  As from subject. I want to see what's inside. I am seriously interested in finding the owner if possible and returning them, but I am worried it could be an attempt at social engineering. I own a macbook intel with OSX 10.6. It is a very important install. What would you do in my situation if you want to see the content without risks ? Any proposal welcome. • USB devices don't work after restoring from Stand By

  Hi. I'm running Windows XP SP3 on a NEC Versa L1100 laptop. If I wake my laptop up from Stand By, no attached USB devices will function. Device Manager shows all USB entries to be working properly. There is an option to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in the Power Management properties of USB entries. Is this causing the issue or something else? I have the latest drivers for my motherboard installed.

• USB drivers stopped working in Windows 8

  I have installed an MSDN version of Windows 8 Professional (x64) RTM. For about 3 restarts everything worked well. But once I've rebooted again - USB drivers (all of them, inluding the USB 3 drivers) stopped working. Device Manager properties said that the USB driver is not compatible with the system. Gigabyte doesn't list Windows 8 drivers for my MB X58A-UD3R. Tried to reinstall windows 7 USB drivers - system said the current driver is fine and didn't want to reinstall. Is this the common Windows 8 problem? How can solve it or debug it even more?

• "Boot Error" message when booting Ubuntu 9.10 from USB sticks (Occurs only on 1 PC)

  Hey, Since today suddenly both my USB ubuntu installations (2 different USB sticks) try to boot and nothing loads but all I see is a message saying "Boot Error". When I press space it continues booting from the main hard drive. I tried reinstalling ubuntu on the USB stick but same error. This only happens on 1 computer and started happening today, before it worked just fine. Any idea what's causing this ? Regards, Xeross

• Lenovo Thinkpad T430 not booting from HDD if there is a USB modem connected

  I have a T430 Levono Thinkpad running Win7. I use a ZTE USB modem (something like this) for my internet connection. I usually keep the modem plugged into the USB drive even when the laptop is shutdown or hibernating. This worked fine on my earlier laptops. But with the Lenovo, my laptop doesn't boot if the modem is in the USB drive. It shows the initial character based screen where it gives the Thinkpad message & BIOS details and then waits. If I pull out the modem, it goes ahead. I have disabled USB as a boot option in my BIOS settings, but even then this happens sometimes (but not all the times). Likewise while resuming from hibernation. The USB modem also has drivers & ISP connection client which getting installed the first time you use it on any machine. I have used multiple laptops (HP, DELL, Acer, Gateway) but never faced this problem before. I have friends who use other Thinkpad models but haven't faced this issue. Any resolutions, workarounds for this?

• Performance of external USB disk with ESXi5

  I have a new HP DL120 G7 server with ESXi5. One VM is a Win2003 instalation and I have an external USB2.0 drive attached by USB Controller and USB Device. I copy a 4GB file from external USB to server disk. In the VM that takes up to 10 minutes. On a native Win2003 that takes aprox. 3 minutes. I have no explaination for that diference: In any case the bottleneck is the USB connection, much slower than the disks (SAS, RAID1). If the USB connection on the VM would be USB1.1 and not USB2.0 it would take much more time. (The disk performance between server partitions on the VM is correct. - see update) Could be that my native box is extremely fast and the VM is the normal case. ??? Update I try with passtrough and a first run copy the same data in aprox. 7 minutes. Still 2 times slower than the native connection. I also did another messure and the copy between partitions on the same VM takes 3 minutes.

• USB 3.0 Device not detected in Windows 8

  About my setup: Windows 8 64-bit. X79-UD3 Motherboard. Latest Windows 8 USB 3.0 Drivers from motherboard manufacturer website. All right so device manager detects my USB 3.0 ports, so all is well there. However when I plug in my external USB 3.0 hard drive, windows doesn't even make a beep; the hard drive is not picked up by device manager at all. The SAME thing happens with Ubuntu 12.10 BUT adding PCI=nomsi (as a workaround) to the Grub command line of the Ubuntu boot option makes Ubuntu 12.10 detect my external hard drive. I also have a few other doubts, if you guys would be kind enough to answer them that include: Should XHCI hand-off in the UEFI bios be enabled or disabled for Windows 8? The difference between XHCI hand-off and EHCI hand-off and what are it's effects on USB 3.0 functionality? And last but not least how can I get Windows 8 to recognize my external hard drive when Ubuntu 12.10 (after the Grub workaround) works fine?

• all USB "randomly" disconnect and reconnect

  I'm having a weird issue currently: at seemingly random times(although it seems to happen mostly when USB is used a lot, ie downloading + uploading over my WiFi stick or viewing an HD video from my external hard-drive) all my USB devices disconnect and reconnect after a few seconds. This wouldn't be a HUGE problem if I didn't have to rely on my USB for my internet, because now every time this happens my internet, and with it stuff like remote desktop, crashes. I'm running Windows 8 Pro 64 bit with a Gigabyte 990FXA-D3 motherboard. Now the weird thing: I had the same problem with my previous pc, which had a different motherboard(I think it was an Asus M4A785TD-V EVO). I googled a bit and didn't really find anything about this, only found out I could check if something shows up in the Event Viewer, and I get this error there when the USB crashes: "A timeout occurred while waiting for the EHCI host controller Interrupt on Async Advance Doorbell response." If you require any extra information I'm happy to provide it.

• How to Create Shortcuts to Programs on USB Drives

  If you work on multiple computers, you probably use a USB drive to take your favorite portable software with you. Portable application suites like PortableApps.com, CodySafe, or Lupo PenSuite, each have a main menu providing access to the programs installed into the suite. However, there may be reasons why you need to create shortcuts to programs on your USB drive. You may be using a program that does not integrate into the suite’s main menu. Or, you may not be using an official portable application suite at all, and just placing portable software in a folder on your USB drive. Maybe you prefer using shortcuts on the root of the USB drive, like a portable desktop. Whatever your reason, you can’t just create a shortcut to an application on the USB drive and place it in the root of the drive. The shortcut will always refer to the full path of the application, including the drive letter. Different computers assign different drive letters to USB flash drives, so you would have to change the drive letter for your shortcuts when it changes. You can assign a static drive letter to the USB drive. However, if you would rather not do that, there is a way to create shortcuts to programs on a USB drive using relative paths. Because Windows does not support relative paths in shortcuts, we will show you how to create a “shortcut” on the root of a USB drive by creating a batch (.bat) file and converting it to an executable (.exe) file. • External Hard Drive Won't Mount - MAC OSX

  I have a Western Digital hard drive that's about 4 or 5 years old. It's 500 GB, USB. I use it to backup my Mac every so often. I had it partitioned: 1 side for full backups, and the other side for general storage of music, installers, etc. I decided to get rid of the partition today and dump all the data. So I opened disk utility, and hit 'erase'. It started thinking and then disk utility crashed. After the crash, the hard drive won't mount, however disk utility still sees the drive, but not the individual volume within. I tried booting up Disk Warrior and no luck there either. It has the drive as an "unknown drive". When I hit rebuild, it goes through all it steps and then stops cause of this error: The drive "unknown" is severely damaged and DiskWarrior is unable to determine its case sensitivity What can I do at this point? There isn't any physical damage to the drive. Never been dropped or anything.

• IDE/PATA high-speed hard drive dock

  I frequently need to access bare drives for backups and need a quick, high-speed way to deal with them. There are a multitude of SATA hard drive docks (for example), but I have a lot of IDE/PATA (hereafter "IDE") drives that I would like to be able to use similarly. There are IDE-to-SATA adapters so you can plug your IDE hard drive into a SATA port, so I don't see any reason why you couldn't use the same technology to have a native dock, yet none seems to exist. Now, I'm aware that 3.5" IDE drives do not have a specification for the layout of the connector, and therefore can't be slapped into a dock the same way a SATA drive could, but 2.5" PATA drives do. In fact, I'm not terribly interested in supporting 3.5" drives. It would be nice, but I deal with them far less frequently than 2.5" drives. Also, I'd very much like for the connection to the computer be faster than USB, preferably eSATA, I don't want to be spending time mounting a drive inside an enclosure, I don't want bare drives lying around with a cable hanging off of them, and I'd prefer a single dock rather than two. What seems like the ideal solution to me would be a regular SATA→eSATA dock and some sort of screwless adapter for IDE drives, but I'm open to any suggestions, regardless of my stated preferences, but which are, in some sort of order of preference: high-speed (faster than USB, at least) holder for drive (not just a cable) no complicated enclosure support for 3.5" IDE drives single dock Updates: Here's a 3.5" IDE to 3.5" SATA docking adapter that could be part of the solution. Weird. I figured that would be the impossible part. I was hoping to find something like this 2.5" to 3.5" SATA chassis that would take a 44-pin IDE drive internally. It looks like the Vantec EZ Swap EX comes awfully close. It has its own bay dock, but it looks like the SATA ports on the back are spaced properly, even if they're not aligned quite properly. Unfortunately, the proper position is at the very edge of the drive, which means that the docks' connectors are at the very edge of their recesses, which means there's no way to fit it in there.

• Populating a drive that was formated to ntsf on seperate computer

  I recently downloaded some files that were over 4gb and wouldnt do a straight transfer to a external hd. this is all being done on a serperate computer we shall call computer1. my computer(computer2) is where im trying to get the files too. i used cmd to "Soft format" the drive to NTSF on computer1 so i could then take the drive to transfer the files to computer2. this was suppose to allow the format change without losing the files i had on there already... after the proccess was done i checked the drive on computer1 and all the old files were there and working....when i took the drive back to computer2 to transfer the files i had just downloaded from computer2 my computer...computer1:wont reconize or populate the external drive so it can give it a drive letter and function. the external drive works fine on computer1, but how do i get it to work again on computer2? when i try to populate it, i cant access the properties function in order to make permissions for everyone so it is reconized....any help would be greatfull..... also i am running windows 7 ultimate edition if that helps.

There's a very great deal of technical discussion about EFI etc. but this set of instructions seems to suggest it should Just Work, and it doesn't. Help? I'm increasingly unhappy with the more locked-down approach Apple is taking, and I'd quite like to start using Linux with a view to transitioning over to using it as my main operating system, but booting from the CD takes forever, runs slowly and I'm really hoping to get it moving off USB. Can anybody help me?

  I have a MicroSD card in a USB adapter (which plugs into a USB port on my machine, and acts like a USB flash drive). I was using Unetbootin to make this a bootable USB flash drive with Kubuntu. But I needed to cancel while it was working. So I killed the Unetbootin process from the console. Since then, I can't format the MicroSD or delete the folder that Kubuntu made. I have also tried mkdosfs, with no success. I can't mount the drive anymore either? What can I do, to make this drive usable again? Trying to create a new partition table in GParted, as described in Eliah Kagan's answer, does not work. It fails with the error message "imposible crear tabla de particiones" ("unable to create a partition table").

• Google Drive terminates without error on startup

  I've used Google Drive for awhile now, but it won't start up after installing on my latest system re-build. I'm still using the same OS, hardware, and basic software load (antivirus, firewall, etc.) that I have for years during which I had not previously had problems with Drive. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Google Drive Version: 1.12.5329.1887 Now, whenever I try to run Google Drive, it just spawns two instances of the executable which die shortly after. No error messages are posted to the desktop, and nothing indicating any problem is written to the Event Log. After some research, I've yet to find anyone having the same problem who's found an answer. I did find out how to run Google Drive in diagnostic mode, using the --vv parameter at the command line. • Can realtek 8192cu usb wireless card be used in ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.2.0?

  I do like the post RTL8188CUS Wireless USB Dongle doesn't work unless I disable wireless security . But when I plug my 8192cu usb wireless card, my computer screen is off. At that time I even can not use Alt SysRq k or Alt SysRq + reisub. I compile the latest driver of 8192cu on ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.2.0-34. In RealTek site, I download 8192cu drive which is for Linux Kernel 2.6.18~2.6.38 and Kernel 3.0.8. But now in Ubuntu12.04 my kernel is 3.2.0-34. Every time I plug the usb 8192cu wireless card my system halts. Now I try to blacklist both the system's rtl8192cu driver and the new 8192cu driver I compile, but the system still halts when I plug the usb driver. What about you ? Thanks!

• 750Gig Hard Drive shows full with only 315Gigs used

  I have a Win7 laptop with a 750Gig C: drive. It came partitioned with 714Gig usable from manufacturer. I installed programs, music files, etc up to 285 gigs. As of a few weeks ago it showed 285 Gigs. Two weeks of house guests later and it shows HD is full. I deleted some files but it still shows 652 Gigs on this drive while there are only 285 Gigs on drive. Relevant details: I am Administrator on laptop and have fair knowledge of what I am doing. I did not restore from backup, restore from mirror, upgrade HD's or anything else that would have touched the partition structure. Just daily use as imaging machine and web. I have checked partitions under disk administrator - no change, still partitioned with 714Gigs usable. Have looked through computer C drive by hand showing Hidden files and folders - no change. I have used JDisk Report to double check - it shows I have only 285 Gigs on C drive. I triple checked with TreeSize run as Administrator and it also shows 285 Gigs on C drive - yet Windows 7 still shows almost full. I used Windows 7 Utilities to Check for Disk Errors, and Defragged the drive. No errors shown and no change after Defrag.

• Laptop Hard Drive Cable

  I am about to have to dig into my wifes laptop to pull the hard drive out to pull the data off since the rest of it is close to dieing. I am curious what I should expect to have to deal with to get data off the hard drive. I am assuming its a SATA drive.
