• ASP.NET MVC 2 and authentication using WIF (Windows Identity Foundation)

  Are there any decent examples of the following available: Looking through the WIF SDK, there are examples of using WIF in conjunction with ASP.NET using the WSFederationAuthenticationModule (FAM) to redirect to an ASP.NET site thin skin on top of a Security Token Service (STS) that user uses to authenticate (via supplying a username and password). If I understand WIF and claims-based access correctly, I would like my application to provide its own login screen where users provide their username and password and let this delegate to an STS for authentication, sending the login details to an endpoint via a security standard (WS-*), and expecting a SAML token to be returned. Ideally, the SessionAuthenticationModule would work as per the examples using FAM in conjunction with SessionAuthenticationModule i.e. be responsible for reconstructing the IClaimsPrincipal from the session security chunked cookie and redirecting to my application login page when the security session expires. Is what I describe possible using FAM and SessionAuthenticationModule with appropriate web.config settings, or do I need to think about writing a HttpModule myself to handle this? Alternatively, is redirecting to a thin web site STS where users log in the de facto approach in a passive requestor scenario?

• How to use PJAX? (PJAX With PHP?)

  I was trying to get PJAX working with my PHP site, this is the code I am using for it: <script src="js/jquery.js"></script> <script src="js/jquery.pjax.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(function(){ // pjax $('ul a').pjax('section') }) </script> I am just using the code they used on the PJAX demo page, but replacing the container they used (#main) with the one for my site, which was the section tag. There are no errors on the console or on the page, but it doesn't work either! Before I was using $(function() { $('ul a').pjax('section') }); and $('document').ready(function(){ $('ul a').pjax('section') }); But when I don't use either of those and just use $('ul a').pjax('section') I see this error in the console: Uncaught no pjax container for section in jquery.pjax.js (line: 353) Could I get some help with this? • CSS: Setting width/height as Percentage minus pixels

  Hi all, I've seen this question asked in a couple other contexts on SO, but I thought it would be worth asking again for my particular case. I'm trying to create some re-usable CSS classes for more consistency and less clutter on my site, and I'm stuck on trying to standardize one thing I use frequently. I have a container div that I don't want to set the height for (because it will vary depending on where on the site it is), and inside it is a header div, and then an unordered list of items, all with CSS applied to them. It looks a lot like this: I want the unordered list to take up the remaining room in the container div, knowing that the header div is 18px tall. I just don't know how to specify the list's height as "the result of 100% minus 18px". Does anyone have any advice in this situation? Thanks very much.

• Disable browser 'Save Password' functionality

  One of the joys of working for a government healthcare agency is having to deal with all of the paranoia around dealing with PHI (Protected Health Information). Don't get me wrong, I'm all for doing everything possible to protect people's personal information (health, financial, surfing habits, etc.), but sometimes people get a little too jumpy. Case in point: One of our state customers recently found out that the browser provides the handy feature to save your password. We all know that it has been there for a while and is completely optional and is up to the end user to decide whether or not it is a smart decision to use or not. However, there is a bit of an uproar at the moment and we are being demanded to find a way to disable that functionality for our site. Question: Is there a way for a site to tell the browser not to offer to remember passwords? I've been around web development a long time but don't know that I have come across that before.   Hello everyone, I am trying to get a tutorial or step by step instructions on how to connect MS Project 2010 to MS Project Server 2010. I have installed Server 2008 R2 (64 bit), Sharepoint 2010, and Project 2010 on my server and created a new site using the project 2010 template. I am now trying to connect my stand alone Project 2010 to that site for updates and such. I tried the File-Info-Manage accounts option and it comes up with "Could not retrieve server initialization data." I cannot find a step by step tutorial to set it up or to trouble shoot the error message. Any hints or good resources would be much appreciated.

• No sound after video card replaced (AMD Radeon HD 7770)

  Issue: no sound System: Dual boot Windows 7 (sda) Ubuntu 12.04 (sdb) 2 harddrives Dell XPS 730 Video card: AMD Radeo HD 7770 Diamond Multimedia Sound card: Creative Labs SB X-Fi Additional info: My sound used to work. Then, my old video card (NVIDIA geforce 280) died. I bought and installed a new video card: Radeon HD 7770. After this, my sound no longer worked in ubuntu (Win7 audio still works). Everything else in ubuntu, such as video, works fine. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that the Radeon card includes sound capability. Problem Details: If I click on System Settings - Sound, the panel freezes and stops responding indefinitely. The sound volume icon at the top of the screen (by the clock) shows 3 dashes beside it "---", and an empty drop-down box shows if I click on it. (Possibly related to 1.) When I reboot my machine, I get the message: "gnome settings daemon not responding". I have to force the reboot. I reinstalled ubunbu (perserving my home directory) and the problem persists.   We need to insert a web beacon (i know taboo) in to adobe PDFs to know when they are opened, as one of our clients is moving to a model of "giving" their documents away and following up repeat viewers for subscriptions. Its not enough to be able to provide a download, they want to attach the PDF to an email and "blast" to directed recipients (double-opt-in etc). Adding the javascript to the pdf is easy enough: (iText) and the "openAction" event. However the security box pops up and displays: "Security Warning" "Document is trying to connect to 'xxxx.yyy.com' if you trusty the site choose Allow. If do not trust the site choose Block" [help] [allow] [block] I don't think we need to completley overhaul the dialogue box, I just think we need to change the middle text to be more descriptive of why we are doing it. • SQL SERVER – SSMS: Memory Usage By Memory Optimized Objects Report

  At conferences and at speaking engagements at the local UG, there is one question that keeps on coming which I wish were never asked. The question around, “Why is SQL Server using up all the memory and not releasing even when idle?” Well, the answer can be long and with the release of SQL Server 2014, this got even more complicated. This release of SQL Server 2014 has the option of introducing In-Memory OLTP which is completely new concept and our dependency on memory has increased multifold. In reality, nothing much changes but we have memory optimized objects (Tables and Stored Procedures) additional which are residing completely in memory and improving performance. As a DBA, it is humanly impossible to get a hang of all the innovations and the new features introduced in the next version. So today’s blog is around the report added to SSMS which gives a high level view of this new feature addition. This reports is available only from SQL Server 2014 onwards because the feature was introduced in SQL Server 2014. Earlier versions of SQL Server Management Studio would not show the report in the list. If we try to launch the report on the database which is not having In-Memory File group defined, then we would see the message in report. To demonstrate, I have created new fresh database called MemoryOptimizedDB with no special file group. Here is the query used to identify whether a database has memory-optimized file group or not. SELECT TOP(1) 1 FROM sys.filegroups FG WHERE FG.[type] = 'FX' Once we add filegroup using below command, we would see different version of report. USE [master] GO ALTER DATABASE [MemoryOptimizedDB] ADD FILEGROUP [IMO_FG] CONTAINS MEMORY_OPTIMIZED_DATA GO The report is still empty because we have not defined any Memory Optimized table in the database.  Total allocated size is shown as 0 MB. Now, let’s add the folder location into the filegroup and also created few in-memory tables. We have used the nomenclature of IMO to denote “InMemory Optimized” objects. USE [master] GO ALTER DATABASE [MemoryOptimizedDB] ADD FILE ( NAME = N'MemoryOptimizedDB_IMO', FILENAME = N'E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQL2014\MSSQL\DATA\MemoryOptimizedDB_IMO') TO FILEGROUP [IMO_FG] GO You may have to change the path based on your SQL Server configuration. Below is the script to create the table. USE MemoryOptimizedDB GO --Drop table if it already exists. IF OBJECT_ID('dbo.SQLAuthority','U') IS NOT NULL DROP TABLE dbo.SQLAuthority GO CREATE TABLE dbo.SQLAuthority ( ID INT IDENTITY NOT NULL, Name CHAR(500)  COLLATE Latin1_General_100_BIN2 NOT NULL DEFAULT 'Pinal', CONSTRAINT PK_SQLAuthority_ID PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED (ID), INDEX hash_index_sample_memoryoptimizedtable_c2 HASH (Name) WITH (BUCKET_COUNT = 131072) ) WITH (MEMORY_OPTIMIZED = ON, DURABILITY = SCHEMA_AND_DATA) GO As soon as above script is executed, table and index both are created. If we run the report again, we would see something like below. Notice that table memory is zero but index is using memory. This is due to the fact that hash index needs memory to manage the buckets created. So even if table is empty, index would consume memory. More about the internals of how In-Memory indexes and tables work will be reserved for future posts. Now, use below script to populate the table with 10000 rows INSERT INTO SQLAuthority VALUES (DEFAULT) GO 10000 Here is the same report after inserting 1000 rows into our InMemory table.    There are total three sections in the whole report. Total Memory consumed by In-Memory Objects Pie chart showing memory distribution based on type of consumer – table, index and system. Details of memory usage by each table. The information about all three is taken from one single DMV, sys.dm_db_xtp_table_memory_stats This DMV contains memory usage statistics for both user and system In-Memory tables. If we query the DMV and look at data, we can easily notice that the system tables have negative object IDs.  So, to look at user table memory usage, below is the over-simplified version of query. USE MemoryOptimizedDB GO SELECT OBJECT_NAME(OBJECT_ID), * FROM sys.dm_db_xtp_table_memory_stats WHERE OBJECT_ID > 0 GO This report would help DBA to identify which in-memory object taking lot of memory which can be used as a pointer for designing solution. • Installing flex on Mac Parallels

  Hello folks, I am trying to install Flex 3 on my Windows 7 Virtual machine (parallels desktop) on my Mac Pro. The problem seems to be some sort of conflict between the copy of Flex 3 Builder installed on Mac OS X. The installer tries to install Flex in x:/Program Files/Adobe/Flex Builder 3/ but since Parallels Desktop connects all directories, there resides the Flex Builder 3 installation of MAC.   We have JSF web application that generates XLS file and gives user link to thes file. All works fine if access this file via HTTP. But IE(8) cannot open/save this xls file via HTTPS. • ISAPI Rewrite rule help ( .html -> .aspx )

  Hello, Recently I'm working on a refactor project from asp to asp.net 3.5. There are lots of .html file uses .inc file for the header and footer in the old site, and needed to be converted to .aspx uses master page. My problem is, for search engine and for bookmark those old pages are all gone Therefore I need to redirect the old .html pages to .aspx. I've been trying to find a way to fix that, finally i found ISAPI_Rewrite might be the tool that i can use. After a few hours reading the document on the site, i still have no clue how to write the syntax at all :( Could anyone give a some examples please? ex. rewrite all urls under www.example.com/en to www.example.com/ rewrite all .html to .aspx The server is using Windows 2000, IIS6, ISAPI_Rewrite 3 Lite Thanks in advance ben :)

• Lessons from a SAN Failure

  At 1:10AM Sunday morning the main SAN at one of my clients suffered a “partial” failure.  Partial means that the SAN was still online and functioning but the LUNs attached to our two main SQL Servers “failed”.  Failed means that SQL Server wouldn’t start and the MDF and LDF files mostly showed a zero file size.  But they were online and responding and most other LUNs were available.  I’m not sure how SANs know to fail at 1AM on a Saturday night but they seem to.  From a personal standpoint this worked out poorly: I was out with friends and after more than a few drinks.  From a work standpoint this was about the best time to fail you could imagine.  Everything was running well before Monday morning.  But it was a long, long Sunday.  I started tipsy, got tired and ended up hung over later in the day. Note to self: Try not to go out drinking right before the SAN fails. This caught us at an interesting time.  We’re in the process of migrating to an entirely new set of servers so some things were partially moved.  This made it difficult to follow our procedures as cleanly as we’d like.  The benefit was that we had much better documentation of everything on the server.  I would encourage everyone to really think through the process of implementing your DR plan and document as much as possible.  Following a checklist is much easier than trying to remember at night under pressure in a hurry after a few drinks. I had a series of estimates on how long things would take.  They were accurate for any single server failure.  They weren’t accurate for a SAN failure that took two servers down.  This wasn’t bad but we should have communicated better. Don’t forget how many things are outside the database.  Logins, linked servers, DTS packages (yikes!), jobs, service broker, DTC (especially DTC), database triggers and any objects in the master database are all things you need backed up.  We’d done a decent job on this and didn’t find significant problems here.  That said this still took a lot of time.  There were many annoyances as a result of this.  Small settings like a login’s default database had a big impact on whether an application could run.  This is probably the single biggest area of concern when looking to recreate a server.  I’d encourage everyone to go through every single node of SSMS and look for user created objects or settings outside the database. Script out your logins with the proper SID and already encrypted passwords and keep it updated.  This makes life so much easier.  I used an approach based on KB246133 that worked well.  I’ll get my scripts posted over the next few days. The disaster can cause your DR process to fail in unexpected ways.  We have a job that scripts out all logins and role memberships and writes it to a file.  This runs on the DR server and pulls from the production server.  Upon opening the file I found that the contents were a “server not found” error.  Fortunately we had other copies and didn’t need to try and restore the master database.  This now runs on the production server and pushes the script to the DR site.  Soon we’ll get it pushed to our version control software. One of the biggest challenges is keeping your DR resources up to date.  Any server change (new linked server, new SQL Server Agent job, etc.) means that your DR plan (and scripts) is out of date.  It helps to automate the generation of these resources if possible. Take time now to test your database restore process.  We test ours quarterly.  If you have a large database I’d also encourage you to invest in a compressed backup solution.  Restoring backups was the single larger consumer of time during our recovery. And yes, there’s a database mirroring solution planned in our new architecture. I didn’t have much involvement in things outside SQL Server but this caused many, many things to change in our environment.  Many applications today aren’t just executables or web sites.  They are a combination of those plus network infrastructure, reports, network ports, IP addresses, DTS and SSIS packages, batch systems and many other things.  These all needed a little bit of attention to make sure they were functioning properly. Profiler turned out to be a handy tool.  I started a trace for failed logins and kept that running.  That let me fix a number of problems before people were able to report them.  I also ran traces to capture exceptions.  This helped identify problems with linked servers. Overall the thing that gave me the most problem was linked servers.  In order for a linked server to function properly you need to be pointed to the right server, have the proper login information, have the network routes available and have MSDTC configured properly.  We have a lot of linked servers and this created many failure points.  Some of the older linked servers used IP addresses and not DNS names.  This meant we had to go in and touch all those linked servers when the servers moved.

• Bug with audio reCaptcha in safari

  Hi all, Can other Safari users please test http://recaptcha.net/learnmore.html for me, to see if the audio reCaptcha plays properly? On my machine, I can only hear the audio if I click the Download sound as MP3 link. I also don't get the spoken introduction at all. It works OK in Firefox and Chrome. I was alerted to this bug on my own development site, using the Zend Service for ReCaptcha. However, if it's broken on the official site, then I guess it's not a Zend bug. There don't seem to be any JavaScript errors. Any ideas?

• juju spends bootstrap-timeout with a final message it cannot find /var/lib/juju/nonce.txt

  I build two VMware's machines. First one with MAAS, second one with a fresh installation from MAAS. Region controller was installed with Ubuntu 12.04 distribution, and upgraded (. Node computing was installed from MAAS with Quantal 12.10. Juju was installed and upgraded to 1.18 (from ppa:juju/stable repository). MAAS was upgraded from cloud-archive:tools repository. In debug mode, I got how Juju connects to node. Then I run the same instruction: ssh -o "StrictHostKeyChecking no" -o "PasswordAuthentication no" -i /home/lliurex/.juju/ssh/juju_id_rsa -i /home/lliurex/.ssh/id_rsa ubuntu@ucc-nodo1.master /bin/bash It worked (with and without /bin/bash). When Juju spends all bootstrap-timeout tells it has not found /var/lib/juju/nonce.txt file. It's true, it doesn't exist. It doesn't mind if you put a timeout of 1800, 3600 or 72000, it always finishes the same.

• Where does Internet Explorer store saved passwords?

  Where does Internet Explorer store saved passwords? And since this is a programming site, i'm not literally asking for the location where IE stores passwords, but which API ie uses to save passwords. At first i assumed that Microsoft was using the standard api: CredRead CredWrite which is used to save domain and generic program/web-site credentials. CredRead/CredWrite turn around and use CryptProtectData CryptUnprotectData to encrypt data with the current user's account. CredRead/CredWrite then store the data in some magical location, which contents you can see from the control panel: But i don't see IE passwords in there. So ie doesn't store passwords using CredRead/CredWrite. What api does IE use to store passwords, and if it uses CryptProtectData, where does it then store the protected data?

• Blackberry support for Forms Authentication - ASP.NET MVC app

  I'm writing an ASP.NET MVC application that uses Forms Authentication. The target clients are a variety of mobile web browsers. When I use the BlackBerry 8530 simulator my MVC app authenticates as expected. I can visit pages whose controller methods are decorated with the [Authorize] attribute - no problem - they display and therefore I assume my Forms Authentication is working correctly. Using a physical Windows Mobile device to browse my site, I have the same experience as the BB simulator, the forms authentication works as I would expect. BUT when I try to visit the site using a Blackberry 8900 physical device the Login page keeps on looping back when I click the Login page. The device is not retaining it's "authenticated" status. I added code to verify this and I can see that: Request.IsAuthenticated: False User.Identity.IsAuthenticated: False So my question is what next steps can I take to try and find out why the Blackberry 8900 is losing it's authentication status. Is this cookie related? Anyone have any ideas? Cheers Derek

  JavaScript needs access to cookies if AJAX is used on a site with access restrictions based on cookies. Will HttpOnly cookies work on an AJAX site? Edit: Microsoft created a way to prevent XSS attacks by disallowing JavaScript access to cookies if HttpOnly is specified. FireFox later adopted this. So my question is: If you are using AJAX on a site, like StackOverflow, are Http-Only cookies an option? Edit 2: Question 2. If the purpose of HttpOnly is to prevent JavaScript access to cookies, and you can still retrieve the cookies via JavaScript through the XmlHttpRequest Object, what is the point of HttpOnly? Edit 3: Here is a quote from Wikipedia: When the browser receives such a cookie, it is supposed to use it as usual in the following HTTP exchanges, but not to make it visible to client-side scripts.[32] The HttpOnly flag is not part of any standard, and is not implemented in all browsers. Note that there is currently no prevention of reading or writing the session cookie via a XMLHTTPRequest. [33]. I understand that document.cookie is blocked when you use HttpOnly. But it seems that you can still read cookie values in the XMLHttpRequest object, allowing for XSS. How does HttpOnly make you any safer than? By making cookies essentially read only? IE6 & 7 are actually the only browsers that currently fully support HttpOnly. To reiterate everything I've learned: HttpOnly restricts all access to document.cookie in IE7 & and FireFox (not sure about other browsers) HttpOnly removes cookie information from the response headers in XMLHttpObject.getAllResponseHeaders() in IE7. XMLHttpObjects may only be submitted to the domain they originated from, so there is no cross-domain posting of the cookies. edit: This information is likely no longer up to date.

  I am using web2py to power my web site. I decided to use the web2py DAL for a long running program that runs behind the site. In some circumstances a "db.rollback()" after a commit seems to help. Very strange to say the least. Have you seen this, more importantly do you know the solution? Jay

• Overwriting the content from one MOSS content database to another

  We have a content database on our live moss server. It contains one site collection with several sub-sites. I'm using the stsadm export command to produce a cmp file, then moving this to our test server in a different farm. I then want to import this content into the content database on our test farm, using the import stsadm command results in me being left with all the existing test data as well as the live data. I tried detaching the existing content database from test in central admin and creating a new empty one,to the then run the import against that but the import failed as obviously there's not root site in the empty db. The aim is to have the data on test look like live, clearing out all the test data. Can anyone suggest a good approach to this type of problem?

• Redirect with htaccess for images onto another server without redirect looping

  Hey guys, I currently have a host where my main site is hosted on. I have set up nginx on another server to mirror/cache files being requested if it doesn't have it already, in particular images and flv videos. For example: www.domain.com is my main site. www.domain.com/video/video.flv www.domain.com/images/1.png I would like to ask apache to redirect it to imgserv.domain.com (imgserv.domain.com points to another server IP) imgserv.domain.com/video/video.flv imgserv.domain.com/images/1.png Basically redirect everything with certain filetypes and preserving the structure of the URL, like flv etc. I tried something but I am getting a redirect looping error. Could someone help me out? Thank you!

• Not getting a response when using Android Async HTTP (from loopj)

  I am using the Async Http library from loopj.com and also the sample code from the site. The problem is that when the request is made I don't get a response. I have even overridden the onFinish() function which isn't getting fire either. • Single Sign On with Forms Authentication

  I am trying to set up Single sign on for 2 websites that reside on the same domain e.g. http://mydomain (top level site that contains a forms-auth login page) http://mydomain/admin (seperately developed website residing in a Virtual Application within the parent website) Have read a few articles on Single Sign on e.g. http://www.codeproject.com/KB/aspnet/SingleSignon.aspx And they seem to suggest it is just a case of having the same machinekey section in each web.config so that the cookie encryprion and decryption is the same for each application I have set this up and I never get prompted for credentials in the sub-website (the virtual application) I always get prompted in the parent site. In addition to having the same machinekey I've also tried adding the same <authentication> and <authorisation> elements Any idea what I could be missing?
