• Ubuntu software centre, update manager fail to open

  On my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS system the Software Centre and Update Manager do not open. I am unable to install any updates. And the message given below pops up. I am looking for a step-by-step process to fix this, and as a newbie, I don't know how to use the command line. Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/extras.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_main_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened

• Mobile phone detection (brand, model, browser etc)

  What do you use to detect visitor's mobile phone, down to the model if possible? Currently we maintain our own database but it's really getting behind due to lack of manpower to maintain it, so we decided to give 3rd party solution a try. These are my candidates but I don't have time to really try them all: DeviceAtlas - 1 year personal evaluation, but basic license is affordable. Their database look solid with daily update and user-contributed tests / updates. I am favoring this one at the moment. DetectRight - I was recommended this by a colleague but really can't find much from their site. 20k devices -- really? WURFL - Open source, database collaboratively derived from UAProf. So basically if you're going with UAProf solution, you're better off with WURFL. DetectMoBileBrowsers - This looks like the simplest of all. Too bad it's language dependent (PHP). Please share your experience or suggestions!

• building kernel headers (v3.4) breaks wifi (in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS)

  I have dual-booted by Samsung Series 5 Chromebook into Ubuntu using Jay Lee's script/instructions, and then installed the ~500 updates that appear thereafter. Now, I am trying to build my kernel headers in an attempt to enable virtualization so that I can run VirtualBox (I have a VM image on a flashdrive). I followed the instructions here: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/chromebook-central/PPQFpC7mYzk mainly doing as olofj suggests in his answer, while also making sure to abide by additions/edits made by panZ and algp. However, now that I have done so, my wifi has stopped working, and when I click on the network icon in the top bar, in place of wifi networks there is a grayed-out message that says "no network devices available". I have an Atheros AR9300 Ethernet card (I think thats what you call it). Any help is much needed and appreciated. Any further details necessary to answer the question will be provided as necessary. • Architecture for subscription based application

  This is about the architecture of my application I think. I have a Rails application where companies can administrate all things related to clients. Companies can buy a subscription and their users can access the application online. Hopefully I will get multiple companies subscribing to my appplication/service. Thing is, what should I do with my code and database? Seperate app code base and database per company One app code base but seperate database per company One app code base and one database The decision I am to make involves security (e.g. user from company X should not see any data from company Y) performance (let's suppose it becomes successful, it should have a good performance) and scalability (again, if successful, it should have a good performance but also easy for me to handle all the companies, code changes, etc) For sake of maintainability, I tend to opt for the one code base. For the database I really don't know at this moment. So what do you think is the best option?

  I have a 20 GB NTFS volume that I was planning on using for a variety of purposes, including being readable by windows with little effort. Unfortunately, for some reason, I cannot execute any files on the drive, even after following the answer here (I was able to mount the volume just fine, but the error persists). How can I fix this? • Reverse X11 forwarding

  I was playing with my phone (that runs a Linux/X stack) last night and I managed to ssh into my desktop and run an application and have it show up on my phone. It was awesome. Today I'd like to sort of do the opposite. I want to view an application running on my phone on my PC. I could install a SSH server on my phone but I frankly don't fancy that purely for security reasons. I want this to be initiated from my phone. Is there a way to connect from my phone and tunnel the PC's X connection back to the phone and then run an application on the phone that show on the PC?

• Login speed varies over time

  I have a weird problem with my Ubuntu right now. My login speed is never consistent for months, sometimes it changes within weeks. What I mean is, for example, within 2 weeks, boot time is really fast and speedy but then say after that, boot time becomes noticeably slower. Usually, right after the ubuntu login sound plays, my desktop would've finished loading already but sometimes, the ubuntu login sound is already done playing and I'm still in this stage of the login -- image, exactly like that. Any reasons for this? Sometimes it slows down after updates (which I think is kind of normal?) After a few reboots, it becomes fast then randomly it becomes slow again.

• Setting Up and Managing Local IPS Repositories

  My colleague, Albert White, has published a useful article detailing how to set up local IPS repositories for use within an enterprise: How to Create Multiple Internal Repositories for Oracle Solaris 11 This is useful as most servers will not be directly connected to the Internet and most customers will want to control which Oracle Solaris SRUs (Support Repository Updates) are "qualified" for deployment within their organization.  Setting up and managing Internal IPS (Image Packaging System) Repositories is the way to do this. The concept can naturally be extended and adapted.  For example, Albert talks about a "Development" Repo containing the latest Oracle Solaris 11 deliverables.  When qualifying a software level for deployment across the enterprise, a copy of a specific level could be taken, e.g. "GoldenImage2012Q3" or "SRU8.5", and once it passes testing, be used to deploy across the enterprise.   These days many apps support asynchronous updates. For example, if you're looking at a list of widgets and you delete one of them then rather than wait for the roundtrip to the server, the app can hide the one you deleted, giving immediate feedback. The actual deletion on the server will happen in the background. This can be seen in web apps, desktop apps, iOS apps, etc. But what about when the background operation fails. How should you feed back to the user? Should you restore the UI to the pre-deletion state? What about when multiple background operations fail together? Does this behaviour/pattern have a name? Perhaps something based on the Command pattern?

  I would like to build an app like instagram or twitter. User can upload photo, type a few words, hashtag, share their location. And there will be a page like newsfeed showing updates. User can login with oauth. How do I store those data especially photos? (In those cloud thins? like Google cloud? I don't know how those cloud works) and what is the cost of it (if can compress user uploaded photos?). I currently only knows php, javascript and mysql.

  I'm making a game that uses an Entity/Component architecture basically a port of Artemis's framework to c++,the problem arises when I try to make a PlayerControllerComponent, my original idea was this. class PlayerControllerComponent: Component { public: virtual void update() = 0; }; class FpsPlayerControllerComponent: PlayerControllerComponent { public: void update() { //handle input } }; and have a system that updates PlayerControllerComponents, but I found out that the artemis framework does not look at sub-classes the way I thought it would. So all in all my question here is should I make the framework aware of subclasses or should I add a new Component like object that is used for logic.

• Is it legal to ask photo ID and credit card copy in the U.S

  I regularly order from online shops around the world and I have not see any case where the company asks for photo ID or credit card copy. Yesterday I make an order from linode.com and my order is on hold because of their "fraud check system". Is it common to ask those info in U.S. where I have never asked such info in here (Istanbul, Turkey). And I already asked what is their motive and legal stand and the reason my order is hold by their fraud system. And I also added whether is because I live in Istanbul, Turkey. Their answer was as following: "We would not be able to disclose specific information related to our fraud system." And I'm asked repeatedly whether I want to cancel my order or not. I dont questioning reputation of linode.com if I think so, I did not make an order. I think asking for photo ID is neither legal nor provide any security.
