  • BizTalk Pipeline Component Error: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object"

    Yesterday I posted about my BizTalk Archiving Pipeline Component, which can be found on Codeplex if anyone is interested in taking a look. During testing of this component I began to encounter an error whereby the component would throw an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error when processing as a part of a Custom Pipeline. This was occurring when the component was reading a ReadOnlySeekableStream so that the data can be archived to file, but the actual code throwing the error was somewhere in the depths of the Microsoft.BizTalk.Streaming stack. It turns out that there is a known issue where this exception can be thrown because the garbage collector has disposed of of the stream before execution of the custom pipeline has completed.     If you ask the question “What is the most fun activity?” to school or college kids, most of the kids would say “bunking classes”. Many of us are grown up bunking classes in the name of stomachache, relatives marriage, high fever, rain or some other reason. Here is a wonder kid who is an exception of regular school kids. Mohammed Omar, a 17 year Indian school boy, never skipped his classes for the past 14 years. His attendance records shows 100% for all the 14 years of school he attended so far and it’s an unbelievable track record. Omar lives in Kanpur, a suburban in Uttar Pradesh with parents and a younger brother. He attended school even when the area where he lives was once flooded, had high temperature. When flooded and motor vehicles were not able to run on the streets he loaned a bicycle from neighbors. When he was on high temperature he just popped a tablet and headed towards the school.  Whatever may be the adverse situation, he just found a way to attend school instead of bunking. He recently applied for Guinness Book of World Records. The determination of the boy is incredible and inspiration to many young.   • As a solo programmer, of what use can Gerrit be?

    Disclaimer: I'm aware of the questions How do I review my own code? and What advantages do continuous integration tools offer on a solo project?. I do feel that this question aims at a different set of answers though, as it is about a specific software, and not about general musings about the use of this or that practice or tech stack. I'm a solo programmer for an Eclipse RCP-based project. To be able to control myself and the quality of my software, I'm in the process of setting up a CSI stack. In this, I follow the Eclipse Common Build Infrastructure guidelines, with the exception that I will use Jenkins rather than Hudson. Sticking to these guidelines will hopefully help me in getting used to the Eclipse way of doing things, and I hope to be able to contribute some code to Eclipse in the future. However, CBI includes Gerrit, a code review software. While I think it's really helpful for teams, and I will employ it as soon as the team grows to at least two developers, I'm wondering how I could use it while I'm still solo. Question: Is there a use case for Gerrit that takes into account solo developers? Notes: I can imagine reviewing code myself after a certain amount of time to gain a little distance to it. This does complicate the workflow though, as code will only be built once it's been passed through code review. This might prove to be a "trap" as I might be tempted to quickly push bad code through Gerrit just to get it built. I'm very interested in hearing how other solo devs have made use of Gerrit.

    I am just beginning to dip my tow into game programming and have been reading up on SDL, SFML, OpenGL, XNA, MonoGame and of course DirectX. (Needless to say there are a lot of choices out there) As much as I like SFMLs syntax I have chosen to read up and start with SDL as it is pretty ubiquitous and available on every platform (Windows, Linux, Mac) and also available on portable devices (Android, iOS) with the current exception of WinPhone 7 After that pre-amble here is my question. I notice that the docs say that for the windows platform the SDL API calls through to DirectX for higher perf. This would be great if possible. Additionally as WinPhone 8 is supposedly built on Win8 then this could mean SDL would be available on the win phone in the future too.   • null pointers vs. Null Object Pattern

    Attribution: This grew out of a related P.SE question My background is in C / C++, but I have worked a fair amount in Java and am currently coding C#. Because of my C background, checking passed and returned pointers is second-hand, but I acknowledge it biases my point of view. I recently saw mention of the Null Object Pattern where the idea is than an object is always returned. Normal case returns the expected, populated object and the error case returns empty object instead of a null pointer. The premise being that the calling function will always have some sort of object to access and therefore avoid null access memory violations. So what are the pros / cons of a null check versus using the Null Object Pattern? I can see cleaner calling code with the NOP, but I can also see where it would create hidden failures that don't otherwise get raised. I would rather have my application fail hard (aka an exception) while I'm developing it than have a silent mistake escape into the wild. Can't the Null Object Pattern have similar problems as not performing a null check? Many of the objects I have worked with hold objects or containers of their own. It seems like I would have to have a special case to guarantee all of the main object's containers had empty objects of their own. Seems like this could get ugly with multiple layers of nesting.

    According to you all, Java is the third most-hated language here. The two other most hated languages are PHP and VBScript. (It's quite funny how they stand together on the podium.) I'd like to make it known that the question mostly addresses people who don't like Java. I assume here a number of subjective opinions as facts because they're usually considered true among people who don't like Java, and I don't want to be convinced otherwise here. If you're a Java enthusiast, you might find this question frustrating. It's never been made clear if people hate Java itself, or if they hate it because of the framework, or if it's a mixture of the two. On a side you have the language, where you have: the "everything should be an object" philosophy, even in instances where it should obviously be something else (event handlers I'm pointing you); checked exceptions; the idea that all logic should be presented as methods and properties is a big no-no; the fact that "closures" created by anonymous types only include final variables and arguments, but will allow write access to any member of the parent class; a few more. On the other side, you have the JDK, with... its load of inconsistencies and overengineering; monolithic class hierarchies; meaningless base exceptions like IOException (though other frameworks have similar exception hierarchies); sluggish responsiveness even with Swing; a few more. My question is, do you think that, if either one (Java or the JDK) was taken alone, and the other was dropped in favor of something else, the new combination would be better? For instance, if you could use the C# syntax with the JDK (adapting get*/set* methods into properties, and interfaces with only one method into delegates), or the Java syntax with the .NET Framework (doing the inverse transformations), would things get better in your opinion?

    I'm trying to access WSDL(Web Service Definition Language) file using SoapClient() of PHP. I found that WSDL file is authenticated. I tried with passing credentials on an array by another parameter and active SSL on my server, still I'm getting an error.   • Java issues on OpenVZ Ubuntu 11.04 (.jar/.sh files)

    I've had a whole line of messes with java and .jar files. I've tried both OpenJDK (from software installer) and about three repositories for Sun. /Desktop# java -jar -Xmx1024m ss.jar Exception in thread "main" java.awt.HeadlessException at java.awt.GraphicsEnvironment.checkHeadless(GraphicsEnvironment.java:173) at java.awt.Window.<init>(Window.java:476) at java.awt.Frame.<init>(Frame.java:419) at java.awt.Frame.<init>(Frame.java:384) at javax.swing.JFrame.<init>(JFrame.java:174) at org.powerbot.bd.<init>(Unknown Source) at org.powerbot.Boot.main(Unknown Source) Two separate errors: ~/Desktop# ./ss.sh [SEVERE] org.server.Boot: Default heap size of 490m too small, restarting with 768m and about 30 different crashes were it just "aborts" with a huge file dump. Each time I've tried something a little different, whether it be updating Java or just changing -Xmx1024 to -Xmx1024m to get rid of the heap. Personally I think it has something to do with OpenVZ, but Google hasn't saved me this time, I need someone who can get to the bottom of my problem. java -version java version "1.6.0_26" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode) is my current install.     I just started using Slick2D and learned how simple it is to load in a tilemap and display it. I tried atleast a dozen different tmx files from numerous examples to see if it was the actual file that was corrupted.   • Improving the speed of writing code in C#

    Laugh if you want, but I used to develop substantial line-of-business applications in VB6, long before the .NET framework came along. Why, when I was your age, we used to walk two miles in the snow, uphill. Both ways... Love it or hate it, VB6 had a REPL-like feel, and a very rapid development cycle. I would like to know how to come closer to that process in C#. In VB6, I could write a function, execute it, debug it and have it fully functional in a few minutes. I am told this is how the Lisp crowd works. It's a very rapid-fire style of programming. In C# I write a function, then I write a unit test for that function (which is OK, I understand the value of that), then I right-click, run test, wait for the project to compile (takes about 10 seconds right now, which would be an eternity for a REPL loop), and get an exception. Honestly, this feels more like my junior college days, when I used to feed punch cards into a hopper and wait for a printout (exaggerating only slightly for effect). Additionally, my tendency nowadays is to make everything public while I'm testing it. Unit testing with private accessors works fine, but you can't trace through the code (unless, of course, I'm doing something wrong) while you're using them. So what I'd like to know is, what adjustments have you made to your development process in C# to streamline it, and make it possible to write and verify your code very rapidly?
