  • How to do integrated testing?

    - by Enthusiastic Programmer
    So I have been reading up on a lot of books surrounding testing. But all the books I've read have the same flaws. They will all tell you the definitions of testing. But I have not found a single book that will guide you into integration testing (or pretty much anything higher then unit testing). Is integration testing that elusive or am I reading the wrong books? I'm a hands on person, so I would appreciate it if someone could help me with a simple program: Let's say you need to make some sort of calculation program that calculates something (doesn't matter what) and exports it to *.txt file. Let's assume we use the Model View Controller design principle. And one class for the actual calculating which you'll use in the model and one for writing the textfile. So: View = Controller = Model = CalculationClass, FileClass So for unittesting: You'd test the calculationClass, I'd personally focus most of my unit tests there. And less time on unit testing the view/controller/FileClass. I personally wouldn't see the use of unittesting those unless you want a really robust program. Integration testing: Now this is where I run into a wall. What would I have to test to call it an integration test? I could stub the view and feed the controller data which it would pass on to the model and so forth. And then check what the view gets back in the end. But ... Couldn't I just run the (in this case small) program then and test it manually? Would this be considered a integration test too, or does it have to be automated? Also, can I check multiple items to see if they are correct? I cannot seem to find any book that offers a hands on approach to methods of integration testing.

  • "net use /delete" question

    - by tinmaru
    I want to delete a network connection. When I type net use I get this: Microsoft Windows XP [version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\totonet use État Local Distant Réseau OK M: \192.168.5.138\share Réseau Microsoft Windows OK R: \192.168.2.18\tools Réseau Microsoft Windows OK \192.168.2.43\data Réseau Microsoft Windows La commande s'est terminée correctement. The syntax for deleting a network map is : net use /delete X: if I want to delete a specific connection net use /delete * * if I want to delete all connections. How can I delete the \192.168.2.43\data connection which, as you can see, is not link to any logical letter?

  • Strangling the life out of Software Testing

    - by MarkPearl
    I recently did a course at the local university on Software Engineering. At the beginning of the course I looked over the outline of the subject and there seemed to be some really good content. It covered traditional & agile project methodologies, some general communication and modelling chapters and finished off with testing. I was particularly excited to see the section on testing as this was something I learnt on my own and see great value in. The course has now just ended and I am very disappointed. I now know one of the reasons why so few people i.e. in my region do Test Driven Development, or perform even basic testing methodologies. The topic was to academic! Yes, you might be able to list 4 different types of black box test approaches vs. white box test approaches and describe the characteristics of Smoke Tests, but never during course did we see an example of an actual test or how it might be implemented! In fact, if I did not have personal experience of applying testing in actual projects, I wouldn’t even know what a unit test looked like. Now, what worries me is the following… It took us 6 months to cover the course material, other students more than likely came out of that course with little appreciation of the subject – in fact they now have a very complex view of what a test is – so complex that I think most of them will never attempt it again on their own. Secondly, imagine studying to be a dentist without ever actually seeing a tooth? Yes, you might be able to describe a tooth, and know what it is made out of – but nobody would want a dentist who has never seen a tooth to operate on them. Yet somehow we expect people studying software engineering to do the same? This is not right. Now, before I finish my rant let me say that I know this is not the same everywhere in the world, and that there needs to be a balance on practical implementation and academic understanding – I am just disappointed that this does not seem to be happening at the institution that I am currently studying at ;-( Please, if you happen to be a lecturer or teacher reading this post – a combination of theory and practical's goes a long way. We need to up the quality of software being produced and that starts at learner level!

  • Best Way to Handle Meta Information in a SQL Database

    - by danielhanly.com
    I've got a database where I want to store user information and user_meta information. The reason behind setting it up in this way was because the user_meta side may change over time and I would like to do this without disrupting the master user table. If possible, I would like some advice on how to best set up this meta data table. I can either set it as below: +----+---------+----------+--------------------+ | id | user_id | key | value | +----+---------+----------+--------------------+ | 1 | 1 | email | [email protected] | | 2 | 1 | name | user name | | 3 | 1 | address | test address | ... Or, I can set it as below: +----+---------+--------------------+--------------------+--------------+ | id | user_id | email | name | address | +----+---------+--------------------+--------------------+--------------+ | 1 | 1 | [email protected] | user name | test address | Obviously, the top verison is more flexible, but the bottom version is space saving and perhaps more efficient, returning all the data as a single record. Which is the best way to go about this? Or, am I going about this completely wrong and there's another way I've not thought of?

  • Chrooted user does not start in his home directory and does not load his bash_profiles

    - by Stuffy
    If the users logs in, he starts in / of the chroot (Which is /var/jail on the real machine). I would like him to start in his home-dir. Also, he seems not to load any of his profile-files (.bash.rc etc). I followed this tutorial to create the chroot environment. This is what my /etc/passwd looks like: test:x:1004:1008:,,,:/var/jail/home/test:/bin/bash this is what my /var/jail/etc/passwd file looks like: test:x:1004:1008:,,,:/home/test:/bin/bash I also found out that, if I remove Match User test ChrootDirectory /var/jail AllowTCPForwarding no X11Forwarding no from my /etc/ssh/sshd_config, the user starts in his correct home-folder and with his bash-settings loaded. However, he is able to leave the chroot-environment if I remove that part. This question I asked before is somewhat related, since I think the wrong look of the commandline is caused from the not loaded profile-files. So any ideas how to fix this?

  • Prevent email to root@domain

    - by kml
    I'm running Ubuntu Server 12.04 as a web server and use Exim4 for sending confirmation emails and such. Is there a way to set a system-wide email address for the root user? In other words, I'd like ALL email to go to a different address rather than [email protected]. For example, this command... echo "test" | mail -v -s test root ...would go to a different address, as well as all cron tasks that root executes: # m h dom mon dow user command 17 * * * * root cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly 25 6 * * * root test -x /usr/sbin/anacron || ( cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.daily ) 47 6 * * 7 root test -x /usr/sbin/anacron || ( cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.weekly ) 52 6 1 * * root test -x /usr/sbin/anacron || ( cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.monthly )

  • RegLoadAppKey working fine on 32-bit OS, failing on 64-bit OS, even if both processes are 32-bit

    - by James Manning
    I'm using .NET 4 and the new RegistryKey.FromHandle call so I can take the hKey I get from opening a registry file with RegLoadAppKey and operate on it with the existing managed API. I thought at first it was just a matter of a busted DllImport and my call had an invalid type in the params or a missing MarshalAs or whatever, but looking at other registry functions and their DllImport declarations (for instance, on pinvoke.net), I don't see what else to try (I've had hKey returned as both int and IntPtr, both worked on 32-bit OS and fail on 64-bit OS) I've got it down to as simple a repro case as I can - it just tries to create a 'random' subkey then write a value to it. It works fine on my Win7 x86 box and fails on Win7 x64 and 2008 R2 x64, even when it's still a 32-bit process, even run from a 32-bit cmd prompt. EDIT: It also fails in the same way if it's a 64-bit process. on Win7 x86: INFO: Running as Admin in 32-bit process on 32-bit OS Was able to create Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx\a95b1bbf-7a04-4707-bcca-6aee6afbfab7 and write a value under it on Win7 x64, as 32-bit: INFO: Running as Admin in 32-bit process on 64-bit OS Unhandled Exception: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the registry key '\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx\ce6d5ff6-c3af-47f7-b3dc-c5a1b9a3cd22' is denied. at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.Win32Error(Int32 errorCode, String str) at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.CreateSubKeyInternal(String subkey, RegistryKeyPermissionCheck permissionCheck, Object registrySecurityObj, RegistryOptions registryOptions) at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.CreateSubKey(String subkey) at LoadAppKeyAndModify.Program.Main(String[] args) on Win7 x64, as 64-bit: INFO: Running as Admin in 64-bit process on 64-bit OS Unhandled Exception: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the registry key '\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx\43bc857d-7d07-499c-8070-574d6732c130' is denied. at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.Win32Error(Int32 errorCode, String str) at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.CreateSubKeyInternal(String subkey, RegistryKeyPermissionCheck permissionCheck, Object registrySecurityObj, RegistryOptions registryOptions) at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.CreateSubKey(String subkey, RegistryKeyPermissionCheck permissionCheck) at LoadAppKeyAndModify.Program.Main(String[] args) source: class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("INFO: Running as {0} in {1}-bit process on {2}-bit OS", new WindowsPrincipal(WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent()).IsInRole(WindowsBuiltInRole.Administrator) ? • Ant + JUnit: NoClassDefFoundError

    - by K-Boo
    Ok, I'm frustrated! I've hunted around for a good number of hours and am still stumped. Environment: WinXP, Eclipse Galileo 3.5 (straight install - no extra plugins). So, I have a simple JUnit test. It runs fine from it's internal Eclipse JUnit run configuration. This class has no dependencies on anything. To narrow this problem down as much as possible it simply contains: @Test public void testX() { assertEquals("1", new Integer(1).toString()); } No sweat so far. Now I want to take the super advanced step of running this test case from within Ant (the final goal is to integrate with Hudson). So, I create a build.xml: <project name="Test" default="basic"> <property name="default.target.dir" value="${basedir}/target" /> <property name="test.report.dir" value="${default.target.dir}/test-reports" /> <target name="basic"> <mkdir dir="${test.report.dir}" /> <junit fork="true" printSummary="true" showOutput="true"> <formatter type="plain" /> <classpath> <pathelement path="${basedir}/bin "/> </classpath> <batchtest fork="true" todir="${test.report.dir}" > <fileset dir="${basedir}/bin"> <include name="**/*Test.*" /> </fileset> </batchtest> </junit> </target> </project> ${basedir} is the Java project name in the workspace that contains the source, classes and build file. All .java's and the build.xml are in ${basedir}/src. The .class files are in ${basedir}/bin. I have added eclipse-install-dir/plugins/org.junit4_4.5.0.v20090423/junit.jar to the Ant Runtime Classpath via Windows / Preferences / Ant / Runtime / Contributed Entries. ant-junit.jar is in Ant Home Entries. So, what happens when I run this insanely complex target? My report file contains: Testsuite: com.xyz.test.RussianTest Tests run: 1, Failures: 0, Errors: 1, Time elapsed: 0 sec Testcase: initializationError took 0 sec Caused an ERROR org/hamcrest/SelfDescribing java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/hamcrest/SelfDescribing at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass1(Native Method) at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass(Unknown Source) at java.security.SecureClassLoader.defineClass(Unknown Source) at java.net.URLClassLoader.defineClass(Unknown Source) at java.net.URLClassLoader.access$000(Unknown Source) at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal(Unknown Source) at java.lang.reflect.Constructor.newInstance(Unknown Source) Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.hamcrest.SelfDescribing at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal(Unknown Source) What is this org.hamcrest.SelfDescribing class? Something to do with mocks? OK, fine. But why the dependency? I'm not doing anything at all with it. This is literally a Java project with no dependencies other than JUnit. Stumped (and frustrated)!!

  • InputText inside Primefaces dataTable is not refreshed

    - by robson
    I need to have inputTexts inside datatable when form is in editable mode. Everything works properly except form cleaning with immediate="true" (without form validation). Then primefaces datatable behaves unpredictable. After filling in datatable with new data - it still stores old values. Short example: test.xhtml <h:body> <h:form id="form"> <p:dataTable var="v" value="#{test.list}" id="testTable"> <p:column headerText="Test value"> <p:inputText value="#{v}"/> </p:column> </p:dataTable> <h:dataTable var="v" value="#{test.list}" id="testTable1"> <h:column> <f:facet name="header"> <h:outputText value="Test value" /> </f:facet> <p:inputText value="#{v}" /> </h:column> </h:dataTable> <p:dataTable var="v" value="#{test.list}" id="testTable2"> <p:column headerText="Test value"> <h:outputText value="#{v}" /> </p:column> </p:dataTable> <p:commandButton value="Clear" actionListener="#{test.clear()}" immediate="true" update=":form:testTable :form:testTable1 :form:testTable2"/> <p:commandButton value="Update" actionListener="#{test.update()}" update=":form:testTable :form:testTable1 :form:testTable2"/> </h:form> </h:body> And java: import java.io.Serializable; import java.util.ArrayList; import java.util.List; import javax.annotation.PostConstruct; import javax.faces.bean.ViewScoped; import javax.inject.Inject; import javax.inject.Named; @Named @ViewScoped public class Test implements Serializable { private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; private List<String> list; @PostConstruct private void init(){ update(); } public List<String> getList() { return list; } public void setList(List<String> list) { this.list = list; } public void clear() { list = new ArrayList<String>(); } public void update() { list = new ArrayList<String>(); list.add("Item 1"); list.add("Item 2"); } } In the example above I have 3 configurations: 1. p:dataTable with p:inputText 2. h:dataTable with p:inputText 3. p:dataTable with h:outputText And 2 buttons: first clears data, second applies data Workflow: 1. Try to change data in inputTexts in p:dataTable and h:dataTable 2. Clear data of list (arrayList of string) - click "clear" button (imagine that you click cancel on form because you don't want to store data to database) 3. Load new data - click "update" button (imagine that you are openning new form with new data) Question: Why p:dataTable with p:inputText still stores manually changed data, not the loaded ones? Is there any way to force p:dataTable to behaving like h:dataTable in this case?

  • Error Loading Simple XML

    - by Rooneyl
    I have an xml document (generated from msword 2010), which I am trying to process using simple xml. • Problems manipulating strings through a stdcall to a dll

    - by ibiza
    I need to create a C++ dll that will be called from another program through stdcall. What is needed : the caller program will pass an array of string to the dll and the dll should change the string values in the array. The caller program will then continue to work with these string values that came from the dll. I made a simple test project and I am obviously missing something... Here is my test C++ dll : #ifndef _DLL_H_ #define _DLL_H_ #include <string> #include <iostream> struct strStruct { int len; char* string; }; __declspec (dllexport) int __stdcall TestFunction(strStruct* s) { std::cout << "Just got in dll" << std::endl; std::cout << s[0].string << std::endl; //////std::cout << s[1].string << std::endl; /* char str1[] = "foo"; strcpy(s[0].string, str1); s[0].len = 3; char str2[] = "foobar"; strcpy(s[1].string, str2); s[1].len = 6; */ //std::cout << s[0].string << std::endl; //std::cout << s[1].string << std::endl; std::cout << "Getting out of dll" << std::endl; return 1; } #endif and here is a simple C# program that I am using to test my test dll : using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Runtime.InteropServices; namespace TestStr { class Program { [DllImport("TestStrLib.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Ansi, CallingConvention = CallingConvention.StdCall)] public static extern int TestFunction(string[] s); static void Main(string[] args) { string[] test = new string[2] { "a1a1a1a1a1", "b2b2b2b2b2" }; Console.WriteLine(test[0]); Console.WriteLine(test[1]); TestFunction(test); Console.WriteLine(test[0]); Console.WriteLine(test[1]); Console.ReadLine(); } } } And here is the output produced : a1a1a1a1a1 b2b2b2b2b2 Just got in dll b2b2b2b2b2 Getting out of dll a1a1a1a1a1 b2b2b2b2b2 I have some questions : 1) Why is it outputting the element in the second position of the array rather than in the first position?? 2) If I uncomment the line commented with ////// in the dll file, the program crashes. Why? 3) Obviously I wanted to do more things in the dll (the parts in /* */) than what it does right now, but I am blocked by the first 2 questions... Thanks for all your help

  • Advantage database throws an exception when attempting to delete a record with a like statement used

    - by ChrisR
    The code below shows that a record is deleted when the sql statement is: select * from test where qty between 50 and 59 but the sql statement: select * from test where partno like 'PART/005%' throws the exception: Advantage.Data.Provider.AdsException: Error 5072: Action requires read-write access to the table How can you reliably delete a record with a where clause applied?
