• Domain and TS migration

  The migration steps outlined by Microsoft in the ts migration seem to deal with moving TS to a different server on the same domain and call for adding the licensing service to another system, move the licenses and then put TS on whatever server you want. However with migrating the domain as well I don't have any place to move the TS server to. So my thought was to simply re-activate my licenses on the new server using the same method as a new TS setup. My question is essentially will this work the way I think it will or will the MS activation clearing house deny the new server? Is there a procedure to follow that "deactivates" the licenses on a server so that the clearing house knows there are some free? (FWIW I can look up the license information through the eopen website and have access to the original license doc.)

• How to learn the math behind the code?

  I am a 12 year old who has recently gotten into programming. (Although I know that the number of books you have read does not determine your programming competency or ability, just to paint a "map" of where I am in terms of the content I know...) I've finished the books: Python 3 For Absolute Beginners Pro Python Python Standard Library by Example Beautiful Code Agile Web Development With Rails and am about halfway into Programming Ruby. I have written many small programs (One that finds which files have been updated and deleted in a directory, one that compares multiple players' fantasy baseball value, and some text based games, and many more). Obviously, as I'm not some sort of child prodigy, I can't take a formal Computer Science course until high school. I really want to learn computer science to increase my knowledge about the code, and the how the code runs. I've really become interested in the math part after reading the source code for Python's random module. Is there a place where I can learn CS, or programming math online for free, at a level that would be at least partially understandable to a person my age?

• Watch the Geminid Meteors Tonight

  Tonight is the peak of the Geminid Meteor shower, if you don’t mind braving the cold and have a spot relatively free from light pollution to stretch out in you’ll be able to enjoy one of the more brilliant and busy meteor showers of the year. Sky and Telescope magazine reports on the Geminid Meteor shower: If it’s clear late Thursday night, December 13th, 2012, keep a lookout high overhead for the shooting stars of the Geminid meteor shower. The Geminids are usually one of the two best meteor showers of the year, often beating out the Perseids of August. And this year there’s no moonlight to interfere. Under a clear, dark sky, you may see at least one Geminid per minute on average from roughly 10 p.m. Thursday until dawn Friday morning. If you live under the artificial skyglow of light pollution your numbers will be less, but the brightest meteors will still shine through. • my webserver with 16GB ram shows all RAM as used, but is it really, see the 'top'

  I have some questions about my web server. Its a LAMP web server running centos 5.5 and php5, mysql5. The server gets hundreds (maybe thousand) of concurrent users during peak hours. I'm trying to optimize a little and understand "top". From what I can see: all 16GB of my ram have been used up? does that mean that my server needs more memory? My swap is only 2GB, should it be increased? usually during peak hours my server load average first number is about 2.5-3. What could I do to optimize the server so that the load average even during peak doesn't go above 1? In the past I was told a good working server should stay under 1 load, is this still true? • Is an Intranet music streaming server legal?

  We are a large organization with thousands of users, and we're peaking on our Internet usage. Many of those users are streaming music while they work. We're wondering if providing a music streaming server internally would help on bandwidth. How legal is that? Here are two scenarios: 1) We purchase a body of music legally and stream it internally (I assume this is illegal) 2) We pull music feeds from free, legal, online sources and "rebroadcast" internally (I assume this is legal) We want to save bandwidth and help our users, but we want to do it in an ethical and legal way.

  I have a couple of videos at 1920x800 that use the MKV format (4.7 GB). A friend of mine has an old PC that has some problems playing them; the CPU is working at nearly 100%. Is it possible to convert these videos to a less CPU intensive video format? The final size is not a problem, it can also double or more. Into which format should I convert it and which software for Windows should I use (better if free)? Thank you in advance.

• Video/Animated GIF advanced frame editor?

  What sort of application could I use for example if I had a 5 minute video or an animated GIF with 50 frames, and I wanted to basically Photoshop replace an object, say a person's head, with another image for all those 50 frames? Is there some sort of smart tool that can do this or do I have to edit every single frame by hand? I wouldn't mind there being a tool where I can paste the image in every frame automatically, and switch from frame to frame adjusting the position of it, I just need something efficient. I've tried using Photoshop's import video into image sequence and tried editing with the animation toolbar at the bottom, but it's not quite what I want. I don't care if it's free software or not, I'm primarily using Linux but I have VirtualBox Windows XP if there's an excellent application that's not available otherwise.

• Recommended RAM and disc space for Oracle 11g on Windows

  I need to provide the recommended amount of RAM and disc space (divided in two partitions) so the customer can create an appropriate virtual machine to run Oracle. All I could find in the documentation was a brief listing with minimum RAM and typical/advanced install types. The virtual machine will run latest Oracle Standard Edition One (11g release 2 so far) under Windows Server 2008 x64 and will host a reasonably low traffic web application. How much RAM and disc must I ask for in order to be safe? (Feel free to ask for further details if I've omitted something relevant.) Update: Rough estimations: Database size: 10 MB after installation Growth rate: +3MB per day on average Size of database 'active' data: (not sure of what this means, there's not actual archive so I guess all data is current) Amount of data written per second in peak hours: a few KB Number of client sessions: 3 or 4 at most Frequency and response size of most heavy requests: some reports make heavy table JOINS that need up to 20 seconds to complete but they won't return more than a few thousand rows with plain text. The app also handles BLOBs (typical size from 50KB to 200KB)

• Can a malicious hacker share Linux distributions which trust bad root certificates?

  Suppose a hacker launches a new Linux distro with firefox provided with it. Now a browser contains the certificates of the root certification authorities of PKI. Because firefox is a free browser anyone can package it with fake root certificates. Thus a fake root certificate would contain a the certification authority that is not actually certified. Can this be used to authenticate some websites. How? Many existing linux distros are mirrored by people. They can easily package software containing certificates that can lead to such attacks. Is the above possible? Has such an attack taken place before?

From the Express website: Visual Studio 11 Express for Windows 8 provides tools for Metro style app development. To create desktop apps, you need to use Visual Studio 11 Professional, or higher. Oh dear. To develop any sort of non-Metro application, you will need to pay for at least VS Professional. I suspect Microsoft (or at least, certain groups within Microsoft) have a very explicit strategy in mind. By making VS Express Metro-only, developers who don't want to pay for Professional will be forced to make their simple one-shot or open-source application in Metro. This increases the number of applications available for Windows 8 and Windows mobile devices, which in turn make those platforms more attractive for consumers. When you use the free VS 11 Express, instead of paying Microsoft, you provide them a service by making applications for Metro, which in turn makes Microsoft's mobile offering more attractive to consumers, increasing their market share. Of course, it remains to be seen if developers forced to jump onto the Metro bandwagon will simply jump ship to Android or iOS instead. At least, that's what I think is going on. • Crossover cable in addition to normal network connection on servers?

  I have 2 servers, both with Windows 2003 R2 Each have 2 NIC ports that are 10/100/1000 They are both connected to our LAN + joined to the domain (1 NIC port free on each server) The problem is that our main router is only 10/100 on the ports that these servers are connected to. Since one server is going to host SQL 2005 and the other will be running Altiris NS7, I was hoping that I could use a crossover cable to connect the two directly, thus taking advantage of their 1gbps NIC cards. Is this possible? If so what steps do I need to take to accomplish this? What needs to be done to make sure that when the app server is communicating with the SQL server that it is using the direct link vs traversing the LAN? Thanks a lot!

• Color Calibrate Dual Monitor XP SP2

  This topic has been touched on before but not really answered. I have a dual monitor system and the colors differ wildly. I currently live Buenos Aires where color correction hardware costs premium prices. I do some graphic design, but don't require a pro-level calibration. That said, I'd like my monitors to be set as close to "true color" as possible. I've located the useful and free Monitor Calibration Wizard, but it seems to adjust the entire system internally at startup. I could use the Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet to set a different ICC or ICM profile for each monitor, but the Monitor Calibration Wizard outputs its own format for profiles.

• How do I install and use Windows Virtual PC in Windows 8?

  I really like the integrated Virtual Machine that Windows had built-in with Windows 7 with Windows Virtual PC. I'm looking to install that again. I'd like to be able to install multiple machines as I did before (XP, Ubuntu, Etc,.) but I can't seem to find Windows Virtual PC for Windows 8 any more. Is it still available?, and if not was there something setup in place to replace it? How do I use it?   This blogpost was posted on Hacker News with several upvotes. Coming from C++, most of these examples seem to go against what I've been taught. Such as example #2: Bad: def check_for_overheating(system_monitor) if system_monitor.temperature > 100 system_monitor.sound_alarms end end versus good: system_monitor.check_for_overheating class SystemMonitor def check_for_overheating if temperature > 100 sound_alarms end end end The advice in C++ is that you should prefer free functions instead of member functions as they increase encapsulation. Both of these are identical semantically, so why prefer the choice that has access to more state? Example 4: Bad: def street_name(user) if user.address user.address.street_name else 'No street name on file' end end versus good: def street_name(user) user.address.street_name end class User def address @address || NullAddress.new end end class NullAddress def street_name 'No street name on file' end end Why is it the responsibility of User to format an unrelated error string? What if I want to do something besides print 'No street name on file' if it has no street? What if the street is named the same thing? Could someone enlighten me on the "Tell, Don't Ask" advantages and rationale? I am not looking for which is better, but instead trying to understand the author's viewpoint.

• How to use Ralink RT2501/RT2573 as wifi access point in Debian Linux

  Hi, I have a fit-PC server with Debian GNU/Linux (Lenny). I would like to use it as a wifi access point since my Linksys WRT54GS has become unstable. I have a USB Ralink wifi NIC. When I insert the card to USB I can see this with lsusb: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501/RT2573 Wireless Adapter I have tried following various HOWTOs on using wifi card as AP in Linux, however, it seems that the card cannot go into monitor mode. I believe this is because I must use a newer driver or upload non-free firmware or something like that. I have tried installed wicd, but it does not help. I bought this wifi adapter because I was told that it is one of the most common used Linux supported wifi cards that can be used as access point and a lot of other stuff. So my question is: How do I set up this USB wifi card as wireless access point in Debian Lenny?

• Why is it that software is still easily pirated today?

  I've always been curious about this. Now I wouldn't call myself a programmer yet, but I'm learning, so maybe the answer to this is obvious. It just seems a little hard to believe that with all of our technological advances and the billions of dollars spent on engineering the most unbelievable and mind-blowing software, we still have no other means of protecting against piracy then a "serial number/activation key". I'm sure a ton of money, maybe even billions, went into creating Windows 7 or Office and even Snow Leopard, yet I can get it for free in less than 20 minutes. Same for all of Adobe's products, which are probably the easiest. I guess my question is: can there exist a fool proof and hack proof method of protecting your software against piracy? If not realistically, how about theoretically possible? Or no matter what mechanisms these companies deploy, hackers can always find a way around it? EDIT: So apparently, the answer is no. There's pretty much no way. And so I'm sure these big companies have realized this as well. Should they adopt another sales model rather than charging a crapload for their software (I know its justified and they put a lot of hard work into their software, but its still a lot of money). Are there any alternative solutions that will benefit both the company and the user (i.e. if you purchase our product, we'll apply $X dollars to your account that will apply to future purchases from our company)?
