• Sort collection of objects in HashMap based on the object's variable

  I have a collection of book objects in a HashMap. The book has book_title, book_author, book_year_published, etc. I want to sort them based on the book_title which is a String, in both ascending and descending order, and display them on the screen.   I have a mailing list application that sends emails through several dedicated SMTP servers (running Linux Debian 5 and Postfix) in the same network of a hosting company. However, the application is using the servers' external IP addresses in order to connect to them over SMTP, and I was wondering what kind of improvement would be obtained if the application used the internal IP addresses of the servers instead?   I have an application that performs a little slow over the internet due to bandwidth reasons. I have enabled GZip which has improved download time by a significant amout, but I was also considering whether or not I could switch from XML to JSON in order to squeeze out that last bit of performance. Would using JSON make the message size significantly smaller, or just somewhat smaller? Let's say we're talking about 250kB of XML data (which compresses to 30kB).

  I've got a number of tasks/servlets that are hitting the HardDeadlineExceededError which is leaving everything hanging in an 'still executing' state. The work being done can easily exceed the 29 second threshold. I try to catch the DeadlineExceededException and base Exception in order to save the exit state but neither of these exception handlers are being caught... Is there a way to determine which tasks are in the queue or currently executing? Are there any other strategies for dealing with this situation?
