    I have a newbie Linux programming question. Suppose I have a project that uses Autotools for compiling and deployment, and I have data files that are to be installed in a location like /var/something or /usr/share/something etc., but in Autoconf, I can change these installation paths. How should the program find these files? How does it know where they are actually installed (if anywhere, since the program should work even if not installed, but run from where it was built)?

    I had to reinstall my OS, and so, I reinstalled django. Since reinstalling, when I run tests in my app, I get several failures from django.contrib.auth. Some of my own code fails its tests, because it's not fully written yet, but that shouldn't cause django to fail it's core tests...

    Hi everyone! I just wanted to know if any of you had any problems using java default HttpURLConnection class. Some kind of bug that made you switch to apache commons. Or is it just the (ugly) interface that class exposes that justifies the birth of 3rd party http lib? Disclosure: I heard some arguments against java.net having some serious problems, but I'm finding hard to believe that a class that is part of the java core distribution still has issues after several releases of the JDK

    Id like to convert it to uppercase for the simple purpose of formatting so it will adhere to a future case statement. As I thought case statements are case sensitive. I see all over the place the tr command used in concert with echo commands to give you immediate results such as: echo "Enter in Location (i.e. SDD-134)" read answer (user enters "cfg" echo $answer | tr '[:lower:]' '[:upper:]' which produced cfg # first echo not upper? echo $answer #echo it again and it is now upper...     Hi, I'm new to m4 and am trying to set up a macro which allows the user to specify the location of a library at configure-time ./configure --with-mylib=/path/to/lib.so. In the m4 macro using AC_ARG_WITH, I'll check that the given file actually exists, and then store the path to said lib. MYLIB_PATH=esyscmd([dirname $withval]). This produces the error: dirname: missing operand The shell doesn't seem to know about $withval. How do I get it through to execute this command? Thanks, Andrew
