• Can't connect remotely to Windows Server 2008 R2

  I have a new Dell R710 server running Windows Server 2008 R2. I one of it's 4 nic's set up and the rest are not being used. I have successfully given it an ip address, network mask, and dns servers. I can ping and resolve this machine from anywhere else in the network. However, when I try to connect to it via RDP it does several things: 1) it might just outright refuse me with the message, "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again." 2) it might connect me and let me chose the account I would like to log on as... but when you select an account then you receive the same message as in #1 3) it might actually allow you to connect but only for about 1 minute and then you receive the same message and it closes your session. I have configured the firewall service to allow for RDP over the domain network connection. This didn't have any noticible effect. I have now disabled the firewall for all 3 networks and have even stopped the Windows Firewall service. I am still having the same issue. I am new to Server 2008 R2 and things are very different. Please give me any advice you can on how to resolve this issue and/or any other gotchas that are sure to come my way. The 2003 - 2008 learning curve seems steep. Thanks

• Windows XP Boot Issue - Diagnosing A Hard Drive Failure

  My five-year-old HP desktop running Windows XP SP3 wouldn't boot from the hard drive yesterday afternoon. I would see the boot sequence begin, then nothing but a black screen. Fortunately, I had just done an Acronis backup to my external drive in the morning, and I have a bootable USB key. I put the USB key into the drive, powered up the machine, and put the USB key first in line in the boot sequence. Voila! My machine came alive. But now I'm confused as to what the problem is and what to do next. I assumed that my hard drive was toast. But now that the machine is alive I can see files on my C: drive that have changes I made just yesterday. Clearly the drive is not dead. Here are my questions: What could explain my inability to boot from the hard drive? What would a remedy be? What's my best course of action? Should I replace the hard drive with a new one? If I replace the hard drive, do I reinstall the OS and apply the backup I did yesterday? If I decide that re-installing Windows XP makes no sense, how do I get back the Acronis backup that I did yesterday? I don't want to lose that. UPDATE: I just learned one more key fact. I'm having some work done on my house. I neglected to shut my machine down before the contractor came. My wife said he shut down the power to do some work on a circuit and then powered the house back up. I have a surge protector, but is it possible that cycling the power did some damage?

• Printing on Windows 8 with PDF viewer (Adobe Reader) from network

  i have a problem with the Adobe Reader 8, but the problem seems to be equally bad with other pdf viewers. Here is the configuration: My PDF viewer is located on network drive "Z:" which is the network adress \dgs-main\progs. I tried to start the adobe reader from here - \\dgs-main\progs\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe and open the PDF from here - C:\Users\ServiceDesk\AppData\Local\Temp\GeneratedPDF.pdf The problem is as follows, if i open the PDF with a local PDF viewer everything works fine and i can print the document. If i open the PDF with the Network PDF viewer then it opens, but printing is impossible. The error message states: "Unable to start print job. Is printer available?" As mentioned above, it works with a local pdf viewer. In both cases i use the same printer. The Printer is a network printer but even with a local printer it fails. The error occurs only on Windows 8 machines. On windows 7 it works fine. I Hope somebody can tell me what the problem is. Thanks in advance and have a fine day.

• replacing the default console emulator under Windows XP

  How can I replace the default program providing console windows under Windows XP? I know of alternative programs, and I have a shortcut to start cmd.exe in Console2. But now I want console applications to start in Console2 rather than the default console program, even when I have no control over the program that starts the console application. (I.e. a non-console program starts consoleapp.exe, and I can't change it to start Console2 instead, but I still want the application to be started inside a new instance of Console2.) (Note that I want to replace the console itself, that is, the window in which console (i.e. text mode) applications run. And I must be able to run arbitrary, unmodified console applications: a substitute for a specific console program such as Cmd won't do me any good.) EDIT: So what I'm after is a CSRSS replacement, which leads to OT: I want to know when Microsoft is going to make a decent CSRSS replacement. Not being able to adjust the width of a "terminal" by resizing the window is a complete joke. Go download the ISE already. (It's included in Win7/2008R2.) But as far as I understand this ISE is an environment for Powershell, not a general console emulator.

  In our active directory we deploy a policy to our clients where the personal directory (My documents) is redirected to a file server of ours \server\share\username\Documents In older systems everything worked fine. in Windows 7 some users are experimenting the following symptoms: * The Documents library is EMPTY * Where the documents library should be shown in Explorer an empty white icon is displayed. No caption. * Right clicking in the Documents library to edit the folders that are part of the libraries brings the dialog up. However, that dialog is unusable. No folder is present there and clicking Add folder does nothing. * Deleting the library and auto-creating it doesn't solve the problem * The shared directory can be accessed via UNC paths and it can be mounted as a shared drive as well. The library is still broken. * The shared drives are on a W2008 indexed server... * Using the Windows Library tool utility doesn't solve the problem. What can the cause of this problem be and how can this be solved?

• Cannot connect to windows server by name over vpn connection

  I have a rented dedicated windows server on a public ip that is acting as a SQL Server and VPN server. I need to connect to this server via computer name to get replication in place. I cannot use an ip address due to this issue: So, due to this, we are going the VPN route. That is my primary issue: After I am connected to this server's vpn, I can connect to SQL Server using the ip address but I cannot connect by the computer's name as you can see below... Right now, there is no hardware firewall on it since I had it removed to test this issue. I am running Windows 2008 Enterprise Server as the VPN server. • Good visuals supporting adopting Macintosh in a Windows company

  I work in a Windows only software service company, which just put up an internal contest for innovative ideas for the company. The idea I submitted is to let employees use a Mac instead of the mandatory PC if they wished to. My idea has been selected (among a few others) to reach the next stage of the contest. One of the items requested for the next stage is ONE visual that best illustrates the idea. While my pitch is rather good (I think), I have a hard time coming up with ONE visual that would be suggestive enough and not too fanboy-ish, or too restricted. That's why I am requesting suggestions. For reference, some of the points I intend to develop are (not in order): de facto safety (little or no malware) Apple as a company reached its leading position through innovation (bio)diversity is a source of value for a service company, that expands its reach. it makes financial sense the Mac is the most compatible machine, making it a lot easier to test our software (especially web sites). Some OS X technologies can be valuable to a software service company (eg Applescript) Some Apple tools can help us improve (eg Keynote) It's good citizenship for our company as Apple is now best in class according to Greenpeace. I realize this question may be out of topic here. I'd be happy to have suggestions on where to post this question. Please do not argue why OS X might be better or worse than Windows. • Windows 2012 RDS Temporary profile for Administrator

  I've configured a Windows 2012 RDS Farm with two virtual servers (VMWare - each one on a different ESX server). Both servers have Licensing, Web Access, Gateway, Connection Broker and Session Host roles. High Availability is set up and it works fine. Remote Apps are working and even Windows XP clients have access to the web interface. User profile path is \vmfiles1\UserProfileDisks\App\ and almost everyone has full right access to it. The problem I have is that I would like to be able to access both servers at the same time with the Administrator account (console), but each time I try, the second server that I logon to give me access with a temporary profile. I tried to enable/disable multiple sessions per user and forced Admin logoff with the GPO but nothing changed. Another thing is that the server pool is not saved, so each time I restart the RDS server or I logoff from it, I have to add a server in the server manager. Do you have any idea? Sorry if my english is not perfect.

• Problem in accessing Windows shared folder on Ubuntu using terminal

  Hi Guys, Description I have 2 systems with me, one running on Windows(Host) and one on Ubuntu, both on a LAN. On the Windows(Host) I develop software intended for the Linux system and because the Linux system has little external memory, my idea to overcome this is by making the project folder on the Host side a Shared Folder with full access and access it on Ubuntu over the network. To achieve this, I have installed Samba on Ubuntu, when I go to Places -> Network I can see the shared project folder and I simply mount it. A link appears on the desktop. Next, using Nautilus I open the link and I can access the contents of the shared folder. Problem Even though I mount the shared project folder, I don't see it appearing in the /media or the /mnt folder, as a result of this I don't know what path to use to access this folder, from the terminal. For example: When, I mounted my USB stick, as expected, a link for the device appears on the Desktop and I also see a folder in the media folder. So, similarly, a mounted shared folder should have appeared on the /mnt folder, too. Can anyone suggest what I should do now? There are many posts around, but no solid solution for this problem. I know Win/IIS isn't the ideal environment for PHP, but it's what I've got and I need to make it work. These parameters will always replace the value of ; the 5th parameter to mail(), even in safe mode. ;mail.force_extra_parameters = Lastly, I have IIS setup to run an SMTP relay that allows connection and relay, but only from localhost. But when I try something that uses mail(), I get this error: The e-mail could not be sent. Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function... Any ideas?

• Debugging Windows PC freeze

  I have a problem with my computer, would appreciate any hints/ideas. It usually begins not immediately after booting Windows, but at some unpredictable point in time, which doesn't seem to correlate with any specific actions of mine. First sign of a problem is process System starting to consume 25% CPU time steadily. I have a quad-core CPU, so it might be one thread working non-stop. At this point micro-freezes start to occur - screen stops refreshing, but if I have, say, music player running - it continues playing. If I try to do something between the freezes, like open Start menu, it will freeze completely and forever. If I press reset button the PC will shut down and then start cold, as opposed to usual reset behavior (which doesn't include PC shutting down). I have noticed that full restart upon reset is usual for hardware problems, but I think this problem isn't related to at least motherboard-CPU-RAM-videoadapter. It certainly isn't caused by overheating. One very important not is that it seems to be related to Windows hosted WLAN network: I have USB Wi-Fi dongle and have configured a hosted network to share cable Internet connection with Wi-Fi devices. I am not 100% certain there's a strong connection, but in 9 or 10 cases when I enabled the network (by executing netsh wlan start hostednetwork), it did freeze eventually (sometimes within minutes of starting the network, sometimes within hours), and on at least 10 days when I didn't start the network it never froze, no matter how I used the computer). There are no critical/error entries in the events log that I can suspect as being related, only regular stuff like "driver not loaded". I have found no critical/error events that are being logged around the time of freeze occurring and are not logged during normal boot without starting the WLAN.

• Server 2008R2 in Extra Small Windows Azure Instance?

  Windows Azure hosting for an Extra Small (XS) Windows VM seems to come out to be about $10 a month right now. I think this XS instance gives you the equivalent of a 1 GHZ CPU with 768MB of RAM. I think the minimum requirements for Server 2008 is 1GHZ CPU with 512MB of RAM. Also, I think the minimum requirements for SQL Server Express is 1GHZ CPU with 256 MB of RAM and that the minimum requirements for Team Foundation Server Express 11 Beta is 2.2 GHZ CPU with 1 Gig of RAM (this 2.2 GHZ part could be a problem for my 1 GHZ XS VM...). Given the performance of the XS Azure instance, would I be able to install: a very basic MVC web site; a free instance of SQL Server Express; a free single user instance of Team Foundation Server Express 11 Beta and run the XS VM instance without serious crashing? I know there are other Shared WebHost providers that can provide these features for me, but those hosting providers have the following disadvantages: They sometimes cost a lot of money after all of the "addons" are in place They probably don't provide the level of security and employee integrity that Microsoft can provide They don't provide the total control that an Azure VM seems to provide

• Windows 7 doesn't start anymore

  Hi, I've experienced some BSOD on windows 7 RC, and some freezing when startup, but today was big surprise, it doesn't start anymore. I tried to start on safe mode and no results too, it shows the starting animation, then a blue screen for less than a second and turns off immediately. The only thing I remember did today is update flash player under Firefox, then chrome stopped working even after logging off, and once restarting, it doesn't start anymore. Anyone experienced the same issue? any hints? [EDIT 3] Solved : Windows 7 have a very smart repair strategy, it works automatically, and it tried every possible fix, what fixed my problem was the system restore to a previous date, all this happened automatically. • Looking for Remote Control that works with everything (even Windows 7 Media Center)

  Using my Google-Fu, it seems that the most basic of things one gets with any DVR is the remote control. Had I known it would be difficult just to get a consumer IR receiver for Windows 7 I may not have bothered to build an HTPC. But too late, I already have the HTPC ready to go (minus the CETON card...) So I'm moving away from TiVo, I hate paying the monthly fees and my box is ancient. I'm looking for these solutions to my HTCP setup...I want to: Switch audio from HDMI to SPDIF via the remote control (i.e., switch from TV to Receiver) (as a side note, the built-in audio on the mobo has software to do this). Pressing the volume button on the remote will always change the TV's volume (or the Receiver's if possible) and NOT the PC's volume. The remote/receiver works well around 25 feet. Bonus if the IR Receiver can work with my existing TiVo remote (or other remotes laying around the house) I read a review of the Bluetooth TiVo remote...it sounds promising...but I'm not sure if it is great for Windows 7 HTPC?

• My Windows 7 has suddenly stopped displaying Unicode symbols

  For some strange reason, my computer suddenly doesn't show certain unicode characters anymore! I have no idea what happened. Affected applications include Windows Explorer (should be Japanese characters), Google Chrome (should be a heart), and Winamp (should be stars): Russian, German etc. characters are displayed normally. Chrome also displays Japanese script on websites, but not in the GUI. How can I fix it? Update: I have tried to use System Restore to fix it. I needed to go back in time quite a while because the most recent restore points didn't solve it so I used one from the middle of November. After that restore, Unicode symbols were displayed again. Then I updated my system with Windows Update again because those were removed during the restore. After that, the error occurred again! I then did a restore to a point before my new updates, but the error persists, and the old restore point (which I used before) is gone and there are currently no other snapshots of the system. Any suggestions on what to do now? Update 2: I could find a workaround: Control Panel ? Region and Language ? Administration ? Change Language for Unicode-incompatible programs to Japanese (Japan). All mentioned programs display their symbols correctly again. However, I don't consider this a fix because these programs are not usually Unicode-incompatible, and it also leads to some (non-serious) artifacts in some programs. I still welcome an answer that tells me what went wrong here and how to fix the issue.

• Remote connection to a Windows 2008 Server Web edition

  Hello I have just installed Windows 2008 web server to have a development/test site on my office. In the test network I only have 2 machines: Windows server 2008 Web Edition Vista x64 client machine with Visual Studio The client and the server are networked using a NETGEAR router. I have enabled Remote desktop on the server and when I try to connect to it within the Vista client I get the credential window as in the following screenshot. But even if I write the correct credentials I am not able to remote login on the server. Where am I doing wrong? Update 1 I have even tried to create a folder share on the server. But I am not able to access it for the same reason. User or password invalid it says. But this is impossible as I am logging in the server with the same credentials. Update 2 If I try to browse the network from the RDP client I receive a message saying that there are no server running Terminal Services in my network.... :O

• Dell Driver Support for Latitude E6320 Windows 7 Enterprise

  I recently did a reinstall of Windows 7 Enterprise on a Dell Latitude E6320, which is a 64 bit system. After the install process, and doing typical Windows Update stuff, I looked at my Device Manager and found that I had devices which were missing drivers. My missing drivers: After going to the Dell Support site and looking at the files, and doing some sleuthing I found the following support document: http://downloads.dell.com/utility/Latitude%20E-Family%20%20Mobile%20Precision%20Re-Image%20How-To%20Guide%20-%20A03%20Rev%203%200.pdf This document hints in appendix C that the Broadcom USH is the Control Point Security and the Unknown device is Micro freefall sensor. The network controller is my wireless, as I cannot connect wirelessly, and the final missing driver I am not sure. Attempting to install the control point security exe on the support page will not work. After downloading, I am given the message that I am attempting to install a 32 bit driver on a 64 bit machine EVEN THOUGH I selected the win7 64 bit option from the support page. Beyond that, some of the drivers (Which are confusing to read and hard to understand what they do) and the system utilities which are supposedly supposed to make this process simpler will either a) not run because they are 32 bit exe's or b) the support page cannot find the file attempted to download. Is there anything I can do to get (at the very least) my wireless running, but idealistically all of my drivers. A solution which assumes Dell is completely incompetent would be ideal. :P Some forums have said that I should download the chipset driver, others say to get the system utility file (DSS_UTIL_WIN_R282536.EXE). I have had no luck as of yet...

• Hard Drive that was used before not detected or accessible in Windows 7

  Hello SU: My PC crashed for some unknown reason, and I am still working on what caused that. However, I pulled my main (windows) drive from my computer and hooked it up to my roommate's machine and was able to pull the data I needed off of it (i.e. the drive is good). I hook up his drives as they were, I had to turn off his machine and unplug his secondary drive to hook mine up, boot his machine and there is no second drive available in windows explorer. I opened Device Manager to see if for some reason it's drive letter got un-assigned, but there is nothing listed in there except his primary hard drive, his optical drive and one other optical drive which I believe is the virtual drive Daemon Tools made. The drive shows up in the BIOS, however after I restarted his machine again it sits on the "Entering setup....." screen at the load window. The only thing I can think of is that may have messed with stuff is I used this tutorial to create a bootable XP install on a USB drive to install XP on my machine (I am 99% certain that the optical drive in my PC is broken) and maybe it used the other hard drive's letter for the USB drive for some reason, which doesn't make much sense since it was recognized it as a different drive letter before I started the process. It is possible that it used the secondary hard drive's letter for it's work, but once again I am uncertain. Where should I go from here? He his bound to wake up within the next several hours and will probably flip a lid if I cannot get some sort of handle on this. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. PS: Anyone who helps me get this situated has a beer or two on me, as long as you are in the greater metro Detroit area, or don't mind traveling a bit!

• PHP 5.3.2 Upgrade on Windows

  I have a development box running Windows XP, Apache 2.2.15 Mysql and PHP 5.2.6 About a month ago I updated the Apache to the latest version and it went swimmingly. I am not having the same success with upgrading PHP to the latest version. I backed up my PHP directory and then deleted it. Used the Windows Installer for PHP 5.3.2, installed as an Apache 2.2.X module. I can get "Hello World" and phpinfo() to come up but cannot get mysql to connect. I have the extension un-commented in the php.ini and shouldn't really have to touch the Apache httpd.conf file since I didn't change the directory of PHP. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. I have to get this right and then upgrade the Live Server too so I want to get this down pat. I've tried to use installation guides on the web with no luck. Any info pertaining to this problem would be great. I'm also afraid that the other PHP modules may not load but cannot really tell anything past mysql not working.

• Windows Server 2008 - inexplicable system time jumps/glitches/inaccuracies

  I'm running a production web server on Windows Server 2008. On this server I have a database which logs certain user actions, but every now and again I inexplicably get database entries which, according to the record ID and the records immediately before and after, have the wrong time logged against them (7 days+ too old). For example, record ID 1001 will be for Dec 7, 11pm, 1002 will be for Dec 7, 11:01pm, then 1003 will be for Nov 28, 1:38am, then the next will be back on track again. The problem seems to occur in random records (or 2-3 records in a row) and crops up once every few days. This is absolutely baffling because there is only one place in the application that assigns this date/time value and it's simply the system UTC date. I have been synchronizing the system time to time-a.nist.gov (which I read in another article was a bit more reliable than the default time.windows.com) and it seems to occasionally get out of time anyway (3-4 minutes), but I'm speculating that occasionally the time server has a temporary glitch where the date changes to a drastically wrong value for a short space of time, then changes back. Either that, or the motherboard clock battery is screwed and the reason the time momentarily changes is that the motherboard loses the time and then the time synchronization puts it back again. Could either of my suspicions be right? Should I turn off time synchronization for a production server? Assigning dates to an event log where the dates are up to 2 weeks prior to the actual date is a severe problem I can't have when the next version of my application is released. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

• windows 7 turns off itself everyday at about 9am

  I was given this comp at work and after a week or so this strange thing started to happen in the middle of doing something :-( It turns off itself at about 9.10am every morning Just once a day and it works fine after it had it little nap. it happens both if the comp was on all night or I turned it off before leaving the office. I tried to swapped the memory as I was told that there was an issue with memory. But moving or removing any memory did not make any difference. I am not aware that I would install any program that could cause that. I installed AVG and set it up to do every day scan about 8am + if restart is needed it requires user confirmation. 'The Software Protection service has stopped' few minutes before it turned off itself but it happened also at other times without the computer turned off. I turned off Windows automatic updates as the first thing when I got the comp configuration Windows 7 Ultimate Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 at 2.8GH, 8GB RAM ST31000528AS Barracuda 7200.12 SATA 3Gb/s 1TB Update Below message are logged when I turn the comp on again. • Poor performance on IIS7, only on Windows Server 2008, fine on Windows 7?

  Hi, I'm new to IIS7 but have experience with other versions. I've been working on an application that works great in a dev environment (as always) but when I push it to a windows server 2008/IIS7 box performance takes a noticeable hit. The dev environment is Windows7/IIS7. The configuration in IIS is the same on the dev box as the server. I've tried all sorts of things to try and find a reason for this but I cant come to any conclusion. I've ruled out database problems on the live box as all data is cached after the first request. I've confirmed this to be true and made sure there is no additional database traffic. I've ruled out network issues with a combination of monitoring requests with fiddler and local debugging on the server. Whenever the code runs on the server there seems to be a performance issue. The server: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40ghz with 2gb RAM. I know this is not fantastic but I was expecting it to at least perform as well as my dev environment (which is running much more on a lower spec). The CPU using peaks at under 60%, and memory usage is less than half of the available. I've enabled failed request tracing and most of the time is spent in a custom HttpModule, this module works to handle every request, I cant get any more detail as to what within the module may be causing the problem. Any ideas, I've been pulling my hair out for days now. Thanks
