• Prevent product key from being used on multiple virtual machines

  I have a software product. it will probably run on VMs that have no network connection at all. I want the user to pay for each VM the user runs. I thought to ask the user for some kind of hardware ID and provide him with serial that is unique for his machine. But user can just copy the VM image and than have two machines running? So I thought of having a security dongle. But how can I prevent user from running two VM's on the same machine both connected to the same dongle? This should be only basic defense so that actual hacking will be required to breach the license and not only spinning one more VM.

• how to use unity-scope-sshsearch?

  I used unity-lens-sshsearch on 12.04, 12.10 and 13.04. But after upgrading to 13.10 it's not working any more. (Super+H does nothing) As the lens package is not available on 13.10 I installed unity-scope-sshsearch (successor of the lens?) but do not get any results in the dash for query's like user@host, hostname, 192.168... and so on. My ~/.ssh/config look's like this: Host user@hostname Hostname 192.168.1.1 User user Already tried it with a newly created user, still no results. How is unity-scope-sshsearch intended to work?

• ubuntu 12.04 cannot login

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04. I cannot login. I get to the grub menu and go root, delete my /home/user/.Xauthority file and change my password. I move /home/user/.profile to /home/user/profile, reboot, and I can login (this is fixed by moving .profile to some other name). But if I am idle and Ubuntu displays the screensaver, I cannot login. I have pressed Ctrl+Alt+F1 and removed /home/user/.Xauthority. I check the existence of /home/user/.profile and it does not exist. There is no way for me to login to X from the keyboard connected to the box. I can ssh -CXY to the ubuntu box and login without any problem. Can someone help me fix this problem?

• PC hangs and reboots from time to time

  Hello, I have a very strange problem: Since I have my new PC, I have always had problems with it. From time to time the computer freezes for some seconds and suddendly reboots by itself. I've had this problem since Ubuntu 9.10. The same with 10.04 and 10.10. That's why I don't think it's a software failure because the problem persist too long. It doesn't have anything to do with what I'm doing at this time. Sometimes I listen to music, sometimes I only use Firefox, sometimes I'm running 2 or 3 VMs, sometimes I watch DVD. So it's not isolatable. I could freeze once a day or once a week. I put the PC to the vendor twice(!). The first time they changed my power supply but the problem persisted. The second time they told me that they made some heavy performance tests 50 hours long but they didn't find anything. (How can that be that I have daily freezes with normal usage). The vendor didn't check the hard discs because they used their own disc with Windows. (So they never checked the Linux installation). Yesterday I made some intensive hard disc scans with "SMART" but no errors were found. I ran memtest for 3 times but no errors found. I already had this problem in my old flat, so I doubt that I has something to do with current fluctuation. I already tried another electrical socket and changed to connector strip but the problem persists. At the moment I removed 2 of the RAMs (2x 2GB). In all I have 6GB, 2x2GB and 2x1GB. Could this difference maybe be a problem? Here is a list of my components. I hope that anybody find something I didn't think about yet. The sites that we're hosting are taking a lot time to respond and resolve. top doesn't show anything out of the ordinary and iftop doesn't show a lot of traffic. • Wired connection periodically disconnects requires ipconfig /release and /renew to reconnect

  I just got back into University and after a day of using the internet I suddenly was unable to visit other webpages even though I was still able to chat. I restarted the computer and the internet could no longer visit webpages at all. I got a DNS error from the browser (chrome) and the troubleshooter. The connection comes up as "Network 3" even though It was "Network 2" when it worked. I compared ipconfig /all logs and they seemed identical when it was and was not working. I've found two ways to get internet connection (they no longer work): run ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew several times set a random address and have the troubleshooter fix the new found dhcp problem (before it says dns cannot fix). I checked and it said DHCP was enabled. But either step one or two usually needs to be repeated several times before the network will change back to "network 2" from the defunct "network 3" and after an hour or so I have problems again. I've tried: Uninstalling windows defender and turning off firewall (windows firewall). Updating Qualcomm Ethernet driver - it is up to date. System Restore (problem resurfaces quickly...it's possible this has something to do with windows update?) Flushing dns and setting dns myself (google one and others). Booting in safe mode with networking...didn't fix anything Reinstalling Ethernet Driver Using other ethernet cable, other wall port. I'm out of ideas. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected. By the way, Operating System: Windows 7 - 64 Bit. Have downloaded latest windows updates. Update: And my two fixes don't work any more :( . • What exactly is a Deamon ? ( how to run a root command from apache binded script that uses www-data user )?

  I am trying to run this command from WSGI script service httpd restart The problem is this command can only be run by root and apache uses the www-data user. it has been said the solution is to use a Deamon Process i suppose the idea is to send the command to a file that will be executed by a script that is considered "root" user.. its difficult to understand why they would call this a Deamon Process and try to scare me. Perhaps it should have been called : proxy process when i got the idea that this was a proxy process.. i thought about adding a line to /var/spool/cron/root that way the cron would execute the command for me. but of course this means i have to get the system time and then add 1 second to it and then add it to that line so cron would execute the command for me as root but my script demands an output instantly. so i suppose i need to create a DEAMON PROCESS that works like the cron. in other words it is a bash file that will execute the command in a plain file.. but will this DEAMON PROCESS be running a while command 24/7 every second ? would that not waste resources ? it only needs to activate itself to check for a command to execute when there is a command to be executed. i mean in PHP and other programming languages.. running a while statement when there is nothing to be executed could waste resources of the server.. so why should a deamon process constantly be listening for anything. i only want it to listen and execute when it is needed. i do not need a process that is constantly listening.

The thing is the navbar is defined at the masterpage and when you click a menuitem you are redirected to the corresponding child page so how would you do to change the navbar active item consecuently without replicating the logic in each child page? (Preferably without session variables and javascript only at master page)

  I have remote email access from an iPhone or my Android phone, but I cannot setup a Windows Email Client to check my email using the exact same information I provided in my phones.   I have servlets that caches user information rather then retrieving it from the user store on every request (shared Ehcache). The issue I have is that if a client is multi-threaded and they make more then one simultaneous request, before they have been authenticated, then I get this in my log: Retrieving User [Bob] Retrieving User [Bob] Retrieving User [Bob] Returned [Bob] ...caching Returned [Bob] ...caching Returned [Bob] ...caching What I would want is that the first request would call the user service, while the other two requests get blocked - and when the first request returns, and then caches the object, the other two requests go through: Retrieving User [Bob] blocking... blocking... Returned [Bob] ...caching [Bob] found in cache [Bob] found in cache I've thought about locking on the String "Bob" (because due to interning it's always the same object right?). Would that work? And if so how do I keep track of the keys that actually exist in the cache and build a locking mechanism around them that would then return the valid object once it's retrieved. Thanks.

  I've mounted a directory via sshfs: sshfs <user>@<host>:/var/www <host>/ However, after a few hours, the "something" happens, and I can no longer use the mounted directory. Symptoms are similar to when an nfsmounted server becomes unavailable: ls fails, cd fails, etc. I've attempted sshfs -o reconnect <user>@<host>:/var/www <host>/ but that never responded. Does anyone know how I can either unmount the directory, and remount it, or force sshfs to reconnect to the server?
