  • ASP.NET WebControl ITemplate child controls are null

    - by tster
    Here is what I want: I want a control to put on a page, which other developers can place form elements inside of to display the entities that my control is searching. I have the Searching logic all working. The control builds custom search fields and performs searches based on declarative C# classes implementing my SearchSpec interface. Here is what I've been trying: I've tried using ITemplate on a WebControl which implements INamingContainer I've tried implementing a CompositeControl The closest I can get to working is below. OK I have a custom WebControl [ AspNetHostingPermission(SecurityAction.Demand, Level = AspNetHostingPermissionLevel.Minimal), AspNetHostingPermission(SecurityAction.InheritanceDemand, Level = AspNetHostingPermissionLevel.Minimal), DefaultProperty("SearchSpecName"), ParseChildren(true), ToolboxData("<{0}:SearchPage runat=\"server\"> </{0}:SearchPage>") ] public class SearchPage : WebControl, INamingContainer { [Browsable(false), PersistenceMode(PersistenceMode.InnerProperty), DefaultValue(typeof(ITemplate), ""), Description("Form template"), TemplateInstance(TemplateInstance.Single), TemplateContainer(typeof(FormContainer))] public ITemplate FormTemplate { get; set; } public class FormContainer : Control, INamingContainer{ } public Control MyTemplateContainer { get; private set; } [Bindable(true), Category("Behavior"), DefaultValue(""), Description("The class name of the SearchSpec to use."), Localizable(false)] public virtual string SearchSpecName { get; set; } [Bindable(true), Category("Behavior"), DefaultValue(true), Description("True if this is query mode."), Localizable(false)] public virtual bool QueryMode { get; set; } private SearchSpec _spec; private SearchSpec Spec { get { if (_spec == null) { Type type = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().GetTypes().Where(t => t.Name == SearchSpecName).First(); _spec = (SearchSpec)Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().CreateInstance(type.Namespace + "." + type.Name); } return _spec; } } protected override void CreateChildControls() { if (FormTemplate != null) { MyTemplateContainer = new FormTemplateContainer(this); FormTemplate.InstantiateIn(MyTemplateContainer); Controls.Add(MyTemplateContainer); } else { Controls.Add(new LiteralControl("blah")); } } protected override void RenderContents(HtmlTextWriter writer) { // <snip> } protected override HtmlTextWriterTag TagKey { get { return HtmlTextWriterTag.Div; } } } public class FormTemplateContainer : Control, INamingContainer { private SearchPage parent; public FormTemplateContainer(SearchPage parent) { this.parent = parent; } } then the usage: <tster:SearchPage ID="sp1" runat="server" SearchSpecName="TestSearchSpec" QueryMode="False"> <FormTemplate> <br /> Test Name: <asp:TextBox ID="testNameBox" runat="server" Width="432px"></asp:TextBox> <br /> Owner: <asp:TextBox ID="ownerBox" runat="server" Width="427px"></asp:TextBox> <br /> Description: <asp:TextBox ID="descriptionBox" runat="server" Height="123px" Width="432px" TextMode="MultiLine" Wrap="true"></asp:TextBox> </FormTemplate> </tster:SearchPage> The problem is that in the CodeBehind, the page has members descriptionBox, ownerBox and testNameBox. However, they are all null. Furthermore, FindControl("ownerBox") returns null as does this.sp1.FindControl("ownerBox"). I have to do this.sp1.MyTemplateContainer.FindControl("ownerBox") to get the control. How can I make it so that the C# Code Behind will have the controls generated and not null in my Page_Load event so that developers can just do this: testNameBox.Text = "foo"; ownerBox.Text = "bar"; descriptionBox.Text = "baz";

  • Python bindings for a vala library

    - by celil
    I am trying to create python bindings to a vala library using the following IBM tutorial as a reference. My initial directory has the following two files: test.vala using GLib; namespace Test { public class Test : Object { public int sum(int x, int y) { return x + y; } } } test.override %% headers #include <Python.h> #include "pygobject.h" #include "test.h" %% modulename test %% import gobject.GObject as PyGObject_Type %% ignore-glob *_get_type %% and try to build the python module source test_wrap.c using the following code build.sh #/usr/bin/env bash valac test.vala -CH test.h python /usr/share/pygobject/2.0/codegen/h2def.py test.h > test.defs pygobject-codegen-2.0 -o test.override -p test test.defs > test_wrap.c However, the last command fails with an error $ ./build.sh Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/pygobject/2.0/codegen/codegen.py", line 1720, in <module> sys.exit(main(sys.argv)) File "/usr/share/pygobject/2.0/codegen/codegen.py", line 1672, in main o = override.Overrides(arg) File "/usr/share/pygobject/2.0/codegen/override.py", line 52, in __init__ self.handle_file(filename) File "/usr/share/pygobject/2.0/codegen/override.py", line 84, in handle_file self.__parse_override(buf, startline, filename) File "/usr/share/pygobject/2.0/codegen/override.py", line 96, in __parse_override command = words[0] IndexError: list index out of range Is this a bug in pygobject, or is something wrong with my setup? What is the best way to call code written in vala from python? EDIT: Removing the extra line fixed the current problem, but now as I proceed to build the python module, I am facing another problem. Adding the following C file to the existing two in the directory: test_module.c #include <Python.h> void test_register_classes (PyObject *d); extern PyMethodDef test_functions[]; DL_EXPORT(void) inittest(void) { PyObject *m, *d; init_pygobject(); m = Py_InitModule("test", test_functions); d = PyModule_GetDict(m); test_register_classes(d); if (PyErr_Occurred ()) { Py_FatalError ("can't initialise module test"); } } and building with the following script build.sh #/usr/bin/env bash valac test.vala -CH test.h python /usr/share/pygobject/2.0/codegen/h2def.py test.h > test.defs pygobject-codegen-2.0 -o test.override -p test test.defs > test_wrap.c CFLAGS="`pkg-config --cflags pygobject-2.0` -I/usr/include/python2.6/ -I." LDFLAGS="`pkg-config --libs pygobject-2.0`" gcc $CFLAGS -fPIC -c test.c gcc $CFLAGS -fPIC -c test_wrap.c gcc $CFLAGS -fPIC -c test_module.c gcc $LDFLAGS -shared test.o test_wrap.o test_module.o -o test.so python -c 'import test; exit()' results in an error: $ ./build.sh ***INFO*** The coverage of global functions is 100.00% (1/1) ***INFO*** The coverage of methods is 100.00% (1/1) ***INFO*** There are no declared virtual proxies. ***INFO*** There are no declared virtual accessors. ***INFO*** There are no declared interface proxies. • 3D game engine for networked world simulation / AI sandbox

    - by Martin
    More than 5 years ago I was playing with DirectSound and Direct3D and I found it really exciting although it took much time to get some good results with C++. I was a college student then. Now I have mostly enterprise development experience in C# and PHP, and I do it for living. There is really no chance to earn money with serious game development in our country. Each day more and more I find that I miss something. So I decided to spend an hour or so each day to do programming for fun. So my idea is to build a world simulation. I would like to begin with something simple - some human-like creatures that live their life - like Sims 3 but much more simple, just basic needs, basic animations, minimum graphic assets - I guess it won't be a city but just a large house for a start. The idea is to have some kind of a server application which stores the world data in MySQL database, and some client applications - body-less AI bots which simulate movement and some interactions with the world and each other. But it wouldn't be fun without 3D. So there are also 3D clients - I can enter that virtual world and see the AI bots living. When the bot enters visible area, it becomes material - loads a mesh and animations, so I can see it. When I leave, the bots lose their 3d mesh bodies again, but their virtual life still continues. With time I hope to make it like some expandable scriptable sandbox to experiment with various AI algorithms and so on. But I am not intended to create a full-blown MMORPG :D I have looked for many possible things I would need (free and open source) and now I have to make a choice: OGRE3D + enet (or RakNet). Old good C++. But won't it slow me down so much that I won't have fun any more? CrystalSpace. Formally not a game engine but very close to that. C++ again. MOgre (OGRE3D wrapper for .NET) + lidgren (networking library which is already used in some gaming projects). Good - I like C#, it is good for fast programming and also can be used for scripting. XNA seems just a framework, not an engine, so really have doubts, should I even look at XNA Game Studio :( Panda3D - full game engine with positive feedback. I really like idea to have all the toolset in one package, it has good reviews as a beginner-friendly engine...if you know Python. On the C++ side, Panda3D has almost non-existent documentation. I have 0 experience with Python, but I've heard it is easy to learn. And if it will be fun and challenging then I guess I would benefit from experience in one more programming language. Which of those would you suggest, not because of advanced features or good platform support but mostly for fun, easy workflow and expandability, and so I can create and integrate all the components I need - the server with the database, AI bots and a 3D client application?

  • Postmortem debugging with WinDBG.

    - by Drazar
    I have an WCF-service running on an server, and occasionally(1-2 times every month) it throws an COMException with the informative message ”Unknown error (0x8005008)”. When i googled for this particular error I only got threads about problems when creating virtual directories in IIS. And the source code hasn’t anything with making a virtual directory in IIS. DirectoryServiceLib.LdapProvider.Directory - CreatePost - Could not create employee for 195001010000,000000000000: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80005008): Unknown error (0x80005008) at System.DirectoryServices.PropertyValueCollection.PopulateList I've taken a memorydump when I catch the Exception for further analysis in WinDBG. After switching to the right thread I executed the !CLRStack command: 000000001b8ab6d8 000000007708671a [NDirectMethodFrameStandalone: 000000001b8ab6d8] Common.MemoryDump.MiniDumpWriteDump(IntPtr, Int32, IntPtr, MINIDUMP_TYPE, IntPtr, IntPtr, IntPtr) 000000001b8ab680 000007ff002808d8 DomainBoundILStubClass.IL_STUB_PInvoke(IntPtr, Int32, IntPtr, MINIDUMP_TYPE, IntPtr, IntPtr, IntPtr) 000000001b8ab780 000007ff00280812 Common.MemoryDump.CreateMiniDump(System.String) 000000001b8ab7e0 000007ff0027b218 DirectoryServiceLib.LdapProvider.Directory.CreatePost(System.String, DirectoryServiceLib.Model.Post, DirectoryServiceLib.Model.Presumptions, Services.Common.SourceEnum, System.String) 000000001b8ad6d8 000007fef8816869 [HelperMethodFrame: 000000001b8ad6d8] 000000001b8ad820 000007feec2b6c6f System.DirectoryServices.PropertyValueCollection.PopulateList() 000000001b8ad860 000007feec225f0f System.DirectoryServices.PropertyValueCollection..ctor(System.DirectoryServices.DirectoryEntry, System.String) 000000001b8ad8a0 000007feec22d023 System.DirectoryServices.PropertyCollection.get_Item(System.String) 000000001b8ad8f0 000007ff00274d34 Common.DirectoryEntryExtension.GetStringAttribute(System.String) 000000001b8ad940 000007ff0027f507 DirectoryServiceLib.LdapProvider.DirectoryPost.Copy(DirectoryServiceLib.LdapProvider.DirectoryPost) 000000001b8ad980 000007ff0027a7cf DirectoryServiceLib.LdapProvider.Directory.CreatePost(System.String, DirectoryServiceLib.Model.Post, DirectoryServiceLib.Model.Presumptions, Services.Common.SourceEnum, System.String) 000000001b8adbe0 000007ff00279532 DirectoryServiceLib.WCFDirectory.CreatePost(System.String, DirectoryServiceLib.Model.Post, DirectoryServiceLib.Model.Presumptions, Services.Common.SourceEnum, System.String) 000000001b8adc60 000007ff001f47bd DynamicClass.SyncInvokeCreatePost(System.Object, System.Object[], System.Object[]) My conclusion is that it fails when the code is calling System.DirectoryServices.PropertyCollection.get_Item(System.String). So after issuing an !CLRStack -a I get this result: 000000001b8ad8a0 000007feec22d023 System.DirectoryServices.PropertyCollection.get_Item(System.String) PARAMETERS: this = <no data> propertyName = <no data> LOCALS: <CLR reg> = 0x0000000001dcef78 <no data> My very first question is why does it display no data on the propertyname? I am kinda new on Windbg. However I executed an dumpobject on = 0x0000000001dcef78: 0:013> !do 0x0000000001dcef78 Name: System.String MethodTable: 000007fef66d6960 EEClass: 000007fef625eec8 Size: 74(0x4a) bytes File: C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\assembly\GAC_64\mscorlib\v4.0_4.0.0.0__b77a5c561934e089\mscorlib.dll String: personalprescriptioncode Fields: MT Field Offset Type VT Attr Value Name 000007fef66dc848 40000ed 8 System.Int32 1 instance 24 m_stringLength 000007fef66db388 40000ee c System.Char 1 instance 70 m_firstChar 000007fef66d6960 40000ef 10 System.String 0 shared static Empty >> Domain:Value 0000000000174e10:00000000019d1420 000000001a886f50:00000000019d1420 << So when the source code wants to fetch the personalprescriptioncode from Active Directory(what is used for persistence layer) it fails. Looking back at the stack it is when issuing the Copy method. DirectoryServiceLib.LdapProvider.DirectoryPost.Copy(DirectoryServiceLib.LdapProvider.DirectoryPost) So looking in the sourcecode: DirectoryPost postInLimbo = DirectoryPostFactory.Instance().GetDirectoryPost(LdapConfigReader.Instance().GetConfigValue("LimboDN"), idGenPerson.ID.UserId); if (postInLimbo != null) newPost.Copy(postInLimbo); This code is looking for another post in OU=limbo with the same UserId and if it finds one it copies the attributes to the new post. In this case it does and it fails with personalprescriptioncode. I've looked in Active Directory under OU=Limbo and the post exist there with the attribute personalprescriptioncode=31243. Question 1: Why does it display no data for some of the PARAMETERS and LOCALS? Is it the GC who has cleaned up before the memorydump had been created. Question 2: Is there anymore i can do to get to the solution to this problem?

  • Persistence classes in Qt

    - by zarzych
    Hi, I'm porting a medium-sized CRUD application from .Net to Qt and I'm looking for a pattern for creating persistence classes. In .Net I usually created abstract persistence class with basic methods (insert, update, delete, select) for example: public class DAOBase<T> { public T GetByPrimaryKey(object primaryKey) {...} public void DeleteByPrimaryKey(object primaryKey) {...} public List<T> GetByField(string fieldName, object value) {...} public void Insert(T dto) {...} public void Update(T dto) {...} } Then, I subclassed it for specific tables/DTOs and added attributes for DB table layout: [DBTable("note", "note_id", NpgsqlTypes.NpgsqlDbType.Integer)] [DbField("note_id", NpgsqlTypes.NpgsqlDbType.Integer, "NoteId")] [DbField("client_id", NpgsqlTypes.NpgsqlDbType.Integer, "ClientId")] [DbField("title", NpgsqlTypes.NpgsqlDbType.Text, "Title", "")] [DbField("body", NpgsqlTypes.NpgsqlDbType.Text, "Body", "")] [DbField("date_added", NpgsqlTypes.NpgsqlDbType.Date, "DateAdded")] class NoteDAO : DAOBase<NoteDTO> { } Thanks to .Net reflection system I was able to achieve heavy code reuse and easy creation of new ORMs. The simplest way to do this kind of stuff in Qt seems to be using model classes from QtSql module. Unfortunately, in my case they provide too abstract an interface. I need at least transactions support and control over individual commits which QSqlTableModel doesn't provide. Could you give me some hints about solving this problem using Qt or point me to some reference materials? Update: Based on Harald's clues I've implemented a solution that is quite similar to the .Net classes above. Now I have two classes. UniversalDAO that inherits QObject and deals with QObject DTOs using metatype system: class UniversalDAO : public QObject { Q_OBJECT public: UniversalDAO(QSqlDatabase dataBase, QObject *parent = 0); virtual ~UniversalDAO(); void insert(const QObject &dto); void update(const QObject &dto); void remove(const QObject &dto); void getByPrimaryKey(QObject &dto, const QVariant &key); }; And a generic SpecializedDAO that casts data obtained from UniversalDAO to appropriate type: template<class DTO> class SpecializedDAO { public: SpecializedDAO(UniversalDAO *universalDao) virtual ~SpecializedDAO() {} DTO defaultDto() const { return DTO; } void insert(DTO dto) { dao->insert(dto); } void update(DTO dto) { dao->update(dto); } void remove(DTO dto) { dao->remove(dto); } DTO getByPrimaryKey(const QVariant &key); }; Using the above, I declare the concrete DAO class as following: class ClientDAO : public QObject, public SpecializedDAO<ClientDTO> { Q_OBJECT public: ClientDAO(UniversalDAO *dao, QObject *parent = 0) : QObject(parent), SpecializedDAO<ClientDTO>(dao) {} }; From within ClientDAO I have to set some database information for UniversalDAO. That's where my implementation gets ugly because I do it like this: QMap<QString, QString> fieldMapper; fieldMapper["client_id"] = "clientId"; fieldMapper["name"] = "firstName"; /* ...all column <-> field pairs in here... */ dao->setFieldMapper(fieldMapper); dao->setTable("client"); dao->setPrimaryKey("client_id"); I do it in constructor so it's not visible at a first glance for someone browsing through the header. In .Net version it was easy to spot and understand. Do you have some ideas how I could make it better?

  • How does versioning work when using Boost Serialization for Derived Classes?

    - by Venkata Adusumilli
    When a Client serializes the following data: InternationalStudent student; student.id("Client ID"); student.firstName("Client First Name"); student.country("Client Country"); the Server receives the following: ID = "Client ID" Country = "Client First Name" instead of the following: ID = "Client ID" Country = "Client Country" The only difference between the Server and Client classes is the First Name of the Student. How can we make the Server ignore First Name recieved from the Client and process the Country? Server Side Classes class Student { public: Student(){} virtual ~Student(){} public: std::string id() { return idM; } void id(std::string id) { idM = id; } protected: friend class boost::serialization::access; protected: std::string idM; protected: template<class A> void serialize(A& archive, const unsigned int /*version*/) { archive & BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP(idM); } }; class InternationalStudent : public Student { public: InternationalStudent() {} ~InternationalStudent() {} public: std::string country() { return countryM; } void country(std::string country) { countryM = country; } protected: friend class boost::serialization::access; protected: std::string countryM; protected: template<class A> void serialize(A& archive, const unsigned int /*version*/) { archive & BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP(boost::serialization::base_object<Student>(*this)); archive & BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP(countryM); } }; Client Side Classes class Student { public: Student(){} virtual ~Student(){} public: std::string id() { return idM; } void id(std::string id) { idM = id; } std::string firstName() { return firstNameM; } void firstName(std::string name) { firstNameM = name; } protected: friend class boost::serialization::access; protected: std::string idM; std::string firstNameM; protected: template<class A> void serialize(A& archive, const unsigned int /*version*/) { archive & BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP(idM); if (version >=1) { archive & BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP(firstNameM); } } }; BOOST_CLASS_VERSION(Student, 1) class InternationalStudent : public Student { public: InternationalStudent() {} ~InternationalStudent() {} public: std::string country() { return countryM; } void country(std::string country) { countryM = country; } protected: friend class boost::serialization::access; protected: std::string countryM; protected: template<class A> void serialize(A& archive, const unsigned int /*version*/) { archive & BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP(boost::serialization::base_object<Student>(*this)); archive & BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP(countryM); } };

  • Need some help deciphering a line of assembler code, from .NET JITted code

    - by Lasse V. Karlsen
    In a C# constructor, that ends up with a call to this(...), the actual call gets translated to this: 0000003d call dword ptr ds:[199B88E8h] What is the DS register contents here? I know it's the data-segment, but is this call through a VMT-table or similar? I doubt it though, since this(...) wouldn't be a call to a virtual method, just another constructor. I ask because the value at that location seems to be bad in some way, if I hit F11, trace into (Visual Studio 2008), on that call-instruction, the program crashes with an access violation. The code is deep inside a 3rd party control library, where, though I have the source code, I don't have the assemblies compiled with enough debug information that I can trace it through C# code, only through the disassembler, and then I have to match that back to the actual code. The C# code in question is this: public AxisRangeData(AxisRange range) : this(range, range.Axis) { } Reflector shows me this IL code: .maxstack 8 L_0000: ldarg.0 L_0001: ldarg.1 L_0002: ldarg.1 L_0003: callvirt instance class DevExpress.XtraCharts.AxisBase DevExpress.XtraCharts.AxisRange::get_Axis() L_0008: call instance void DevExpress.XtraCharts.Native.AxisRangeData::.ctor(class DevExpress.XtraCharts.ChartElement, class DevExpress.XtraCharts.AxisBase) L_000d: ret It's that last call there, to the other constructor of the same class, that fails. The debugger never surfaces inside the other method, it just crashes. The disassembly for the method after JITting is this: 00000000 push ebp 00000001 mov ebp,esp 00000003 sub esp,14h 00000006 mov dword ptr [ebp-4],ecx 00000009 mov dword ptr [ebp-8],edx 0000000c cmp dword ptr ds:[18890E24h],0 00000013 je 0000001A 00000015 call 61843511 0000001a mov eax,dword ptr [ebp-4] 0000001d mov dword ptr [ebp-0Ch],eax 00000020 mov eax,dword ptr [ebp-8] 00000023 mov dword ptr [ebp-10h],eax 00000026 mov ecx,dword ptr [ebp-8] 00000029 cmp dword ptr [ecx],ecx 0000002b call dword ptr ds:[1889D0DCh] // range.Axis 00000031 mov dword ptr [ebp-14h],eax 00000034 push dword ptr [ebp-14h] 00000037 mov edx,dword ptr [ebp-10h] 0000003a mov ecx,dword ptr [ebp-0Ch] 0000003d call dword ptr ds:[199B88E8h] // this(range, range.Axis)? 00000043 nop 00000044 mov esp,ebp 00000046 pop ebp 00000047 ret Basically what I'm asking is this: What the purpose of the ds:[ADDR] indirection here? VMT-table is only for virtual isn't it? and this is constructor Could the constructor have yet to be JITted, which could mean that the call would actually call through a JIT shim? I'm afraid I'm in deep water here, so anything might and could help. Edit: Well, the problem just got worse, or better, or whatever. We are developing the .NET feature in a C# project in a Visual Studio 2008 solution, and debugging and developing through Visual Studio. However, in the end, this code will be loaded into a .NET runtime hosted by a Win32 Delphi application. In order to facilitate easy experimentation of such features, we can also configure the Visual Studio project/solution/debugger to copy the produced dll's to the Delphi app's directory, and then execute the Delphi app, through the Visual Studio debugger. Turns out, the problem goes away if I run the program outside of the debugger, but during debugging, it crops up, every time. Not sure that helps, but since the code isn't slated for production release for another 6 months or so, then it takes some of the pressure off of it for the test release that we have soon. I'll dive into the memory parts later, but probably not until over the weekend, and post a followup.

  • Java Refuses to Start - Could not reserve enough space for object heap

    - by Randyaa
    Background We have a pool of aproximately 20 linux blades. Some are running Suse, some are running Redhat. ALL share NAS space which contains the following 3 folders: /NAS/app/java - a symlink that points to an installation of a Java JDK. Currently version 1.5.0_10 /NAS/app/lib - a symlink that points to a version of our application. /NAS/data - directory where our output is written All our machines have 2 processors (hyperthreaded) with 4gb of physical memory and 4gb of swap space. We limit the number of 'jobs' each machine can process at a given time to 6 (this number likely needs to change, but that does not enter into the current problem so please ignore it for the time being). Some of our jobs set a Max Heap size of 512mb, some others reserve a Max Heap size of 2048mb. Again, we realize we could go over our available memory if 6 jobs started on the same machine with the heap size set to 2048, but to our knowledge this has not yet occurred. The Problem Once and a while a Job will fail immediately with the following message: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. We used to chalk this up to too many jobs running at the same time on the same machine. The problem happened infrequently enough (MAYBE once a month) that we'd just restart it and everything would be fine. The problem has recently gotten much worse. All of our jobs which request a max heap size of 2048m fail immediately almost every time and need to get restarted several times before completing. We've gone out to individual machines and tried executing them manually with the same result. Debugging It turns out that the problem only exists for our SuSE boxes. The reason it has been happening more frequently is becuase we've been adding more machines, and the new ones are SuSE. 'cat /proc/version' on the SuSE boxes give us: Linux version 2.6.5-7.244-bigsmp (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 3.3.3 (SuSE Linux)) #1 SMP Mon Dec 12 18:32:25 UTC 2005 'cat /proc/version' on the RedHat boxes give us: Linux version 2.4.21-32.0.1.ELsmp ([email protected]) (gcc version 3.2.3 20030502 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.3-52)) #1 SMP Tue May 17 17:52:23 EDT 2005 'uname -a' gives us the following on BOTH types of machines: UTC 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux No jobs are running on the machine, and no other processes are utilizing much memory. All of the processes currently running might be using 100mb total. 'top' currently shows the following: Mem: 4146528k total, 3536360k used, 610168k free, 132136k buffers Swap: 4194288k total, 0k used, 4194288k free, 3283908k cached 'vmstat' currently shows the following: procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- --system-- ----cpu---- r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa 0 0 0 610292 132136 3283908 0 0 0 2 26 15 0 0 100 0 If we kick off a job with the following command line (Max Heap of 1850mb) it starts fine: java/bin/java -Xmx1850M -cp helloworld.jar HelloWorld Hello World If we bump up the max heap size to 1875mb it fails: java/bin/java -Xmx1875M -cp helloworld.jar HelloWorld Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. It's quite clear that the memory currently being used is for Buffering/Caching and that's why so little is being displayed as 'free'. What isn't clear is why there is a magical 1850mb line where anything higher means Java can't start. Any explanations would be greatly appreciated.

  • ASP.net MVC DropLownList db.SaveChanges not saving selection

    - by WMIF
    I have looked through a ton of tutorials and suggestions on how to work with DropDownList in MVC. I was able to get most of it working, but the selected item is not saving into the database. I am using MVC 3 and Razor for the view. My DropDownList is getting created with the correct values and good looking HTML. When I set a breakpoint, I can see the correct selected item ID in the model getting sent to controller. When the view goes back to the index, the DropDownList value is not set. The other values save just fine. Here are the related views. The DropDownList is displaying a list of ColorModel names as text with the ID as the value. public class ItemModel { [Key] public int ItemID { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public string Description { get; set; } public virtual ColorModel Color { get; set; } } public class ItemEditViewModel { public int ItemID { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public string Description { get; set; } public int ColorID { get; set; } public IEnumerable<SelectListItem> Colors { get; set; } } public class ColorModel { [Key] public int ColorID { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public virtual IList<ItemModel> Items { get; set; } } Here are the controller actions. public ActionResult Edit(int id) { ItemModel itemmodel = db.Items.Find(id); ItemEditViewModel itemEditModel; itemEditModel = new ItemEditViewModel(); itemEditModel.ItemID = itemmodel.ItemID; if (itemmodel.Color != null) { itemEditModel.ColorID = itemmodel.Color.ColorID; } itemEditModel.Description = itemmodel.Description; itemEditModel.Name = itemmodel.Name; itemEditModel.Colors = db.Colors .ToList() .Select(x => new SelectListItem { Text = x.Name, Value = x.ColorID.ToString() }); return View(itemEditModel); } [HttpPost] public ActionResult Edit(ItemEditViewModel itemEditModel) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { ItemModel itemmodel; itemmodel = new ItemModel(); itemmodel.ItemID = itemEditModel.ItemID; itemmodel.Color = db.Colors.Find(itemEditModel.ColorID); itemmodel.Description = itemEditModel.Description; itemmodel.Name = itemEditModel.Name; db.Entry(itemmodel).State = EntityState.Modified; db.SaveChanges(); return RedirectToAction("Index"); } return View(itemEditModel); } The view has this for the DropDownList, and the others are just EditorFor(). @Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.ColorID, Model.Colors, "Select a Color") When I set the breakpoint on the db.Color.Find(...) line, I show this in the Locals window for itemmodel.Color: {System.Data.Entity.DynamicProxies.ColorModel_0EB80C07207CA5D88E1A745B3B1293D3142FE2E644A1A5202B90E5D2DAF7C2BB} When I expand that line, I can see the ColorID that I chose from the dropdown box, but it does not save into the database.

  • Resolving a Forward Declaration Issue Involving a State Machine in C++

    - by hypersonicninja
    I've recently returned to C++ development after a hiatus, and have a question regarding implementation of the State Design Pattern. I'm using the vanilla pattern, exactly as per the GoF book. My problem is that the state machine itself is based on some hardware used as part of an embedded system - so the design is fixed and can't be changed. This results in a circular dependency between two of the states (in particular), and I'm trying to resolve this. Here's the simplified code (note that I tried to resolve this by using headers as usual but still had problems - I've omitted them in this code snippet): #include <iostream> #include <memory> using namespace std; class Context { public: friend class State; Context() { } private: State* m_state; }; class State { public: State() { } virtual void Trigger1() = 0; virtual void Trigger2() = 0; }; class LLT : public State { public: LLT() { } void Trigger1() { new DH(); } void Trigger2() { new DL(); } }; class ALL : public State { public: ALL() { } void Trigger1() { new LLT(); } void Trigger2() { new DH(); } }; // DL needs to 'know' about DH. class DL : public State { public: DL() { } void Trigger1() { new ALL(); } void Trigger2() { new DH(); } }; class HLT : public State { public: HLT() { } void Trigger1() { new DH(); } void Trigger2() { new DL(); } }; class AHL : public State { public: AHL() { } void Trigger1() { new DH(); } void Trigger2() { new HLT(); } }; // DH needs to 'know' about DL. class DH : public State { public: DH () { } void Trigger1() { new AHL(); } void Trigger2() { new DL(); } }; int main() { auto_ptr<LLT> llt (new LLT); auto_ptr<ALL> all (new ALL); auto_ptr<DL> dl (new DL); auto_ptr<HLT> hlt (new HLT); auto_ptr<AHL> ahl (new AHL); auto_ptr<DH> dh (new DH); return 0; } The problem is basically that in the State Pattern, state transitions are made by invoking the the ChangeState method in the Context class, which invokes the constructor of the next state. Because of the circular dependency, I can't invoke the constructor because it's not possible to pre-define both of the constructors of the 'problem' states. I had a look at this article, and the template method which seemed to be the ideal solution - but it doesn't compile and my knowledge of templates is a rather limited... The other idea I had is to try and introduce a Helper class to the subclassed states, via multiple inheritance, to see if it's possible to specify the base class's constructor and have a reference to the state subclasse's constructor. But I think that was rather ambitious... Finally, would a direct implmentation of the Factory Method Design Pattern be the best way to resolve the entire problem?

  • Type for use in template object to compare double values

    - by DaClown
    I got this n-dimensional point object: template <class T, unsigned int dimension> class Obj { protected: T coords[dimension]; static const unsigned int size = dimension; public: Obj() { }; Obj(T def) { for (unsigned int i = 0; i < size; ++i) coords[i]=def; }; Obj(const Obj& o) { for (unsigned int i = 0; i < size; ++i) coords[i] = o.coords[i]; } const Obj& operator= (const Obj& rhs) { if (this != &rhs) for (unsigned int i = 0; i < size; ++i) coords[i] = rhs.coords[i]; return *this; } virtual ~Obj() { }; T get (unsigned int id) { if (id >= size) throw std::out_of_range("out of range"); return coords[id]; } void set (unsigned int id, T t) { if (id >= size) throw std::out_of_range("out of range"); coords[id] = t; } }; and a 3D point class which uses Obj as base class: template <class U> class Point3DBase : public Obj<U,3> { typedef U type; public: U &x, &y, &z; public: Point3DBase() : x(Obj<U,3>::coords[0]), y(Obj<U,3>::coords[1]), z(Obj<U,3>::coords[2]) { }; Point3DBase(U def) : Obj<U,3>(def), x(Obj<U,3>::coords[0]), y(Obj<U,3>::coords[1]), z(Obj<U,3>::coords[2]) { }; Point3DBase(U x_, U y_, U z_) : x(Obj<U,3>::coords[0]), y(Obj<U,3>::coords[1]), z(Obj<U,3>::coords[2]) { x = x_; y = y_; z= z_; }; Point3DBase(const Point3DBase& other) : x(Obj<U,3>::coords[0]), y(Obj<U,3>::coords[1]), z(Obj<U,3>::coords[2]) { x = other.x; y = other.y; z = other.z; } // several operators ... }; The operators, basically the ones for comparison, use the simple compare-the-member-object approach like: virtual friend bool operator== (const Point3DBase<U> &lhs, const Point3DBase<U> rhs) { return (lhs.x == rhs.x && lhs.y == rhs.y && lhs.z == rhs.z); } Then it occured to me that for the comparion of double values the simply equality approach is not very useful since double values should be compared with an error margin. What would be the best approach to introduce an error margin into the point? I thought about an epsDouble type as template parameter but I can't figure out how to achieve this.

  • Having trouble storing a CRTP based class in a vector

    - by user366834
    Hi, Im not sure if this can be done, im just delving into templates so perhaps my understanding is a bit wrong. I have a Platoon of soldiers, the platoon inherits from a formation to pick up the formations properties, but because i could have as many formations as i can think of I chose to use the CRTP to create the formations, hoping that i could make a vector or array of Platoon to store the platoons in. but, of course, when i make a Platoon, it wont store it in the vector, "types are unrelated" Is there any way around this ? i read about "Veneers" which are similar and that they work with arrays but i cant get it to work, perhaps im missing something. here's some code: (sorry about the formatting, the code is here in my post but its not showing up for some reason ) template < class TBase > class IFormation { public : ~IFormation(){} bool IsFull() { return m_uiMaxMembers == m_uiCurrentMemCount; } protected: unsigned int m_uiCurrentMemCount; unsigned int m_uiMaxMembers; IFormation( unsigned int _uiMaxMembers ): m_uiMaxMembers( _uiMaxMembers ), m_uiCurrentMemCount( 0 ){} // only allow use as a base class. void SetupFormation( std::vector<MySoldier*>& _soldierList ){}; // must be implemented in derived class }; ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// // PHALANX FORMATION class Phalanx : public IFormation<Phalanx> { public: Phalanx( ): IFormation( 12 ), m_fDistance( 4.0f ) {} ~Phalanx(){} protected: float m_fDistance; // the distance between soldiers void SetupFormation( std::vector<MySoldier*>& _soldierList ); }; /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// // COLUMN FORMATINO class Column : public IFormation< Column > { public : Column( int _numOfMembers ): IFormation( _numOfMembers ) {} ~Column(); protected: void SetupFormation( std::vector<MySoldier*>& _soldierList ); }; I then use these formations in the platoon class to derive, so that platoon gets the relevant SetupFormation() function: template < class Formation > class Platoon : public Formation { public: **** platoon code here }; everything works great and as expected up until this point. now, as my general can have multiple platoons, I need to store the platoons. typedef Platoon< IFormation<> > TPlatoon; // FAIL typedef std::vector<TPlatoon*> TPlatoons; TPlatoon m_pPlatoons m_pPlatoons.push_back( new Platoon<Phalanx> ); // FAIL, types unrelated. typedef Platoon< IFormation< TPlatoon; fails because i need to specify a template parameter, yet specifying this will only allow me to store platoons created with the same template parameter. so i then created FormationBase class FormationBase { public: virtual bool IsFull() = 0; virtual void SetupFormation( std::vector<MySoldier*>& _soldierList ) = 0; }; and made IFormation publicly inherit from that, and then changed the typedef to typedef Platoon< IFormation< FormationBase > > TPlatoon; but still no love. now in my searches i have not found info that says this is possible - or not possible.

  • Help to argue why to develop software on a physical computer rather than via a remote desktop

    - by s5804
    Remote desktops are great and many times a blessing and cost effective (instead of leasing expensive cables). I am not arguing against remote desktops, just if one have the alternative to use either remote desktop or physical computer, I would choose the later. Also note that I am not arguing for or against remote work practices. But in my case I am required to be physically present in the office when developing software. Background, I work in a company which main business is not to develop software. Therefore the company IT policies are mainly focused on security and to efficiently deploying/maintaing thousands of computer to users. Further, the typical employee runs typical Office applications, like a word processors. Because safety/stability is such a big priority, every non production system/application, shall be deployed into a physical different network, called the test network. Software development of course also belongs in the test network. To access the test network the company has created a standard policy, which dictates that access to the test network shall go only via a remote desktop client. Practically from ones production computer one would open up a remote desktop client to a virtual computer located in the test network. On the virtual computer's remote desktop one would be able to access/run/install all development tools, like Eclipse IDE. Another solution would be to have a dedicated physical computer, which is physically only connected to the test network. Both solutions are available in the company. I have tested both approaches and found running Eclipse IDE, SQL developer, in the remote desktop client to be sluggish (keyboard strokes are delayed), commands like alt-tab takes me out of the remote client, enjoying... Further, screen resolution and colors are different, just to mention a few. Therefore there is nothing technical wrong with the remote client, just not optimal and frankly de-motivating. Now with the new policies put in place, plans are to remove the physical computers connected to the test network. I am looking for help to argue for why software developers shall have a dedicated physical software development computer, to be productive and cost effective. Remember that we are physically in office. Further one can notice that we are talking about approx. 50 computers out of 2000 employees. Therefore the extra budget is relatively small. This is more about policy than cost. Please note that there are lots of similar setups in other companies that work great due to a perfectly tuned systems. However, in my case it is sluggish and it would cost more money to trouble shoot the performance and fine tune it rather than to have a few physical computers. As a business case we have argued that productivity will go down by 25%, however it's my feeling that the reality is probably closer to 50%. This business case isn't really accepted and I find it very difficult to defend it to managers that has never ever used a rich IDE in their life, never mind developed software. Further the test network and remote client has no guaranteed service level, therefore it is down for a few hours per month with the lowest priority on the fix list. Help is appreciated.

  • C++ templated factory constructor/de-serialization

    - by KRao
    Hi, I was looking at the boost serialization library, and the intrusive way to provide support for serialization is to define a member function with signature (simplifying): class ToBeSerialized { public: //Define this to support serialization //Notice not virtual function! template<class Archive> void serialize(Archive & ar) {.....} }; Moreover, one way to support serilization of derived class trough base pointers is to use a macro of the type: //No mention to the base class(es) from which Derived_class inherits BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_GUID(Derived_class, "derived_class") where Derived_class is some class which is inheriting from a base class, say Base_class. Thanks to this macro, it is possible to serialize classes of type Derived_class through pointers to Base_class correctly. The question is: I am used in C++ to write abstract factories implemented through a map from std::string to (pointer to) functions which return objects of the desired type (and eveything is fine thanks to covariant types). Hover I fail to see how I could use the above non-virtual serialize template member function to properly de-serialize (i.e. construct) an object without knowing its type (but assuming that the type information has been stored by the serializer, say in a string). What I would like to do (keeping the same nomenclature as above) is something like the following: XmlArchive xmlArchive; //A type or archive xmlArchive.open("C:/ser.txt"); //Contains type information for the serialized class Base_class* basePtr = Factory<Base_class>::create("derived_class",xmlArchive); with the function on the righ-hand side creating an object on the heap of type Derived_class (via default constructor, this is the part I know how to solve) and calling the serialize function of xmlArchive (here I am stuck!), i.e. do something like: Base_class* Factory<Base_class>::create("derived_class",xmlArchive) { Base_class* basePtr = new Base_class; //OK, doable, usual map string to pointer to function static_cast<Derived_class*>( basePtr )->serialize( xmlArchive ); //De-serialization, how????? return basePtr; } I am sure this can be done (boost serialize does it but its code is impenetrable! :P), but I fail to figure out how. The key problem is that the serialize function is a template function. So I cannot have a pointer to a generic templated function. As the point in writing the templated serialize function is to make the code generic (i.e. not having to re-write the serialize function for different Archivers), it does not make sense then to have to register all the derived classes for all possible archive types, like: MY_CLASS_REGISTER(Derived_class, XmlArchive); MY_CLASS_REGISTER(Derived_class, TxtArchive); ... In fact in my code I relies on overloading to get the correct behaviour: void serialize( XmlArchive& archive, Derived_class& derived ); void serialize( TxtArchive& archive, Derived_class& derived ); ... The key point to keep in mind is that the archive type is always known, i.e. I am never using runtime polymorphism for the archive class...(again I am using overloading on the archive type). Any suggestion to help me out? Thank you very much in advance! Cheers

  • MVC multi page form losing session

    - by Bryan
    I have a multi-page form that's used to collect leads. There are multiple versions of the same form that we call campaigns. Some campaigns are 3 page forms, others are 2 pages, some are 1 page. They all share the same lead model and campaign controller, etc. There is 1 action for controlling the flow of the campaigns, and a separate action for submitting all the lead information into the database. I cannot reproduce this locally, and there are checks in place to ensure users can't skip pages. Session mode is InProc. This runs after every POST action which stores the values in session: protected override void OnActionExecuted(ActionExecutedContext filterContext) { base.OnActionExecuted(filterContext); if (this.Request.RequestType == System.Net.WebRequestMethods.Http.Post && this._Lead != null) ParentStore.Lead = this._Lead; } This is the Lead property within the controller: private Lead _Lead; /// <summary> /// Gets the session stored Lead model. /// </summary> /// <value>The Lead model stored in session.</value> protected Lead Lead { get { if (this._Lead == null) this._Lead = ParentStore.Lead; return this._Lead; } } ParentStore class: public static class ParentStore { internal static Lead Lead { get { return SessionStore.Get<Lead>(Constants.Session.Lead, new Lead()); } set { SessionStore.Set(Constants.Session.Lead, value); } } Campaign POST action: [HttpPost] public virtual ActionResult Campaign(Lead lead, string campaign, int page) { if (this.Session.IsNewSession) return RedirectToAction("Campaign", new { campaign = campaign, page = 0 }); if (ModelState.IsValid == false) return View(GetCampaignView(campaign, page), this.Lead); TrackLead(this.Lead, campaign, page, LeadType.Shared); return RedirectToAction("Campaign", new { campaign = campaign, page = ++page }); } The problem is occuring between the above action, and before the following Submit action executes: [HttpPost] public virtual ActionResult Submit(Lead lead, string campaign, int page) { if (this.Session.IsNewSession || this.Lead.Submitted || !this.LeadExists) return RedirectToAction("Campaign", new { campaign = campaign, page = 0 }); lead.AddCustomQuestions(); MergeLead(campaign, lead, this.AdditionalQuestionsType, false); if (ModelState.IsValid == false) return View(GetCampaignView(campaign, page), this.Lead); var sharedLead = this.Lead.ToSharedLead(Request.Form.ToQueryString(false)); //Error occurs here and sends me an email with whatever values are in the form collection. EAUtility.ProcessLeadProxy.SubmitSharedLead(sharedLead); this.Lead.Submitted = true; VisitorTracker.DisplayConfirmationPixel = true; TrackLead(this.Lead, campaign, page, LeadType.Shared); return RedirectToAction(this.ConfirmationView); } Every visitor to our site gets a unique GUID visitorID. But when these error occurs there is a different visitorID between the Campaign POST and the Submit POST. Because we track each form submission via the TrackLead() method during campaign and submit actions I can see session is being lost between calls, despite the OnActionExecuted firing after every POST and storing the form in session. So when there are errors, we get half the form under one visitorID and the remainder of the form under a different visitorID. Luckily we use a third party service which sends an API call every time a form value changes which uses it's own ID. These IDs are consistent between the first half of the form, and the remainder of the form, and the only way I can save the leads from the lost session issues. I should also note that this works fine 99% of the time. EDIT: I've modified my code to explicitly store my lead object in TempData and used the TempData.Keep() method to persist the object between subsequent requests. I've only deployed this behavior to 1 of my 3 sites but so far so good. I had also tried storing my lead objects in Session directly in the controller action i.e., Session.Add("lead", this._Lead); which uses HTTPSessionStateBase, attempting to circumvent the wrapper class, instead of HttpContext.Current.Session which uses HTTPSessionState. This modification made no difference on the issue, as expected.

  • How to Correct & Improve the Design of this Code?

    - by DaveDev
    HI Guys, I've been working on a little experiement to see if I could create a helper method to serialize any of my types to any type of HTML tag I specify. I'm getting a NullReferenceException when _writer = _viewContext.Writer; is called in protected virtual void Dispose(bool disposing) {/*...*/} I think I'm at a point where it almost works (I've gotten other implementations to work) and I was wondering if somebody could point out what I'm doing wrong? Also, I'd be interested in hearing suggestions on how I could improve the design? So basically, I have this code that will generate a Select box with a number of options: // the idea is I can use one method to create any complete tag of any type // and put whatever I want in the content area <% using (Html.GenerateTag<SelectTag>(Model, new { href = Url.Action("ActionName") })) { %> <%foreach (var fund in Model.Funds) {%> <% using (Html.GenerateTag<OptionTag>(fund)) { %> <%= fund.Name %> <% } %> <% } %> <% } %> This Html.GenerateTag helper is defined as: public static MMTag GenerateTag<T>(this HtmlHelper htmlHelper, object elementData, object attributes) where T : MMTag { return (T)Activator.CreateInstance(typeof(T), htmlHelper.ViewContext, elementData, attributes); } Depending on the type of T it'll create one of the types defined below, public class HtmlTypeBase : MMTag { public HtmlTypeBase() { } public HtmlTypeBase(ViewContext viewContext, params object[] elementData) { base._viewContext = viewContext; base.MergeDataToTag(viewContext, elementData); } } public class SelectTag : HtmlTypeBase { public SelectTag(ViewContext viewContext, params object[] elementData) { base._tag = new TagBuilder("select"); //base.MergeDataToTag(viewContext, elementData); } } public class OptionTag : HtmlTypeBase { public OptionTag(ViewContext viewContext, params object[] elementData) { base._tag = new TagBuilder("option"); //base.MergeDataToTag(viewContext, _elementData); } } public class AnchorTag : HtmlTypeBase { public AnchorTag(ViewContext viewContext, params object[] elementData) { base._tag = new TagBuilder("a"); //base.MergeDataToTag(viewContext, elementData); } } all of these types (anchor, select, option) inherit from HtmlTypeBase, which is intended to perform base.MergeDataToTag(viewContext, elementData);. This doesn't happen though. It works if I uncomment the MergeDataToTag methods in the derived classes, but I don't want to repeat that same code for every derived class I create. This is the definition for MMTag: public class MMTag : IDisposable { internal bool _disposed; internal ViewContext _viewContext; internal TextWriter _writer; internal TagBuilder _tag; internal object[] _elementData; public MMTag() {} public MMTag(ViewContext viewContext, params object[] elementData) { } public void Dispose() { Dispose(true /* disposing */); GC.SuppressFinalize(this); } protected virtual void Dispose(bool disposing) { if (!_disposed) { _disposed = true; _writer = _viewContext.Writer; _writer.Write(_tag.ToString(TagRenderMode.EndTag)); } } protected void MergeDataToTag(ViewContext viewContext, object[] elementData) { Type elementDataType = elementData[0].GetType(); foreach (PropertyInfo prop in elementDataType.GetProperties()) { if (prop.PropertyType.IsPrimitive || prop.PropertyType == typeof(Decimal) || prop.PropertyType == typeof(String)) { object propValue = prop.GetValue(elementData[0], null); string stringValue = propValue != null ? propValue.ToString() : String.Empty; _tag.Attributes.Add(prop.Name, stringValue); } } var dic = new Dictionary<string, object>(StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase); var attributes = elementData[1]; if (attributes != null) { foreach (PropertyDescriptor descriptor in TypeDescriptor.GetProperties(attributes)) { object value = descriptor.GetValue(attributes); dic.Add(descriptor.Name, value); } } _tag.MergeAttributes<string, object>(dic); _viewContext = viewContext; _viewContext.Writer.Write(_tag.ToString(TagRenderMode.StartTag)); } } Thanks Dave

  • Java JNI leak in c++ process.

    - by user662056
    Hi all.. I am beginner in Java. My problem is: I am calling a Java class's method from c++. For this i am using JNI. Everythings works correct, but i have some memory LEAKS in the process of c++ program... So.. i did simple example.. 1) I create a java machine (jint res = JNI_CreateJavaVM(&jvm, (void**)&env, &vm_args);) 2) then i take a pointer on java class (jclass cls = env-FindClass("test_jni")); 3) after that i create a java class object object, by calling the constructor (testJavaObject = env-NewObject(cls, testConstruct);) AT THIS very moment in the process of c++ program is allocated 10 MB of memory 4) Next i delete the class , the object, and the Java Machine .. AT THIS very moment the 10 MB of memory are not free ................. So below i have a few lines of code c++ program void main() { { //Env JNIEnv *env; // java virtual machine JavaVM *jvm; JavaVMOption* options = new JavaVMOption[1]; //class paths options[0].optionString = "-Djava.class.path=C:/Sun/SDK/jdk/lib;D:/jms_test/java_jni_leak;"; // other options JavaVMInitArgs vm_args; vm_args.version = JNI_VERSION_1_6; vm_args.options = options; vm_args.nOptions = 1; vm_args.ignoreUnrecognized = false; // alloc part of memory (for test) before CreateJavaVM char* testMem0 = new char[1000]; for(int i = 0; i < 1000; ++i) testMem0[i] = 'a'; // create java VM jint res = JNI_CreateJavaVM(&jvm, (void**)&env, &vm_args); // alloc part of memory (for test) after CreateJavaVM char* testMem1 = new char[1000]; for(int i = 0; i < 1000; ++i) testMem1[i] = 'b'; //Creating java virtual machine jclass cls = env->FindClass("test_jni"); // Id of a class constructor jmethodID testConstruct = env->GetMethodID(cls, "<init>", "()V"); // The Java Object // Calling the constructor, is allocated 10 MB of memory in c++ process jobject testJavaObject = env->NewObject(cls, testConstruct); // function DeleteLocalRef, // In this very moment memory not free env->DeleteLocalRef(testJavaObject); env->DeleteLocalRef(cls); // 1!!!!!!!!!!!!! res = jvm->DestroyJavaVM(); delete[] testMem0; delete[] testMem1; // In this very moment memory not free. TO /// } int gg = 0; } java class (it just allocs some memory) import java.util.*; public class test_jni { ArrayList<String> testStringList; test_jni() { System.out.println("start constructor"); testStringList = new ArrayList<String>(); for(int i = 0; i < 1000000; ++i) { // ??????? ?????? testStringList.add("TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEST"); } } } process memory view, after crating javaVM and java object: testMem0 and testMem1 - test memory, that's allocated by c++. ************** testMem0 ************** JNI_CreateJavaVM ************** testMem1 ************** // create java object jobject testJavaObject = env->NewObject(cls, testConstruct); ************** process memory view, after destroy javaVM and delete ref on java object: testMem0 and testMem1 are deleted to; ************** JNI_CreateJavaVM ************** // create java object jobject testJavaObject = env->NewObject(cls, testConstruct); ************** So testMem0 and testMem1 is deleted, But JavaVM and Java object not.... Sow what i do wrong... and how i can free memory in the c++ process program.

  • Why is Java EE 6 better than Spring ?

    - by arungupta
    Java EE 6 was released over 2 years ago and now there are 14 compliant application servers. In all my talks around the world, a question that is frequently asked is Why should I use Java EE 6 instead of Spring ? There are already several blogs covering that topic: Java EE wins over Spring by Bill Burke Why will I use Java EE instead of Spring in new Enterprise Java projects in 2012 ? by Kai Waehner (more discussion on TSS) Spring to Java EE migration (Part 1 and 2, 3 and 4 coming as well) by David Heffelfinger Spring to Java EE - A Migration Experience by Lincoln Baxter Migrating Spring to Java EE 6 by Bert Ertman and Paul Bakker at NLJUG Moving from Spring to Java EE 6 - The Age of Frameworks is Over at TSS Java EE vs Spring Shootout by Rohit Kelapure and Reza Rehman at JavaOne 2011 Java EE 6 and the Ewoks by Murat Yener Definite excuse to avoid Spring forever - Bert Ertman and Arun Gupta I will try to share my perspective in this blog. First of all, I'd like to start with a note: Thank you Spring framework for filling the interim gap and providing functionality that is now included in the mainstream Java EE 6 application servers. The Java EE platform has evolved over the years learning from frameworks like Spring and provides all the functionality to build an enterprise application. Thank you very much Spring framework! While Spring was revolutionary in its time and is still very popular and quite main stream in the same way Struts was circa 2003, it really is last generation's framework - some people are even calling it legacy. However my theory is "code is king". So my approach is to build/take a simple Hello World CRUD application in Java EE 6 and Spring and compare the deployable artifacts. I started looking at the official tutorial Developing a Spring Framework MVC Application Step-by-Step but it is using the older version 2.5. I wasn't able to find any updated version in the current 3.1 release. Next, I downloaded Spring Tool Suite and thought that would provide some template samples to get started. A least a quick search did not show any handy tutorials - either video or text-based. So I searched and found a link to their SVN repository at src.springframework.org/svn/spring-samples/. I tried the "mvc-basic" sample and the generated WAR file was 4.43 MB. While it was named a "basic" sample it seemed to come with 19 different libraries bundled but it was what I could find: ./WEB-INF/lib/aopalliance-1.0.jar./WEB-INF/lib/hibernate-validator-4.1.0.Final.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jcl-over-slf4j-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/joda-time-1.6.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/joda-time-jsptags-1.0.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jstl-1.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/log4j-1.2.16.jar./WEB-INF/lib/slf4j-api-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/slf4j-log4j12-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-aop-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-asm-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-beans-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-context-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-context-support-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-core-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-expression-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-web-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-webmvc-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/validation-api-1.0.0.GA.jar And it is not even using any database! The app deployed fine on GlassFish 3.1.2 but the "@Controller Example" link did not work as it was missing the context root. With a bit of tweaking I could deploy the application and assume that the account got created because no error was displayed in the browser or server log. Next I generated the WAR for "mvc-ajax" and the 5.1 MB WAR had 20 JARs (1 removed, 2 added): ./WEB-INF/lib/aopalliance-1.0.jar./WEB-INF/lib/hibernate-validator-4.1.0.Final.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jackson-core-asl-1.6.4.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jackson-mapper-asl-1.6.4.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jcl-over-slf4j-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/joda-time-1.6.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jstl-1.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/log4j-1.2.16.jar./WEB-INF/lib/slf4j-api-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/slf4j-log4j12-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-aop-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-asm-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-beans-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-context-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-context-support-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-core-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-expression-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-web-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-webmvc-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/validation-api-1.0.0.GA.jar 2 more JARs for just doing Ajax. Anyway, deploying this application gave the following error: Caused by: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.codehaus.jackson.map.SerializationConfig.<init>(Lorg/codehaus/jackson/map/ClassIntrospector;Lorg/codehaus/jackson/map/AnnotationIntrospector;Lorg/codehaus/jackson/map/introspect/VisibilityChecker;Lorg/codehaus/jackson/map/jsontype/SubtypeResolver;)V    at org.springframework.samples.mvc.ajax.json.ConversionServiceAwareObjectMapper.<init>(ConversionServiceAwareObjectMapper.java:20)    at org.springframework.samples.mvc.ajax.json.JacksonConversionServiceConfigurer.postProcessAfterInitialization(JacksonConversionServiceConfigurer.java:40)    at org.springframework.beans.factory.support.AbstractAutowireCapableBeanFactory.applyBeanPostProcessorsAfterInitialization(AbstractAutowireCapableBeanFactory.java:407) Seems like some incorrect repos in the "pom.xml". Next one is "mvc-showcase" and the 6.49 MB WAR now has 28 JARs as shown below: ./WEB-INF/lib/aopalliance-1.0.jar./WEB-INF/lib/aspectjrt-1.6.10.jar./WEB-INF/lib/commons-fileupload-1.2.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/commons-io-2.0.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/el-api-2.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/hibernate-validator-4.1.0.Final.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jackson-core-asl-1.8.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jackson-mapper-asl-1.8.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/javax.inject-1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jcl-over-slf4j-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jdom-1.0.jar./WEB-INF/lib/joda-time-1.6.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jstl-api-1.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jstl-impl-1.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/log4j-1.2.16.jar./WEB-INF/lib/rome-1.0.0.jar./WEB-INF/lib/slf4j-api-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/slf4j-log4j12-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-aop-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-asm-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-beans-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-context-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-context-support-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-core-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-expression-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-web-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-webmvc-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/validation-api-1.0.0.GA.jar The app at least deployed and showed results this time. But still no database! Next I tried building "jpetstore" and got the error: [ERROR] Failed to execute goal on project org.springframework.samples.jpetstore:Could not resolve dependencies for project org.springframework.samples:org.springframework.samples.jpetstore:war:1.0.0-SNAPSHOT: Failed to collect dependencies for [commons-fileupload:commons-fileupload:jar:1.2.1 (compile), org.apache.struts:com.springsource.org.apache.struts:jar:1.2.9 (compile), javax.xml.rpc:com.springsource.javax.xml.rpc:jar:1.1.0 (compile), org.apache.commons:com.springsource.org.apache.commons.dbcp:jar:1.2.2.osgi (compile), commons-io:commons-io:jar:1.3.2 (compile), hsqldb:hsqldb:jar:1.8.0.7 (compile), org.apache.tiles:tiles-core:jar:2.2.0 (compile), org.apache.tiles:tiles-jsp:jar:2.2.0 (compile), org.tuckey:urlrewritefilter:jar:3.1.0 (compile), org.springframework:spring-webmvc:jar:3.0.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT (compile), org.springframework:spring-orm:jar:3.0.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT (compile), org.springframework:spring-context-support:jar:3.0.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT (compile), org.springframework.webflow:spring-js:jar:2.0.7.RELEASE (compile), org.apache.ibatis:com.springsource.com.ibatis:jar:2.3.4.726 (runtime), com.caucho:com.springsource.com.caucho:jar:3.2.1 (compile), org.apache.axis:com.springsource.org.apache.axis:jar:1.4.0 (compile), javax.wsdl:com.springsource.javax.wsdl:jar:1.6.1 (compile), javax.servlet:jstl:jar:1.2 (runtime), org.aspectj:aspectjweaver:jar:1.6.5 (compile), javax.servlet:servlet-api:jar:2.5 (provided), javax.servlet.jsp:jsp-api:jar:2.1 (provided), junit:junit:jar:4.6 (test)]: Failed to read artifact descriptor for org.springframework:spring-webmvc:jar:3.0.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT: Could not transfer artifact org.springframework:spring-webmvc:pom:3.0.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT from/to JBoss repository (http://repository.jboss.com/maven2): Access denied to: http://repository.jboss.com/maven2/org/springframework/spring-webmvc/3.0.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT/spring-webmvc-3.0.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT.pom It appears the sample is broken - maybe I was pulling from the wrong repository - would be great if someone were to point me at a good target to use here. With a 50% hit on samples in this repository, I started searching through numerous blogs, most of which have either outdated information (using XML-heavy Spring 2.5), some piece of configuration (which is a typical "feature" of Spring) is missing, or too much complexity in the sample. I finally found this blog that worked like a charm. This blog creates a trivial Spring MVC 3 application using Hibernate and MySQL. This application performs CRUD operations on a single table in a database using typical Spring technologies.  I downloaded the sample code from the blog, deployed it on GlassFish 3.1.2 and could CRUD the "person" entity. The source code for this application can be downloaded here. More details on the application statistics below. And then I built a similar CRUD application in Java EE 6 using NetBeans wizards in a couple of minutes. The source code for the application can be downloaded here and the WAR here. The Spring Source Tool Suite may also offer similar wizard-driven capabilities but this blog focus primarily on comparing the runtimes. The lack of STS tutorials was slightly disappointing as well. NetBeans however has tons of text-based and video tutorials and tons of material even by the community. One more bit on the download size of tools bundle ... NetBeans 7.1.1 "All" is 211 MB (which includes GlassFish and Tomcat) Spring Tool Suite  2.9.0 is 347 MB (~ 65% bigger) This blog is not about the tooling comparison so back to the Java EE 6 version of the application .... In order to run the Java EE version on GlassFish, copy the MySQL Connector/J to glassfish3/glassfish/domains/domain1/lib/ext directory and create a JDBC connection pool and JDBC resource as: ./bin/asadmin create-jdbc-connection-pool --datasourceclassname \\ com.mysql.jdbc.jdbc2.optional.MysqlDataSource --restype \\ javax.sql.DataSource --property \\ portNumber=3306:user=mysql:password=mysql:databaseName=mydatabase \\ myConnectionPool ./bin/asadmin create-jdbc-resource --connectionpoolid myConnectionPool jdbc/myDataSource I generated WARs for the two projects and the table below highlights some differences between them: Java EE 6 Spring WAR File Size 0.021030 MB 10.87 MB (~516x) Number of files 20 53 (> 2.5x) Bundled libraries 0 36 Total size of libraries 0 12.1 MB XML files 3 5 LoC in XML files 50 (11 + 15 + 24) 129 (27 + 46 + 16 + 11 + 19) (~ 2.5x) Total .properties files 1 Bundle.properties 2 spring.properties, log4j.properties Cold Deploy 5,339 ms 11,724 ms Second Deploy 481 ms 6,261 ms Third Deploy 528 ms 5,484 ms Fourth Deploy 484 ms 5,576 ms Runtime memory ~73 MB ~101 MB Some points worth highlighting from the table ... 516x WAR file, 10x deployment time - With 12.1 MB of libraries (for a very basic application) bundled in your application, the WAR file size and the deployment time will naturally go higher. The WAR file for Spring-based application is 516x bigger and the deployment time is double during the first deployment and ~ 10x during subsequent deployments. The Java EE 6 application is fully portable and will run on any Java EE 6 compliant application server. 36 libraries in the WAR - There are 14 Java EE 6 compliant application servers today. Each of those servers provide all the functionality like transactions, dependency injection, security, persistence, etc typically required of an enterprise or web application. There is no need to bundle 36 libraries worth 12.1 MB for a trivial CRUD application. These 14 compliant application servers provide all the functionality baked in. Now you can also deploy these libraries in the container but then you don't get the "portability" offered by Spring in that case. Does your typical Spring deployment actually do that ? 3x LoC in XML - The number of XML files is about 1.6x and the LoC is ~ 2.5x. So much XML seems circa 2003 when the Java language had no annotations. The XML files can be further reduced, e.g. faces-config.xml can be replaced without providing i18n, but I just want to compare stock applications. Memory usage - Both the applications were deployed on default GlassFish 3.1.2 installation and any additional memory consumed as part of deployment/access was attributed to the application. This is by no means scientific but at least provides an initial ballpark. This area definitely needs more investigation. Another table that compares typical Java EE 6 compliant application servers and the custom-stack created for a Spring application ... Java EE 6 Spring Web Container ? 53 MB (tcServer 2.6.3 Developer Edition) Security ? 12 MB (Spring Security 3.1.0) Persistence ? 6.3 MB (Hibernate 4.1.0, required) Dependency Injection ? 5.3 MB (Framework) Web Services ? 796 KB (Spring WS 2.0.4) Messaging ? 3.4 MB (RabbitMQ Server 2.7.1) 936 KB (Java client 936) OSGi ? 1.3 MB (Spring OSGi 1.2.1) GlassFish and WebLogic (starting at 33 MB) 83.3 MB There are differentiating factors on both the stacks. But most of the functionality like security, persistence, and dependency injection is baked in a Java EE 6 compliant application server but needs to be individually managed and patched for a Spring application. This very quickly leads to a "stack explosion". The Java EE 6 servers are tested extensively on a variety of platforms in different combinations whereas a Spring application developer is responsible for testing with different JDKs, Operating Systems, Versions, Patches, etc. Oracle has both the leading OSS lightweight server with GlassFish and the leading enterprise Java server with WebLogic Server, both Java EE 6 and both with lightweight deployment options. The Web Container offered as part of a Java EE 6 application server not only deploys your enterprise Java applications but also provide operational management, diagnostics, and mission-critical capabilities required by your applications. The Java EE 6 platform also introduced the Web Profile which is a subset of the specifications from the entire platform. It is targeted at developers of modern web applications offering a reasonably complete stack, composed of standard APIs, and is capable out-of-the-box of addressing the needs of a large class of Web applications. As your applications grow, the stack can grow to the full Java EE 6 platform. The GlassFish Server Web Profile starting at 33MB (smaller than just the non-standard tcServer) provides most of the functionality typically required by a web application. WebLogic provides battle-tested functionality for a high throughput, low latency, and enterprise grade web application. No individual managing or patching, all tested and commercially supported for you! Note that VMWare does have a server, tcServer, but it is non-standard and not even certified to the level of the standard Web Profile most customers expect these days. Customers who choose this risk proprietary lock-in since VMWare does not seem to want to formally certify with either Java EE 6 Enterprise Platform or with Java EE 6 Web Profile but of course it would be great if they were to join the community and help their customers reduce the risk of deploying on VMWare software. Some more points to help you decide choose between Java EE 6 and Spring ... Freedom to choose container - There are 14 Java EE 6 compliant application servers today, with a variety of open source and commercial offerings. A Java EE 6 application can be deployed on any of those containers. So if you deployed your application on GlassFish today and would like to scale up with your demands then you can deploy the same application to WebLogic. And because of the portability of a Java EE 6 application, you can even take it a different vendor altogether. Spring requires a runtime which could be any of these app servers as well. But why use Spring when all the required functionality is already baked into the application server itself ? Spring also has a different definition of portability where they claim to bundle all the libraries in the WAR file and move to any application server. But we saw earlier how bloated that archive could be. The equivalent features in Spring runtime offerings (mainly tcServer) are not all open source, not as mature, and often require manual assembly.  Vendor choice - The Java EE 6 platform is created using the Java Community Process where all the big players like Oracle, IBM, RedHat, and Apache are conritbuting to make the platform successful. Each application server provides the basic Java EE 6 platform compliance and has its own competitive offerings. This allows you to choose an application server for deploying your Java EE 6 applications. If you are not happy with the support or feature of one vendor then you can move your application to a different vendor because of the portability promise offered by the platform. Spring is a set of products from a single company, one price book, one support organization, one sustaining organization, one sales organization, etc. If any of those cause a customer headache, where do you go ? Java EE, backed by multiple vendors, is a safer bet for those that are risk averse. Production support - With Spring, typically you need to get support from two vendors - VMWare and the container provider. With Java EE 6, all of this is typically provided by one vendor. For example, Oracle offers commercial support from systems, operating systems, JDK, application server, and applications on top of them. VMWare certainly offers complete production support but do you really want to put all your eggs in one basket ? Do you really use tcServer ? ;-) Maintainability - With Spring, you are likely building your own distribution with multiple JAR files, integrating, patching, versioning, etc of all those components. Spring's claim is that multiple JAR files allow you to go à la carte and pick the latest versions of different components. But who is responsible for testing whether all these versions work together ? Yep, you got it, its YOU! If something does not work, who patches and maintains the JARs ? Of course, you! Commercial support for such a configuration ? On your own! The Java EE application servers manage all of this for you and provide a well-tested and commercially supported bundle. While it is always good to realize that there is something new and improved that updates and replaces older frameworks like Spring, the good news is not only does a Java EE 6 container offer what is described here, most also will let you deploy and run your Spring applications on them while you go through an upgrade to a more modern architecture. End result, you get the best of both worlds - keeping your legacy investment but moving to a more agile, lightweight world of Java EE 6. A message to the Spring lovers ... The complexity in J2EE 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4 led to the genesis of Spring but that was in 2004. This is 2012 and the name has changed to "Java EE 6" :-) There are tons of improvements in the Java EE platform to make it easy-to-use and powerful. Some examples: Adding @Stateless on a POJO makes it an EJB EJBs can be packaged in a WAR with no special packaging or deployment descriptors "web.xml" and "faces-config.xml" are optional in most of the common cases Typesafe dependency injection is now part of the Java EE platform Add @Path on a POJO allows you to publish it as a RESTful resource EJBs can be used as backing beans for Facelets-driven JSF pages providing full MVC Java EE 6 WARs are known to be kilobytes in size and deployed in milliseconds Tons of other simplifications in the platform and application servers So if you moved away from J2EE to Spring many years ago and have not looked at Java EE 6 (which has been out since Dec 2009) then you should definitely try it out. Just be at least aware of what other alternatives are available instead of restricting yourself to one stack. Here are some workshops and screencasts worth trying: screencast #37 shows how to build an end-to-end application using NetBeans screencast #36 builds the same application using Eclipse javaee-lab-feb2012.pdf is a 3-4 hours self-paced hands-on workshop that guides you to build a comprehensive Java EE 6 application using NetBeans Each city generally has a "spring cleanup" program every year. It allows you to clean up the mess from your house. For your software projects, you don't need to wait for an annual event, just get started and reduce the technical debt now! Move away from your legacy Spring-based applications to a lighter and more modern approach of building enterprise Java applications using Java EE 6. • An Open Letter from Lyle Ekdahl, Group Vice President and General Manager, Oracle's JD Edwards

    - by Brian Dayton
    From Lyle Ekdahl, Group Vice President and General Manager, Oracle's JD Edwards As you may have heard, we recently announced some changes to the way Oracle will offer licensing of technology products with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne. Specifically, we have withdrawn from new sales the product known as JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Technology Foundation ("Blue Stack"). Our motivation for this change is simply to streamline licensing for our customers. Going forward, customers will license Oracle products from Oracle and IBM products from IBM. Customers who are currently licensed for Technology Foundation will continue to receive support--unchanged--through September 30, 2016. This announcement affects how customers license these IBM products; it does not affect Oracle's certification roadmap for IBM products with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne. Customers who are currently running their JD Edwards EnterpriseOne infrastructure using IBM platform components can continue to do so regardless of whether they license these components via Technology Foundation or directly from IBM. New customers choosing to run JD Edwards EnterpriseOne on IBM technology should license JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Core Tools from Oracle while licensing Infrastructure and any licenses of IBM products from IBM. For more information about this announcement, customers should refer to My Oracle Support article 1232453.1 Questions included in the "Frequently Asked Questions" document on My Oracle Support: Is Oracle dropping support for IBM DB2 and IBM WebSphere with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne? No. This announcement affects how customers license these IBM products; it does not affect Oracle's certification roadmap for these products. The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne matrix of supported databases, web servers, and portals remains unchanged, including planned support for IBM DB2, IBM WebSphere Application Server, and IBM WebSphere Portal. Customers who are currently running their JD Edwards EnterpriseOne infrastructure using IBM platform components can continue to do so regardless of whether they license these components via Technology Foundation or directly from IBM. As always, the timing and versions of such third-party certifications remain at Oracle's discretion. Does this announcement mean that Oracle is withdrawing support for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne on the IBM i platform? Absolutely not. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne support on the IBM i platform remains unchanged. This announcement simply states that customers will acquire Oracle products from Oracle and IBM products from IBM. In fact, as evidenced by the recent "IBM i Solution Edition for JD Edwards" offering, IBM and the JD Edwards product teams continue to innovate and offer attractive, cost-competitive solutions to the ERP marketplace. For more information about this offering see: http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/i/advantages/oracle/. I hope this clarifies any concerns. Let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns. -Lyle

  • Chicago SQL Saturday

    - by Johnm
    This past Saturday, April 17, 2010, I journeyed North to the great city of Chicago for some SQL Server fun, learning and fellowship. The Chicago edition of this grassroots phenomenon was the 31st scheduled SQL Saturday since the program's birth in late 2007. The Chicago SQL Saturday consisted of four tracks with eight sessions each and was a very energetic and fast paced day for the 300+/- SQL Server enthusiasts in attendance. The speaker line up included national notables such as Kevin Kline, Brent Ozar, and Brad McGehee. My hometown of Indianapolis was well represented in the speaker line up with Arie Jones, Aaron King and Derek Comingore. The day began with a very humorous keynote by Kevin Kline and Brent Ozar who emphasized the importance of community events such as SQL Saturday and the monthly user group meetings. They also brilliantly included the impact that getting involved in the SQL community through social media can have on your professional career. My approach to the day was to try to experience as much of the event as I could, so there were very few sessions that I attended for their full duration. I leaped from session to session like a bumble bee, gleaning bits of nectar from each session. Amid these leaps I took the opportunity to briefly chat with some of the in-the-queue speakers as well as other attendees that wondered the hallways. I especially enjoyed a great discussion with Devin Knight about his plans regarding the upcoming Jacksonville SQL Saturday as well as an interesting SQL interpretation of the Iron Chef, which I think would catch on like wild-fire. There were two sessions that stood out as exceptional. So much so that I could not pull myself away: Kevin Kline presented on "SQL Server Internals and Architecture". This session could have been classified as one that is intended for the beginner. Kevin even personally warned me of such as I entered the room. I am a believer in revisiting the basics regardless of the level of your mastery, so I entered into this session in that spirit. It was a very clear and precise presentation. Masterfully illustrated and demonstrated. Brad McGehee presented on "How and When to Use Indexed Views". This was a topic that I was recently exploring and was considering to for use in an integration project. Brad effectively communicated the complexity of this feature and what is involved to gain their full benefit. It was clear at the conclusion of this session that it was not the right feature for my specific needs. Overall, the event was a great success. The use of volunteers, from an attendee's perspective was masterful. The only recommendation that I would have for the next Chicago SQL Saturday would be to include more time in between sessions to permit some level of networking among the attendees, one-on-one questions for speakers and visits to the sponsor booths. Congratulations to Wendy Pastrick, Ted Krueger, and Aaron Lowe for their efforts and a very successful SQL Saturday!

As a matter of fact, Windows consistently ranks as the #1 development platform in our surveys, and now also ranks higher than any Linux distribution as a deployment platform among MySQL Community Edition users.   We've made various technical resources available in our MySQL on Windows Resource Center including articles, whitepapers and archived webinars. MySQL users are also sharing their experiences and writing how-to articles, and it's great to see former MySQL/Sun/Oracle employees still contributing! Thanks Anders for a recent step-by-step part 1 article on working with MySQL on Windows.   We also got feedback from customers wishing to get higher-level information about MySQL on Windows, to help them and others in their organizations better understand:   ·       Why is the world's most popular open source database so popular on Windows?   ·       What are the applications for which one should consider MySQL on Microsoft's platform?   ·       How should Windows shops relying on Microsoft databases get going with MySQL?   Those are the questions we aim to answer in our guide "MySQL on Windows - Why, Where and How", that you can download here.
