• Public Cloud, co-location and managed services ... what is the cloud?

  Recently I have had conversation with a number of people that are selling and implementing 'cloud' solutions. I put cloud in quotes as implementations like co-location (aka co-lo) and managed services (sometimes referred to as 'your mess for less') have become popular options for companies moving to the cloud. These are obviously not pure public cloud offerings and probably more of hybrid cloud implementations as the infrastructure (PasS and IaaS)is dedicated to a specific customer. This eliminates the security, multi-tenancy, performance and other concerns that companies have regarding public cloud. Are co-location and managed services cloud to you? Are they something your company is considering when you think about cloud ?

• Bummer | Visual Studio 2012 Error on Web Publish&ndash;July Update

  Always a bummer when you update a product and something stops working.  I am hoping it is an installation issue, but each time I go to run “Publish..” in my Web Application, the publish works, but Visual Studio 2012 crashes.  I just noticed this beginning after I ran the Visual Studio 2012 RC July Updates. • Keyboard settings for a Mac+PC world

  SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information I’m one of those weridos who lives in a Mac+PC world. I write code for both iOS and Windows platforms. I also travel quite a bit, and airlines and airport security are starting to weigh your carry ons, and beginning to frown on the powerplant of batteries you need to carry to power SharePoint on an airplane. This means, my main work machine has to be a Macbook Pro, since it is the only machine that can do both XCode and Visual Studio Virtualized and SharePoint virtualized nicely. The problem this causes of course, is you will literally pull your hair out when dealing with keyboard/shortcut differences. • "Wireless disabled by hardware switch" after suspend and other hardware buttons ineffective - how can I solve this?

  I have recently purchased a Novatech nFinity N1410 laptop and am having problems with the wireless, which sudo lshw -C network tells me is Centrino Wireless-N 2230 and using the iwlwifi driver. The problem is that after the device has been suspended, I am not able to get the wireless working again without a restart. The network indicator states that the wireless disabled by hardware switch. Though Fn+F2 is meant to be the wireless switch, xev tells me that the system doesn't see it as anything at all when I press this hardware combination. Also, though the brightness up/down buttons work fine, the volume up/down buttons do not work either. What can I do to fix this? I am running Ubuntu 12.10 with all available updates installed.

• Alsa doesn't work in vlc

  Alsa Audio Output works fine from terminal, e.g. aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav. But I got to change from default to Alsa Audio Output in vlc. I found it in Tools Perfernces Audio Outputs. The issue is that when I change it to Alsa, I Loose all sound. When I leave the default I get an annoying Audio delay of about 200ms or 500ms. From what I have found you have to use Alsa Audio Outpu to fix that issue. Updated 6-26-2011 10:28pm To fix the Alsa Audio Output: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ferramroberto/vlc sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install vlc mozilla-plugin-vlc then, opened Update Manager, there were 2 updates for vlc there, I installed them and rebooted. Now alsa works fine and audio is in sync with video.

• Installing Ubuntu 12.10 on new computer with Windows 8

  I recently purchased a new HP computer (P6-2330) with Windows 8. I have tried unsuccessfully to install Ubuntu 12.10 64bit alongside Windows 8. The computer is UEFI with Secure Boot enabled. I've tried following the instruction at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI. I am able to get the GRUB menu to show up. However, as soon as I press Enter on either Try Ubuntu or Install Ubuntu, the screen goes blank. Nothing works at all, not even the Num Lock or Caps Lock keys on the keyboard. I have to use the power button to restart the computer. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get Ubuntu installed? To clarify, I have actually tried installing using both a USB stick and a DVD. The USB stick gave a blank screen, while the DVD gave the error message "Empty Security Header" after pressing Enter at the GRUB screen.

• Referencing external javascript vs. hosting my own copy

  Say I have a web app that uses jQuery. Is it better practice to host the necessary javascript files on my own servers along with my website files, or to reference them on jQuery's CDN (example: http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.7.1.min.js)? I can see pros for both sides: If it's on my servers, that's one less external dependency; if jQuery went down or changed their hosting structure or something like that, then my app breaks. But I feel like that won't happen often; there must be lots of small-time sites doing this, and the jQuery team will want to avoid breaking them. If it's on my servers, that's one less external reference that someone could call a security issue If it's referenced externally, then I don't have to worry about the bandwidth to serve the files (though I know it's not that much). If it's referenced externally and I'm deploying this web site to lots of servers that need to have their own copies of all the files, then it's one less file I have to remember to copy/update.

• How to run a file with sudo without a password?

  I've made a script that preforms various system tasks, that I run regularly, but I have to use sudo to run the script, despite the fact that I own it because it runs root privileged commands. How can I add make sudo let me run this one file without having to enter my password every time I run it? I know that there are questions regarding running commands without a password, but I wasn't able to find one on running a file without a password. I am aware of the security risks, but I'm at home on a computer that I trust.

• Gnome 3 panel and menus are all gone?

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 using gnome 3 shell. I have set my pc to automatically log into gnome shell so I do not see the login screen. Today I installed some updates and now the gnome panel is gone. When my pc logs in I ONLY see the background. There are no menus, nothing! Even the exit, minimize and maximise buttons in the top tight corner of the windows are gone. Also, alt+f2 also does not work. Any ideas how to fix this? I have a Nvidia Geforce 7900GTO with the Nvidia proprietary drivers installed. I have also used the recovery mode and removed some packages that apparently were broken. Still does not work.

• how to launch grub menu for ubuntu guests in virtualbox?

  I have ubuntu 12.04 alpha installed in virtualbox. When the virtual machine is started, it boots directly to the login screen without showing the grub menu. How can I get the grub menu to show up on start? Please note: the graphics is broken after recent updates, so i cannot login and make the changes. it is stuck at the screen "Ubuntu is running on low graphics mode" and the mouse and other keys do not work. • Java JRE 7 Certified with Oracle E-Business Suite

  Java Runtime Environment 7u10 (a.k.a. JRE 1.7.0_10 build 18) and later updates on the JRE 7 codeline are now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12 Windows-based desktop clients. What do you need to do and where are the official patch requirements?
