The HTML 5 canvas supports composite operations (See here). Is this possible in an Android Canvas? I scanned the API of the Canvas class but couldn't find anything useful. I need at least the composite operation "source-in" or (if this isn't possible) "source-atop".

  • Map tiling - What kind of projection?

    Hi. I've taken a large image and divided it in to square tiles (256x256). It is made for google maps also, so the whole image is divided into z_x_y.png (Depending on zoom level). z=0 = 1x1 tile z=1 = 2x2 tilesthe z=2 = 4x4 tiles My imageMap is "flat" and is not based on a sphere like the worldmap. I'm gonna use this map on a windows mobile app (which has no google API), and all the "points of interests" is inserted into a database by longitude and latitude. And since i have to make this for the windows mobile, i just have XY coordinate system. Is it enough to just use this: MAP_WIDTH = 256*TILES_W; MAP_HEIGHT = 256*TILES_H; function convert(int lat, int lon) { int y = (int)((-1 * lat) + 90) * (MAP_HEIGHT / 180); int x = (int)(lon + 180) * (MAP_WIDTH / 360); ImagePoint p = new ImagePoint(x,y); // An object which holds the coordinates return p; } Or do i need a projection technique?   • Google GWT cross-browser support: is it BS ?

    I developed a browser-deployed full-text search app in FlashBuilder which communicates RESTfully with a remote web-server. The software fits into a tiny niche--it is for use with ancient languages not modern ones, and there's no way I'm going to make any money on it but I did spend a lot of time on it. Now that Apple won't allow Flash on the iPad, I'm looking for a 100% javascript solution and was led to consider GWT. It looked promising, but one of the apps being "showcased" as a stellar example of what can be done with GWT has this disclaimer on their website (names {removed} to protect the potentially innocent) : Your current web browser (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/532.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/4.1.249.1045 Safari/532.5) is not officially supported by {company and product name were here}. If you experience any problems using this site please install either Microsoft Internet Explorer 6+ or Mozilla Firefox 3.5+ before contacting {product name was here} Support. What gives when GWT apps aren't "officially" supported on Chrome? What grade (A, B, C, D, F) would you give to GWT for cross-browser support? For folks who don't get these kinds of letter grades, A is "excellent" and "F" is failure, and "C" is average. Thanks for your opinions.

  • How can I effectively test against the Windows API?

    I'm still having issues justifying TDD to myself. As I have mentioned in other questions, 90% of the code I write does absolutely nothing but Call some Windows API functions and Print out the data returned from said functions. The time spent coming up with the fake data that the code needs to process under TDD is incredible -- I literally spend 5 times as much time coming up with the example data as I would spend just writing application code. Part of this problem is that often I'm programming against APIs with which I have little experience, which forces me to write small applications that show me how the real API behaves so that I can write effective fakes/mocks on top of that API. Writing implementation first is the opposite of TDD, but in this case it is unavoidable: I do not know how the real API behaves, so how on earth am I going to be able to create a fake implementation of the API without playing with it? I have read several books on the subject, including Kent Beck's Test Driven Development, By Example, and Michael Feathers' Working Effectively with Legacy Code, which seem to be gospel for TDD fanatics. Feathers' book comes close in the way it describes breaking out dependencies, but even then, the examples provided have one thing in common: The program under test obtains input from other parts of the program under test. My programs do not follow that pattern. Instead, the only input to the program itself is the system upon which it runs. How can one effectively employ TDD on such a project?

    I'm curious if it's common practice outside of the GAE platform to be able to defer tasks to background workers via webhooks. I find it particularly useful to speed up the front-end of webapps, by delegating any long process to background tasks. I'd like to hear about open source software allowing to implement a TaskQueue-like API, with webhooks preferably, if anyone has some experience in this area. Thanks!

  • z-index has no effect in IE7 with Google Map and Navigation Sub-Menus

    I feel like the problem is extremely apparent. I'm working on an issue with a client's site, which actually happens on several of my clients' sites but this one is the most apparent. IE7 Is refusing to obey z-index rules. I've played around with differing values, particularly on the divs #mapWrapper and #map. I also ready through Aleksandar Vacic's article on IE6/7 z-index discrepancies, but still nothing. Any assistance would be much appreciated, I'm tearing my hair out on this one.

  • Creating a dynamic (video) Overlay on Google Maps on Android 2.1

    I'm trying to create a map overlay for displaying a video stream (MJPEG) on top of a Mapview. Currently I've a standalone activity that creates a data thread for fetching MJPEG video frames. I'm using a handler to send a frame (as a Bitmap) from the data thread to the main activity which then updates the UI. I'm not sure how I can implement "refresh" for updating my "overlayed" video stream. EDIT: What I mean by "refresh" is - how can I update the video portion (not the mapview) of my UI whenever I get a new video frame. I plan to paint the video frame (bitmap) in the "draw method" of my implementation of the Overlay subclass. But the "draw" method is not invoked by me directly. Thanks.

    for development of interactive 3d web applications, which engine is recommended? I am aware that WebGL has been anounced to become standarized for all browsers in the near future (1~2 years). I am afraid that by investing time into a proprietary game engine such as Unity, torque would be not great once plugin-less open source 3d engines appear (webgl & 3D javascript). Is this a stupid thing to worry about ? Should I begin with Unity3D (it's demo's and tools were mind blowing).

  • Java Google App Engine inconsistent data lose after restarting dev server

    Hello everyone, I am using Java GAE. So far, i'm just scafolding my data objects and i'm seeing an interesting issue. The records that i am playing around with are getting updated properly as long as my dev server is running up. The second that the my dev server gets restarted, i lose all of my changes. That would be not alarming if i lost all of my records, but, there was a point of time where my data persisted through the server restart. I'm worried that i would lose production data if i launched without fixing this potential bugs? ANy idea on wher ei should look?

The problem i have is, that some data is stored in cookies, and the cookies are send to images, when they are shown. Is there any way to disable this globally (cookie-free requests) in web.config, or even in the HttpHandler itself?     We use Facebook Connect on our site in conjunction with the WWW::Facebook::API CPAN module to publish to our users newsfeed when requested by the user.   • Customized listfield with image displaying from a url

    I am displaying a customized list field with text on the right side and image on the left side.The image comes from a URL dynamically.Initially i am placing a blank image on the left of the list field,then call URLBitmapField class's setURL method,which actually does the processing and places the processed image on top of the blank image.The image gets displayed on the list field,but to see that processed image i need to press any key or click on the list field items.I want the processed image to be displayed automatically in the list field after the processing.Can anyone tell me where i am getting wrong?     Update: I switched this back from answered as I tried the solution posed in cogent Nick's answer and switched to Google's urlfetch: logging.debug("starting urlfetch for http://%s%s" % (self.host, self.url)) result = urlfetch.fetch("http://%s%s" % (self.host, self.url), payload=self.body, method="POST", headers=self.headers, allow_truncated=True, deadline=5) logging.debug("finished urlfetch") but unfortunately finished urlfetch is never printed - I see the timeout happen in the logs (it returns 200 after 5 seconds), but execution doesn't seem tor return. Hi All- I'm attempting to play around with Twitter's Streaming (aka firehose) API with Google App Engine (I'm aware this probably isn't a great long term play as you can't keep the connection perpetually open with GAE), but so far I haven't had any luck getting my program to actually parse the results returned by Twitter. Some code: logging.debug("firing up urllib2") req = urllib2.Request(url="http://%s%s" % (self.host, self.url), data=self.body, headers=self.headers) logging.debug("called urlopen for %s %s, about to call urlopen" % (self.host, self.url)) fobj = urllib2.urlopen(req) logging.debug("called urlopen") When this executes, unfortunately, my debug output never shows the called urlopen line printed. I suspect what's happening is that Twitter keeps the connection open and urllib2 doesn't return because the server doesn't terminate the connection. Wireshark shows the request being sent properly and a response returned with results. I tried adding Connection: close to my request header, but that didn't yield a successful result. Any ideas on how to get this to work? thanks -Simon

  • Need to find latitude and longitude of postcodes and store into my database

    Hey guys, Ive got a database full of UK Postcodes, now i'd like to be able to store the latitude and longitude of these specific postcodes along with the record with the database. Is there anyway that i can obtain this data free without violating any T&C's? I know i could do this using google maps api for each postcode, but i have way over 20,000 postcodes in this database and to get the lat and lng for each of these postcodes each time is not an option really.   • what libraries or platforms should I use to build web apps that provide real-time, asynchronous data

    This is a less a question with a simple, practical answer and more a question to foster discussion on the real-time data exchange topic. I'll begin with an example: Google Wave is, at its core, a real-time asynchronous data synchronization engine. Wave supports (or plans to support) concurrent (real-time) document collaboration, disconnected (offline) document editing, conflict resolution, document history and playback with attribution, and server federation. A core part of Wave is the Operational Transformation engine: http://www.waveprotocol.org/whitepapers/operational-transform The OT engine manages document state. Changes between clients are merged and each client has a sane and consistent view of the document at all times; the final document is eventually consistent between all connected clients. My question is: is this system abstract or general enough to be used as a library or generic framework upon which to build web apps that synchronize real-time, asynchronous state in each client? Is the Wave protocol directly used by any current web applications (besides Google's client)? Would it make sense to directly use it for generic state synchronization in a web app? What other existing libraries or frameworks would you consider using when building such a web app? How much code in such an app might be domain-specific logic vs generic state synchronization logic? Or, put another way, how leaky might the state synchronization abstractions be? Comments and discussion welcomed!
