• FBReader: How do I get it to display partial images?

  I've been using FBReader so far for reading e-books, but my problem with it is how it handles images. Whenever there's an image, it isn't displayed until all of it can be displayed (i.e. it won't show if you haven't scrolled down far enough) and scrolling isn't smooth because the image is treated as one line. Is there a way to change this so that it displays the partially visible images? If there is not a way to change this, I am open to software suggestions to use as an alternative (I'm using Linux). I have already tried Calibre, but I find that it's too bloated. It takes ages to start up, and I don't want a directory for all my e-books...

• How can I remove duplicate icons for "launched" java programs in the launcher?

  When launching java programs (like IntelliJ IDEA and Crashplan) in Natty's Unity launcher, duplicate icons are shown (see image). For IntelliJ I created the .desktop file, for Crashplan the .desktop file is supplied with the application. Is there something that can be changed in the .desktop files (or somewhere else) that can prevent this from occurring? I couldn't find a bug report for unity itself but programs like Gnome-Do/Docky have bug reports and had to make internal changes to their applications to prevent this. In this image the 1st icon is the one created from the .desktop file and the second icon is after launching it. Second icon disappears when closing the application. • Windows 7 dual monitor setup: Wallpaper alignment

  I have the following dual-screen set up on my Windows 7 PC: [2][1], that means my secondary monitor is on the right side of my primary monitor. Now I have a dual-screen wallpaper that should stretch across the monitors. I have set it to "Tile" mode. Problem: The wallpaper invariably starts at [1] (left edge of the image being on the left edge of [1]), and then continues on [2]. It basically splits the wrong way, producing a rather awkward look. How can I make the wallpaper appear correctly (i.e. left edge of the image being on the left edge of [2])?

• Unable to burn Windows ISO from Fedora

  First of all, English is not my native tongue, so apologies for any mistakes. My computer recently started prompting that it can't launch Windows successfully. So I just choose start Windows normally. Then, I found that the startup freezes at the Windows screen (before the login prompt). I have tried rebooting several times and get the same results. So I just gave up. After few days, I tried to boot up my laptop again. This time it got to the desktop, but it's extremely slow and the icons on my Desktop don't show up. I decided to format the Windows partition and reinstall a new one. (It is usually faster that way since I kept my 400GB+ data on aother partition and programs and the rest in the same partition as Windows). The thing is I get the Windows disc at the moment (Traveling aboard). But I have a Windows 7 disc image on my hard disk. So, I downloaded Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, made a Live USB, and then try to burn the image from Ubuntu. But the program just freezes and I don't know why. I tried several times and it's still the same. So I tried using Fedora instead, just to see if it will work. The Disk Image Writer report something like this. Error unmounting /dev/dm-0: Command-line `umount "/dev/dm-0"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: umount: /: target is busy (In some cases useful info about processes that use the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1).) (udisks-error-quark, 14) Also, I tried installing linux on the windows partition. The installation program freezes (both Ubuntu and Fedora). So, I thought that maybe something are wrong with my hard disk. I seek the solution on the internet and found that gparted can be used to format a partition. And it also froze at "Searching /dev/sda/ partition ...". I'm using Lenovo Y570. • Can KVM roll back changes to Virtual Disks automatically?

  I'm currently using VirtualBox on my Linux server to run a small Windows guest OS. I've configured its main virtual hard drive as what VBox calls "Immutable" - meaning that any changes to it are written into a differencing image that is discarded when the system reboots. Can KVM do something similar? I've read about snapshots via "savevm", "loadvm" but I believe that's saved states, not differencing images. What I ultimately want is a VM with two drives: one reverts on each reboot, one keeps its changes. Ideally, the unchangeable drive image should be stored with only read access granted to the user running KVM.

• Buffer System For Items

  I am going to reference this image of what I want to accomplish in JavaScript. This is the Diablo buffer system. This question may be a bit advanced (or possibly not even allowed). But I was wondering how you might go about implementing this type of system in a JavaScript game. Currently to implement such a system in JavaScript escapes me, and I am turning to SO to get some suggestions, ideas, and hopefully some insight in how I could accomplish this without being to costly on the CPU. Some thoughts of mine for implementing such a system would be to: Create DIVS within a DIV that hold each position of the inventory Go through each item you own in a container and see which DIV it belongs to Make said item images the DIVs image This type of system might possibly work if ALL items were 1x1, but for this example its not going to work out. I am at a complete lost of ideas how to even accomplish this. Although, maybe rendering directly to the canvas and checking mouse cords could work, there would more than likely be A HUGE annoyance when checking if other items are overlapping each other (meaning you cant place the item down, and possibly switching item with the cursor item ). That said, what am I left with? Do I need to makeshift my own hack system with messy code, or is there some source out there (that I don't know about) that has replicated this type of system in their own game. I would be very grateful to get some replies on how you might go about doing this, and will accept answers that can logically explain how you might implement such a system (code is not required). P.S. Id like to use pure JavaScript, and nothing else (even though it might be "reinventing the wheel", I also like to learn).

• Server 2008 unresponsive after SP2 install.

  I have a dev server that has an exact image of a production web server. The prod server only has SP1 installed on it. When I first fired up the dev box, the first thing I did was install SP2, and let it be. Almost every morning when I came in, the server was unusable. It would respond to ping, but RDP and the web site running on it were down. On the screen the screen saver was bouncing around, so it wasn't hard locked. But it was unresponsive to keyboard and mouse. So now I have to hard shut it down, but when it comes back up, the only thing in the event viewer is the unexpected shutdown, nothing else. I've since taken a fresh image of my prod box and put it on the dev server, and not installed SP2, and the dev box is humming along perfectly. I should also note that this is Server2k8 Web, 64bit Has anyone else seen anything like this?

• Outlook 2007 attachments wont preview

  When I get an email with an attachment in Outlook 2007 that I should be able to preview (ie - image, word doc, etc) I get the following error: This file cannot be previewed because of an error in the following previewer: Microsoft Outlook image previewer To open this file in its own program double-click it. (obviously the previewer changes name depending on the type) The computer is a clean install (it's only 5 days old) and I remember I was at one point able to preview within Outlook. I'd really like this feature to be back working, I've tried the usual exit Outlook, restart Windows, etc but to no avail.

• Latest update to Ubuntu 13.10 broke Intel graphics drivers

  I'm running a copy of Ubuntu 13.10 on an i7-4771 w/ Intel HD4600 Graphics using a Dell Ultrasharp 1440p monitor via Displayport. Up until today this configuration has been working perfectly, however the latest update appears to have broken my graphics configuration, and xorg is now refusing to go above 1280p resolution. Running xrandr it appears the driver incorrectly thinks my monitor is plugged into the HDMI port and is detecting a max resolution of 1920x1200 instead of 2560x1440. (It's actually plugged in via Displayport). Based on the apt history.log, the latest update was for the kernel. I'm presuming the issue is that the official Intel driver hasn't been updated to support this version? Is there any way to resolve this, or will I need to upgrade to 14.10 to get the latest driver from Intel? • How to change the install path of my Linux Source tree?

  I was trying to bring up my custom kernel. I did the following : make menuconfig && make modules && make modules_install && make install I would like to change the install PATH. How can i do that? I tried doing export INSTALL_PATH=<my custom path> But then it is only creating the vmlinux.bin(it is not creating the ramdisk image!!) But if i am not doing that, make install will automatically create the ramdisk image in the default /boot folder. How can i change that?? Thanks, Sen

• How do I fix the HDMI/DVI display output with Intel HD 4000 Graphics in 12.04?

  I have an Alienware Dell PC with Intel HD 4000 Graphics (Ivy Bridge) as verified by the output of lspci | grep VGA posted below. 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09) The PC only has HDMI and DVI display outputs and using the HDMI output I am only being offered abnormal resolutions. As you can see below it does not even list HDMI1 or DVI1 but just only a fallback. $ export DISPLAY=:0.0 && xrandr xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1360 x 768, maximum 1360 x 768 default connected 1360x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1360x768 0.0* 1024x768 0.0 800x600 0.0 640x480 0.0 How can I fix this? Does it just need to be configured differently or will I need to use a newer kernel (as Intel Graphics drivers are included in the kernel)?   Hi, I just developed a facebook game(mifia like), but the graphic I make is not good, because it is reference with some existing photo, trace with AI, and coloring it. Therefore, I invite my friend to join me, he is a graphic designer, own a company with his friend (I know both of them), for the share, I expect at least 70% for me, and at most 30% for them (both of them want to join). Therefore, they give me a counter offer, 60% for me and 40% for them, of course, I feel their counter offer is unacceptable because they only build the image in part time, and all the other work just like coding, webhosting...etc, is what I do in full time. Why they said they worth 40% is that they will make a good graphic, they can provide a advertise channel(on local magazine), etc... Actually, I don't think the game need advertisement on local magazine because the game is not target for local... Please give me some comments on this issue(is the share fair? what is the importance of the image of the game, is it worth more than 30%), or can anyone share the experience on this. • Rebuild an existing Rackspace server from scratch?

  In the process of working out kinks in a server build, is it possible to re-bootstrap a server from scratch, image and all? (Same flavor, say.) By that I mean without recreating the server, keeping its IP address if nothing else. I can't find a way to do this. It would have some advantages, I should think: It wouldn't decrement the 'server create' quota. The existing server would keep its IP address. One machine of a cluster could be rebuilt to a new image without having to change the IP address. (Maybe load balancers make IP addresses a moot point, but it still seems like a worthwhile task.)

• How to tune touchpad for smaller area?

  I just purchased the Asus Zenbook UX31A and I require some advice regarding tuning the touchpad. Basically my problem is that the mouse buttons are withing the touch area and I would like it to be disabled. Such that only part of the touch area is recognized. I have attached an image to clarify the idea. Basically only the red area in the image should be recognized. I have two reasons for this request. Firstly, I like to hold my thumb on the mouse button instead of holding it in the air. This is problematic, because touchpad thinks that I'm trying some kind of two finger gesture all the time and cursor stops moving. Clicking is also problematic since every finger movement -- regardless of how insignificant it might be -- on the "button" will move the cursor. I have been playing with some synclient settings like AreaBottomEdge etc. They have some effect but then I cannot highlight text or right button stops working. How could I solve this?

• Understanding IDAT chunk of PNG file format

  From the sample image below, I have a border in yellow just for display purposes only. The actual .png file is a simple black/white image 3 pixels by 3 pixels. I was originally thinking to try as a 2x2, but that would not help trying to interpret low/hi vs hi/low drawing stream. At least this way, I would have two black, one white from the top, or one white, two black from the bottom.. So I read the chunks of data, get to the IDAT chunk, decode that (zlib) and come up with 12 bytes as follows 00 20 00 40 00 80 So, my question, how does the above get broken down into the 3x3 black and white sample... Also, it is saved in palette format and properly recognizes the bit depth of 1 and color palette of 2... color pallet[0] is RGBA all zeros. Palette1 has RGBA of 255, 255, 255, 0 I'll eventually get into the multiple other depth formats later, just wanted to start with what would expect to be the easiest. Part II. Any guidance on handling the other depth formats would help if anything special to be considered especially regarding alpha channel (which I am already looking for in the palette) that might trip me up.

• Is it secure to store the cert/key on a private AMI?

  Are there any major security implications to bundling a private AMI which contains the private key/certificate & environment variables? For resiliency I'm creating an EC2 image which should be able to boot and configure itself without any intervention. After boot it will attempt to: Attach & mount specific EBS volume(s) Associate a specific Elastic IP Start issuing backups of the EBS volume(s) to S3 However, to do this it will need the private key/pem files and will need certain environment variables to be available on start-up. Since this is a private AMI I'm wondering if it will be "safe" to store these variables/files directly in the image so that I don't need to specify any user-data information and can therefore start a new instance remotely (from my iPhone, if needed) should the instance be terminated for any reason.

  So I'm having some problems with my collision detection with my platformer. Take the image below as an example. When my player jumps and walks right on the platform he goes right through. The same can also be observed when I jump on the actual platform, should I be resetting the players y in this situation?

• What do I need to know and how do I backup a recovery partition?

  I am in the possession of a HP laptop specifically the HP Folio Ultrabook. I need to make an image of the harddrive so that in the event it needs to be restored I can do so with the base operating system which is Windows 7 Professional as well as the HP recovery partition. I also need to backup all data that is on the laptop. Where do I start? What software can I use? Please limit these to freely available software or Linux I need to be able to backup the image to a file server and an external harddrive Is there anything else I need to do or know? • Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 CD 1 cannot boot: freeze at No Emulation

  Hi everyone. I've been interested in the Windows Server line of OSes, so since I apply for DreamSpark, I thought I'd go download it and try it. I just so happened to have an old desktop that I was using awhile ago for Windows XP, so I imaged the drive in preparation for it to be overwritten with the new OS. (This system has an Asus A7V8X-X motherboard, an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ processor, and 1GB of RAM.) I tried burning the first disk image on my newer desktop computer, running Windows XP, although the CD burner consistently failed at a particular track area from cd to cd, so it seemed like the burner was toast there. Fortunately, I had a laptop, so I transferred the images over to that, then burned the first disc there. First time around went great, and the burning program reported no errors. I then took the CD over to the computer that I was intending to install Server onto, set the BIOS to boot from the CD drive, then I booted it up. Like normal, after the POST, it printed "Boot from ATAPI CD-Rom: No Emulation", which I was used to seeing with bootable cds. I waited for the "Press any key to continue..." message that I had become so familiar with in windows discs, although I saw none. The computer sat there for about 5 seconds with the cd spinning, then it spun down like it was done reading it. Nothing else happened. No response from the keyboard. I tried again, same result. I then downloaded IMGBurn, and I put the burned cd into the laptop that burned it originally. I also downloaded a fresh image from the dreamspark site. I ran a verify session, and everything checked out. I later tried getting various DOS startup discs, then I tried booting the winnt binary, which supposedly initiates the installation process. Either the shells reported that not enough memory was available (since they would be running in low memory mode), or FreeDOS in particular would report Illegal instructions right away. Is the image corrupt at dreamspark, or am I doing something wrong?

• Automating repetitive game development tasks

  Disclaimer: this is an open-ended and kinda "far out" question Over the last few years I've made a few iPhone games. I use very common programs like Xcode and Illustrator to make the games. Lately I've become tired of repeating certain tasks over and over again. Here are some examples: in Xcode: "clean target, build, run" over and over again in Xcode: delete image resources and then import updated image resources (identical names) I'd like to automate these tasks in Xcode. Any ideas? I've done some automation in Photoshop using the "button mode" thing where you record a macro... that's been very useful. Here's the kinda wacky or "far out" part of the question: how can this automation be done via voice commands? (perhaps using a Nuance product or something) Here's an example of what I'd love to do via a few voice commands: Save artwork from illustrator at a user-specified size (@2x versions as well) Delete "someArt.png" and "[email protected]" from Xcode Add the updated versions of someArt.png to Xcode In Xcode: clean target, build, and run I know this question probably seems bizarre... but something like this could make certain things substantially easier for game developers. Edit: wonder if a combination of AppleScript and Nuance might work?
