  I am a software developer and I need to test my software on different OS all the time. I am using free VPC images from IE6 compat kit from Microsoft but they have only limited options of Windows Versions (Win XP SP3 and some restricted version of Vista). I need a service where I could rent a Virtual OS in the cloud and connect via Remote Dektop. Use for couple of hours and then discard all the stuff I have been doing there. I tried using Amazon S3 but they only have Windows Server 2003 Anyone knows of such a service that would offer different XP/Vista/7 versions ?

  What is the most proven, scalable comet server solution out there that can handle up to 100.000 real-life connections per node using HTTP streaming (not long-poll)? It must be a free, preferably open-source project. We've already tried Meteor (Perl), with no success. Meteor was able to scale just up to 20.000 connections per node. We are looking right now at these options: APE (C++), Orbited (Python), Grizzly (Glassfish), Cometd (Jetty). Any big success stories with any of these?

  What are some good examples of exuberant in-game instructions for telling the player to repeatedly and quickly press a button or perform an action? I'm especially interested in examples in retro games (e.g., from the NES, SNES, and 1980-90s arcade eras), and I would love to see examples with text, graphics, or both. To illustrate, here are a few examples of the type of instructions that I'm thinking of: Smash the A button to lift something heavy! Toggle the joystick back and forth to break free! Quickly press the button to build power in a meter! I'm working on a 2D iOS game with retro-style pixel art, and there's a point where I want the player to quickly tap on a sprite to complete an action. I have a serviceable starting point -- the word "TAP" flashing with an arrow repeatedly moving downward beneath it: But it still doesn't feel quite right. I would love to see some actual examples from the golden days of 2D gaming to use as reference material. I know examples abound, but I'm just struggling to think of any concrete ones at the moment. Can you think of any examples of this type of thing in old games?

  I wanted to officially thank the organizers, speakers, volunteers and the attendees of SharePoint Saturday South Florida. Being the first event in South Florida the reception was phenomenon and the group of speakers from keynote by Joel Oleson to session’s speakers from well renowned speakers like John Holliday, Randy Disgrill, Richard Harbridge, Ameet Phadnis, Fabian Williams, Chris McNulty, Jaime Velez to organizers like Michael Hinckley amongst others. With my Business Intelligence (BI) presentation being on the last track of the day, I spent very quality time networking with these great guys and getting the insider scope on International SharePoint Community from Joel and his son which was mesmerizing. I had a very active audience to a point where we couldn’t accommodate all the contents within the 1hr allocated time because they were very engaged and wanted a deep dive session on news features like PowerPivot, enhancements on PerformancePoint, Excel Services amongst others in order to understand the business value and how SharePoint 2010 is making the self-service BI become a reality. These community events allows the attendees experience technology first hand and network with MVPs, authors, experts providing high quality educational sessions usually for free which is a reason to attend. • Why is the size of antivirus greater than that of anti malware? [on hold]

  Recently my computer was attacked by different kinds of worms and my computer was slowed down. So I tried to remove them by installing Avast free antivirus. The worms were copying themselves rapidly. But after installing avast, I observed it only blocked new copy of the worms to be created but could not delete the already created worms, even it could not find worms in a good amount. Then I downloaded Malwarewbyte Anti Malware and to my surprise I found out its service was way too better than Avast antivirus. It detected and deleted almost 2065 worms and malwares from my computer and now my computer is doing fine. As far as I know, anti malware functionality is also included in Antivirus, But then also its performance is poor. Now my question is if performance of antiviruses are meat to be poor than Antimalwares, then why the size of Avast is 179Mb and the size of Malwarebyte is 9.81mb?

• Printer monitor software across multiple workstations (AD integrated)

  I was asked to see if there is any kind of (free) software that allows multiple people in an office that use the same printer to see what jobs have finished recently, which are queued and which is printing. Main reason is that sometimes multiple people have the same task where they need to print some kind of form, and they are unsure whether or not their colleague has already printed the file. Because the printer is AD integrated, they only see a short message when printing, but they do not see a proper printer queue. A simple tray icon/tool would be perfect, no real graphical user interface is required. If this turns out to be too hard to find, I will attempt to write a simple application or script for the job, but since this is a low priority job I decided to ask here first before I start messing around with scripting which isn't my forte. • Computer Studdering When Transferring Over Network

  This is a really weird problem that I've never even seen before. When I copy to or from my server share, my computer studders terribly and the data transfers very slowly at only around 12MB/s. By studdering I mean the mouse skips around and all my applications respond very slowly; as soon as I cancel the transfer it resolves immediately. I looked at Task Manager and the CPU is only at ~35% with plenty of RAM free. This only started semi-recently; before, I had no problems and the transfer speed maxed out the gigabit connection. I have two hard drives in my computer. When I try transferring files between drives it's fine, but when I copy from the share to either drive or to it from either drive, I get studdering. I'm running Windows 7 x64. Anyone have any idea what's going on? Any help would be much appreciated.

• Internet cafe software for linux

  I have gotten a request to roll out a total of 8 internet cafe's in a large network. Budget is non-existent as it will all be done for a non-profit. I was planing to use Ubuntu and live-cds to minimize the amount of management required, but I can't seem to find any suitable internet cafe system that is Ubuntu based. The requirements are pretty basic: It needs to keep track of logged in time and log out users when their time it up. No billing will be done, it will just be used to ensure people can share the computers fairly. It should be possible to force logout from a central system. Users will be unskilled, so it has to have a GUI. What (preferably free, considering the shoe-string budget) software would you suggest to manage this?

• Windows HTTP proxy client to pass service requests to VPN

  I've got access to a network via CheckPoint VPN (Windows client). Problem is, I have a linux box that needs to talk to its web services and the target web servers are inside the VPN. So far, we have been unable to connect linux to the VPN (and I'm not trying to solve that problem at the moment). I'm wondering if (temporarily) I can setup a proxy server on a Windows (XP) box to shuttle HTTP requests back and forth? If so, what'd be a good application to do this? (hopefully free/open-source) TIA

• Spotlight on an Office – Reading TVP offices

  This month we’re in the UK at the Reading offices, for ‘Spotlight on an office’. The Reading Office, which is Oracle’s UK Headquarters, is based in Thames Valley Park (TVP), which is a bustling hive of activity that houses many different companies, a gym, and even a nursery. Overlooking the Thames and some of England’s beautiful countryside, this office, just a short free bus ride from Reading Town Centre is in a fantastic location. The offices themselves are made up of 5 different buildings, each with their own car park, restaurant, and design. The main building or TVP 510 as it is referred to, sits resplendent next to an extremely blue (for the UK) pond, filled with large koi-carp that on a sunny day like to come to the surface of the lake and bask. As the main hub of activity, TVP 510 is where you will find our Dry Cleaning service, the Ozone Gym, the main restaurant (which never fails to have someone in it), and the Marquee which sits outside the back amongst the picnic benches, and is where we have Barbeques in the summer time. Another highlight of the Reading Offices is tucked away in TVP530; the home of H20, and our sports and social club. This is the building that can be best be described as having the ‘cool’ vibe, where you can relax and unwind, all whilst sipping a Starbucks (or Costa if you prefer, located in TVP550), and playing a game of Pool in the cafeteria, or alternatively you can sit back and enjoy a seat in one of the luxury massage chairs! If you feel so inclined, you can also hire out an OraBike from any of the TVP offices, and if you are anything like some of my team, cycle from Reading to Bath using the towpath starting in Thames Valley Park. Oracle’s Reading Offices are a great place to work, they are home to a diverse range of people and have great atmosphere which would suit a graduate, intern, or anyone who is looking to come and work for Oracle in the UK.

• Reflecting on 2010 and Looking into 2011

  In early 2010, I had blogged and shared my excitement as I was about to embark on a new journey relocating to South Florida.     As I settled down and adjusted to my new life, I was presented with an opportunity to get actively involved and volunteer in the local Florida .Net and Project Management communities.  I have since devoted a significant portion of my time to community initiatives, coordinating the West Palm Beach .Net User Group, volunteering as a member of the INETA Speaker’s Bureau and traveling to attend/speak at .Net code camps and user groups throughout the states of Florida and New York. I have also taken on various volunteer roles at the South Florida Chapter of the Project Management Institute starting as core team member on the chapter’s mentoring initiative and ending the year as Project Manager of the chapter’s mentoring program and as Director of Electronic Communications on the chapter’s IT team. I am also serving a one year term (2010-2011) as secretary and founding board member of Florida’s first official chapter of the International Association for Software Architects (IASA).   A big thank you is due for those who afforded me the opportunity and privilege to take part of these initiatives and those who provided guidance and encouragement when I needed them the most.   Looking ahead into 2011, I hope to continue my community involvement and volunteer activities. I will start by dedicating the first 5 weekends in the New Year to teach a free comprehensive Microsoft PowerPoint class at church. My goal will be to start from scratch and slowly cover the various available PowerPoint features that can be leveraged to create captivating presentations. Two previous courts rejected the California law as unconstitutional, but soon the Supreme Court could have the final say. Whatever the Court's ruling, we must be prepared to continue defending our rights now and in the future. To do so, we need a large, powerful movement of gamers to speak with one voice and show that we won't sit back while lawmakers try to score political points by scapegoating video games and treating them differently than books, movies, and music. If the Court decides to hear the case, we're going to need thousands of activists like you who can help defend computer and video games by writing letters to editors, calling into talk radio stations, and educating Americans about our passion for and appreciation of computer and video games. • Call to daemon in a /etc/init.d script is blocking, not running in background

  I have a Perl script that I want to daemonize. Basically this perl script will read a directory every 30 seconds, read the files that it finds and then process the data. Moreover, the PID file is empty (or with a line feed only, no pid returned by daemon). Does anyone have any idea of what I am doing wrong ? EDIT : maybe I should say that I am on a Red Hat machine. Scientific Linux SL release 5.4 (Boron) Would it do the job if instead of using the daemon function, I use something like : nohup ${exe} >/dev/null 2>&1 & in the init script ?

  There are a lot of Version Control systems available, including open-source ones such as Subversion, Git, and Mercurial, plus commercial ones such as Perforce. How well do they support the process of game-development? What are the issues using VCS, with regard to non-text files (binary files), large projects, etc? What are solutions to these problems, if any? For organization of Answers, let's try on a per-package basis. Update each package/Answer with your results. Also, please list some brief details in your answer, about whether your VCS is free or commercial, distributed versus centralized, etc. Update: Found a nice article comparing two of the VCS below - apparently, Git is MacGyver and Mercurial is Bond. Well, I'm glad that's settled... And the author has a nice quote at the end: It’s OK to proselytize to those who have not switched to a distributed VCS yet, but trying to convert a Git user to Mercurial (or vice-versa) is a waste of everyone’s time and energy. Especially since Git and Mercurial's real enemy is Subversion. Dang, it's a code-eat-code world out there in FOSS-land...

• GlusterFS with CIFS, quotas and LDAP

  Has anyone had experience plugging GlusterFS and Openfiler together or something similar? Here is the motivation: Disk space on multiple server regrouped using GlusterFS Centralized access using LDAP/AD and quota management using Openfiler as the GlusterFS client SMB/CIFS server for easy sharing to multiple users on Mac and Windows I know I can have Gluster installed on Openfiler (rPath Linux) successfully but Openfiler seems to be very picky on what it can use as a shared drive. Mounting the Gluster volume inside an existing share does not seem to allow quotas with the mounted folder free space. If this is not possible, is there any alternative to give the same capabilities?

• Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 1)

  Over the past couple of months I've been working on a couple of projects that have used the free Google Maps API to add interactive maps and geocoding capabilities to ASP.NET websites. In a nutshell, the Google Maps API allow you to display maps on your website, to add markers onto the map, and to compute the latitude and longitude of an address, among many other tasks. With some Google Maps API experience under my belt, I decided it would be fun to implement a store locator feature and share it here on 4Guys. A store locator lets a visitor enter an address or postal code and then shows the nearby stores. Typically, store locators display the nearby stores on both a map and in a grid, along with the distance between the entered address and each store within the area. To see a store locator in action, check out the Wells Fargo store locator. This article is the first in a multi-part series that walks through how to add a store locator feature to your ASP.NET application. In this inaugural article, we'll build the database table to hold the store information. Next, we'll explore how to use the Google Maps API's geocoding feature to allow for flexible address entry and how to translate an address into latitude and longitude pairs. Armed with the latitude and longitude coordinates, we'll see how to retrieve nearby locations as well as how to compute the distance between the address entered by the visitor and the each nearby store.
