• Do you enjoy 'Unit testing' ? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How have you made unit testing more enjoyable ? i mean we all are developers & we love coding.I love learning new stuff(languages, frameworks, even new domains like mobile/Tablet development). But Testing ? As a newbie to the corporate environment,I just can't digest it.(We follow 'write-then-manually-test pattern').is it unit testing ?.Usually a single developer handles a module(From design to code & unit testing).So is it practical ? Somebody tell me how to make unit testing fun ? Or just How to do it properly?Do we try all possibilities manually.Say unit test for a webpage with lot of 'javascript validations'. PS:projects are all web applications.

• 13.04 - Extenal monitor plugged on laptop HDMI shows image but lags a lot

  It uses an Nvidia GeForce GTS 250M. When I plug in the monitor, it shows some images but with bad FPS and lagging a lot. For example, when I move the mouse pointer, it leaves a trail that vanishes from time to time. I didn't install Nvidia drivers because every time I did this on past versions I ended up with an unbootable system. On past versions I just gave up trying to use the monitor cause it never showed anything regardless of what driver I installed. But since 13.04 ALMOST made it, I'll make another tries. ps.: Works perfectlty on Windows 7/8

• Design: How to model / where to store relational data between classes

  I'm trying to figure out the best design here, and I can see multiple approaches, but none that seems "right." There are three relevant classes here: Base, TradingPost, and Resource. Each Base has a TradingPost which can offer various Resources depending on the Base's tech level. Where is the right place to store the minimum tech level a base must possess to offer any given resource? A database seems like overkill. Putting it in each subclass of Resource seems wrong--that's not an intrinsic property of the Resource. Do I have a mediating class, and if so, how does it work? It's important that I not be duplicating code; that I have one place where I set the required tech level for a given item. Essentially, where does this data belong? P.S. Feel free to change the title; I struggled to come up with one that fits.

• After some wired flash out, I can't login to wmii any more, how to fix it?

  I've been using wmii on Ubuntu14.04(virtual machine on win7) for months. During which, I got pop out to login interface servaral times due to some wired mouse click action. But today, after I met such wired pop out, I can't login to wmii any more. I'll be stuck at the interface like The bottom yellow bar is the command area for wmii. but it has no response when I press Mod + p I restart my machine, and even reinstalled wmii, but everytime when I tried to login wmii, I stuck at that interface. By the way, I login to wmii from the login interface, where I can choose between Gnome and wmii. How to fix this? I'm crying for help! ps: I can login to gnome normally

• Pendrive USB Ubuntu installation - black screen on boot

  I see many posts on this, but no solution. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my 16GB USB flash drive using this official link using their tool Universal USB Installer. Installation to USB went fine so I set my laptop to boot from USB and the Ubuntu was recognized. I saw the usual boot screen and I chose option "Run Ubuntu from this USB". The boot process started and after 5-6 seconds the screen goes black and non-responsive. I thought that it hang on X loading so I tried switching to console via Ctrl+Alt+F1-6 but the system did not respond. Why is this happening? Am I doing something wrong? PS. My laptop is HP Pavillion G6

• Google-Calendar offline?

  How can I have my google-calendars availabe offline on my PC as well? I have been using dropbox to sync my calendars in ics-format between different PC's instead of using google calendar. The disadvantage of google-calendar is, that I can only see my appointments when online. Now I want to sync my calendars with my android device as well, what does not seem to be possible yet. So I am planning to have an online copy of all my appointments on Google-Calendar, in order to sync them with my Android device. At the same time I want to be able to access my appointments offline (have an offline copy of each calendar on my PC's synced via Dropbox). Is there a way to automatically duplicate and sync Coogle-Calendars with Ubuntu to achieve this? • Dash doesn't recognize that application is installed

  I've installed Geary from the software center, but I can't launch it from the Dash nor did I manage to create an app icon on the Launcher. The Software center has no problem seeing that the app is installed (see screenshot) Running the command "geary" will launch the app. Is there any way I can force the Dash to function properly? Thanks, Calixte PS: Does anyone know what this problem is related to? I tried re-installing the app and restarting the computer but that has no effect at all. I have practically installed nothing on this computer, so I can't imagine what app could interfere with the Dash

• Why is (Ogg) Vorbis not automatically supported by Windows?

  Vorbis was never threatened by MPEG LA, so it is undoubtedly completely patent free. (MPEG LA never misses a chance to spread patent FUD) Windows supports mp3, so it isn’t because they want to push their crappy wma. The GPL allows distribution alongside commercial products, and Even if they fear to ship GPL software, they can still load it automatically, like they do with XviD So why can’t a windows customer not simply drop a ogg vorbis file into his/her music library and listen to it via WMP? PS: To counter misconceptions: They already download the GPL’d XviD codec on demand, so they already have 99% of what it takes to do the same with Vorbis. It would take me about 5 minutes to do this, if I were familiar with the WMP code base and directshow filter system. PSS: I was told to ask this here rather than on stackoverflow, so i do.

• Make an agenda view google calendar entry display initially as if it had been clicked

  So I've got a google calendar embedded in my web page. It's set to agenda view so when you click on an entry it expands and shows you more information on the entry. I'd like to be able to link to the page w/ the embedded calendar from elsewhere, and have a specific entry already expanded (as if it had been clicked). Is this even possible? I'm not really sure where to start. PS: I don't have enough rep on this SE to create tags... and there isn't already a tag for "google-calendar"...

• How to script a reinstall (apt repo's and installed packages)

  I need to wipe my hard drive and reinstall Ubuntu. /home is on a separate partition, so I can back that up to a backup drive, then copy it back to the wiped drive, install ubuntu, and point it at the existing /home, no problem. However, I also want to script a reinstall of all my apt repo's and the packages I currently have installed, so I don't have to waste hours doing that manually. Anyone know a good way to do this? PS - At least, I'm pretty sure I have to wipe the drive. Need to install Windows 7, and only have an HP system restore disk that formats the whole drive, and not a legit Windows 7 install disk that lets me install on a single partition. If somebody know a way to trick the system restore disk to install only to a single partition, I'd love to hear it.

• wired connection not being recognised in ubuntu 10.04 lts

  I have windows7 installed on my C drive and ubuntu 10.04 lts on my D drive. When I plud the lan cable (ethernet cable) onto the ethernet card of my laptop, windows7 identifies the network correctly without the need for any manual settings and connects me to the network correctly. Unfortunately, in ubuntu, even after plugging in the cable, nothing happens (on the network side). It is only scanning for wireless networks it seems, and doesnt bother about the wired networks. I tried adding a new wired connection and manually entered the physical address which was displayed when i connected to the network using windows. i entered the phy address, and told it to use auto dhcp and saved the dialog bog in ubuntu network connection. Still there is no change, and ubuntu doesnt seem to recognise anything. please let me know how to work with wired connections using ubuntu, and why my wired cable is not being recognized in ubuntu. thanks. PS: I am pretty new to ubuntu/ linux :)

• Right-click acts too fast - No Fix Yet, Any Workaround?

  When I click the right mouse button (anywhere, be it - desktop, browser, console, etc.), the right-click context menu pops up so quickly that the very *first* option in the menu gets clicked. This happens too often to take it easy. This issue has been brought up a couple of times on Ask Ubuntu, but with no fix whatsoever. This is a very low priority issue for the Ubuntu team, I believe? (How could they?!) Is there at least a workaround for the issue? Ubuntu is almost unusable for me as it is now. PS: I have a new mouse. So, please don't go about suggesting that I get a new one - - everything's working fine on Windows 7, so should be the case with ubuntu 11.10, which it is not.

• Unix as opposed to Windows (Java and C++)

  Firstly I should explain the background. I am interested in high frequency trading programming roles. After looking at many job specs it is very clear that there is a big demand for programmers who have programmed Java and C++ on Unix as opposed to Windows. My question is what are the differences a High Freq programmer would come across? It cannot be something in the language itself because syntactically they do not differ over OS? Therefore I thought it must be something which the programming language has to interface, resources etc? Could anyone please help me out as I am trying to improve my C++/Java on Unix, in order to aim for this type of career? ps I'm guessing part of this answer lies with the socket infrastructure on Unix?

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 . I'll buy a wireless modem, Inca IM-201W . But i'm looking supported OS of modem : Windows XP , Vista, 7 . There isn't Ubuntu in list.SO what's the meaning of this ? Shouldn't I buy this modem ? I will use wireless connection. (PS. Sometimes, while i'm trying to connect a Wireless network on any cafe, i'm having problem. • Cannot start ubuntu-desktop

  I am mainly a Windows technician and am trying to install ubuntu server. Everything worked fine and I can log in using the shell but when I installed ubuntu-desktop it just refuses to start? I did try startx and I get the message "server already running" I tried "start gdm" (what is this supposed to do?) and it comes back with "Job is already running: gdm" I know that the server version is not really for ubuntu-desktop but all our other servers are like that and I want it, is there any help out there? Ps. the server is running on a VM install that my IT department made for me and I connect to the machine shell using "Tera Ter Web 3.1" Thank you Jack

• Using normals in DirectX 10

  I've got a working OBJ loader that loads vertices, indices, texture coordinates, and normals. As of right now it doesn't process texture coordinates or normals but it stores them in arrays and creates a valid mesh with the vertices and indices. Now I am trying to figure out how can I make the shader use the correct normal in the array for the current vertex if I can't setnormals() to my mesh. If I were to just use an index in my array of normals corresponding to the index in the vertices, how would I retrieve the current index the shader is processing? BTW: I am trying to write a blinn-phong shader technique. Also when I create the input layout and I've added the semantic NORMAL to it, how would I list the multiple semantics in that single parameter? Would I just separate it with a space? PS: If you need to see any code, just let me know.

We are also with the Tucson Refugee ministry and we have computers given to us all the time then we reload the OS clean it up then we give them to the refugee families. • Architecture for html5 multiplayer game?

  Hello I want to write a HTML5 multiplayer game in which there are rooms with two players answering a series of questions with 3 possible answers, 10sec/question, which are being downloaded from a server. It will have some ratings and so on. I want to make it as scalable as possible. I wonder what technologies to use to accomplish that. HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript obviously. But what about the server-side? I have been researching and found that Socket.IO + Node.js + mongoDB would do the job but after doing some more research it maybe not. Can you suggest me some kind of architecture for doing this game? Free technologies, if possible. Or what to read and from where to start in order to understand how to do it. Thanx in advance! P.S. I have an experience with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, C#, ASP.NET MVC and relational db's.

• Is it possible to learn maths via programming, or you should learn maths for programming?

  I am not the best in maths, not very horrid either, but lower than the average, I've always been thinking to improve my maths, but schools and books didn't do the job because I get bored too fast. The only thing I don't get bored with is coding and gaming, so I thought what if coding a program that solves mathematical problems will help me understand maths better, most of these problems are limits (calculus), functions, Differential calculus, and some other subjects (I already said am not that good) similar to the previous noted. My question is: Am I able to achieve a better knowledge in maths if I do some specific program coding, and if possible, is physics possible that way too? Or am I wrong and Maths should be learned before programming to help improve my coding? P.S : C++ is the preferred language.

• Problems with No-IP redirecting

  I am setting up a webserver on my ubuntu desktop 13.04, everything is working fine except; When trying to access the server through the external host using no-ip, it gives the original index created by apache on setup. While when I try to connect to the server via my real IP address from externally, it goes to the correct index. I have been trying to figure out what the issue is on this problem as nothing is working because of that bad redirect, I'm wondering if anyone of you could help me out, or advise me in the right path.   Possible Duplicate: How bad is it to use display: none in CSS? I have heard that using display:none or visibility:hidden css properties are not a very good idea for seo purposes. I have about 4 different pop up windows to display and each one has about 20 words inside it. I can create hidden divs. Another option is to store div html elements as javascript string. In this way pop up html elements will be generated from javascript string. This will be still faster than using ajax since the data is static. Is this method absolutely safe for SEO? P.S.: I was just asking about similar question on http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12389075/storing-data-in-javascript-array-for-further-use, but this one is different, it is about static data and about SEO.

• What method do I use to manage an app-specific background process?

  I am developing an application with different behavior depending on the arguments : "-config" starts a Gtk window to change options, start and close the daemon. "-daemon" starts a background process that does something every X minutes. I already know how to use fork/system/exec etc... But I would like to know the main logic of such application to : restart or refresh the daemon when configuration change. keep only one instance of the daemon. I have read that killing the daemon to restart it is not a clean way to do. How other applications do ? (ubuntuone, weather forecast, rss feed working with notification area) Thanks for your help. PS : I don't want to create a system-wide daemon, just a user application with a background process.
