Separate urls for a set of pages sharing 80% duplicate content

Issue: Currently my site has one particular page which has country specific data. So I've URLs like : mysite.com/sale-united-states mysite.com/sale-united-kingdom mysite.com/sale-sweden etc. All these pages have 80-90% common content and 10-20% country specific content. currently all these pages canonically point to mysite.com/sale-united-states. The problem is when someone searches for "sale Sweden", Google correctly shows mysite.com/sale-united-states page, which does not feel correct as it shows US page instead of Sweden. Now I'm thinking of not using canonical url so that country specific urls are produced in Google saerch. But I'm not sure how 80% duplicate content is going to affect SEO? What should be the recommended approach for this situation? A friend of mine suggested a "separate subdomain per country" based approach but it seems overkill for one page.

I am a web developer and I want to create clones of the sites I've developed for clients, so that I have an "original copy" on a subdomain of my own website, so that I can showcase my work to new clients. What is the best way to not get my clients original websites penalised for duplicate content? I am planning to have a robots.txt file that disallows all robots, as well as using <link href="http://www.client-canonical-site.com/" rel="canonical" /> in the <head> of the pages. Is that sufficient? Should I use rel=nofollow on all the links as well?

SEO for images: can I use a different (cookieless) domain?

Hello, We want to increase the value of some of our important images by means of SEO, and we want to start serving them from a different, i.e. cookieless, domain. We want to go from http://www.example.com/images/1234.jpg to http://www.example.com/germany/bavaria/landscape.jpg which can easily be done via URL rewriting. Then on the other hand, we would like to serve the image from a completely different domain, let's say http://www.examplestatic.com/germany/bavaria/landscape.jpg, to save the overhead of sending the cookie from www.example.com. Somehow I feel that this is not a good idea because I move the image away from the content by putting it on a different domain. Can anyone shed some light on this problem? Naturally, I would just use a different subdomain, e.g. img.example.com, but we already use subdomains for languages and our cookies are valid for all subdomains of example.com, so this won't help. Directing crawlers to content in language per language sub-domain

I have a site with multilingual website with many pages (40M). The site has UGC, and each translation is actually for the titles. Each sub-domain points to the same content with different titles per language. As far as I understand, each sub-domain should be indexed by search engines, meaning they will actually need to crawl 40M x supported-languages. So I thought it might be best to direct each subdomain crawler, to pages that are fully in that language (titles + UGC). Is there a way to do this? Should search engines understand this on their own?

SSL issue and redirects from https to http

I have a site www.example.com for which i purchased SSL cert and installed. And it was working fine, I also have a subdomain with app.example.com which was not on SSL. Both www.example.com and app.example.com are on same IP address. At later we decided to put SSL only on app.frostbox.com and then i configured SSL with app.frostbox.com and it worked fine, Now the issue is that Google is indexing my site as https://www.example.com/ and when users hits the web , Invalid security warning is issued and when user allow security issue they are shown my app.example.com contents. Note: I have my SSL configuration files in /etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf The contents of the ssl.conf are below. http://pastebin.com/GCWhpQJq NOTE: I tried solutions in .httaccess but none of those worked. Mediawiki hosting? [closed]

Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? What is the best mediawiki hosting provider? I want to be able to have a fairly simple, reliable wiki attached to a site's subdomain (wiki.mysite.com). I'd prefer it as a service, updates handled for me, I don't want to see any code! I imagine I'll change my dns to point to the provider and pay a few bucks a month. Nice and simple. There seem to be a few providers who offer this, what have you had success with?

Is it possible to track redirects to external sites from our subdomains?

I have a handful of subdomains set up as redirects because we are using them for QR codes. I want to be able to track the QR code redirects (which are already set up and printed so no changing them at this point) and see the effectiveness of each. Here's two examples: http://qr.glorkianwarrior.com and http://ad.glorkianwarrior.com are set up to forward to our iTunes page (later on this year it may forward to Google Play or a specific landing page), is there any way on my server to track the redirect from the subdomain to iTunes and see where traffic is coming from first? I have the redirects set up through cPanel presently using subdomains. Edit: From the research I've seen I can't track a 301 directly. If I redirect to an internal page and then do a timed redirect to the iTunes link, how long will it take for the tracking script to track a hit?

Usefulness of blogs for multi language ecommerce site

I have a multi-language ecommerce site for which I am trying to improve its online marketing. There's currently a blog for the english shop, on a subdomain, which doesn't really get very much traffic. I'd been recommended to set up blogs for each of the different language shops and try to generate traffic to each of the blogs. I'm wondering if this is really worth the effort and cost (blog devt costs and ongoing translations required). Does anyone have any experience/advice on this at all? Perhaps where they've used this approach successfully or otherwise?

I have a strange issue with my website and it seems i am unable to understand what cauese the problem.I would highly appreciate your help.The Scenario is I have two websites. Website A Website B Website A is simply hosted within the root directory of my hosting account.Within this root *directory* i have a sub folder " subfolder A " and within which is another subfolder " subfolder B " that contains my site Website B so the path looks like root/sublfolder_A/subfolder_B/ that contains my **Website B ( i.e subfolder_B) ** All goes fine.When i access the website B from my desktop/Laptop Website B is loaded normally. but when i access the Website through a mobile device , mobile site of Website A is loaded while as it should load website_B Also , to let you know , both websites have different URL's and not subdomain's or anything. They each have their own Google Analytics to track individual stats. But we want to know what general traffic for all clients of our app. So we want to know stuff like "among all our clients we had x number of views." What is the best way tool to track that sort of thing.

Wordpress Multisite (Subfolders) - Google Analytics Tracking

I have a Wordpress multisite subfolder instance that I would like to track via Google Analytics. I guess optimally this would be a plugin which I could track each site in two places The Main Tracking Code which totals all traffic from the Multisite instance The Individual Site tracking code to see how each site specifically is doing. I think this plugin would have worked for me if I had a subdomain multisite instance: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-analytics-multisite-async/installation/ I know I can manually place the dual tracking code (http://www.markinns.com/articles/full/adding_two_google_analytics_accounts_to_one_page) but that would involve editing a theme and I have multiple sites using TwentyEleven template. I don't think I can edit the theme and not have it wreak havoc on the rest of the sites using TwentyEleven. So has anyone done this? Is there a a technique I'm missing? Is there a plugin available to do this in Multisite Subfolder installations? Is there a way to manually insert GA codes into themes which are used by multiple sites? Any insight is appreciated.

How can i distinguish revenue from different folders in Adsense?

I am currently running three websites using adsense. Since i do this more to be useful than to earn something, i have a subdomain of a free hoster and my websites live in subfolders e.q. mydomain.hoster.com/website1, mydomain.hoster.com/website2, to which i link with .tk aliases. Is there a way to distinguish adsense income from website1 to website 2? I tried using custom channels, but somehow this part of adsense eludes me. Can someone shed some light on this?

Are there advantages of using hard coded URLs for localization?

On the Synergy website, localization is detected (and can be overridden) but uses the same URL for all languages. Some websites however, like Wikipedia have language specific subdomains. What are the advantages of having either subdomains or subdirectories (i.e. a specific URL) for each language localization? Also, should it automatically redirect the user to the specific subdomain/subdir based on the language that the browser requests? I suspect that there are advantages, which I'm guessing are: When the website appears in search results for non-English languages, the translated page description will be shown (assuming there is a translation provided by the website). When a user shares a page (e.g. through twitter), it will show in a specific language. Perhaps this is a disadvantage though? Am I correct, if so, are there more advantages?

I want to combine the databases from two different sites under one URL. How is this possible?

I have a small site that I want to merge with a bigger one. How can I merge the second one with the first? I know that one solution would be to make the smaller one a subdomain of the bigger one, but I would like the following thing to happen: when I click on a category or a tag, posts from both sites/databases would appear. Something like Smashing Magazine did when it assimilated designinformer.com. The other solution and the one that I would prefer would be to merge the two databases, but I don't know if this is possible.

hp smart array lock up code 0x15, what is that? (or where can I get a list of descriptions of HP smart array controller lock up codes)

Hi, I've had a couple of Dl180 6g boxes hung over the last week, each have a P410 smart array controller. upon reboot the server has indicated that a controller failure event occurred and the previous lock up code was 0x15 - the server rebooted without issue. However there was nothing in the IML log, but the ADU report provided the following; Trap Address High Or Post Results Lockup Reason Or Post Error RIS Updates Or Post Error Detail Firmware Version Trap Address Low 0x8087 0x0015 0x0000033e 0x015e 0xd65c any suggestions on what that code is, my google fu failed. And hp support have not responded with any detail as yet.

Stop Zabbix notification for nodes under zabbix-proxy when proxy service is down

I have a zabbix-proxy and 12 nodes in that proxy. Right now whenever proxy service goes down. It send out of reach mail for all the 12 nodes. I want to send mail only for the zabbix proxy not for the nodes under that proxy Updated: Now I am trying to have a single trigger in which I want to check both the conditions like 1-check zabbix-host is not accessble from past x minutes. 2-check the host is not giving any data to the proxy(Host is down). Not the trigger should start shouting onle when we have condition in which proxy is running and node is down. I tried the below but its not working for me. Accessing Netatalk/AFP Shares from OS X Snow Leopard

Recently upgraded Ubuntu home server from 8.04 client to 10.04 server and reinstalled all services therein. One of them is a Netatalk daemon that I configured in a fashion similar to this website: http://www.kremalicious.com/2008/06/ubuntu-as-mac-file-server-and-time-machine-volume/ Finder recognizes my server and the afp service, yet when I attempt to log in (using valid credentials), Finder indicates its the wrong username and password. I've tried altering some of the config files and my Google-fu to look for solutions, but no luck. Any tips? (This was not an issue under 8.04, if it matters)

Sharepoint Services 3.0: 403 Forbidden fun

Can't get to the Administration or the "companyweb" site itself; was working up to a week ago. Old threads, blog posts, etc. indicate that there was an issue with a KB update but was resolved when .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 was deployed/installed. Running Process Monitor, I can see a lot of PATH NOT FOUND','NAME NOT FOUND for c:\inetpub\companyweb\Default.aspx, \_themes\ice\...\foo.css, etc. for the w3wp.exe process on CreateFileorQueryOpenoperations. These files do not exist in the location specified. I don't recall these files actually existing in that folder, but I believe they're "created" when requested, pulled in from Common Files/Shared or whatever, in typically-awesome Microsoft Web architecture land (</rant>). Besides reinstalling (which I'm sure will be as much fun as migrating from one server to another was), anyone know what's going on? Google-fu has alluded me.

Dismissing systray balloons with the keyboard?

This is probably a supplementary question to how to access the systray using the keyboard... I've read that, and done some googling (google fu lacking, or there really is no answer), but I can't find a nice quick keyboard shortcut to dismiss those info balloons that apps in the system tray choose to display every now and then. The hints for access in the linked question can't be used to close the balloon (and least when I've tried them here). Now I know I can wait for a timeout and they'll go away but if I can just hit , that'd be fanstastic. So... anyone aware of a keyboard shortcut?

An SQLite/STDIN Conundrum, Specific to AIX

Hi there! I'm been playing around with SQlite at work, specifically with trying to get the sqlite3 command line tool to accept stdin instead of a file. Sounds easy enough, on linux you can execute a command like: echo 'test' | sqlite3 test.db '.import /dev/stdin test' unfortunately - our machines at work run AIX (5 & 6) and as far as I can tell, there is no equivalent to the virtual file /dev/stdin. I managed to hack together an equivalent command that works on AIX using a temporary file. echo 'test' | cat - > /tmp/blah ; sqlite3 test.db '.import /dev/stdin test' ; rm /tmp/blah Now, does it need to use STDIN? isn't this temporary file thing enough? Probably, but I was hoping someone with better unix-fu had a more elegant solution. note: the data I would like to import is only provided via STDOUT, so that's what the echo 'test' command is all about

Thanks in advance for your help! As the title states, I have Windows 7 x64 Boot Camp Partition, Snow Leopard on MBP, and VMWare Fusion 2.x/3.x. I'm trying to open the partition as a vm and I get into an endless cycle where windows tries to Repair Start Up disk for a very long time before failing. The boot camp partition runs fine natively. Has anyone experienced this? Can someone provide or link a remedy? My google fu is failing miserably ....

Is It Possible to Change Default Windows Idle Time for Task Scheduler?

From the official Microsoft docs: Detecting the Idle State The Task Scheduler service will verify that the computer is in an idle state every 15 minutes. The computer is considered idle if all the processors and all the disks were idle for more than 90% of the past 15 minutes and if there is no keyboard or mouse input during this period of time. Besides, any presentation type application that sets the ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED flag will make Task Scheduler to not consider the system as being idle. In Windows 7, Task Scheduler considers a processor as idle even when low priority threads (thread priority < normal) execute. Is there any way to change the time to less than 15 minutes minutes? Am I assuming this hard-coded and impossible? My Google-fu has eluded me so far and I found nothing, but wanted to check here before giving up.

How to search with Spotlight more effectively

I'm used to using various flags to modify the results of Google searches, to only show results from a particular site, or only certain kinds of files. For example you can restrict Spotlight searches to only look for pdf files like this example, when I'm looking for a pdf cheatsheet for using YUI's grid system css framework on my computer. YUI grid kind:pdf I'd be amazed if Apple's Spotlight didn't have loads of other handy flags to fine tune a search in the same way - what tricks do you use, or where do you look to find more tips to improve your Spotlight-fu?
