• Configuring an Engenius 3500

  The title speaks to only half of the issue: the other half are the settings in Ubuntu and the sequences therein. The computer in this issue does receive internet with the external antenna jack at the back being fed with a simple magnetic base antenna designed for putting on the roof of an automobile. However, that signal is weak and the Engenius with an external antenna (Rootenna ~15db gain) and ehternet wire will supply a stronger, faster signal. I've set the Engenius to the desired source and entered the correct WEP password. The lights on the Engenius indicate that it's connected to the access point. At the Ubuntu side of this I've worked to no avail changing settings with "Edit Connections" to the point I'm Ask(ing)Ubuntu for help. I have and have RTFM for Engenius 3500 There is an embarrassing side note to this issue: At one time I had the Engenius working! It seems that I can't recall the settings and sequences I used way back when. And I may as well confess to not knowing the Command Line. I'm a GUI guy. Thank you for your time, Doug

• Default mount options on auto-mounted NTFS partitions (how to add `noexec` and `fmask=0111`?)

  I use auto-mounting of external USB devices, and it works as expected, except that NTFS partitions are mounted with executability flag on. For example: /dev/sdb1 on /media/Elements type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions) All normal files are -rwxrwxrwx on this partition. I am not happy with the xs. I know I can have it mounted the way I want if I pass the fmask=0111 option. Now I use Lucid, and suppose it uses some new auto-mounting mechanism (gvfs-mount?), but I don't really know how the default mounting options can be changed now. Gconf settings in /system/storage/default_options/ntfs/mount_options have no effect. So, how do I make fmask=0111 the default automounting option for all NTFS partitions? (I'd be grateful also if someone explains how the current automounting mechanism works, how to configure it, and if the default mounting options are hard-coded, what I have to recompile to change them). I know that I can put a line in the /etc/fstab and/or mount manually, but this is not the solution I want, because 1) I don't want to edit /etc/fstab for each and every external drive I use, 2) fstab records appear in the Places pane of Nautilus, even if the drives are not present. The questions is how to change the defaults.

• Internal Libraries (Subversion Externals, 'library' branch, or just another folder)

  Currently working on multiple projects that need to share internal libraries. The internal libraries are updated continually. Currently only 1 project needs to be stable but soon we will need to have both projects stable at any given time. What is the best way to SVN internal libraries? Currently we are using the 'just another folder' like so... trunk\project1 trunk\project2 trunk\libs It causes a major headache when a shared library is updated for project1 and project2 is now dead until the parts that use the library are updated. So after doing some research on SVN externals I thought of this... trunk\project1\libs (external to trunk\libs @ some revision) trunk\project2\libs (external to trunk\libs @ different revision) trunk\libs\ I'm a little worried about how externals work with commits and not making library commits so complicated that I am the only one capable of doing it (mostly worried about branches with externals as we use them extensively). On top of that we have multiple programming languages within each project some of which don't support per-project library directories (at least not easily) so we would need to check out on a per project basis instead of checking out the trunk. There is also the 'vendor' style branching of libraries but it has the same problem as above where the library would have to be a sub folder of each project and is maybe a little to complicated for how little projects we have. Any insight would be nice. I've spent quite a bit of time reading the Subversion book and feeling like I'm getting no where.

• Break a class in twain, or impose an interface for restricted access?

  What's the best way of partitioning a class when its functionality needs to be externally accessed in different ways by different classes? Hopefully the following example will make the question clear :) I have a Java class which accesses a single location in a directory allowing external classes to perform read/write operations to it. Read operations return usage stats on the directory (e.g. available disk space, number of writes, etc.); write operations, obviously, allow external classes to write data to the disk. These methods always work on the same location, and receive their configuration (e.g. which directory to use, min disk space, etc.) from an external source (passed to the constructor). This class looks something like this: public class DiskHandler { public DiskHandler(String dir, int minSpace) { ... } public void writeToDisk(String contents, String filename) { int space = getAvailableSpace(); ... } public void getAvailableSpace() { ... } } There's quite a bit more going on, but this will do to suffice. This class needs to be accessed differently by two external classes. One class needs access to the read operations; the other needs access to both read and write operations. public class DiskWriter { DiskHandler diskHandler; public DiskWriter() { diskHandler = new DiskHandler(...); } public void doSomething() { diskHandler.writeToDisk(...); } } public class DiskReader { DiskHandler diskHandler; public DiskReader() { diskHandler = new DiskHandler(...); } public void doSomething() { int space = diskHandler.getAvailableSpace(...); } } At this point, both classes share the same class, but the class which should only read has access to the write methods. Solution 1 I could break this class into two. One class would handle read operations, and the other would handle writes: // NEW "UTILITY" CLASSES public class WriterUtil { private ReaderUtil diskReader; public WriterUtil(String dir, int minSpace) { ... diskReader = new ReaderUtil(dir, minSpace); } public void writeToDisk(String contents, String filename) { int = diskReader.getAvailableSpace(); ... } } public class ReaderUtil { public ReaderUtil(String dir, int minSpace) { ... } public void getAvailableSpace() { ... } } // MODIFIED EXTERNALLY-ACCESSING CLASSES public class DiskWriter { WriterUtil diskWriter; public DiskWriter() { diskWriter = new WriterUtil(...); } public void doSomething() { diskWriter.writeToDisk(...); } } public class DiskReader { ReaderUtil diskReader; public DiskReader() { diskReader = new ReaderUtil(...); } public void doSomething() { int space = diskReader.getAvailableSpace(...); } } This solution prevents classes from having access to methods they should not, but it also breaks encapsulation. The original DiskHandler class was completely self-contained and only needed config parameters via a single constructor. By breaking apart the functionality into read/write classes, they both are concerned with the directory and both need to be instantiated with their respective values. In essence, I don't really care to duplicate the concerns. Solution 2 I could implement an interface which only provisions read operations, and use this when a class only needs access to those methods. The interface might look something like this: public interface Readable { int getAvailableSpace(); } The Reader class would instantiate the object like this: Readable diskReader; public DiskReader() { diskReader = new DiskHandler(...); } This solution seems brittle, and prone to confusion in the future. It doesn't guarantee developers will use the correct interface in the future. Any changes to the implementation of the DiskHandler could also need to update the interface as well as the accessing classes. I like it better than the previous solution, but not by much. Frankly, neither of these solutions seems perfect, but I'm not sure if one should be preferred over the other. I really don't want to break the original class up, but I also don't know if the interface buys me much in the long run. Are there other solutions I'm missing?

• Curl Error 52 Empty reply from server

  Hello I have a cron job setup on one server to run a backup script in PHP that is hosted on another server. The command I've been using is formatted like this: curl -sS http://www.example.com/backup.php Lately I've been getting this error when the Cron runs curl: (52) Empty reply from server I have no idea what this means. If I go to the link directly in my browser the script runs fine and I get my little backup zip file. Can anyone help? Thanks, Paul

  the iframe version of likebox is by default over http. the developer wiki on facebook says on Using the Like Box with SSL I should load the FacebookConnect script over https , I don't what the FacebookConnect script only the iframe. I found that calling https://www.facebook.com/plugins/likebox.php?#ALLMYPARAMETERS# works and doesn't break the ssl even though this is not in their wiki since this not in their wiki, will it be deprecated? or can i trust on this to work for an extended while

• Attempting to update multiple partial views from a single Ajax.ActionLink

  I have a a partial view which contains other partial views. I am trying to the main partial view ( "MainPartialView" ) from an Ajax.ActionLink in a partial view contained by the main partial view ( "DetailsView" ). Everything appears to be called just fine and I can step through and it executes all of the code on the pages. However, after that is all done it throws this error in a popup box in visual studio: htmlfile: Unknown runtime error This error puts the break point in the MicrosoftAjax.js file, Line 5, Col 83,632, Ch 83632. Any thoughts? • Attempting to update partial view using Ajax.ActionLink gives error in MicrosoftAjax.js

  I am trying to update the partial view ( "OnlyPartialView" ) from an Ajax.ActionLink which is in the same partial view. While executing the foreach loop it throws this error in a popup box in visual studio: htmlfile: Unknown runtime error This error puts the break point in the MicrosoftAjax.js file, Line 5, Col 83,632, Ch 83632. The page is not updated appropriately. Any thoughts or ideas on how I could troubleshoot this? It was previously nested partial views, I've simplified it for this example but this code produces the same error. Is there a better way to do what I am trying to do? • Python: nonblocking read from stdout of threaded subprocess

  I have a script (worker.py) that prints unbuffered output in the form... 1 2 3 . . . n where n is some constant number of iterations a loop in this script will make. In another script (service_controller.py) I start a number of threads, each of which starts a subprocess using subprocess.Popen(stdout=subprocess.PIPE, ...); Now, in my main thread (service_controller.py) I want to read the output of each thread's worker.py subprocess and use it to calculate an estimate for the time remaining till completion. I have all of the logic working that reads the stdout from worker.py and determines the last printed number. The problem is that I can not figure out how to do this in a non-blocking way. If I read a constant bufsize then each read will end up waiting for the same data from each of the workers. I have tried numerous ways including using fcntl, select + os.read, etc. What is my best option here? I can post my source if needed, but I figured the explanation describes the problem well enough.   I am updating a PowerShell script that manages some .NET assemblies. The script was written for assemblies built against .NET 2 (the same version of the framework that PowerShell runs with), but now needs to work with .NET 4 assemblies as well as .NET 2 assemblies. Since .NET 4 supports running applications built against older versions of the framework, it seems like the simplest solution is to launch PowerShell with the .NET 4 runtime when I need to run it against .NET 4 assemblies. How can I run PowerShell with the .NET 4 runtime?

  OK this is presumably a hard one, I've got an pyGTK application that has random crashes due to X Window errors that I can't catch/control. So I created a wrapper that restarts the app as soon as it detects a crash, now comes the problem, when the user logs out or shuts down the system, the app exits with status 1. But on some X errors it does so too. But not on my System. GDM doesn't care about the script at all, when I relog, it's still running. I've also tried using shopt -s huponexit, with no success. EDIT2: Also here's some more information aboute the real code, the whole thing looks like this: Wrapper Script, that catches errors and restarts the programm -> Main Programm with GTK Mainloop -> Background Updater Thread The flow is like this: Start Wrapper -> enter restart loop while restarts < max: -> start program -> check return code -> write error to file or exit the wrapper on 0 Now on shutdown, start program return 1. That means either it did hanup or the parent process terminated, the main problem is to figure out which of these two did just happen. X Errors result in a 1 too. I'm using jQuery UI to switch the tabs on the location map/street view module. I've recently upgraded the Google Maps code as well as the Google Streetview code to version 3. So when I open it in Firefox, with Firebug on, as soon as I switch to the Streetview tab, the navigation and zoom in out controls show, but nothing shows.. and then when I try to drag the map around, it does not move around, but instead, causes errors in Firebug: "too much recursion". So it causes the whole browser to become buggy, slows down, and the errors happen, and nothing shows on the streetview pane. Most of the map loading code is located in inline Javascript on the page itself.
