• Best linux distro for cuda development

  Can someone suggest the best linux distro for CUDA development. The reason why I'm asking is that I tried installing the latest cuda SDK in Fedora 12, and it was a real pain in the neck. It took me 8 hours to get the nouveau driver removed and the nvidia-driver installed. After that somehow the OS decides to act up and blow up the /var/log/message file to 9 GB and eat up all my remaining space, with strange errors. I don't even understand what happened further, but my Nvidia drives don't work anymore. Please don't flame me, I'm NOT a windows fanboy or anything. I've been using Linux since 2002, and actually like it. Its just my personal experience. Would be really helpful for positive suggestions. Fanboys, please stay aside. Thanks in advance.

• Eclipse Pydev Ctrl-Click (Go to Definition) Doesn't Work OSX

  My Pydev set up in OS X is kind of busted. I'm working on a Django project and I find that Ctrl-Click never actually goes to the definitions of any of my objects or functions. I actually have a symlink to Django/django in my workspace so that it's easier to cross reference Django code. My guess is that something is wrong with the builder, but it doesn't throw up any errors. Does anyone have advice here? Different topic: does anyone know of a good way to use Ctrl-Shift-R (Open resource) and filter files by folder? It's not that useful in python projects where you have 20 urls.py showing up.

• Writing cross-platforms Types, Interfaces and Classes/Methods in C++

  I'm looking for the best solution to write cross-platform software, aka code that I write and that I have to interface with different libraries and platforms each time. What I consider the easiest part, correct me if I'm wrong, is the definition of new types, all I have to do is to write an hpp file with a list of typedefs, I can keep the same names for each new type across the different platforms so my codebase can be shared without any problem. typedefs also helps me to redefine a better scope for my types in my code. I will probably end up having something like this: include |-windows | |-types.hpp |-linux | |-types.hpp |-mac |-types.hpp For the interfaces I'm thinking about the same solution used for the types, a series of hpp files, probably I will write all the interfaces only once since they rely on the types and all "cross-platform portability" is ensured by the work done on the types. include | |-interfaces.hpp | |-windows | |-types.hpp |-linux | |-types.hpp |-mac | |-types.hpp For classes and methods I do not have a real answer, I would like to avoid 2 things: the explicit use of pointers the use of templates I want to avoid the use of the pointers because they can make the code less readable for someone and I want to avoid templates just because if I write them, I can't separate the interface from the definition. What is the best option to hide the use of the pointers? I would also like some words about macros and how to implement some OS-specifics calls and definitions.

• How to create an Ubuntu 12.10 live CD?

  I downloaded the Ubuntu 12.10 installer from Ubuntu website. However, I find that it is not an iso image and I am unable to create a live CD (or DVD) from it. I could not find any help from Ubuntu website as well as internet. Please help. PS - My OS is Windows XP. The Ubuntu installer I downloaded from Ubuntu website is a zip file. I unzipped the file and it has a wubi file. PS - Thanks. I could create a Live CD. 1) First I tried to do it in my laptop which has Win 7. It was showing the Ubuntu installer as a zip file and could not able to burn it in to a DVD. At that time I raised the question. 2) Later I copied the installer in my desktop which has Win XP. There the installer is shown as an ISO file and I burnt it in to a DVD and created the Live CD. This is working nicely in the the desktop. 3) I tried to run the Live Cd in my Laptop which is an AMD machine, the system does not boot up. 4) In my office desktop which has Win 7 the Ubuntu installer is showing as an ISO file. My questions are as follows: A) Why the Ubuntu installer file is showing differently in different machines? B) Why the Live CD is not working in my Laptop?

• wubi dual-boot installation of ubuntu 12.04 on Windows 7 fails to boot

  I am trying to use the wubi installation process to create a Ubuntu 12.04 / Windows 7 dual boot setup on my Windows 7 machine (Dell Inspiron 17R). The installation initially works fine, and I am able to load Ubuntu several times after selecting it from the boot menu. However, when I boot into Windows 7 it seems to corrupt the Ubuntu boot process, because after running Windows 7, Ubuntu won't boot on the machine. It is still listed as an option in the boot menu, but when it is selected, the machine does one of the following: -hangs at the load-screen and says that Ubuntu is preparing to run for the first time (although it isn't the first time the OS has been loaded) -hangs with a black screen and does nothing I have uninstalled Ubuntu and then reinstalled it (using wubi) three times. Each time Ubuntu initially boots okay (including rebooting the laptop into Ubuntu several times.) However, whenever I switch over and boot into Windows 7 it breaks the Ubuntu installation. Windows 7 continues to boot and work fine without issues. I have successfully installed Ubuntu using wubi onto a different Windows 7 machine before without problems...it seems that there is something different about this laptop configuration. I am not sure how to debug the issue. I see no error messages during the Ubuntu boot process when it hangs and am not sure how to debug this.

  I have Lubuntu 11.10 installed on /dev/sda3, and Xubuntu 11.10 on /dev/sda5. A while ago, while being on Lubuntu, I made a mistake somewhere in creating a Live USB: by mistake, I installed a Live USB bootloader into /dev/sda3. This didn't result in any problem at that time. Today, I updated the kernel. I had to restart Lubuntu. In Grub, Lubuntu suddenly didn't appear anymore, and I booted automatically in Xubuntu. I tried to run update-grub and tried to use grub-customizer to get Lubuntu back in Grub, but this didn't work. I ran os-prober, but it doesn't show me Lubuntu. Then, I tried to add a new entry to /etc/grub.d/ on /dev/sda5 called 12_lubuntu. It contained the following: #!/bin/sh -e echo "Lubuntu" cat << EOF menuentry "Lubuntu" { set root=(hd0,3) linux /boot/vmlinuz initrd /boot/initrd.img } EOF After doing that, I ran update-grub and with grub-customizer, I wrote the Grub-configuration to MBR, that is: /dev/sda. Suddenly, Lubuntu appeared in Grub. I tried to launch it, but when doing this, the following message appeared: Error: You need to load the kernel first How can I make Grub start Lubuntu again?

• Computer has video artifacts after been exposed to rain

  My desktop now displays video artifacts after been exposed to rain. Only a very small amount of moisture went inside the case. The only place I noticed any water was on the CPU socket. I used a hair dryer and paper towels to wick any remaining moisture. When I boot the PC it loads it the OS, but there are large numbers of video artifacts. The artifacts appear symmetric if that helps. I am wondering what components I need to replace. I'd like to salvage what I can. My setup: AMD Athlon x3, Asus main board (AM2 socket), nVidia GT 430 PCIe, 8gb (4gb x2) DDR3

• What are "Missing thread recordng" erros when running fsck -fy?

  There is some error reported when I run Disk Utility and verify the root volume on my OS X MacBook. So I boot and CMD-S into the shell mode and run /sbin/fsck -fy. Errors are like: ** Checking catalog file. Missing thread record (id = ...) In correct number of thread records ** Checking catalog hierarchy. Invalid volume file count (It should be ... instead of ...) ** Repairing Volume Missing directory record (id = ...) I'd like to know what is the cause of the above errors? Hopefully I will be more careful in the future to prevent them from happening again. p.s. I am using a SSD and so I assume mechanical hard disk error is less likely. Thanks!

• Why does storage's performance change at various queue depths?

  I'm in the market for a storage upgrade for our servers. I'm looking at benchmarks of various PCIe SSD devices and in comparisons I see that IOPS change at various queue depths. How can that be and why is that happening? The way I understand things is: I have a device with maximum (theoretical) of 100k IOPS. If my workload consistently produces 100,001 IOPS, I'll have a queue depth of 1, am I correct? However, from what I see in benchmarks some devices run slower at lower queue depths, then speedup at depth of 4-64 and then slow down again at even larger depths. Isn't queue depths a property of OS(or perhaps storage controller), so why would that affect IOPS?

  Hi All, I have a MAC machine running MAC OS Version 10.6.6. I have added my mac machine to a domain controller (which runs Windows version of server) and allow users from domain controller to login. Because of our server migration, we removed the mac machine from old domain controller and added it to the new domain controller. Users in the old domain controller are copied to new domain controller. When I login into mac (which is added to new domain controller) with the domain controller user credentials, I was not able to access my desktop folders and any other folders in my users directory. It says "The folder Desktop can't be opened because you don't have permission its contents" Any idea why I was not able to access my home directory and how can I resolve this issue...!

  Just want to know everyone's experience and take on managing users/authentication on a multi-node db2 cluster with users groups. I have 17 apps in production (project based company, only 2 online apps), and some 30 users with 7 groups. prodsel - group that has select privilege on all tables produpdt - update group on selective tables (as required by the apps) proddel - delete prodins - insert permissions for the group Now what my company does is when an app uses certain user (called app1user), and needs select and insert privilege on a table, they 1. grant select and insert for prodsel, prodins respectively 2. add the user under those two groups... now this creates one to many relationship between user and privileges, and this app1user also gets select on other tables granted for the prodsel group. I know this is wrong. Before I explain, I need to know how this is done elsewhere. Please share your experiences, even if you use other Databases that uses OS level authentication.

  We have a windows file storage (don't ask) and now I want to rsync with the machine from Windows, Mac and Linux. So I installed freeSSHd (login shell is set to C:/cygwin64/bin/sh.exe), set up certificates and testing from Linux the test.dat has 0 bytes: ssh myuser@winmachinename "C:/cygwin64/bin/true.exe" > test.dat Even double checking with actual output works fine: ssh myuser@winmachinename "C:/cygwin64/bin/ls.exe" > test.dat Now, when I call rsync: rsync --progress -avz -e ssh myuser@winmachinename:/c/Users ~/test it fails with: protocol version mismatch -- is your shell clean? (see the rsync man page for an explanation) rsync error: protocol incompatibility (code 2) at compat.c(174) [Receiver=3.1.0] As far as reading the docs, this should not happen, when the first test is successful!? I am by now out of ideas - any recommendations how to debug this? • Windows 8 + Ubuntu dualboot problem - ubuntu does not load after windows updates

  I have installed Windows 8 64-bit and Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit in dualboot with EFI mode. Everything worked great. I could run Ubuntu or Windows without any problems. Only one little issue was that Windows locked NTFS partitions when I shut it down. When I clicked on restart button in Windows and started Ubuntu, partitions mounted successfully. But today ... I opened windows and downloaded all available updates. When I wanted to come back to Ubuntu I noticed that grub did not count down seconds to automatic start. After choosing Ubuntu option manually, the OS did not load. Just black screen with white underscore in the upper left corner. Windows is accessible always without such issues. Last time I solved it by reinstalling ubuntu but I dont want to do it each time windows downloads some updates. Have you ever meet such problem, or do you know how to solve it? EDIT Ubuntu boots, but it won't start. It ends on loading screen.

  I think that my printer stopped working with the switch to gnome 3 or unity. Yes I have tried 32 and 64 bit os's. Here is the driver In order to actually install the driver, you need to extract it and then open up terminal and type sudo and then a space. Then drag the script into the terminal window.   In windows 7 it is pretty simple to boot directly to a VHD, given that it also contains (or you are going to install) Windows 7 (or Vista/Server 2008). This installation is made possible I believe by the fact that from Vista on, Microsoft is using WIM (Windows Imaging Format) for OS installation. Is there a way to install XP to a VHD on Windows 7? Or is there a way to create a WIM image of the XP installer? Some have claimed to be able to do it in different blog posts, but there are no explanations of how to achieve it.

Now i decide to move it to be on my desktop PC, so I uninstall the windows from my laptop which I returned to the original OS came with the laptop (Vista Business) and insall windows 7 on my desktop PC. • Please recommend a patterns book for iOS development

  I've read several books on iOS development and Objective-C, however what a lot of them teach is how to work with interfaces and all contain the model inside the view controller, i.e. a UITableViewController based view will simply have an NSArray as it's model. I'm interested in what the best practices are for designing the structure of an application. Specifically I'm interested in best practices for the following: How to separate a model from the view controller. I think I know how to do this by simply replacing the NSArray style example with a specific model object, however what I do not know how to do is alert the view when the model changes. For example in .NET I would solve this by conforming to INotifyPropertyChanged and databinding, and similarly with Java I would use PropertyChangeListener. How to create a service model for my domain objects. For example I want to learn the best way to create a service for a hypothetical Widget object to manage an internal DB and also services for communicating with remote endpoints. I need to learn the best ways to do this in a way that interface components can subscribe to events such as widgetUpdated. These services should be singleton classes and some how dependency injected into model/controller objects. Books I've read so far are: Programming in Objective-C (4th Edition) Beginning iOS 5 Development: Exploring the iOS SDK The iOS 5 Developer's Cookbook: Expanded Electronic Edition: Essentials and Advanced Recipes for iOS Programmers Learn Objective-C on the Mac: For OS X and iOS I've also purchased the following updated books but not yet read them. The Core iOS 6 Developer's Cookbook (4th edition Programming in Objective-C (5th Edition) I come from a Java and C# background with 15 years experience, I understand that many of the ways I would do things in these languages may not fit to the ObjC way of developing applications. Any guidance on the topic is very much appreciated.

  The Oracle Database Appliance 2.4 patch is now available from My Oracle Support (MOS).  If you search for the Oracle Database Appliance 2.4.0.0.0 Kit under Patches it will display the newly uploaded bundles. The patch highlights include: Normal redundancy (double-mirroring) option providing 6TB of usable storage Enhanced Diagnostics - Trace File Analyzer and ODACHK Also, if you review the README, you may see content that says:        "The grid infrastructure and database patching, both are rolling upgradable. During our patching, we patch the node 1 first and when completed, we patch the node 2." I would like to clarify that the 'infrastructure' updates (OS, Firmware, ILOM, etc) will require a  short downtime of the ODA while it is applied.  When you update the grid infrastructure (--gi), the appliance manager verifies that the infrastructure was updated so you cannot just patch the GI without first updating the infrastructure.   I am trying to install a web service (written in FoxPro) onto a newly configured server. Part of the installation process was to install MSSoap 3.0 which seems to be successful. The server OS is Microsoft Server 2008 R2 (x64). I am now trying to create a virtual directoty at the command prompt using the SOAPVDIR.CMD script and I am getting the following error: CMD> SOAPVDIR.CMD CREATE CSLRosterService "C:\ROSTERWS" CMD> ERROR (0x80070002): Soap Toolkit 3 Isapi is not correctly registered. Does anyone know how I can correct this or what I am doing wrong?

The server is a unix server (dont know the OS or anything.. is there a way to find out? ). we also get a website associated with the server. There is a public_html folder. I uploaded with a test file with phpinfo() but the server didnt parse it (yes i had the right extension) . So im guessing PHP isnt installed. is there a way to see what "common" languages ARE installed?

My question would be: Are there many ways in which the above situation can be done and what can be done to protect this namespaces? (Either in the javascript itself or by some static code analysis tool)
