/local/virtual/domain.tld/[email protected] // NO: /usr/local/virtual/[email protected] $CONF['domain_path'] = 'NO'; Is there an inconsistency?

• Remove LCD Stand for Wall Mounting - FSM-270YG

  Based on Jeff Atwood's post on Coding Horror, I ordered one of these monitors, and I've been absolutely loving it. However, I recently (i.e. today) took the next step in monitor-y goodness and fastened the sucker to an articulated wall mount. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to remove the stand. The flat portion comes off with a single screw, but the leg it fastens to has no apparent method of removing it. Has anyone figured out a trick for removing these, so they don't just stick out below the screen? Should I remove the screws from the backside of the screen, and look for an internal connection to remove? Or just give up and live with it? (After all, it's a great display, it's floating in the air in front of me, and the stand leg is only a minor annoyance).
