• FreeBSD 9 (amd64) reboot/shutdown process is very slow

  I have a Dell Poweredge 2900 III with FreeBSD 9 (amd64), the server uses mfi wich handles a raid10, I had to reboot the server, but notice that either when rebooting or shutting down the server, something is going wrong, besides taking to much time to reboot/shutdown, after rebooting I notice that that some ldap instances within some jails could'nt start and this was because the database was corrupted. This make me think that probably something was wrong with the disks or mfi card, but checking the disk array / logs everything seems to be working fine. My set up is something like this: Host server has the minimum base of FreeBSD 9 amd64, within I create some jails, the ones contain services like mysql, email, and some others ldap. With FreeBSD 7 and 8 I didn't notice this behavior but with FreeBSD 9 something is not working well. I did a clean installation of FreeBSD 9 and root filesystem is using ZFS. • Have I created the recovery disk from recovery partition correctly?

  I was creating recovery disk from recovery partition on my Lenovo T400 with Windows 7. 6.5 GB of the recovery partition has been occupied. But in the process, I created three DVDs. I might remember wrong, but the first two DVDs were called by the wizard as disk 1, and the third one was called disk 2. The first one has been written 0.22 GB only. Following is the content of the DVD (right click the image and select view the image in a bigger size): The second one has been written 3.97 GB as follows: The third one has been written 2.44 GB as follows: I am allowed only one time to create recovery disk. So I cannot try again. So I was wondering if I missed something? How is the creation process supposed to be like? Thanks and regards!

• Upgrade manually-installed msi by assigning software through gpo

  In the past I rolled out software by manually installing it on a "golden" workstation, creating an (ghost)image from that and rolling that out to the other workstations. I try not to do that any more for simple/small software, and when possible (if it's an .msi) I assign the software through gpo. I'm having a problem with one of those. The software was manually installed on the image, which was rolled out, and now I have an update for that software (new msi) and I'd like to assign it through gpo. Don't know if it's relevant but it's user assigned. The new version gets installed alongside with the old version (this is possible since the program folder is different between those versions). When I install the same msi by hand, it properly removes/upgrades the old version though. Is what I am trying to do possible?

• Turn a Kindle into a Weather Display Station

  The e-ink display, network connectivity, and low-power consumption of Kindle ebook readers make them a perfect candidate for an infrequently refreshed high-visibility display–like a weather display. Read on to see how to hack a Kindle to serve up the local weather. Tinker and hardware hacker Matt Petroff hacked his Kindle to accept input from a web server and then, graciously and in the spirit of geeky projects everywhere, shared his source code. He explains the heart of the project: The server side of the system uses shell and Python scripts to convert weather forecast data into an image for the Kindle. The scripts first download and parse forecast data from NOAA via the National Digital Forecast Database XML/SOAP Service. After parsing the data, the data then needs to be converted into an image. This is accomplished by preprocessing a specially crafted SVG file to insert temperatures, forecast symbols, and days of the week. This SVG is then rendered as a PNG using rsvg-convert and converted to a grayscale, no transparency color space as required by the Kindle using pngcrush. Finally, it is copied to a public location on the web server. The Kindle is set to refresh twice a day (you could easily tweak the scripts for a more frequent refresh) and displays the forecast as seen in the photo above–with crisp and easy to read text and icons. • Optimising news fetching

  I have a web scraper for scraping news from different sources in wp7. My current appraoch for doing this is: load newspapers information from xml file. go to the specified sections and fetch the urls of the news items. go to each url and fetch headline, image, publisher. display using a MVVM architecture of windows phone. The whole thing takes place asynchronously...meaning as soon as url from a section of a newspaper is fetched it is added to the queue, and the second stage consisting of fetching headline, image etc starts... and as soon this is fetched even for one article, it is displayed. Later on as more articles are fetched, they are added on to the list. For the fetching purpose I am using a SmartThreadPool(http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/7933/Smart-Thread-Pool) for windows phone. My problem is that...even for fetching around 80 items (in total) from 9 publications, it is taking more than a minute. How can i speed up the procedure? Note: I have a two stage approach because many times the images are not available with headlines, and are only found in the article.

• Upgraded from 11.4 to 11.10, There was an error, now the system won't initiialize

  This morning the system gave me a message that my Version (11.4) was no longer supported, and I took the 'upgrade' option (- 11.10). While installing the various components I encountered a message to the effect that the there was an error and the system may have become unusable. Among the messges: E:Sup-process /usr/bin/dpkg received a segmentation fault...returned an error code (1). I was given an option to do several things, one of which seemed to mean that it would attempt to roll back to the previous version (the default), which I took. After the process ran it said the upgrade process had finished, but there were errors. I attempted to initialize a console so I could enter ubuntu-bug update-manager /var/log/dist-upgrade, per the instructions I received when I received the error message, but the console failed during initialization. I restarted the machine, and the screen has stopped with the following contents: * Starting bluetooth * Stopping save kernel messages * Starting CUPS printing spooler/server * PulseAudio configured per-user sessions saned disabled: edit /etc/default/saned $starting up Cisco VPN daemon *Starting anac(h)ronistic cron *Stopping anac(h)ronistic cron Each of these steps followed by [ OK ] What are my options? Any help appreciated!

  I would like to know the best way/best practice to handle the following situation. Suppose the project you are working on is split in two sub-projects: game engine lib editor gui. Now, you have a method bool Method( const MethodParams &params ) that will be called during game-level initialization. So it is a method belonging to the game engine lib. Now, the parameters of this method, passed as a reference the structure MethodParams can be decided via the editor, in the level design phase. Suppose the structure is the following: enum Enum1 { E1_VAL1, E1_VAL2, }; enum Enum2 { E2_VAL1, E2_VAL2, E2_VAL3, }; struct MethodParams { float value; Enum1 e1; Enum2 e2; // some other member } The editor should present a dialog that will let the user set the MethodParams struct. A text control for the field value. Furthermore, the editor needs to let the user set the fields e1 and e2 using, for example, two combo boxes (a combo box is a window control that has a list of choices). Obviously, every enum should be mapped to a string, so the user can make an informed selection (i have used E1_VAL1 etc.., but normally the enum would be more meaningful). One could even want to map every enum to a string more informative (E1_VAL1 to "Image union algorithm", E1_VAL2 to "Image intersection algorithm" and so on...). The editor will include all the relevant game egine lib files (.h etc...), but this mapping is not automatic and i am confused on how to handle it in a way that, if in future i add E1_VAL3 and E1_VAL4, the code change will be minimal.

• Recover a Parallel Desktop 3 virtual machine in VirtualBox

  I have an old HDD image file that was used with Parallels Desktop 3. Ideally I'd like to use it in VirtualBox (conversion). In all the tutorials I found (like this one or that one) the VM must be started: there's the problem. I don't have the machine where Parallel 3 was installed anymore. I tried installing the trial version of the last version of Parallels (9) but it seem it doesn't offer the possibility to import an old VM. So here's the question: Given I can't boot the VM with Parallels Desktop, is there a way to convert the image file to another format that is bootable in VirtualBox? If it changes anything, the host is MacOS X 10.9, the guest is Windows XP.

• What is Paging in memory management?

  I was just reading Operating System Principles by Silberschatz et al when I came across paging in memory management.I'm slightly confused about it. It states that Physical Memory(I assume it's RAM) is divided into frames, and logical memory is divided into pages. CPU generates logical addresses containing page number and an offset. This page number is used to retrieve the frame number from a page table which gives the base address so the physical address is calculated as base+offset. My question is: is the page table maintained for every process? I logically think that the answer would be yes as every process will need to map its own pages to frames. I may be wrong. Please clarify. Also: paging and segmentation(where 'holes' are created in memory) are two totally different techniques that are not used in combination. Correct?

• .htaccess URL rewrite to multi-parameter item

  I just spent the last 10 hours of my life on this & am running in circles, so was hoping someone may be able to help me. I want a specific URL to load like this: http://example.com/f/2011/image.png?attribute=small When a URL in a format such as this hits, I'd like to rewrite it to hit the server as: http://example.com/generate.php?f=2011/image.png&attribute=small Based on above, my question is two-fold: How can I rewrite the URL in htaccess to meet my requirements above? If the original URL didn't have the attribute query string parameter, how can I ensure attribute will be false/blank/etc when it hits the server via htaccess?

• Apache trailing slash added to files problem

  Hello! I am having a problem with Apache. What it does is this: Take /index.php file containing an code with src set to relative path myimg.jpg, both in the root of my server. So, www.mysite.com would show the image as would www.mysite.com/index.php. However, if I access www.mysite.com/index.php/ (with a trailing slash) it does the odd thing of executing index.php code as it would be inside an index.php folder (e.g. /index.php/index.php), thus not showing the image anymore. This is a simple example that's easy to solve with absolte addressing etc, the problem I am getting from this a security one that's not so easily fixed. So, how can I get Apache to give a 403 or 404 when files are accessed "as folders"? Thank you.

• Can Windows Home Server be used on an active directory domain?

  The situation: an Active Directory network with a few dozen machines. Most of the machines have the same vanilla image applied to them so if there was a hard drive failure getting the machine back up to the standard network image would be quick and easy. However, there are a handful of (eight) machines which have rather unique setups (accounting, developers, the "artist" with CS4 and such). For these machines we would like to use Windows Home Server since the backups are automatic and recovery from a machine failure is quite painless. The question though is whether or not WHS can be used on an A/D network. If not, what "set it and forget it" backup/imaging product is recommended for this scenario?

I searched this over the net and on Ubuntu website but nobody has given the complete steps . someone say u can install from the Ubuntu also ,someone says u can do a fresh installation from usb pen drive u need to make you pen drive bootable etc. etc. . My problem is that i don't know the exact steps how ton install Ubuntu from usb pen drive? All I want to do is to completely remove my Ubuntu 11.04 and install Ubuntu 12.04 from usb pen-drive. Can any body tell me how to make a pen drive bootable ? How to install Ubuntu 12.04 from pen-drive? Please give me a step by step procedure. please explain me how to do it step by step . • How do I move an Amazon micro instance to a small instance?

  I want to move my instance to a micro instance to a small instance but when I try to launch a new AMI based on my Micro instance AMI it only gives me the option for 64 bit instances. My initial ami is based off an ubuntu 10.04 image. Is it not possible to move between 64 bit and 32 bit instance? Would it be possible to use a load balancer to have a 32bit instance and a 64bit instance work together? I have a website/web app that I will be uploading huge volumes of data to. I will be starting with 65gigs of images and then moving up to 100+ gigs of images. I am not sure which instance type would be best for this. I was going to use a load balancer and auto scaling to increase the number of instance when the load is high. Also when using a load balancer, does one of the AMI instance become the primary image and the rest act as clones of it?

• XNA 2D vehicle wall collisions

  I am attempting to implement collisions for my truck game, where the truck can drive around the world and hit walls surrounding the level and various randomly placed walls within the level. I am able to get direct collisions working correctly. However, it is getting very complicated and tricky very quickly. I am trying to accommodate various other collisions such as when a truck is against the wall then turns an adjacent direction or when they reverse into a wall. Both of these result in a slight collision as the image of the truck flips around to the direction the player wants to move. All of this has resulted in a whole lot of if statements to check how I should be fixing the collision. This in turn makes the player jump to random locations and "teleport" around corners, etc. The rest of my game is fine, I am not completely new to game development or C# for that matter. • Photoshop changes colors when moved to a different monitor

  This Yahoo! answers question pretty much sums up my predicament. Unfortunately I haven't really found an actual answer. Here's a screen shot of what happens when I place Photoshop between my monitors. Imagine that the left side of my laptop is the right square and the yellow is the right side of my monitor. When I move the program to one side fully or the other, it takes on the corresponding color. Obviously the color on the right is correct and Photoshop is changing the color of the image when it moves to my external monitor. Also notice how none of the tools or anything are different colors, just the actual image itself. How do I fix this? EDIT You may also notice that the color palette in the left corner is showing that yellow tinge. I didn't actually pick that yellow color, it's supposed to be showing the grey on the left that I used to fill in the square.

• Cron process not starting

  I have an ec2 image created with cron jobs. These jobs fail to run; I discovered the cron process in itself has not started. So, I included /usr/sbin/cron in /etc/rc.d/rc.local and created another image. But still for some reason the cron process does not start on bootup. If I restart the machine, the cron process runs. It doesn't run when it boots up! Any reason why this is happening? Also, is there any other alternatives for this ?

  Hi, a program I am using tracks down my diskdrives and offers to write a dvd image to them. I would like to be able to write this image on HD in stead of on disk, but I have no option to browse the file system. Therefore I would like a virtual dvd disk, that is in fact a folder, but that is recognized by the app. as a real, empty dvd. I have tried MagicDisk, but it doesn't seem to offer the ability to couple an emulated disk drive to a folder...

• virtual machines: optimal host os to run Windows XP guest os?

  My department doesn't have the budget to upgrade my ailing Dell D620 laptop. However, I do have the option to buy my own personal computer, then use my company-issued ISO image to run Windows XP as my guest os using virtualbox or vmware. Therefore, last month, I bought an Acer AX3910-U3012 desktop that had Windows 7 as the host os (and 8G RAM). In short, I was disappointed with the performance while trying to run WinXP as the guest os. (It didn't perform much better than my laptop.) Just wondering what the optimal host os would be for running Windows XP as the guest os? (No, I can't use my company-issued ISO image to build the os for my personal computer.) FWIW, I'm willing to spend up to $2k if it's REALLY worth it, but would prefer to spend no more than $1k. Also, in an effort to cut costs, I'd prefer buy a desktop instead of a laptop. • 16-bit PNGs in Slick2D

  I'm working on a project and I'm using some 3rd party sprites just to get it off the ground; recently I've come into a hitch. Slick2D doesn't seem to want to load my images. That is, it will warn me that images are the wrong bit-depth. All the images are in 16-bit PNG form (PNG is required for transparency). Is there any way I can disable the warning (being the bad guy programmer (the console print for each individual load REALLY SLOWS DOWN the image)) or is there another solution? I was thinking about converting all images (using imagemagick) to .gif (with an alpha channel). Would there be any loss in quality between formats? EDIT: I tried using imagemagick but some of the sprites use pure black so I can't do that without wrecking the image. EDIT2: using "identify" on any of the images show them as being 8-bit.. but Slick2D won't load them. What the hell? D: EDIT3: Issue solved (ish). If you are googling this then just disable the java png loader from slick by sticking this somewhere in your code (like the main method): System.setProperty("org.newdawn.slick.pngloader", "false");
