• Handling DataGrid.SelectedItems in an MVVM-friendly manner

  An interesting question from one of the MVVM Light users today: Is there an MVVM-friendly way to get a DataGrid’s SelectedItems into the ViewModel? The issue there is as old as the DataGrid (that’s not very old but still): SelectedItem (singular) is a DependencyProperty and can be databound to a property in the ViewModel. SelectedItems (plural) is not a DependencyProperty. Thankfully the answer is very simple: Use EventToCommand to call a Command in the ViewModel, and pass the SelectedItems collection as parameter. Steve shared some insights around Windows 8: 4 million customers upgraded to Windows 8 over the weekend since the October 26 release (so in 3 days only!). Focus on sharing code between Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. Syncing everything through SkyDrive Xbox Music free streaming and Xbox Smart Glass.   I am building a deferred rendering engine and I have a question. The article I took the sample code from suggested computing screen position of the pixel as follows: VertexShaderFunction() { ... output.Position = mul(worldViewProj, input.Position); output.ScreenPosition = output.Position; } PixelShaderFunction() { input.ScreenPosition.xy /= input.ScreenPosition.w; float2 TexCoord = 0.5f * (float2(input.ScreenPosition.x,-input.ScreenPosition.y) + 1); ... } The question is what if I compute the position in the vertex shader (which should optimize the performance as VSF is launched significantly less number of times than PSF) would I get the per-vertex lighting insted. Here is how I want to do this: VertexShaderFunction() { ... output.Position = mul(worldViewProj, input.Position); output.ScreenPosition.xy = output.Position / output.Position.w; } PixelShaderFunction() { float2 TexCoord = 0.5f * (float2(input.ScreenPosition.x,-input.ScreenPosition.y) + 1); ... } What exactly happens with the data I pass from VS to PS? How exactly is it interpolated? Will it give me the right per-pixel result in this case? I tried launching the game both ways and saw no visual difference. Is my assumption right? Thanks. P.S. I am optimizing the point light shader, so I actually pass a sphere geometry into the VS.

• Estimating cost of labor for a controlled experiment

  Let's say you are a software engineering researcher and you are designing a controlled experiment to compare two software technologies or techniques (e.g., TDD vs. non-TDD, Python vs. Go) with respect to some qualities of interest (e.g., quality of resulting code, programmer productivity). According to your study design, participants will work alone to implement a non-trivial software system. You estimate it should take about six months for a single programmer to complete the task. You also estimate via power analysis that you will need around sixty study participants to obtain statistically significant results, assuming the technologies actually do yield different outcomes. To maximize external validity, you want to use professional programmers as study participants. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to find professional programmers who can volunteer for several months to work full-time on implementing a software system. You decide to go the simplest route and contract with a large IT consulting firm to obtain access to programmers to participate in the study. What is a reasonable estimate of the cost range, per person-month, for the programming labor? Assume you are constrained to work with a U.S.-based firm, but it doesn't matter where in the U.S. the firm itself or the programmers or located. Note: I'm looking for a reasonable order-of-magnitude range suitable for back-of-the-envelope calculations so that when people say "Why doesn't somebody just do a study to measure X", I can say, "Because running that study properly would cost $Y", and have a reasonable argument for the value of $Y.

  I am trying to make a simple Ubuntu Touch web application with Qt Creator. I have set up a new project according to the tutorial and committed the files to Bazaar. I have set a url instead of the default index.htm in the qml file of the project. • Windows Azure Database (SQL Azure) Development Tip

  When you create something in the cloud, it's real, and you're charged for it. There are free offerings, and you even get free resources with your Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscription, but there are limits within those. Creating a 1 GB database - even with nothing in it - is a 1 GB Database. If you create it, drop it, and create it again 2 minutes later, that's 2 GB of space you've used for the month. Wait - how do I develop in this kind of situation? With Windows Azure, you can simply install the free Software Development Kit (SDK) and develop your entire application for free - you need never even log in to Windows Azure to code. Once you're done, you simply deploy the app and you start making money from the application as you're paying for it. Windows Azure Databases (The Artist Formerly Known As SQL Azure) is a bit different. It's not emulated in the SDK - because it doesn't have to be. It's just SQL Server, with some differences in feature set. To develop in this environment, you can use SQL Server, any edition. Be aware of the feature differences, of course, but just develop away - even in the free "Express" or LocalDB flavors - and then right-click in SQL Server Management Studio to script objects. Script the database, but change the "Advanced" selection to the Engine Type of "SQL Azure". Bing. Although most all T-SQL ports directly, one thing to keep in mind is that you need a Clustered Index on every table. Often the Primary Key (PK) is a good choice for that.

• Start Debugging in Visual Studio

  Every developer is familiar with hitting F5 and debugging their application, which starts their app with the Visual Studio debugger attached from the start (instead of attaching later). This is one way to achieve step 1 of the Live Debugging process. Hitting F5, F11, Ctrl+F10 and the other ways to start the process under the debugger is covered in this MSDN "How To". The way you configure the debugging experience, before you hit F5, is by selecting the "Project" and then the "Properties" menu (Alt+F7 on my keyboard bindings). Dependent on your project type there are different options, but if you browse to the Debug (or Debugging) node in the properties page you'll have a way to select local or remote machine debugging, what debug engines to use, command line arguments to use during debugging etc. Currently the .NET and C++ project systems are different, but one would hope that one day they would be unified to use the same mechanism and UI (I don't work on that product team so I have no knowledge of whether that is a goal or if it will ever happen). Personally I like the C++ one better, here is what it looks like (and it is described on this MSDN page): If you were following along in the "Attach to Process" blog post, the equivalent to the "Select Code Type" dialog is the "Debugger Type" dropdown: that is how you change the debug engine. Some of the debugger properties options appear on the standard toolbar in VS. With Visual Studio 11, the Debug Type option has been added to the toolbar If you don't see that in your installation, customize the toolbar to show it - VS 11 tends to be conservative in what you see by default, especially for the non-C++ Visual Studio profiles. • Functional Methods on Collections

  I'm learning Scala and am a little bewildered by all the methods (higher-order functions) available on the collections. Which ones produce more results than the original collection, which ones produce less, and which are most appropriate for a given problem? Though I'm studying Scala, I think this would pertain to most modern functional languages (Clojure, Haskell) and also to Java 8 which introduces these methods on Java collections. Specifically, right now I'm wondering about map with filter vs. fold/reduce. I was delighted that using foldRight() can yield the same result as a map(...).filter(...) with only one traversal of the underlying collection. But a friend pointed out that foldRight() may force sequential processing while map() is friendlier to being processed by multiple processors in parallel. Maybe this is why mapReduce() is so popular? More generally, I'm still sometimes surprised when I chain several of these methods together to get back a List(List()) or to pass a List(List()) and get back just a List(). For instance, when would I use: collection.map(a => a.map(b => ...)) vs. collection.map(a => ...).map(b => ...) The for/yield command does nothing to help this confusion. Am I asking about the difference between a "fold" and "unfold" operation? Am I trying to jam too many questions into one? I think there may be an underlying concept that, if I understood it, might answer all these questions, or at least tie the answers together.

• I want to build a Virtual Machine, are there any good references?

  I'm looking to build a Virtual Machine as a platform independent way to run some game code (essentially scripting). The Virtual Machines that I'm aware of in games are rather old: Infocom's Z-Machine, LucasArts' SCUMM, id Software's Quake 3. As a .net Developer, I'm familiar with the CLR and looked into the CIL Instructions to get an overview of what you actually implement on a VM Level (vs. the language level). I've also dabbled a bit in 6502 Assembler during the last year. The thing is, now that I want¹ to implement one, I need to dig a bit deeper. I know that there are stack based and register based VMs, but I don't really know which one is better at what and if there are more or hybrid approaches. I need to deal with memory management, decide which low level types are part of the VM and need to understand why stuff like ldstr works the way it does. My only reference book (apart from the Z-Machine stuff) is the CLI Annotated Standard, but I wonder if there is a better, more general/fundamental lecture for VMs? Basically something like the Dragon Book, but for VMs? I'm aware of Donald Knuth's Art of Computer Programming which uses a register-based VM, but I'm not sure how applicable that series still is, especially since it's still unfinished? Clarification: The goal is to build a specialized VM. For example, Infocom's Z-Machine contains OpCodes for setting the Background Color or playing a sound. So I need to figure out how much goes into the VM as OpCodes vs. the compiler that takes a script (language TBD) and generates the bytecode from it, but for that I need to understand what I'm really doing. ¹ I know, modern technology would allow me to just interpret a high level scripting language on the fly. But where is the fun in that? :) It's also a bit hard to google because Virtual Machines is nowadays often associated with VMWare-type OS Virtualization...

• Free Team Foundation Service a Boon for Play Projects

  My ‘jump in and sink or swim’ learning style leads me to create dozens of unbillable ‘play’ projects in Visual Studio 2012.  For example, I’m currently learning to customize the powerful auction/fixed price/classifieds software called AuctionWorx Enterprise.  I make stupid mistakes as I grasp a new API and configure projects. It’s frustrating to go down a rat hole and discover the VS IDE’s Undo doesn’t reach back to a working build from the previous weekend. Enter Visual Studio’s Free Team Foundation Service.  Put your play projects into the free source control and check in (or shelve) a snapshot before embarking on something risky. (I already use Discount ASP.NET’s Team Foundation Server hosting for client projects so there’s zero TFS/VS learning curve for me and first class GUI support.) TFS is free right now for teams of five or fewer. I’m not naive enough to expect ‘free’ to last forever. So, it’ll be interesting to see how much Microsoft intends to charge in 2013 for TFS. In the meantime, why not grab some free source code storage? BTW, it’s weird to realize that Microsoft is backing up my junky little playtime code on three physically-distinct servers every day - and taking incremental backups every hour.

  Is the difference between sudo cmd and gksu cmd, the same as the difference between starting a shell with sudo -i and sudo -s? ... or put another way, Is sudo cmd the same as sudo -i cmd and gksu cmd the same as sudo -s cmd? EDIT: Based on what I read on an Ubuntu Documentation Page where it says: You should never use normal sudo to start graphical applications as root. You should use gksudo (kdesudo on Kubuntu) to run such programs. gksudo sets HOME=~root, and copies .Xauthority to a tmp directory. This prevents files in your home directory becoming owned by root. (AFAICT, this is all that's special about the environment of the started process with gksudo vs. sudo). The "AFAICT" doen't really give me full confidence that there is nothing more to it. (..a belated UPDATE: I tested his commemnt today (2 months later) about: "This prevents files in your home directory becoming owned by root." All files I created via sudo/gksu were all owned by "root", and the group was "root".) I've read parts of the info sudo and noticed the -i and -s seem to be doing the same thing as the AFAICT environment issue... but I hit overload.. so I've asked my question here. PS.. My question is not about sudo vs gksu .. It is more about: Is gksu the same as sudo -s .. and if not, how do they differ?

  One of the 6 sessions I and Mikael Nitell is running on MSDN Live 2010 here in Norway is about Code Quality, and part of that session goes through the use of Code Contracts and Pex.  Both fantastic tools ! They can be used togethers, but are also completely independent from each other, and can be used as a single Code Contracts  has to downloaded separately from VS 2010 (works also on VS 2008).   Start looking at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/devlabs/dd491992.aspx . This download is a free download.   Code Contracts originates form the ideas of Bertrand Meyer – Design by Contract, take a look here. Pex is found on the MSDN Subscription download, so it requires an active MSDN Subscription. Start to get it from here http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/pex/downloads.aspx .  The current version as of 14.4.10 is 0.9, which works with the 2010 RC.  A new version is due this week.  Pex is a tool to generate unit tests, and does this very intelligently.  Perfect to make tests for legacy code, but also to make sure you get all paths tested.  See the Reference information and project startup information.

• Which tools should be used for data migration between environments?

  Ø  With the Oracle Utilities Application Framework based products there are a number of tools provided that can be used to transfer data from one environment to another. Ø  There are three main tools that implementations use: §  ConfigLab - A configurable copy facility is metadata aware and therefore understands the relationships between objects and by invoking the relevant maintenance objects validates the data copied. This utility uses the object validation to help ensure data integrity. Basically it is a set of configuration tables and a set of batch jobs to perform the migration of data. §  Bundling - A configurable release management tool that allows exporting of Advanced Configuration Environment based objects (business services, business objects, UI Maps etc) from one environment to another. §  Blueprint - An Oracle Utilities Software Development Kit (SDK) based tool to import metadata from the development environment to your initial testing environment. The utility is command line based and basically uses a text based configuration file to drive the utility on the source and target sides. Ø  Each tool has a role in an implementation but you must be careful to use the right tool for the right job within an implementation. The suggestions are as follows: §  Only use the Blueprint tool for migrating data from your development platform to your initial test environment. The blueprint tool is not designed to move large amounts of data and certainly is risky, if not used correctly, and can potentially break the integrity of your data. §  The SDK provides the configuration data that it is used for (mainly meta-data). This should not be extended as, while it can perform data migration on any data, it is not efficient and risky for certain types of configuration data. It’s obvious, that VS can’t address more than 2Gb of RAM, and when that limit is over, build process is fail. OS on my PC is Win x64,  so I “charge” devenv.exe by using editbin.exe utility – in the VS Command prompt I run following: editbin "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" /LARGEADDRESSAWARE This command edits the image to indicate that the application can handle addresses larger than 2 gigabytes. After that FBX file successfully built! Of course, you must put proper path to devenv.exe, depend on your installation path. If you are on Win x86, you need to do additional action – more info here.   P.S.: although now you can build a bigger files, than usual, keep in mind, that XNA have some restrictions on vertex buffer size etc., depend on your current XNA project profile (Reach or HiDef). And if your model’s vertexbuffer size more than 64Mb (with Reach profile), that model can’t be built and raise an error.

• OWB 11gR2 &ndash; JDBC Helper Utility

  One of the common queries when importing the tables via JDBC with 11gR2 is determining why the import wizard doesn’t display the tables that you think it should. I often just use the script below to dump out the schemas, tables and columns that the JDBC driver is returning. This is useful in a few areas; to figure out what the schema name is returned to double check with the schema name you have used in the location (this is used in the DatabaseMetaData.getTables API call within the basic JDBC metadata import. to figure out the data types returned from the JDBC driver when you see columns skipped because of no datatype supported messages. also…I can do it via scripting and don’t need to recompile classes and stuff :-) Edit the tcl script and set the JDBC driver, the connection URL and the username and password (they are at the bottom of the script), the script then calls a basic tcl procedure which writes to standard out the schemas, tables and columns with various properties. For example I executed it using the XML JDBC driver from ODI over a simple customers XML file and it writes the following metadata; You can add more details as you need and execute from the OMBPlus panel within OWB.
