• SSIS: Building SQL databases on-the-fly using concatenated SQL scripts

  Over the years I have developed many techniques which help automate the whole SQL Server build process. In my current process, where I need to build entire OLAP data marts on-the-fly, I make regular use of a simple but very effective mechanism to concatenate all the SQL Scripts together from my SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio) projects. This proves invaluable because in two clicks I can redeploy an entire SQL Server database with all tables, views, stored procedures etc. Indeed, I can also use the concatenated SQL scripts with SSIS to build SQL Server databases on-the-fly. You may be surprised to learn that I often redeploy the database several times per day, or even several times per hour, during the development process. This is because the deployment errors are logged and you can quickly see where SQL Scripts have object dependency errors. For example, after changing a table structure you may have forgotten to change any related views. The deployment log immediately points out all the objects which failed to build so you can fix and redeploy the database very quickly. The alternative approach (i.e. doing changes in the database directly using the SSMS UI) would require you to check all dependent objects before making changes. The chances are that you will miss something and wonder why your app returns the wrong data – a common problem caused by changing a table without re-creating dependent views. Using SQL Projects in SSMS A great many developers fail to make use of SQL Projects in SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio). To me they are invaluable way of organizing your SQL Scripts. The screenshot below shows a typical SSMS solution made up of several projects – one project for tables, another for views etc. The key point is that the projects naturally fall into the right order in file system because of the project name. The number in the folder or file name ensures that the projects the SQL scripts are concatenated together in the order that they need to be executed. Hence the script filenames start with 100, 110 etc. Concatenating SQL Scripts To concatenate the SQL Scripts together into one file, I use notepad.exe to create a simple batch file (see example screenshot) which uses the TYPE command to write the content of the SQL Script files into a combined file. As the SQL Scripts are in several folders, I simply use several TYPE command multiple times and append the output together. If you are unfamiliar with batch files, you may not know that the angled bracket (>) means write output of the program into a file. Two angled brackets (>>) means append output of this program into a file. So the command-line DIR > filelist.txt would write the content of the DIR command into a file called filelist.txt. In the example shown above, the concatenated file is called SB_DDS.sql If, like me you place the concatenated file under source code control, then the source code control system will change the file's attribute to "read-only" which in turn would cause the TYPE command to fail. The ATTRIB command can be used to remove the read-only flag. Using SQLCmd to execute the concatenated file Now that the SQL Scripts are all in one big file, we can execute the script against a database using SQLCmd using another batch file as shown below: SQLCmd has numerous options, but the script shown above simply executes the SS_DDS.sql file against the SB_DDS_DB database on the local machine and logs the errors to a file called SB_DDS.log. So after executing the batch file you can simply check the error log to see if your database built without a hitch. If you have errors, then simply fix the source files, re-create the concatenated file and re-run the SQLCmd to rebuild the database. This two click operation allows you to quickly identify and fix errors in your entire database definition.Using SSIS to execute the concatenated file To execute the concatenated SQL script using SSIS, you simply drop an Execute SQL task into your package and set the database connection as normal and then select File Connection as the SQLSourceType (as shown below). Create a file connection to your concatenated SQL script and you are ready to go.   Tips and TricksAdd a new-line at end of every fileThe most common problem encountered with this approach is that the GO statement on the last line of one file is placed on the same line as the comment at the top of the next file by the TYPE command. The easy fix to this is to ensure all your files have a new-line at the end.Remove all USE database statementsThe SQLCmd identifies which database the script should be run against.  So you should remove all USE database commands from your scripts - otherwise you may get unintentional side effects!!Do the Create Database separatelyIf you are using SSIS to create the database as well as create the objects and populate the database, then invoke the CREATE DATABASE command against the master database using a separate package before calling the package that executes the concatenated SQL script.

• MSCC: Career & IT Fair 2014

  Already a couple of weeks ago, I've been addressed by Ibraahim and Yunus to see whether it would be interesting to participate in the 1st Career & IT Fair organised by the UoM Computer Club. Well, luckily we met at the Global Windows Azure Bootcamp and I wasn't too sure whether it would be possible for me to attend after all. The main reason is given because of work demand and furthermore due to the fact that the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community currently has no advertising material at all. Here's the brief statement of the event: "The UOM Students' Computer Club in collaboration with the UOM Students' Union and UOM CSE Department is organising a 'Career & IT Fair' on the 23rd and 24th April 2014. This event has for objective to provide a platform to tertiary students, secondary students as well as vocational students, the opportunity to meet job recruiters." Luckily, I was reminded that the 23rd is a Wednesday, and therefore I decided that it might be interesting to move our weekly Code & Coffee session to the university and hence be able to attend the career fair. As it turned out it was a great choice and thankfully Pritvi, Nadim as well as Ishwon volunteered to be around at the "community booth". Thankfully, the computer club gave us - the MSCC and the LUGM - one of their spaces in the lobby area of the Paul Octave Wiéhé Auditorium. My impression about the event Very well and professionally organised. Seriously, the lads over at the UoM Computer Club did a great job in organising their 2 days event, and felt very comfortable at any time. Actually, it was kind of amusing to some of the members constantly running around and checking everything. Even though that the whole process went smooth and easy off the hand. There were a couple of interesting pieces of information and announcements during the opening ceremony. For example, the Computer Science faculty is a very young one and has been initiated back in 1988 only - just by 4 staff members at that time. Now, after 25 years they have achieved quite a lot and there are currently 1.000+ active students attending the numerous lectures and courses. But there is no room to rest on previous achievements, and I was kind of surprised to hear that there are plans to extend the campus, and offer new lectures in the fields of nanotechnology, big data handling, and - crossing fingers - the introduction and establishment of a space control centre. Mauritius is already part of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and hopefully there will be more activities into that direction in the near future. Community - Awareness and collaboration As stated earlier, I could only spent one morning but luckily other members of the MSCC and the LUGM stayed during the whole two days and provided answers to any interested person. As for me, I took the opportunity to get in touch with the other companies in the lobby. Mainly, to create some awareness about our IT communities but also to see whether there might be options for future engagement in common activities, too. So far, I was able to speak to representatives of the following companies: ACCA Mauritius Business at Work Infomil LinkByNet Microsoft Indian Ocean Islands & French Pacific Spherinity Training Institute Spoon Consulting Ltd. State Informatics Ltd. Unfortunately, I only had a quick chat with an HR representative of LinkByNet but I fully count on our MSCC members like Nitin or LUGM member Ronny to spread our intentions over there.  So far, all of the representatives were really interested in our concepts and activities and I'm currently catching up with an introduction flyer for the MSCC that I'm going to send out to all those contacts via mail. It would be great to have more craftsmen as well as professional support on board. Some pictures from the event MSCC: Fantastic outlook for the near future. • TFS vs. Star Team comparison

  I have a sales call today in which the person that I am talking to is interested in what TFS would give them over Star Team, The first thing I believe that I can say is that TFS is cheaper! Especially if you are doing MSFT development already and your team members have MSDN subscriptions as the CALs for TFS are covered in the MSDN subscription. The other thing that I noticed about Star Team was all of the references to ‘readiness’ and ‘integration’. While that is great, that means that other tools will be needed to provide the features that are already bundled with TFS like, SharePoint integration, as well as Analysis Services and Reporting Services to provide visibility on the web with reports on project health, and team velocity. • Moving from local machine to group web development environment

  I'm a freelancer who currently creates websites locally using something like MAMP to test websites locally before pushing them live with FTP. I'm looking at taking on my first employee, and I would need to be able to work on websites with them simultaneously. Can anyone explain or provide links to some good documentation on team workflow, or some key phrases I should be googling to get started on my set up? Unlike a lot of the stackoverflow community I've never worked in a dev team, large or small as I'm self taught so just need to know where to start. At present I'm thinking I need an extra computer to use as a server, then use Git or some such to version control files on that computer, as well as installing apache on it so it can be viewed by any computers in my current home network. Is this heading down the right track?

• cpu usage and near to crash when i plug in the power cable

  i have had this problem since i installed ubuntu 12.4 on my laptop (on all of distro i have this problem execpt of backtrack) my problem is when i start my linux while it connect to power source there is no problem everything works fine . but when i disconnect and wants to work with battery it crash i mean everything work tooooo slowly and my cpu usage goes to 100 ... it happen too when i start my linux with battery and want to connect the power source to it .... it happens again . i updated my distro and now on i have 12.10 on my laptop but it has this problem . my lap top is hp probook 4520s my graphic card is ati radeon 530 v and i installed catalyst control center on my lap top and it works fine but the only problem is that what i said ...is it relate to my graphic card ???

• Can WinRT really be used at just the boundaries?

  Microsoft (chiefly, Herb Sutter) recommends when using WinRT with C++/CX to keep WinRT at the boundaries of the application and keep the core of the application written in standard ISO C++. I've been writing an application which I would like to leave portable, so my core functionality was written in standard C++, and I am now attempting to write a Metro-style front end for it using C++/CX. I've had a bit of a problem with this approach, however. For example, if I want to push a vector of user-defined C++ types to a XAML ListView control, I have to wrap my user-defined type in a WinRT ref/value type for it to be stored in a Vector^. With this approach, I'm inevitably left with wrapping a large portion of my C++ classes with WinRT classes. This is the first time I've tried to write a portable native application in C++. Is it really practical to keep WinRT along the boundaries like this? How else could this type of portable core with a platform-specific boundary be handled?

• Kinetic Scroll in Maverick

  I have Sony VAIO FW 230J laptop. I was using Lucid and upgraded my system to Maverick beta in September 2010. Although there were few issues with beta release on my system although I did not felt myself in any deadlock. The most notable experience on my ubuntu was the smooth and kinetic scrolling and very sensitive touch pad experience with finer control that was oddly normal in previous releases and even on windows 7 currently. Definitely this release of ubuntu is improved for touch UI experience. I believe that this is magic of 10.10. For my official system I waited until the final release was out. After installing (upgrading) official system to Maverick I am not feeling the same smooth and kinetic scroll experience. My laptop has Graphics: Intel DMA-X4500MHD while my official desktop has Graphics: Intel DMA-X4500HD Do I need to install or update some software package to have similar kinetic scroll experience?

  For example, Google.com [1] The SOA email is : dns-admin.google.com The contact is: Administrative Contact: DNS Admin Google Inc. dns-admin.google.com As you can see, both are using google.com, I am thinking it is safe to use the same domain, i.e. consider the case you lost control of the domain, you can receive email also. (Of course Google is a public company so the chance is low, but might occur for smaller company that their domain might be stolen..) • How can I unit test a class which requires a web service call?

  I'm trying to test a class which calls some Hadoop web services. The code is pretty much of the form: method() { ...use Jersey client to create WebResource... ...make request... ...do something with response... } e.g. there is a create directory method, a create folder method etc. Given that the code is dealing with an external web service that I don't have control over, how can I unit test this? I could try and mock the web service client/responses but that breaks the guideline I've seen a lot recently: "Don't mock objects you don't own". I could set up a dummy web service implementation - would that still constitute a "unit test" or would it then be an integration test? Is it just not possible to unit test at this low a level - how would a TDD practitioner go about this?

One part of the task is rendering of the virtual world in a browser (3D or pseudo-3D). • Managing multiple Adwords accounts from one Google account

  I have a Gmail account linked to numerous Analytics accounts, and a couple of Adwords accounts - that is, I can track stats from a dozen or so sites, and have administration rights for a couple of Adwords campaigns. However, a client has already set-up their Adwords account and has invited me help administer their campaign. However, when I try to accept, I get the folowing error: The Google Account xxx already has access to an AdWords account (Customer ID: ). As many have discovered, for some reason Google won't let an account that already owns an Adwords campaign, to join another account. However, I wondering if there is any workaround for this? Temporarily, I'm using a separate Gmail account for this, but what is the longer term solution. Going forwards, sometimes clients will be happy from me to 'host' their campaigns (but providing them with access), but I'm equally sure that many will want to retain greater control. Surely there must be a better way than creating an additional Gmail account for each client? How do web/SEO agencies handle this?

• What are unique aspects of a software Lifecycle of an attack/tool on a software vulnerability?

  At my local university, there is a small student computing club of about 20 students. The club has several small teams with specific areas of focus, such as mobile development, robotics, game development, and hacking / security. I am introducing some basic agile development concepts to a couple of the teams, such as user stories, estimating complexity of tasks, and continuous integration for version control and automated builds/testing. I am familiar with some basic development life-cycles, such as waterfall, spiral, RUP, agile, etc., but I am wondering if there is such a thing as a software development life-cycle for hacking / breaching security. Surely, hackers are writing computer code, but what is the life-cycle of that code? I don't think that they would be too concerned with maintenance, as once the breach has been found and patched, the code that exploited that breach is useless. I imagine the life-cycle would be something like: Find gap in security Exploit gap in security Procure payload Utilize payload What kind of differences (if any) are there for the development life-cycle of software when the purpose of the product is to breach security?

  I'm in the process of building a game in which virtual items can be obtained either by in-game play (defeating enemies, gaining levels), or by purchasing "packs" via microtransactions. Looking at an existing example like Duels.com's item packs, it looks like a lot of thought went into their implementation, including: Setting clear player expectations as to what can be obtained in the pack Limiting pack supply to increase demand and control inflation Are there other considerations that should be taken into account? For example, should the contents of the packs be pre-generated to guarantee the advertised drop rates, or is each drop rate just a random chance, and you could end up with higher or lower supply?

• Infrastructure and Platform As A Service in Private Cloud at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

  Scientists at the National Ignition Facility (NIF)— the world’s largest laser, at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)— need research environment that requires re-creating the physical environment and conditions that exist inside the sun. They have built private cloud infrastructure using Oracle VM and Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c to provision such an environment for research.  Tim Frazier of LLNL joined the "Managing Your Private Cloud With Oracle Enterprise Manager' session at Oracle Open World 2012 and discussed how the latest features in Oracle VM and Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c enables them to accelerate application provisioning in their private cloud. He also talked about how to increase service delivery agility, improve standardized roll outs, and do proactive management to gain total control of the private cloud environment. He also presented at the "Scene and Be Heard Theater" at Oracle OpenWorld 2012 and shared a lot of good information about his project and what they are doing in their private cloud environment. • Develop website locally and push updates on Remote Server using Git

  Together with a friend we are looking to develop a website (using Symfony2). We are on a Shared Hosting with SSH access. Below is the environment we'd like to setup: * Use git as Version Control (we are new to Git) * Share the tasks and develop on our local machines * Push the updates onto the remote server Here's our initial thoughts on how to do it (assuming Git is already running both locally and remotely): * Install Symfony on the Remote Server (basic setup) * Get a clone (using Git) of the project locally * Develop project locally and push updates (using Git) on the remote server Does this approach make sense, if not, any recommendations?   at the moment i'm running ubuntu server 12.04 on top of a virtual box running as service in M$ w7x64, I've configured the shares on fstab with E /media/E vboxsf auto,rw,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 the mount is ok drwxrwxrwx 1 knoker knoker 16384 Sep 1 20:02 E but i cant change the permissions inside of /media/E ,chmod runs but doesn't do nothing. on a specific case /media/E/Docs/Downloads i have dr-xr-xr-x 1 knoker knoker 163840 Sep 1 19:30 Downloads and since i cant seem to be able to change from linux i tried it on the windows, and all users listed have full control... • lubuntu - Sound card detected but no sound

  I installed Lubuntu 12.10 on my old laptop (Sharp Mebius PC-MR80J), but sound does not work. Here are things I tried. aplay -l does not output anything. When I run alsamixer, I see only one bar that says "Beep". I installed pavucontrol, pulseaudio, pulseaudio-utils and libgtk-3-0 and checked output devices, but I only see "Dummy ouput" and there is no hardware output devices. cat /proc/asound/cards returns the following. 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel HDA Intel at 0xfeb38000 irq 40 cat /proc/asound/devices outputs the following. 1: : sequencer 2: [ 0- 1]: hardware dependent 3: [ 0- 0]: hardware dependent 4: [ 0] : control 33: : timer The laptop was running Windows XP before and sound (both input and outpu) was working. What can I do now?

• css equivalent of table-row [closed]

  I am trying to shift my style away from using tables to control formatting, but I haven't seen a simple css solution that does exactly the same thing as <table><tr><td>aribitrary-html-A</td><td>aribitrary-html-A</td></tr><table> All I want is to make sure aribitrary-html-A and aribitrary-html-B are aligned horizontally. I have tried various CSS concoctions using display: inline, clear: none, and float: left but they all have unwanted side-effects of moving my content around, while the table-tr solution just does what I want, regardless of what's in the arbitrary HTML, and regardless of what is in HTML that contains my table. Am I missing something?

• Can a programmer get too smart for their own good?

  The more I learn about programming, the more things I see that could be improved by a great deal. Often, a companies process management is total SWAG or they have Frames based websites written recently, .NET 1.1 based code, no separation of concerns, poor quality control...I could go on and on and on... Projects can succeed, but there tends to be so much waste I am amazed at how much time and money a company can throw away. I've seen it happen at several companies. So is it that ignorance truly is bliss? UPDATE Question "How is it that top developers (I don't mean like Jon Skeet level, I mean guys who are dedicated enough to hit a forum and try for self-improvement) even want to code anymore after they see the often insurmountable sociological and technical problems they are told to fix, but then scolded for doing so? "

• No cache and Google AdSense performance

  I'm developing a page where I need to avoid JavaScript caching by browser. I've added this header: <?php header('Cache-Control: no-cache, no-store, must-revalidate'); header('Pragma: no-cache'); header('Expires: 0'); ?> After this, browsers didn't cache more JavaScript sorting out the issue, but in the same time I noticed a drop in Google AdSense RPM. Then I removed the added code and now Google AdSense RPM is reaching again a good value. So, how could I avoid JavaScript caching without meddle with AdSense performance?
