• KB2667402 update fails to install with 0x80004005. Yet it's also showing as installed

  I've got 15 Windows 2008 R2 x64 servers that I manage with SCCM2012. I've noticed during my Windows updates reporting that there's two boxes that are showing as 'error' for total updates installed. Digging around, it looks like the update that is failing to install is KB2667402. The Software Centre on the server itself shows the following: The software change returned error code 0x80004005(-2147467259). So SCCM thinks it hasn't installed the update. However, if I go to the Programs and Features application and select 'Windows Updates', I can see an entry for KB2667402: If I try and uninstall this, I get an error: An error occurred. Not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled If I try and download the patch from Microsoft directly, I get the same error installing as displayed in Software Centre. The only odd thing about this setup that I can think would affect this is that I run the RDP service on a non-standard port. However, I do this across all the servers, so it seems odd that it would fail on just 2 out of 15. • Dadaism and Agility

  We all have our little bugbears, and something that has given me particular pause over the years is the place of Agility in the software development life cycle. While I have seen it used successfully on both small and Enterprise-level projects, I have also seen many instances in which long-standing technical debt has also originated under its watch. Ironically the problem in such cases seems to me not that the practitioners in question have failed to follow due process (Test, Develop, Refactor -- a common "what" of Agile), but basically that they have missed the point (the "why" of Agile). It's probably a sign of my age that I'm much more interested in the "why" than the "what", since I feel that the latter falls out naturally from the former, but that this is not a reciprocal relationship.Consider Dadaism, precursor to the Surrealist movement in the early part of the twentieth century. Anyone could stand up and proclaim he or she was Dada; anyone could write cut-ups, or pull words out a hat, or produce gibberish on duelling typewriters under the inspiration of Dada. And all that took place at such performances was a manifestation of Dada, and all the artefacts that resulted were also Dada. Hence one commentator's engimatic observation that 'when one speaks of Dada, then one speaks of Dada. But when one does not speak of Dada, one still speaks of Dada.'What is Dada? Literally, Dada is what you say it is. But that's also missing the point. Dada is about erecting a framework within which utterances like this are valid; Dada is about preparing a stage for itself. Dadaism exemplifies the purity of a process-driven ideology -- in fact an ideology that is almost pure process, with nothing extraneous in the way of formal method, and while perhaps Agile delivery should not embrace the liberties of Dadaism too literally, some of the similarities nevertheless are salutary.Agile -- like Dada -- is an attitude; it is about *being* agile; it is not really about doing a specific set of things that are somehow *part* of being Agile. It is an abstract base rather than an implementation, a characteristic rather than a factor. It is the pragmatic response to the need for change in the face of partial information, ephemeral requirements and a healthy dose of systematic uncertainty. In practice this will usually mean repeatedly making the smallest useful changes to a system, recognising that systems evolve, and that all change carries risk. It will usually mean that instead of investing effort in future-proofing a system against a known technology roadmap, one instead invests one's energies in the daily repetition and incremental development of processes best designed to accommodate change quickly. But though it may mean these things in practice, it isn't actually *about* either of these things; it's about the mindset, the attitude that conceives of such responses as sensible solutions given the larger and ultimately unclassifiable thing that constitutes the development lifecycle of a specific project.

• The Minimalist Approach to Content Governance - Create Phase

   Originally posted by John Brunswick. In this installment of our Minimalist Approach to Content Governance we finally get to the fun part of the content creation process! Once the content requester has addressed the items outlined in the Request Phase it is time to setup and begin the production of content.   For this to be done correctly it is important the the content be assigned appropriate workflow and security information. As in our prior phase, let's take a look at what can be done to streamline this process - as contributors are focused on getting information to their end users as quickly as possible. This often means that details around how to ensure that the materials are properly managed can be overlooked, but fortunately there are some techniques that leverage our content management system's native capabilities to automatically take care of some of the details. 1. Determine Access Why - Even if content is not something that needs to restricted due to security reasons, it is helpful to apply access rights so that the content ends up being visible only to users that it relates to. This will greatly improve user experience. For instance, if your team is working on a group project many of your fellow company employees do not need to see the content that is being worked on for that project. How - Make use of native content features that allow propagation of security and meta data from parent folders within your content system that have been setup for your particular effort. This makes it painless to enforce security, as well as meta data policies for even the most unorganized users. The default settings at a parent level can be set once the content creation request has been accepted and a location in the content management system is assigned for your specific project. Impact - Users can find information will less effort, as they will only be exposed to what they need for their work and can leverage advanced search features to take advantage of meta data assigned to content. The combination of default security and meta data will also help in running reports against the content in the Manage and Retire stages that we will discuss in the next 2 posts. 2. Assign Workflow (optional depending on nature of content) Why - Every case for workflow is going to be a bit different, but it generally involves ensuring that content conforms to management, legal and or editorial requirements. How - Oracle's Universal Content Management offers two ways of helping to workflow content without much effort. Workflow can be applied to content based on Criteria acting on meta data or explicitly assigned to content with a Basic workflow. Impact - Any content that needs additional attention before release is addressed, allowing users to comment and version until a suitable result is reached. By using inheritance from parent folders within the content management system content can automatically be given the right security, meta data and workflow information for a particular project's content. This relieves the burden of doing this for every piece of content from management teams and content contributors. • How do I use C# and ADO.NET to query an Oracle table with a spatial column of type SDO_GEOMETRY?

  My development machine is running Windows 7 Enterprise, 64-bit version. I am using Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate. I am connecting to an Oracle 11g Enterprise server version 11.1.0.7.0. I had a difficult time locating Oracle client software that is made for 64-bit Windows systems and eventually landed here to download what I assume is the proper client connectivity software. I added a reference to "Oracle.DataAccess" which is version 2.111.6.0 (Runtime Version is v2.0.50727). I am targeting .NET CLR version 4.0 since all properties of my VS Solution are defaults and this is 2010 RC. I was then able to write a console application in C# that established connectivity, executed a SELECT statement, and properly returned data when the table in question does NOT contain a spatial column. My problem is that this no longer works when the table I query has a column of type SDO_GEOMETRY in it. Below is the simple console application I am trying to run that reproduces the problem.   Hi! I created a .dll which should work like the RunAs command. The only difference is, that it should read from registry. My problem is, that i need to reed 3 values from the registry, but i can't. It reads the first, than it fails at the second one (Password) with error code 2, which means "The system cannot find the file specified". If i query only for domain and username then it is ok, if i query only for password then it it still succeeds, but if i want to query all three then it fails. Can someone tell me, what i am doing wrong? • How do I get through proxy server environments for non-standard services?

  I'm not real hip on exactly what role(s) today's proxy servers can play and I'm learning so go easy on me :-) I have a client/server system I have written using a homegrown protocol and need to enhance the client side to negotiate its way out of a proxy environment. I have an existing client and server system written in C and C++ for the speed and a small amount of MFC in the client to handle the user interface. I have written both the server and client side of the system on Windows (the people I work for are mainly web developers using Windows everything - not a choice) sticking to Berkeley Sockets as it were via wsock32 for efficiency. The clients connect to the server through a nonstandard port (even though using port 80 is an option to get out of some environments but the protocol that goes over it isn't HTTP). The TCP connection(s) stay open for the duration of the clients participation in real time conferences. Our customer base is expanding to all kinds of networked environments. I have been able to solve a lot of problems by adding the ability to connect securely over port 443 and using secure sockets which allows the protocol to pass through a lot environments since the internal packets can't be sniffed. But more and more of our customers are behind a proxy server environment and my direct connections don't make it through. My old school understanding of proxy servers is that they act as a proxy for external HTML content over HTTP, possibly locally caching popular material for faster local access, and also allowing their IT staff to blacklist certain destination sites. Customer are complaining that my software doesn't recognize and easily navigate its way through their proxy environments but I'm finding it difficult to decide what my "best fit" solution should be. My software doesn't tear down the connection after each client request, and on top of that packets can come from either side at any time, basically your typical custom client/server system for a specific niche. My first reaction is "why can't they just add my servers addresses to their white list" but if there is a programmatic way I can get through without requiring their IT staff to help it is politically better and arguably a better solution anyway. Plus maybe I'm still not understanding the role and purpose of what proxy servers and environments have grown to be these days. My first attempt at a solution was to use WinInet with its various proxy capabilities to establish a connection over port 80 to my non-standard protocol server (which knows enough to recognize and answer a simple HTTP-looking GET request and answer it with a simple HTTP response page to get around some environments that employ initial packet sniffing (DPI)). I retrieved the actual SOCKET handle behind WinInet's HINTERNET request object and had hoped to use that in place of my software's existing SOCKET connection and hopefully not need to change much more on the client side. It initially seemed to be my solution but on further inspection it seems that the OS gets first-chance at the received data on this socket since when I get notified of events via the standard select(...) statement on the socket and query the size of the data available via ioctlsocket the call succeeds but returns 0 bytes available, the reads don't work and it goes downhill from there. Can someone tell me of a client-side library (commercial is fine) will let me get past these proxy server environments with as little user and IT staff help as possible? From what I read it has grown past SOCKS and I figure someone has to have solved this problem before me. Thanks for reading my long-winded question, Ripred

This is my mindset about different interfaces: TV remote is an interface between user and TV. It is an existing entity but useless (doesn't provide any functionality) by itself. All the functionality for each of those buttons on the remote is implemented in the Television set. Interface: It is a "existing entity" layer between the functionality and consumer of that functionality. An, interface by itself is doesn't do anything. It just invokes the functionality lying behind. Now depending on who the user is there are different type of interfaces. Where did languages come in between? anyway, I've downloaded the [PDF] System V Application Binary Interface Edition 4.1 (1997-03-18) to see what exactly it contains. Well, most of it didn't make any sense. Why does it contain 2 chapters (4th & 5th) which describe the ELF file format.Infact, these are the only 2 significant chapters that specification. Rest of all the chapters "Processor Specific". Anyway, I thought that it is completely different topic. Please don't say that ELF file format specs are the ABI. It doesn't qualify to be Interface according to the definition. I know, since we are talking at such low level it must be very specific. But I'm not sure how is it "Instruction Set Architecture(ISA)" specific? Where can I find MS Window's ABI? So, these are the major queries that are bugging me.

• Path Not Found error when opening VB6 project from a shared folder on Virtual PC 2007 (XP sp3)

  I currently work on a small software team that primarily maintains legacy software. I am trying to set up a VirtualPC that we can use to do this maintenance. Specifically, I would like to be able to debug and run VB6 web apps from a folder on the host pc. My constraints are as follows: The VirtualPC will not be registered on the domain. The server that hosts our Subversion repository does not run the subversion service so the only way to interact with the repository is through "file:\\", which requires domain authentication. It is not possible to debug/run VB6 web apps that are located on mapped network drives, because IIS requires that the VirtualPC be on the same domain as the network drive I would like to avoid having to copy the folder from the host pc to the VirtualPC and then copying it back in order to have the latest revision from Subversion So, I am trying to use VirtualPC's shared folder feature to share the host machine's Subversion directory and open the project in VB6 on the VirtualPC. Problem is that Visual Basic throws the error: "Path not found: '\\C:\\Subversion\Path\Project.vbp'" when I try to open it. Folder C:\Subversion on the host machine is mapped to G: on the VirtualPC. If anyone can help me resolve this error or find some other way to accomplish this, I would be deeply grateful. Oh, both host and virtual OS is Windows XP sp3. Using VB 6.0, IIS v5.1. • XNA vs SlimDX for offscreen renderer

  Hello, I realise there are numerous questions on here asking about choosing between XNA and SlimDX, but these all relate to game programming. A little background: I have an application that renders scenes from XML descriptions. Currently I am using WPF 3D and this mostly works, except that WPF has no way to render scenes offscreen (i.e. on a server, without displaying them in a window), and also rendering to a bitmap causes WPF to fallback to software rendering. So I'm faced with having to write my own renderer. Here are the requirements: Mix of 3D and 2D elements. Relatively few elements per scene (tens of meshes, tens of 2D elements). Large scenes (up to 3000px square for print). Only a single frame will be rendered (i.e. FPS is not an issue). Opacity masks. Pixel shaders. Software fallback (servers may or may not have a decent gfx card). Possibility of being rendered offscreen. As you can see it's pretty simple stuff and WPF can manage it quite nicely except for the not-being-able-to-export-the-scene problem. In particular I don't need many of the things usually needed in game development. So bearing that in mind, would you choose XNA or SlimDX? The non-rendering portion of the code is already written in C#, so want to stick with that.

• Can't install plugins in Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo) on Ubuntu

  Eclipse Version 3.5.2 Build id: M20100211-1343 Platform: Ubuntu 10.4 I go to install any new software Eclipse plugins (e.g., pydev, subclipse), and it gets to the 60% mark and stops. I wait for a long while and nothing happens. When I hit "cancel" a security warning comes up "Warning: You are installing software that contains unsigned content.." I click "OK" but it's too late because I've cancelled the installation already. It won't pop up until I hit "cancel". I've tried moving all the windows around, that security warning is not there. In previous incarnations of Eclipse, I've been able to click "OK" on that warning (no canceling) and all is well. I've also tried two JREs (Ubuntu's default openjdk and Sun's JDK 1.6.0_20). Is there some way to get that warning to come up, or even just have it always accept unsigned content? I've downloaded the zip of pydev and unzipped it into ~/.eclipse/org.eclipse.platform_3.5.0_155965261/ and Eclipse doesn't have Pydev when restarted, so manually installing plugins is also a pain. This is not my day. Yes, I see the other questions of this type and they don't seem to answer my problem.

  Currently I have Android SDK 2.1 (+ tools revision 4). I'd like to upgrade to Android SDK 2.2. When I try to do it I'm informed I need to upgrade Android SDK Tools to revision 7 first. So I agree, the process starts and then I get an error: -= warning! =- A folder failed to be renamed or moved. On Windows this typically means that a program Is using that Folder (for example Windows Explorer or your anti-virus software.) Please momentarily deactivate your anti-virus software. Please also close any running programs that may be accessing the directory 'D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\too!s'. When ready, press YES to try again. Downloading Android SDK Tools, revision 7 Installing Android SDK Tools, revision 7 Failed to rename directory D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools to D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\temp\ToolPackage.old01. I am aware of http/https and antivirus issues. So I disactivated my AV. I also closed any application that might hold a handle to the folder. Eclipse is also closed (I start the manager via command line). However I still get the same error. Looks like the only app that can hold a handle to the folder is the manager itself, because its starting directory is the one the error complains about ('\tools'). I am on Win XP Pro + SP3. Does anyone have an idea?

  Hopefully, this fictitious example will illustrate my problem: Suppose you are writing a system which tracks complaints for a software product, as well as many other attributes about the product. In this case the SoftwareProduct is our aggregate root and Complaints are entities that only can exist as a child of the product. In other words, if the software product is removed from the system, so shall the complaints. In the system, there is a dashboard like web page which displays many different aspects of a single SoftwareProduct. One section in the dashboard, displays a list of Complaints in a grid like fashion, showing only some very high level information for each complaint. When an admin type user chooses one of these complaints, they are directed to an edit screen which allows them to edit the detail of a single Complaint. The question is: what is the best way for the edit screen to retrieve the single Complaint, so that it can be displayed for editing purposes? Keep in mind we have already established the SoftwareProduct as an aggregate root, therefore direct access to a Complaint should not be allowed. Also, the system is using NHibernate, so eager loading is an option, but my understanding is that even if a single Complaint is eager loaded via the SoftwareProduct, as soon as the Complaints collection is accessed the rest of the collection is loaded. So, how do you get the single Complaint through the SoftwareProduct without incurring the overhead of loading the entire Complaints collection?

• NAudio demos not working anymore

  I just tried to run the NAudio demos and I'm getting a weird error: System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or a ssembly 'NAudio, Version=1.3.8.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one o f its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect form at. File name: 'NAudio, Version=1.3.8.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' at NAudioWpfDemo.AudioGraph..ctor() at NAudioWpfDemo.ControlPanelViewModel..ctor(IWaveFormRenderer waveFormRender er, SpectrumAnalyser analyzer) in C:\Users\Admin\Downloads\NAudio-1.3\NAudio-1-3 \Source Code\NAudioWpfDemo\ControlPanelViewModel.cs:line 23 at NAudioWpfDemo.MainWindow..ctor() in C:\Users\Admin\Downloads\NAudio-1.3\NA udio-1-3\Source Code\NAudioWpfDemo\MainWindow.xaml.cs:line 15 WRN: Assembly binding logging is turned OFF.
