  Tunneling data over ssh is pretty straight-forward: ssh -D9999 [email protected] sets up port 9999 on your localhost as a tunnel to foreignhost.com, but I have more specific need: I am working locally on localhost host1 is accessible to localhost host2 only accepts connections from host1 I need to create a tunnel from localhost to host2 Effectively I want to create a "multi-hop" ssh tunnel. How can I do this? Ideally, I'd like to do this without needing to be superuser on any of the machines.

  Hello All, I am struggling to find anything on the interweb, We have a client and the email address we have been given for one of their employees contains 2 apostrophes. One of our team is struggling to send an email to said employee. The client says the email is valid, but the postmaster reply tells me otherwise. could not be delivered. The problem appears to be : -- Recipient email address is possibly incorrect Additional information follows : -- 550 5.1.1 <xx.xx'xxx'[email protected]>... User Unknown Could anyone shed any light; is this a problem with the user being unknown or is the 2 apostrophes causing an issue. EDIT: Is there any way to encode an apostrophe? Cheers

• Unable to copy multiple files from remote sftp via ssh

  I am trying to copy multiple (1000s) .JPG files from remote SFTP server to current server using mget command but it is not working. Here is the command that I used sftp [email protected] sftp> cd /images sftp> mget *.JPG Screenshot at http://i.stack.imgur.com/bSciQ.png Nothing happens so when I do CTRL + C it gives an error that says File "/images/*.JPG" not found. I have already referred all suggestions posted on the forum but nothing is working. Let me know if there is another way to copy.

  We have a small (100 machines) Windows domain running Server 2008R2. We use Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 I want to have GPO deploy the AV software to client machines automatically, but only to client workstations, not to servers, which run a different software. I've set it up before using a GPO linked to the domain mycompany.local and it works, but it deploys the AV software to ALL machines on the domain, including my servers. I can create an OU in active directory for Servers, and perhaps create one for client machines too, but I'd rather not have to go and move new domain members from the default under Computers into a different folder. How can I use GPO to deploy this AV software only to workstations on our network, and not to servers?

• How to choose which fields are available via LDAP from an Active Directory

  I'm using PHP to do an ldap search and then pull the attributes out using ldap_get_attributes. This returns an array of data (that can be seen here) however there are some fields that are missing such as Organization Title, department, company, address and telephone number. How to I make these fields available? There is a similar question here: http://www.petri.co.il/forums/showthread.php?t=15227 I've followed the steps outlined there an tried changing some access permissions but am not really sure what I'm doing and can't see any permissions that directly relate to the fields that I can see when I edit a user in the "Active Directory Users Computers" window. I am a PHP developer, not a Windows server administrator so am finding configuring an AD rather challenging so please don't assume any level of knowledge about AD. I've asked the same question on stack exchange but understand this is a more relevant place to ask.

• Cherrypy web application won't communicate outside localhost via VPN

  I'm trying to run a Python2.7/Cherrypy web server on Win 7 which is connected to a VPN to establish a dedicate IP address. (If I run the exact same application on Win XP connected to the VPN it works fine.) On Win 7 I tried configuring it to use port 8080, 8005, or 80 with no improvements. I turned off Windows Firewall altogether to test and there was no improvement. If I run Apache on the Win 7 machine on port 80 it works fine so I'm pretty sure it's not the VPN service or router. If I go to WhatismyIP.com it shows that I have the IP address being provided by the VPN. Here is the Python code, but I suspect the problem is the network configuration: import cherrypy class HelloWorld: def index(self): return "Hello world!3" index.exposed = True cherrypy.root = HelloWorld() cherrypy.config.update({"global":{ "server.environment": "production", "server.socketPort": 8005 } }) cherrypy.server.start() This will return a web page if I go to localhost:8005, but not if I go to the VPN IP address:8005 from another machine. • Denying access to website via htaccess based on http header

  I've been trying for ages to get this to work and I can't put my finger on it. What I'm trying to do is block access to a site from a number of countries, based on the CF-IPCountry header added by CloudFlare. I figured htaccess was a suitable way to do this. We are running LiteSpeed 4.2.4 on top of DirectAdmin for a control panel. The problem we having is the htaccess rule doesn't seem to do anything. Here's the rule we tried: SetEnvIf CF-IPCountry AU UnwantedCountry=1 Order allow,deny Deny from env=UnwantedCountry Allow from all That makes no difference at all, connections are still accepted. Just to check that the rule was at least being processed, I changed Allow from all to Deny from all, and connections were refused. So it appears to be a problem wit the variable. Here's the relevant headers that come in with the request.   I need to remotely install Ubuntu Server 10.04 (x86) on a server currently running RHEL 3.4 (x86). I'll have to be very careful because no one can press the restart button for me if anything goes wrong. Have you ever remotely installed Linux? Which way would you recommend? The main components of my method are drawn from HOWTO - Install Debian Onto a Remote Linux System, grub legacy: Booting once-only, grub single boot and kernel panic reboot , and Ubuntu Community Documentation: InstallationFromKnoppix Here is the outline of what I did: Run debootstrap on an existing Ubuntu server Transfer the files to the swap partition of the RHEL 3.4 server Boot into tha swap partition (the debootstrap system) Transfer the files to the original root partition Boot into the new Ubuntu system and finish up the installation with tasksel, apt-get, etc I tested the method in a VM and then applied to the server. I was lucky enough that everything went smoothly :)

• How do I open a file with a program via a shortcut from the cmd prompt

  Here's my predicament: When I add a program's location to my PATH, I can do the following in cmd prompt to open a file in my current directory: notepad++ open_me.txt And this opens open_me.txt in notepad++. However, I don't want to have to add every single program I want to run to my path. What I want is to add a folder called C:\Users\Me\Documents\Programs to my path and just drop shortcuts to various programs into that folder and have them function the same as adding them to my path. So I dropped a link to notepad++.exe named "np" in my folder, and what I got was this: I have to run it with start np (instead of just np) But more importantly, if I try start np open_me.txt, it opens notepad++.exe but looks for open_me.txt in notepad++'s directory. How can I do this properly? (Also, I'd like to be opening notepad++.exe with the shortened name of np)

  Is it possible to execute (from windows) a local script with arguments on a remote linux system? Here's what I got: plink 1.2.3.4 -l root -pw mypassword -m hello.sh Is there a way to do this same thing, but able to give input parameters to hello.sh? I've tried many things, including: plink 1.2.3.4 -l root -pw mypassword -m hello.sh input1 input2 In this case it seems that plink thinks that input1 and input2 are its arguments.. which makes sense. What are my options?

• Run GUI application via cronjob in Ubuntu?

  Hi, I have a remote server running "Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop". From it I want to run a script that walks through a list of websites and captures screenshots of them. The script is working and thoroughly tested. When I SSH to the server with ssh -X user@ip-adress I can run my script by calling ./myscript.py and everything will work OK. I then modifed my crontab file and added... 59 17 * * * env DISPLAY=:0 /path/to/myscript.py ...as recommended by the Ubuntu WIKI. I can see in the /var/log/syslog that my cron job is started, but it doesn't capture any screenshots. When running env DISPLAY=:0 /path/to/myscript.py from the shell I get No protocol specified myscript.py: cannot connect to X server :0 If I ssh to the server without the -X option I only get the second row of the error: myscript.py: cannot connect to X server :0 What can I try now? More details I have run xhost +local: and checked the output of xhost to see that the option was set correctly. If I run ls /tmp/.X11-unix/ the output is X0 The server only has one screen. • Connecting a laptop to a TV via HDMI

  I just bought a new Dell XPS17 laptop (Win7) that only has HDMI output. My last 2 laptops had VGA, which I used to connect to my Sony Bravia 32" TV with no issues, but with the HDMI it's been quite a headache. Drivers for display adapters have been updated to the latest versions: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M I went to a store and plugged in to 4 different TVs from different manufacturers. A sales rep and I spent about 30 minutes being baffled by the results (which are the same as my current TV): Extreme buggy behavior in the Nvidia and Windows display/resolution control panel Can not extend or duplicate displays, can only select one Third and fourth output devices "randomly" detected by the Windows control panel Could not get the screen to fit the output (edges cut off on all sides by about a half inch) Resolution and colors less than perfect. Artifacts around text. Display "randomly" cuts out Defaults to TV output only when plugged in Can not change resolution on either device when connected No audio from the TV Plugged in to 3 monitors from different manufacturers: Defaults to duplicated displays when plugged in Everything works perfectly So far, four people have gone through all the settings in the latop with no luck. I had similar, but not exactly matching results with a different laptop. I'm using the Sony Bravia currently at home, but in order to get it to work I have to turn on the laptop, wait until the display shows up on it, close the lid, then cycle through each output channel on the TV until I come back around to the HDMI port again, but still I have the symptoms described above. However: Once in a while, it just works. Sometimes, seemingly randomly, the output fits the screen perfectly. Sometimes the audio comes through the speakers too, but not always. Usually my screen saver "Mystify" will come up with a message that it cannot be displayed due to a limitation of the video card, but then sometimes it works fine. These 3 things seem to be independent of each other and don't always happen together. So, is there any way to get the laptop to output correctly to a TV, or is it just not meant to be?

• Implementing an isolated guest WLAN via IPSec VPN on Windows

  We are attempting to set up a guest WLAN network that is isolated from the rest of our network. This is proving difficult due to a couple of technical reasons. My first choice was to use a separate VLAN, on which our Firewall's handy WLAN port would handle DHCP, DNS and the network isolation we need. Unfortunately, due to the fact that our main office and our Internet connection itself are in different locations connected by way of a Metro Ethernet connection, I'm at the mercy of our ISP for VLAN transit. They won't pass a second VLAN between our two sites. And my hardware doesn't support 802.1ad "Q-in-Q", which would also solve this problem. So I can't use the VLAN method for isolation. At least not without spending money. As our Firewall can handle IPSec site-to-site VPN connections, I hope it is possible to connect a Server 2008R2 (standard) server I have in the office location to the WLAN and provide gateway services to the firewall. Thusly: Unfortunately, I don't know if it is possible to connect the two this way. The firewall has a pretty flexible IPSec/L2TP implementation (I've used it to connect iPads in the wild), but is neither Kerberized or supports NTLM. The Connection Security Rules view on the Windows server seems to get close to what I think needs to be done, but I'm failing on figuring out how to get it to do what I need it to do. Is this even possible, or do I need to pursue alternate solution?

  I want to transpose data in Excel. Normally, I cut the cells I need, and use paste special - transpose. However, sometimes when I do paste special, a box comes up asking me if I want to use unicode text vs normal text. How do I transpose this text? Is there a way to get past the unicode dialog box and get to the normal Paste special dialog box (that has the 'transpose' option)? Or, is there another simple way to transpose cells? transpose = flip rows and columns IE 1, 2, 3 becomes: 1 2 3

• Network Drive Via Ethernet Port for Speed?

  I have a Macbook with Firewire 400 and USB 2.0, so the only way I can get fast external storage is through the Ethernet port. A really fast firewire 800 drive on ANOTHER computer is actually much faster than the built-in drive (according to XBench). So I thought I would try to go one better and buy an ethernet-ready drive. I bought a Seagate GoFlex™ Home Network Storage System, and it seems like the only way to get it to work is to plug it into a router. Can this drive be used without a router (i.e., direct to computer)? Are there any drives that can be plugged directly into the ethernet port for fast access? I don't want the drive on my router: I want it on my computer. Ideally I'd need 7200rpm or faster, too... Update: Just chatted with Seagate and they said that this particular drive will not work that way. Will any others?

• How to determine main movie DVD track before ripping via mencoder

  Maybe there's a simple answer for this, but when looking at the files on a DVD (IFOs, VOBs,etc), is there a way to easily determine the longest/main track? I'm trying to automate the process of finding the main movie track on a DVD and am running into issues. I thought this could be done by finding the BIGGEST track (look through VTS_XX_N.VOB files, where XX is the track number, and find the track with the largest filesize (sum sizes of VOB files for that track)), but apparently that isn't correct. One DVD had track 7 as the largest track (by my method), but mencoder didn't produce the correct output with this track, but worked with track 9 instead. Am I missing something? EDIT: I've heard of the utility 'lsdvd' for getting track information, but I was hoping to avoid compiling this, and use a basic method instead (ie: what I tried above). Does anyone have any idea WHY my idea didn't work?

  I have written a stored procedure in MSSQL Server 2008 R2 which sends emails when my Application logs errors. It works fine on servers at our office but when I ran it on our remote servers I got must issue a starttls command first So maybe there is a setting somewhere which is different between the two servers, and that's why it's working on one and not the other. How do I set the server so that it issues a "starttls commaned first"?

  Good morning, I have a registry key that changes local users Internet Explorer LAN Settings to uncheck the "Automatically detect settings" tickbox. When I add this policy to the Terminal Servers user group it has no effect. I exported this key from my own registry after unticking the box. My computer runs Windows Vista Business Edition. Environment: We are using Server 2008 RC2 environment - two terminal servers with a session broker. Any idea's on how to get this working?

  Has anyone experience of using such combination? Exactly with the same model (or from same model line). How does it works? How hard is to set up all that? What difficulties? I use this router a couple of years, but now i haven't such external drive at my disposal. I want to buy something like Verbatim 47591 or Western Digital WDH1NC10000.
