• Booting from a different partition.

  I have a question. I run Windows7 on C:\ drive and it is the only operating system. I want to install Windows8 developer installation (iso image), and I have it saved in a new partition I created, which has only this.G:\ I want to boot from this partition G:\ so that I can install Windows 8, but in my boot options I get only Internal Hard Disk, CD ROM, and USB Drive. I don't have a USB drive. How can I boot from G:\ with that iso image ?

• Solaris 11 VNC Server is "blurry" or "smeared"

  I've been annoyed by quality of the image that is displayed by my VNC viewer when I visit a Solaris 11 VNC server. How should I describe the image? Blurry? Grainy? Smeared? Low resolution? Compressed? Badly encoded? This is what I have gotten used to seeing on Solaris 11: This is not a problem for me when I view Solaris 10 VNC servers. I've finally taken the time to investigate, and the solution is simple. On the VNC client, don't allow "Tight" encoding. My VNC Viewer will negotiate to Tight encoding if it is available. When negotiating with the Solaris 10 VNC server, Tight is not a supported option, so the Solaris 10 server and my client will agree on ZRLE.  Now that I have disabled Tight encoding on my VNC client, the Solaris 11 VNC Servers looks much better: How should I describe the display when my VNC client is forced to negotiate to ZRLE encoding with the Solaris 11 VNC Server? Crisp? Clear? Higher resolution? Using a lossless compression algorithm? When I'm on a low bandwidth connection, I may re-enable Tight compression on my laptop. In the mean time, the ZRLE compression is sufficient for a coast-to-coast desktop, through the corporate firewall, encoded with VPN, through my ISP and onto my laptop. YMMV.

• Algorithm to zoom a plotted function

If my function is, for example f(x)=x^2, then z(x) is sqrt(x). I evaluate each point between -z(x) to z(x) and then I draw them. As you can see I use the half of the size of the screen to put the function in the middle of the screen. The problem isn't that the code isn't working, actually plots the function. But if the screen is of 320*480 then this function will be really tiny like in the image below. My question is: how can I change this algorithm to scale the function?. BTW what I'm really wanting to do is trace a route to later display an animated sprite, so actually scale this image doesnt gonna help me. I need change the algorithm in order to draw the same interval but in a larger space. Any tip helps, thanks! Current working result Desired result UPDATE: I will try explain more in detail what the problem is. Given this interval [-15...15] (-z(x) to z(x)) I need divide this points in a bigger interval [-320...320] (-x to x). For example, when you use some plotting software like this one. Although the div where is contain the function has 640 px of width, you dont see that the interval is from -320 to 320, you see that the interval is from -6 to 6. How can I achieve this?

• Hyperlinks on images in PDF from Word 2010

  I've got a Word 2010 document that I'm trying to convert to a PDF with "Save As...", preserving hyperlinks. Something odd is going on: Hyperlinks on inline text, or images that are inline, work fine. Hyperlinks on images with layout "in front of" text don't work in the PDF, same for hyperlinked drawing shapes. What I'm trying to do is make a "clickmap" image by putting an image on the page and overlaying parts of it with transparent shapes that hyperlink to different URLs. This isn't working, and the transparency has nothing to do with it - hyperlinks in the PDF seem only to work on "in line with text" elements. Am I missing something, or is there a better way to do this?

• Black screen with cursor after BIOS screen

  Here is a weird one, Got computer with Windows XP. It's getting stuck on a black screen with cursor blinking. What did I do: - Boot from installation CD (recovery option - command line): chkdsk C: /R copy D:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\ copy D:\i386\ntldr c:\ fixmbr fixboot Chkdsk showed 0 bad sectors and no problems during scan. dir on C:\ shows all directories and files in place (Windows, Program Files, Documents and Settings). BIOS shows correct boot drive. Still does not boot. Not sure what to think of. Please help. UPDATE: Just performed these steps: Backed up current disk C: (without MBR) using True Image to external hard drive Ran Windows XP clean installation with deleting all partitions and creating new one. Hard drive booted fine into Windows GUI installation!!! Then: I interrupted installation. Booted from True Image recovery CD and restored archive of disk C to an new partition. Same issue with black screen.

• Boot Linux from DOS (with loadlin.exe etc)

  I have been using the latest version of loadlin.exe (version 1.6e). It works on some machines but on others I get "no place after kernel for initrd". The kernel is about 5MB in size (non-modular) and my initrd image (decompressed) is about 8MB. One route that I could take is to enable module support and offload some of the weight of the kernel into the initrd image but I'm not confident this will rectify the issue. Are there any alternatives to loadlin.exe that are capable of loading Linux from a booted DOS session? I basically have a series of DOS tools that I'd like to run one after another and then boot into Linux, which loadlin.exe seems to be working very well for except on some machines.

• No text in working indicator-messages after enabling different icons depending on the status

  My indicator-messages has some problems. As you can see in the image, there appears no text. The indicator is working correctly, if there is some income, a number will appear in its proper place or I will be able to see the minutes passed after I got an email, but still no information. As you can see in the picture, I changed the envelope icon for the status one. I configured it as is indicated in http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/08/ubuntu-add-new-message-indicator-icons, with the indicator changing depending on the status. But I modified it so I see the bubble. The bubble gets the arrow when I'm absent, for example, or an "X" of I'm disconnected, and also turns blue if there an income. I believe the problem is related with this new indicator. The first days, it was working fine, but then the text dissapeared. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the packet, with no success. I'm using ubuntu 12.10 64bits with Unity. Someone has an idea how to fix this? I would prefer conserving the characteristic of having different icons. Thanks a lot!!! • Utility to take daily screenshots of a webpage

  I would like to have a visual history of my Tomato bandwidth graphs, so that I can roughly/manually correlate them with some other factors. Tomato can squirrel away the actual data points, but I'd rather not deal with importing it into some visualization tool. For sheer simplicity, a single image per day would be preferable. I'd like a program that can wake up at say, midnight, take a screenshot of a given webpage (the URL will always be the same), and save that image to a folder, maybe named after the date/time. I'd prefer OS X, but Windows and Linux are fair game too; I use all three. Any suggestions?

• Blurred refurbished TFT

  I got 3 refurbished PC+TFT 19". All TFT shows a very blurry image. I estimate the TFT's are 2-3 yrs old. The PC's running Windows7 Pro. The resolution is set to the TFT native values. It could be possible that all TFT's are broken but I have similiar models that are up to 5 yrs old, without any issue. I still think it could be a config issue but from the hardware it is possible that a TFT get broken I shows up a very blurry image. Update TFT HP 2035, grafic Intel Q35/GMA 3100, analog D-SUB connector, Manuf. date Sep 2005. Config. resolution 1600x1200, PPP 150% Without ClearType it is worst. Desktop Icon titles seems to be good and clear. But in Notepad for example the effect is that on the right of the characters is a pinky shadow.

• Windows XP occasionally hangs for 2-3 minutes as the splash screen fades in.

  This is a bit of a rare problem, I have not been able to debug or fix it or find anyone else with the issue. I hope someone here can help me out. Once in a while, I boot up Windows XP from the first partition of the first disk (using grub, the computer dual-boots ubuntu) and it hangs as the Windows XP splash image fades in, leaving the screen with a dim image of the splash screen. After 2-3 minutes, it continues to boot as normal, no error messages or strange behavior. I have noticed that this happens about 75% of the time when the last time the computer was shut down it was from Ubuntu, and maybe 5-10% of the time otherwise. I have looked at system logs as far as I was able, and did not find anything the miss. What is causing this and how can I fix it?

  Recently I wanted to create a bootable USB of Linux mint. I found that there was a lot of conflicting advice/experience about whether the 'dd' command could be used to create a bootable USB. I decided to download an ISO and try. While dd definitely put the image on the USB stick it was not bootable. So my question is what is the magic ingredient that will make this work or why has this approach persisted if it does not work? • How much ram to be able to convert large (5-6MB) jpegs? [closed]

  I've got a project where we want to be processing large jpegs (5-6MB) with apache and php (using GD library). My understanding is that the server converts the image into a BMP making it quite ram heavy and currently we're unable to do it with our 1gb of memory. Here's the error we get: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 17408 bytes) How much ram should we be looking at running with to process images of this size? Edit: As Chris S the purist highlighted below, my post is apparently vague. I am doing the most basic and common manipulation of an image, say turning it from a 4352px x 3264px jpg of 5mb in size, to a 900px x 675px file.

• Use Amazon EC2 as a backup server

  I would like to use Amazon EC2 as an emergency backup database+web server in the event our primary host becomes unavailable. I feel like I wouldn't have trouble setting up a Windows instance, install SQL Server and get the web server up and running (would take a few hours, plus installing various libraries, our source code, etc). My question relates to pricing. If I simply "stop" the instance rather than "terminate" it, does that stop counting "instance-hours"? I would prefer not to terminate the instance and lose all that work I spent setting it up. If I must "terminate" in order to stop the billing - is it possible to make an image of the server after I have set it all up, then save that image somewhere (S3?) Is this something that people do regularly? Ideally this instance would just be waiting in the wings for an issue with our host, but costing us nothing except perhaps data storage costs.

• Laser range finder, what language to use? Beginner advice

  I hope this is the right place. I am a programming beginner, and I want to make a laser range finder, and I need advice about how to proceed etc. In a few weeks I will get a lot of dirt cheap 3-5V lasers and some cheap usb webcams. I will point the laser and webcam in parallel, and somehow use trigonometry and programming to determined distance. I have seen online that others made done it this way, I have purposefully not looked at the details too much because I want to develop it on my own, and learn, but I know the general outline. I have a general idea of how to proceed. The program loads in a picture from the webcam, and I dunno how images work really, but I imagine there is a format that is basically an array of RGB values.. is this right? I will load in the red values, and find the most red one. I know the height difference between the laser and the cam. I know the center dot in the image, I know the redmost dot. I'm sure there's some way to figure out some range there. TO THE POINT: 1) Is my reasoning sound thus far, especially in terms of image analysis? I don't need complete solutions, just general points 2) What I need to figure out, is what platform to use. I have an arduino... apparently, I've read it's too weak to process images. Read that online. I know some C I know some Python I have Matlab. Which is the best option? I do not need high sampling rates, I have not decided on whether it should be automated or whether I should make a GUI with a button to press for samples. I will keep it simple and expand I think. I also do not need it to be super accurate, I'm just having fun here. Advice!

• Why do I see different TCP behaviour between IIS and FTP server applications on Windows 2003?

  I am comparing Wireshark traces of a 10MB file download file from: the FileZilla FTP server and IIS (using HTTP) on the same Windows 2003 server. The FTP download performs faster and the trace shows the server behaving as expected, sending more data to the client with every ACK received: Link to full-size image The HTTP server trace shows a more bursty pattern. The timing of the send bursts are sometimes unrelated to any ACKs received from the client (circled in red): Link to full-size image Anyone have a suggestion as to why IIS traffic is having like this? Update: We have tried modifying the http.sys registry settings (setting MaxBytesPerSend to 256k and MaxBufferedSendBytes to 64k as recommended). Changing MaxBytesPerSend does seem to improve performance by increasing the amount of in-flight data , but we still see the same bursty pattern.

• Mouse pointer size inconsistent

  Since installing Ubuntu 12.04, I've been having a problem with the mouse pointer size. On the desktop, it is quite a bit larger than it should be (24), though the different cursors (editing text, hyperlink hand, etc) are correct. The size changes to the correct size when the pointer is over some application windows (GVim, Netbeans, Firefox), but then changes back once it is moved out of the window. There was a similar question here, but the Xdefaults solution did not work for me, and I didn't want to try the one requiring editing the icon image. In addition, I've tried changing the cursor theme using sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme as well as using the dconf-editor, but though I can change the theme, the size issue remains. In case it's relevant, I'm running on a dual-screen setup with monitor sizes of 2560x1600 and 1920x1080, using the NVidia video driver. Is there another way to control pointer size, or a setting that might be messing it up? EDIT: These are the values/options I have for update-alternatives and in dconf-editor. • Programmatically closing a dialog box - win32 [migrated]

  I'm working on an application to detect a pop-up dialog and then automatically dismiss it. I'm writing this as a C++/Win32 app. The dialog box is generated by IE 7 and I can detect the window, but several methods to get the OK button to "click" have failed. Doing searches for other people's solutions, sending these messages to the button handle seems to have worked in a lot of situations: PostMessage( handle, WM_LBUTTONDOWN, 0, 0 ); PostMessage( handle, WM_LBUTTONUP, 0, 0 ); PostMessage( handle, BM_SETSTATE, 1, 0 ); It has no effect on the button state in my tests though. I can send tab characters to the main window and see that the OK button gets focus, but then sending return characters does nothing. To learn more about this I used Spy++ to get information about the window hierarchy and what messages are delievered when I manually click the OK button. Looking at the message log and reading about WM_MOUSEACTIVATE seamed to offer a solution. The log info shows that 0002166C was the button window. So in my code I tried this: GetClassNameA( handle, str, str_size ); if( strcmp( str, "Internet Explorer_Server" ) != 0 ) return TRUE; // Not the window we're interested in. // Send a message to activate the button window and have it process a mouse click. PostMessage( handle, WM_MOUSEACTIVATE, (WPARAM) dialog_handle, MAKELPARAM( HTCLIENT, WM_LBUTTONDOWN ); Based on the window hierarchy and message log, I think the window with the class name "Internet Explorer_Server" is the button. Maybe I'm wrong, because it does seem like an odd class name for a button... Below is a link to the window hierarchy image, message log when I manually click the OK button. • Desktop Properties Background selection problems

  From the Desktop of my XP Home Edn SP3 system, under the Right-Click Menu Properties, the [Desktop] tab, of the 'Display Properties' window shows a selection list for the Desktop's Background image. For me this list has become frozen and its slider (at right) will not move. The [Browse] button and the 'Position' dropdown list (whether the selected image is centred, stretched, etc) are also greyed out. I can still use both the Color dropdown list at the right of the Background list and the [Customize Desktop] button below it, and make any changes as desired. What's gone wrong. I'm guessing maybe a registery setting or I've deleted a file somewhere, but haven't found the cause as yet. Any suggestions?? Thanks.

  I have a collection of images which is updated regularly that I'd like to group. Rather than reviewing every single image in the collection, I'd like to run an automated tool that pre-groups the images. Adobe PhotoShop Elements has a "Find Visually Similar photos" feature which works well, but it requires manually importing the images first, then I have to select an image each time I need Photoshop to search for images that are visually similar. I do not need a de-duping program since the images are never identical. Is there anything out there that can provide what I'm looking for?

• Share files and catelog them across a server

  Hi all, here is what I am looking for, I use a number of software packages when creating online learning courses. I have a huge number of courses and they use text, audio files, images and video files. I am looking for somthing that I can install on our server and upload the content, index, tag and categorise and enter a description so that when a screen print has to be changed for example I can find all the places that I used the image so that I can go in and change the image without having to check every file that I have created over the last year. An open source solution would be great or something that isn't to expensive. Thank you for any suggestions you can make.

• Search Replace extended in a html file

  i have a little question. I have a big html file and want to replace lots of things inside a lot of times. The only problem i cant solve is a replace with a variable. Example: <image src="start_files\0002.jpg" style="width:216pt; height:162"> should be transformed in <a href="start_files\0002.jpg" target="_blank"><image src="start_files\0002.jpg" style="width:216pt; height:162"></a> do you have an idea how to do it? I have a windows system with Notepad2 and Notepad++ and i could install a new tool if needed. (like Windows SED). The best solution would be a batch solution where i can add other transformations. • For photography use, is Unity is overheating my laptop? Should I try OpenSuse instead?

  I am a perfect noob here in the Linux world. Previously was using Windows 7. Mine is an HP laptop - Intel core2duo T5470 @ 1.60GHz × 2 / 965GM with 2GB RAM. I installed Ubuntu 12.04TLS and is quite liking it's display. I really recognized it is 3D before knowing it was Unity 3D interface. My uses are image editing, home uses, downloads, browsing etc.. No video-editing/gaming at all. Being a Photography enthusiast I use image editing programs fairly more. But I am now feeling my laptop is getting a bit overheated - processor and hard-disk. I tried lm-sensor and could not make out much of it. Installed Xsensors.7. It gives the same output as lm-sensors gave me. It gives temperature for 4 things Temp1, temp2, temp3, and temp4. For "acpitz". Please guide me in this. However I wanted to ask something more. Which one is better for working with images - photography I mean - openSUSE 12.1 or Ubuntu with unity 3D? Can I get the display quality with the openSUSE distribution? I heard for laptops openSUSE uses power more efficiently, is there any truth? Please suggest me whether I should try openSUSE or not. If so with which GUI? KDE or GNOME? Thanks in advance. Regards SoT

• File must be saved as a copy with this selection?

  I have created an image in photoshop 7 and am now attempting to save it as a png. I click "Save As" and am presented with a save file dialog with *.PSD selected by default. If I then select *.PNG a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark appears next to a greyed out box called "Layers" and the message "file must be saved as a copy with this selection" appears. This is confusing me because the image is comprised of only a single layer. How do I resolve this?

• Positioned element adding to total div height [migrated]

  I have a 800 x 600 rotatable image with forward and back buttons repositioned to the sides. The height of the div is suppose to be 600px, but the actual height of the div was pushed to 690, including the height of the button image. And the div was blocking a row of clickable menu on top. So I made the div height to 518px and moved top -75px to get the real dimension I want. But I feel dirty doing this... Is there a correct way to do this? Or is this workaround more or less correct? Below is the code.
