• Debian as USB hardware portable as possible

  I have recent hardware, 64 bit, pae and so on. But I'd like to have my Debian installation on a USB HDD. Installing Debian to USB is solved. I used the i386 architecture image. But a pae kernel has been installed. I want to be able to travel with my USB HDD and therefore I want best possible hardware compatibility. My friends and family have sometimes older hardware, but always i386, just sometimes without 64 bit or pae. Never met someone with sparc or other architectures. What should I do to get non-pae kernel and maximum hardware compatibility?

  After I installed Mac OSX Maverick 10.9 to my Mac Computer. I have a problem with installing Microsoft Windows 8.1 into my Mac my using Bootcamp. I try some third party software such as Win USB Boot Maker and Rufus. These softwares can make USB Boot disk for non Mac computer however they cannot make it work with Mac. • USB 3.0 not functioning fully

  After installing GNU/Linux today onto my Lenovo Y570 laptop, I ran into an issue quickly - the USB 3.0 support. 2/3 of my USB ports are 3.0 so I kind of need them. The ports are powered at the very least - my phone is charging from one, however, plugging in external drives, USB drives, or even a mouse gives no response. The drives spin up, etc, but they do nothing more than that. So there is power, but no information flowing to them. What am I missing here? What can I try to enable to make things work?

  USB serial ports, especially devices which emulate serial ports, don't quite behave the same as old serial ports, which causes a few problems with some software. old serial ports, always existed, they never come and go out of existence. With USB devices that emulate serial ports, they come and go depending on whether they are powered / reset etc. Is there a way under windows to make the USB serial port permanently exist regardless of the presence of the device? (not just come back as the same name as it was before).

  I am using Fedora 12, the problem I am facing is USB 2.0 write speed. I have a dual boot system with Windows XP and Fedora 12. USB 2.0 write speed in Windows XP is much faster then what I am getting in Fedora 12. After searching Google I came to know that ehci_hcd module is missing/not present in my system. ehci_hcd module is neither loaded nor it is present in the available list of modules. Can someone guide me how to fix this issue? Does ehci_hcd have something to do with USB 2.0 write speed? Do I have to recompile the kernel and add/enable the ehci_hcd module?

• How to disable power to USB ports when laptop is in sleep mode

  I have a Windows7 laptop with two external 2.5" HDDs and a cooling pad connected through USB ports. When I put the laptop to sleep, these devices are still powered on - the fan in the cooling pad is still spinning, the drives are still spinning. I want to set it all up so that they power down when in sleep. I tried setting the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option in the USB Root Hubs' Properties in Device Manager and enabling USB selective suspend in power options - it didn't work. As it's a laptop, BIOS options are extremely locked down, so I can't even see anything relevant to sleep in there. Is it even possible to do this?

• USB driver problems (Windows 8.1)

  Every time I turn on my laptop the USB ports don't work and the drivers have an error. In order to fix this I'm forced to start the Device Manager, uninstall all the USB drivers, open the Control Panel, click Find and fix problems (under System and Security), click Configure a device (under Hardware and Sound) and then when that window pops up just hit Next until I can see my USB drivers reinstalled and working in the Device Manager window under Universal Serial Bus controllers. I found this way to fix it but I would like a permanent solution so that I don't have to do this every time I turn on the machine. Any ideas? When I bought the machine it had Window 7 installed but I later upgraded it to Windows 8.0 and then 8.1 after that.

Partition 2 (ext3) - Ubuntu Linux 64 bit. Partition 3 (fat32) - contains data. What would be the best way to enable this drive to boot under Mac OS X? And if refit has to be used, could I simply have one more partition on the USB drive containing it? Thanks!

  Here is a question a student asked me in one of my A+ certification classes: How can you tell a USB cable version? I honestly dont know the answer, I cant find one either. USB cables are rated for versions 1, 1.1, 2, and now 3. I have seen their versions on the packaging, but never marked on the cable itself. Since the respective versions are manufactured differently, there is a difference between them. So, how can you tell? On Wikipedia: USB cables v.2 and earlier do use a "twisted pair" method, but doesnt specify if the cables themselves are the same or different. Is the cable rating system for v.2 and earlier just marketing hype?

• USB port not recognising mouse on first bootup

  On a computer here when first powered on the USB wired mouse is not recognised. The light under the mouse is not lit up. Other usb hub's and keyboards work fine. Disconnecting it and reconnecting it fixes the issue, even after a restart - after the pc is switched off for a length of time (for example overnight) the problem reappears. I swapped the mouse, updated the bios and installed updated intellimouse drivers, turned of power saving on the usb ports. Any ideas?

  My dog took a leak on my PC when I went out (ye funny), now it reandomly restarts - im convinced the HDD is failing because the Windows seagate diagnostic program fails on a few tests. I want to run this prior to windows in an attempt to try and recover sectors, the program includes an iso which can be written to cd and booted, but i dont have any cd's. I tried using unetbootin to create the bootable usb from the iso file (SeaToolsDOS222ALL.576.ISO) but it doesnt work. When i boot from the usb hdd unetbootin loads with "default" in the menu. No joy booting though. I checked the usb hdd in windows and all the files are there, extracted from the iso file, wont boot though. Any ideas? Im using windows xp, or

  TLDR I want toggle between the following usages of a usb-port via the terminal: use like a normal usb-port only supply energy to charge Story I recently got me something like a magna doodle that can save your drawings to pdf, which can be moved to your computer via usb afterwards. Now the thing is that you can't save anything while it's plugged in. Because it's the only way to charge it, it bugs me that I can't find a software solution and laziness I want to keep it plugged in and toggle the connection to the computer only when needed. I noticed that it's charging and usable when it is plugged in and the computer is shut down or suspened. So I guess that there's a way to do it.   What are my options to forward two USB connected phones to xen guest? I've read about PCI-passthrough http://www.wlug.org.nz/XenPciPassthrough, but I'm sure usb controller in the server isn't a pci card. • Wireless controllers vs wireless usb hub

  For my htpc i currently only have a steerin wheel as a controller. This is wired and it looks really bad having extended usb wires from the tv to the table. However im thinking of bying some new Gamepads and now comes the question. Should i buy wireless ones or wired and connect them to a wireless usb hub? Having a wireless hub would let me manage my gamepads easily from the couch. A wireless hub also allows me to connect other things that are not input devices from the couch. However im wondering if wireless usb hubs may not be made for input devices in the way that they may not have 100% uptime and probably some delay. Am i right about this?

  I created a Centos Live 5.4 Bootable USB drive. I used this to install Centos on a HP Netbook. When the system goes to write the Grub boot loader to disk, it wants to write the boot loader to the usb drive (/dev/sda), not the hard disk (/dev/hda). I do have the option of writing the boot loader to /dev/hda, (not to the mbr!) but when I reboot I get an load error and the Grub prompt. How can I get Centos booting from the hard disk instead of using the USB key.

• MacBook Pro USB port provides more current in Mac OS X than in Windows

  I have a MacBook Pro with both Mac OS X Lion and Windows (under BootCamp) installed. While in Windows, I tried to charge my iPad 3 via the USB port. The iPad says "Not charging", but really, it does, just super slow (4-5% per hour). The reason for this is that the iPad requires 2.1 A of current, but a standard USB port provides 0.5 A. However, if I switch to Mac OS X, the iPad states that it is charging and it does at a rate of about 10% per hour. The only takeaway from this is that either OS X puts out more current on the USB port or that it recognizes the iPad and acts accordingly. Can someone provide more information on what is actually happening?

• Mount drive at /Volumes/NAME/ or similar in Cygwin

  Hi.. I'm using Cygwin on Windows 7. When I plug in an USB stick, the drive automatically gets mounted to /cygdrive/x . This is good and really easy to use. My problem is that the drive letter changes sometimes, and when I've got remotes set up in git - I've got one called usb at /cygdrive/h/ - this sometimes doesn't work and I have to change the remote URL. That's just an example, there are other scenarios where I wouldn't want it to change. I like what the Mac does, and puts mounts a volume at /Volumes/STICK (STICK is the Volume name of my usb stick). Is there any way I can do this, or something similar under Cygwin. Thanks

• Creating a command that compress a file and save it on a usb, but cannot detect the usb in linux.

  First of all I can't detect the USB on linux using the command line. I check the directory dev and still cannot find the usb. used the df command to check the usb. I plug and typed df and then unplug and typed df again and nothing changed. We are using a server(telnet) to use the command line of linux on a windows 7 OS. The second problem I have is how can I execute the bash script that I have made. It seems that I cant put my .sh file in /usr/bin/ I would like to make my command executable in all directories like a normal command. Sorry, im still newbie at this things.   I've found a few posts on this site, however my situation is different. I have a new Dell server with no OS installed. I would like to install Windows 2008 Web Edition. I have a few USB ports and Ethernet. No CD or DVD drives. Is this article the best & only way to proceed? Installing Windows 2008 via USB thumbdrive or should I just get a external hardrive and hook it up to a usb. Once the OS is installed I'll never need a DVD drive again - so that's idea is a waste of money.

• Printer demands specific USB port

  My HP laptop has 3 USB ports. When I add my printer driver by plugging into one of those ports, the driver installs fine. Problem: I have to install 3 identical drivers. One for each USB port. Depending on what USB port I have the printer plugged into, I have to pick the driver for that port. Question: How do I print to any of the three ports automatically based on what port the printer is in? Further into: In Devices and Printers Printer Properties Ports... I cannot select more than one port for a printer driver to print to.
