In light of this announcement I thought I would put together some thoughts about how I see this development. I think the key word in this announcement is "commercial", nowhere does Oracle announce the "death of GlassFish" in contrary Oracle reaffirm; GlassFish Server Open Source Edition continues to be the strategic foundation for Java EE reference implementation going forward. And for developers, updates will be delivered as needed to continue to deliver a great developer experience for GlassFish Server Open Source Edition so GlassFish is not about to go away soon. In a similar fashion RedHat do not provide commercial support for WildFly and only provide commercial support for JBoss EAP. Admittedly JBoss EAP and WildFly are much closer together than GlassFish and WebLogic but WildFly and JBoss EAP are absolutely NOT the same thing. The key going forward to the viability of GlassFish as a production platform is how the GlassFish community develops; How often does the community release binary builds? How open is the community to bug fixes? How much engineering resource does Oracle commit to GlassFish? At this stage we just don't know the answers to these questions. If the GlassFish open source project continues on it's current trajectory without a commercial support offering then I don't see much of a problem. Oracle just have to work harder to sell migration paths to WebLogic in the same way as RedHat have to sell migration paths from WildFly to JBoss EAP. In the meantime C2B2 continues to offer support for your operational JEE applications running on GlassFish and we will endeavour to work with the community to get any bugs fixed. The key difference is we can no longer back our Expert Support with a support contract from Oracle for patches and fixes for any release greater than 3.x. Read the complete article here. 6 Facts About GlassFish Announcement By Bruno.Borges Fact #1 - GlassFish Open Source Edition is not dead GlassFish Server Open Source Edition will remain the reference implementation of Java EE. The current trunk is where an implementation for Java EE 8 will flourish, and this will become the future GlassFish 5.0. Calling "GlassFish is dead" does no good to the Java EE ecosystem. The GlassFish Community will remain strong towards the future of Java EE. Without revenue-focused mind, this might actually help the GlassFish community to shape the next version, and set free from any ties with commercial decisions. Fact #2 - OGS support is not over As I said before, GlassFish Server Open Source Edition will continue. Main change is that there will be no more future commercial releases of Oracle GlassFish Server. New and existing OGS 2.1.x and 3.1.x commercial customers will continue to be supported according to the Oracle Lifetime Support Policy. In parallel, I believe there's no other company in the Java EE business that offers commercial support to more than one build of a Java EE application server. This new direction can actually help customers and partners, simplifying decision through commercial negotiations. Fact #3 - WebLogic is not always more expensive than OGS Oracle GlassFish Server ("OGS") is a build of GlassFish Server Open Source Edition bundled with a set of commercial features called GlassFish Server Control and license bundles such as Java SE Support. OGS has at the moment of this writing the pricelist of U$ 5,000 / processor. One information that some bloggers are mentioning is that WebLogic is more expensive than this. Fact 3.1: it is not necessarily the case. The initial edition of WebLogic is called "Standard Edition" and falls into a policy where some “Standard Edition” products are licensed on a per socket basis. As of current pricelist, US$ 10,000 / socket. If you do the math, you will realize that WebLogic SE can actually be significantly more cost effective than OGS, and a customer can save money if running on a CPU with 4 cores or more for example. Quote from the price list: “When licensing Oracle programs with Standard Edition One or Standard Edition in the product name (with the exception of Java SE Support, Java SE Advanced, and Java SE Suite), a processor is counted equivalent to an occupied socket; however, in the case of multi-chip modules, each chip in the multi-chip module is counted as one occupied socket.” For more details speak to your Oracle sales representative - this is clearly at list price and every customer typically has a relationship with Oracle (like they do with other vendors) and different contractual details may apply. And although OGS has always been production-ready for Java EE applications, it is no secret that WebLogic has always been more enterprise, mission critical application server than OGS since BEA. Different editions of WLS provide features and upgrade irons like the WebLogic Diagnostic Framework, Work Managers, Side by Side Deployment, ADF and TopLink bundled license, Web Tier (Oracle HTTP Server) bundled licensed, Fusion Middleware stack support, Oracle DB integration features, Oracle RAC features (such as GridLink), Coherence Management capabilities, Advanced HA (Whole Service Migration and Server Migration), Java Mission Control, Flight Recorder, Oracle JDK support, etc. Fact #4 - There’s no major vendor supporting community builds of Java EE app servers There are no major vendors providing support for community builds of any Open Source application server. For example, IBM used to provide community support for builds of Apache Geronimo, not anymore. Red Hat does not commercially support builds of WildFly and if I remember correctly, never supported community builds of former JBoss AS. Oracle has never commercially supported GlassFish Server Open Source Edition builds. Tomitribe appears to be the exception to the rule, offering commercial support for Apache TomEE. Fact #5 - WebLogic and GlassFish share several Java EE implementations It has been no secret that although GlassFish and WebLogic share some JSR implementations (as stated in the The Aquarium announcement: JPA, JSF, WebSockets, CDI, Bean Validation, JAX-WS, JAXB, and WS-AT) and WebLogic understands GlassFish deployment descriptors, they are not from the same codebase. Fact #6 - WebLogic is not for GlassFish what JBoss EAP is for WildFly WebLogic is closed-source offering. It is commercialized through a license-based plus support fee model. OGS although from an Open Source code, has had the same commercial model as WebLogic. Still, one cannot compare GlassFish/WebLogic to WildFly/JBoss EAP. It is simply not the same case, since Oracle has had two different products from different codebases. • cURL works but PHP cURL fails to internet [migrated]

  Trying to diagnose an issue using PHP to cURL to an Internet location on a RedHat Linux server. cURL is installed and working, and: <?php var_dump(curl_version()); ?> shows all the correct information in the output. The issue is I can use PHP to cURL to localhost on the box itself, but not the Internet (see below). Normally I'd suspect the firewall, but I can cURL from the command line to the Internet without a problem. The box can also update it's own software packages, etc. What am I missing? • Why "object reference not set to an instance of an object" doesn't tell us which object?

  We're launching a system, and we sometimes get the famous exception NullReferenceException with the message Object reference not set to an instance of an object. However, in a method where we have almost 20 objects, having a log which says an object is null, is really of no use at all. It's like telling you, when you are the security agent of a seminar, that a man among 100 attendees is a terrorist. That's really of no use to you at all. You should get more information, if you want to detect which man is the threatening man. Likewise, if we want to remove the bug, we do need to know which object is null. Now, something has obsessed my mind for several months, and that is: Why .NET doesn't give us the name, or at least the type of the object reference, which is null?. Can't it understand the type from reflection or any other source? Also, what are the best practices to understand which object is null? Should we always test nullability of objects in these contexts manually and log the result? Is there a better way?

  The main advantage is the use of ReSharper and other add-ons but we need to make a convincing argument for the purchase of Visual Studio 2012 Professional. We are currently using Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows. It is quite good but is hard to switch from using the full Professional version in the past. So far the team has compiled the following list: Extract Interface function missing. Very useful for clean SOLID code. No add-on support. Can’t install StyleCop or productivity tools. AnkhSvn, Spell checker, Productivity PowerTools, GhostDoc, Regex Editor, PowerCommands. The exception assistant is limited in Express edition. This is a big annoyance. Possibility of create a Test project based on source code. We do server development in C# so any web add-ons or anything else is useless. • DNS: forward part of a managed domain to one host, but sub domain services to another (Google Apps)

  I was going to post this as a comment against DNS: Forward domain to another host, but I don't seem able to do that. I'm in a similar situation. I have a DNS registered/managed by enom, except with the slight twist that the domain was originally registered with enom through a Google Apps account creation. The domain currently supports a Google Apps site/account. I now want to direct the bare primary domain and www entries to a hosting provider for the website component, but leave the Google Apps setup intact for its services such as calendar, mail etc. For now, I'm leaving the domain managed by enom. Also note that when I registered my account with the hosting provider, I gave the same domain name as the existing domain (e.g. example.com), so at their end I'm working with the same domain name in cpanel, etc. In my case, the existing enom DNS entries don't have an A record for the www.example.com, or the bare example.com domain. Instead, there are 4 x @ records with the Google Apps IP Address, 2 x TXT records with what I assume are Google Apps site verification strings/tokens, and a bunch of CNAME records for the various features of Google Apps (mail, calendar, docs, sites, etc). So, my questions: How do I point the www.example.com and example.com DNS entries at enom to my web site hosting provider, while leaving the domain managed by enom, and the Google Apps services working as they are now (with the obvious exception of Google Sites)? How do I setup the example.com mail-related DNS records (MX, etc) at the web site hosting provider, so that outbound email to [email protected] gets correctly sent to the google apps mail account, and doesn't get trapped inside the pseudo domain within the hosting providers servers?

  When you press F5 to start debugging Azure project, you might get the following exception: If you go to the Output windows, you will see the detailed error message below: Windows Azure Tools: Failed to initialize Windows Azure storage emulator. Unable to start Development Storage. Failed to start Development Storage: the SQL Server instance ‘localhost\SQLExpress’ could not be found. Please configure the SQL Server instance for Development Storage using the ‘DSInit’ utility in the Windows Azure SDK. This is because by default, Azure uses the SQLExpress to start Development Storage. To fix this you can do the following: You need to open command prompt, and navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows Azure SDK\v1.4\bin\devstore (depending on your Azure version, the file path is slightly different.) Next, run DSInit /sqlInstance:. (. Means the SQL Server use the default instance, if you have name instance, you need to change. to the name of the SQL Server) After a short while, you should see the following windows showing the configuration succeeds. • Should certain math classes be required for a Computer Science degree?

  For a Computer Science (CS) degree at many colleges and universities, certain math courses are required: Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Mathematics are few examples. However, since I've started working in the real world as a software developer, I have yet to truly use some the knowledge I had at once acquired from taking those classes. Discrete Math might be the only exception. My questions: Should these math classes be required to obtain a computer science degree? Or would they be better served as electives? I'm challenging even that the certain math classes even help with required CS classes. For example, I never used linear algebra outside of the math class itself. I hear it's used in Computer Graphics, but I never took those classes-- yet linear algebra was required for a CS degree. I personally think it could be better served as an elective rather than requirement because it's more specific to a branch of CS rather than general CS. • Does JAXP natively parse HTML?

  So, I whip up a quick test case in Java 7 to grab a couple of elements from random URIs, and see if the built-in parsing stuff will do what I need. Here's the basic setup (with exception handling etc omitted): DocumentBuilderFactory dbfac = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance(); DocumentBuilder dbuild = dbfac.newDocumentBuilder(); Document doc = dbuild.parse("uri-goes-here"); With no error handler installed, the parse method throws exceptions on fatal parse errors. When getting the standard Apache 2.2 directory index page from a local server: a SAXParseException with the message White spaces are required between publicId and systemId. The doctype looks ok to me, whitespace and all. When getting a page off a Drupal 7 generated site, it never finishes. The parse method seems to hang. No exceptions thrown, never returns. When getting http://www.oracle.com, a SAXParseException with the message The element type "meta" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "</meta>". So it would appear that the default setup I've used here doesn't handle HTML, only strictly written XML. My question is: can JAXP be used out-of-the-box from openJDK 7 to parse HTML from the wild (without insane gesticulations), or am I better off looking for an HTML 5 parser? PS this is for something I may not open-source, so licensing is also an issue :(

• Team Foundation Server 2012 Build Global List Problems

  My experience with the upgrade and use of TFS 2012 has been very positive. I did come across a couple of issues recently that tripped things up for a while. ISSUE 1 The first issue is that 2012 prior to Update 1 published an invalid build list item value to the collection global list. In 2010, the build global list, list item value syntax is an underscore between the build definition and the build number. In the 2012 RTM this underscore was replaced with a backslash, which is invalid.  Specifically, an upload of the global list fails when the backslash is followed at some point by a period. The error when using the API is: <detail ExceptionMessage="TF26204: The account you entered is not recognized. Contact your Team Foundation Server administrator to add your account." BaseExceptionName="Microsoft.TeamFoundation.WorkItemTracking.Server.ValidationException"><details id="600019" http://schemas.microsoft.com/TeamFoundation/2005/06/WorkItemTracking/faultdetail/03"http://schemas.microsoft.com/TeamFoundation/2005/06/WorkItemTracking/faultdetail/03" /></detail> when uploading the global list via the process editor the error is: This issue is corrected in Update1 as the backslash is changed to a forward slash. ISSUE 2 The second issue is that when upgrading from 2010 to 2012, the builds in 2010 are not published to the 2012 global list.  After the upgrade the 2012 global lists doesn’t have any builds and only builds run in 2012 are published to the global list. This was reported to the MSDN forums and Connect. To correct this I wrote a utility to pull all the builds and recreate the builds global list for each project in each collection.  This is a console application with a program.cs, a globallists.cs and a app.config (not published here). The utility connects to TFS 2012, loops through the collections or a target collection as specified in the app.config. Then loops through the projects, the build definitions, and builds.  It creates a global list for each project if that project has at least one build. Then it imports the new list to TFS.  Here’s the code for program and globalists classes. • LWJGL SlickUtil Texture Binding

  I am making a 3D game using LWJGL and I have a texture class with static variables so that I only need to load textures once, even if I need to use them more than once. I am using Slick Util for this. When I bind a texture it works fine, but then when I try to render something else after I have rendered the model with the texture, the texture is still being bound. How do I unbind the texture and set the rendermode to the one that was in use before any textures were bound? Some of my code is below. • Open Source Security packages for Rails

  I'm currently creating a complete web application using Rails 3 to familiarize myself with its inner workings and to gain a better appreciation of a working web application's moving parts. (Plus, since I'm still working on my degree, I hope that it will give me a better idea of what's BS in my education requirements and which weaknesses/skills I should focus on.) The example application I'm working on is an ecommerce site, and I've already configured the backend, routes, controllers, and so on. As part of the application, I'd like to integrate a second layer of security on top of the one Rails already provides for user authentication. However, I've been unable to find any on Google, with the exception of OAuth - which, from my understanding, is meant to secure API calls. While I could roll my own secure authentication system, I'm only in my second year of college and recognize that A) I know little about security, and B) there are developers that know much more about security that are working on open-source projects. What are some actively developed open-source security packages or frameworks that can be easily added to Rails? Pros and cons are not necessary, as I can do the research myself. P.S. I'm not sure whether I posted this in the right SE site; please migrate to SO or Security if it is more appropriate there.

Hence compared with the working XML file. Result is clean. Below portion of the error struck me Thrown while creating OAVars object for file: /tmp//dummy.xml   Cause : The /tmp is 100% full.   Fix: Either remove the old files in /tmp  directory  OR  export TEMP=/new/location where there is plenty of free space.

  I have two questions : What is the difference between executing sh filename.sh and filename.sh? How can I make both of them giving me the same output ? I'm asking this question as right now I'm facing a problem. I'm trying to run a Java + SWT application from terminal. When I do filename.sh, it gives me the desired output. • WSDL-world vs CLR-world – some differences

  A change in mindset is required when switching between a typical CLR application and a web service application. There are some things in a CLR environment that just don’t add-up in a WSDL arena (and vice-versa). I’m listing some of them here. When I say WSDL-world, I’m mostly talking with respect to a WCF Service and / or a Web Service. No (direct) Method Overloading: You definitely can have overloaded methods in a, say, Console application, but when it comes to a WCF / Web Services application, you need to adorn these overloaded methods with a special attribute so the service knows which specific method to invoke. When you’re working with WCF, use the Name property of the OperationContract attribute to provide unique names. 1: [OperationContract(Name = "AddInt")] 2: int Add(int arg1, int arg2); 3:  4: [OperationContract(Name = "AddDouble")] 5: double Add(double arg1, double arg2); By default, the proxy generates the code for this as: 1: [System.ServiceModel.OperationContractAttribute( 2: Action="http://tempuri.org/ILearnWcfService/AddInt", 3: ReplyAction="http://tempuri.org/ILearnWcfService/AddIntResponse")] 4: int AddInt(int arg1, int arg2); 5: 6: [System.ServiceModel.OperationContractAttribute( 7: Action="http://tempuri.org/ILearnWcfServiceExtend/AddDouble", 8: ReplyAction="http://tempuri.org/ILearnWcfServiceExtend/AddDoubleResponse")] 9: double AddDouble(double arg1, double arg2); With Web Services though the story is slightly different. Using interchangeable data types: See details on this here. Type visibility: In a CLR-based application, if you mark a field as private, well we all know, it’s ‘private’. Coming to a WSDL side of things, in a Web Service, private fields and web methods will not get generated in the proxy. In WCF however, all your operation contracts will be public as they get implemented from an interface. Even in case your ServiceContract interface is declared internal/private, you will see it as a public interface in the proxy. This is because type visibility is a CLR concept and has no bearing on WCF. Also if a private field has the [DataMember] attribute in a data contract, it will get emitted in the proxy class as a public property for the very same reason. 1: [DataContract] 2: public struct Person 3: { 4: [DataMember] 5: private int _x; 6:  7: [DataMember] 8: public int Id { get; set; } 9:  10: [DataMember] 11: public string FirstName { get; set; } 12:  13: [DataMember] 14: public string Header { get; set; } 15: } 16: } See the ‘_x’ field is a private member with the [DataMember] attribute, but the proxy class shows as below: 1: [System.Runtime.Serialization.DataMemberAttribute()] 2: public int _x { 3: get { 4: return this._xField; 5: } 6: set { 7: if ((this._xField.Equals(value) != true)) { 8: this._xField = value; 9: this.RaisePropertyChanged("_x"); 10: } 11: } 12: } Passing derived types to web methods / operation contracts: Once again, in a CLR application, I can have a derived class be passed as a parameter where a base class is expected. I have the following set up for my WCF service. 1: [DataContract] 2: public class Employee 3: { 4: [DataMember(Name = "Id")] 5: public int EmployeeId { get; set; } 6:  7: [DataMember(Name="FirstName")] 8: public string FName { get; set; } 9:  10: [DataMember] 11: public string Header { get; set; } 12: } 13:  14: [DataContract] 15: public class Manager : Employee 16: { 17: [DataMember] 18: private int _x; 19: } 20:  21: // service contract 22: [OperationContract] 23: Manager SaveManager(Employee employee); 24:  25: // in my calling code 26: Manager manager = new Manager {_x = 1, FirstName = "abc"}; 27: manager = LearnWcfServiceClient.SaveManager(manager); The above will throw an exception saying: In short, this is saying, that a Manager type was found where an Employee type was expected! Hierarchy flattening of interfaces in WCF: See details on this here. In CLR world, you’ll see the entire hierarchy as is. That’s another difference. Using ref parameters: * can use ref for parameters, but operation contract should not be one-way (gives an error when you do an update service reference)   => bad programming; create a return object that is composed of everything you need! This one kind of stumped me. Not sure why I tried this, but you can pass parameters prefixed with ref keyword* (* terms and conditions apply). The main issue is this, how would we know the changes that were made to a ‘ref’ input parameter are returned back from the service and updated to the local variable? Turns out both Web Services and WCF make this tracking happen by passing the input parameter in the response soap. This way when the deserializer does its magic, it maps all the elements of the response xml thereby updating our local variable. Here’s what I’m talking about. 1: [WebMethod(MessageName = "HelloAnyGalaxy")] 2: public string HelloGalaxy(ref string galaxyName) 3: { 4: string output = string.Format("Hello {0}", galaxyName); 5: if (galaxyName == "Andromeda") 6: { 7: galaxyName = string.Format("{0} (2.5 million light-years away)", galaxyName); 8: } 9: return output; 10: } This is how the request and response look like in soapUI. As I said above, the behavior is quite similar for WCF as well. But the catch comes when you have a one-way web methods / operation contracts. If you have an operation contract whose return type is void, is marked one-way and that has ref parameters then you’ll get an error message when you try to reference such a service. 1: [OperationContract(Name = "Sum", IsOneWay = true)] 2: void Sum(ref double arg1, ref double arg2); 3:  4: public void Sum(ref double arg1, ref double arg2) 5: { 6: arg1 += arg2; 7: } This is what I got when I did an update to my service reference: Makes sense, because a OneWay operation is… one-way – there’s no returning from this operation. You can also have a one-way web method: 1: [SoapDocumentMethod(OneWay = true)] 2: [WebMethod(MessageName = "HelloAnyGalaxy")] 3: public void HelloGalaxy(ref string galaxyName) This will throw an exception message similar to the one above when you try to update your web service reference. In the CLR space, there’s no such concept of a ‘one-way’ street! Yes, there’s void, but you very well can have ref parameters returned through such a method. Just a point here; although the ref/out concept sounds cool, it’s generally is a code-smell. The better approach is to always return an object that is composed of everything you need returned from a method. These are some of the differences that we need to bear when dealing with services that are different from our daily ‘CLR’ life.

• Website hosted at home pingable from outside, but not browseable from outside

  I have a simple setup. Server at home has local I.P. 192.168.1.3 IIS is running on the server and the website is up. Windows firewall on the server has an exception rule for port 80 TCP Router has static I.P. XX.XXX.XX.XXX Router is forwarding TCP port 80 to 192.168.1.3 My domain registrar is my DNS host and is pointing to the static I.P. XX.XXX.XX.XXX of the router Here's what I can and can't do. I can browse the website from within my home network either by I.P. or domain name. I can ping the domain and the I.P. from outside the network (from a computer at work). I can't browse the website either by domain name or by I.P. Wierd. Why I can't browse my website? Incidentally, I wasn't sure this question was appropriate for SO, but after finding a few others similar to it on SO, and no comments on those questions saying anything about it being innapropriate, I decided I would post this question. Let me know if this is not appropriate for SO, or is more appropriate for another of the SE websites. Thanks!

• Reflector – The King is Dead. Long Live the King.

  There was enough of responses for Red Gate announcement about free version of .NET Reflector. Neither there’s a need to explain how useful the tool is for almost any .NET developer. There were a lot of talks about the price – $35 is it something to make noise about or just accept it and move on. Honestly, I couldn’t make my mind and was sitting on a fence. Today I learned some really exciting news – two (not one), two different initiatives to replace Reflector. A completely free ILSpy from SharpDevelop Commercial later to be stand-alone free decompiler tool from JetBrains These are great news. First – ILSpy is already doing what I need – you can download it and start using. Having experience with a few projects from SharpDevelop I believe it will be a great tool to have. One of immediate things that I found is reflecting obfuscated assemblies. Reflector blows up and closes, where ILSpy takes it gracefully and just shows an exception with no additional popup windows. JetBrains – company I highly respect. This is the case where I would continue paying money for their product and get more productivity. I am heavily relying on R# to do my job, and having a reflecting option would only add oil into fire of convincing others to use the tool. Though what I was excited was the statement JetBrains boldly put out: …it’s going to be released this year, and it’s going to be free of charge. And by saying “free”, we actually mean “free”.

• Patterns & Practices: Composite Services CTP2 is Public

  Finally the last CTP and pre-release version for the Composite Services is out. There were quite a lot of changes since CTP1. We added many new samples and many enhancements to the repository (DB) which is now called Inventory in sync with SOA Patterns. Here is a brief list of the main changes according to the included documentations.   Changes and additions in this release This CTP release contains reusable source code and samples to illustrate implementation for the following patterns and scenarios: Repair and Resubmit – this pattern is implemented in ESB Toolkit 2.0 as part of Exception Management Framework (EMF). This code drop provides code sample how to implement this pattern for Windows AppFabric workflow service, using Exceptions Web Service and workflow activities to create fault message, which will be created in EMF database.  Analytic Tracing – this code drop contains reusable code and samples for implementing ETW tracing: event collector service and database that store collected events. This capability may be used for scenarios that need flexibility on how collected events are decoded and processed via extensibility points you can configure and implement:  plugins and event decoders with leveraging ETW tracing capabilities provided by the event collector service.   Inventory Centralization – this code drop contains service catalog database, web services and samples to show how to implement Metadata Centralization, Schema Centralization and Policy Centralization patterns.  Service Virtualization – we included sample for implementing this pattern using WCF routing service( which is part of .NET framework) and service metadata centralization capabilities to define routing service metadata in service catalog. Termination Notification – we included sample for implementing this pattern using sample WCF service and policy centralization capabilities provided by this CTP release.   You will also find many new videos that will be uploaded to the home page any time soon.
