  • Multi table Triggers SQL Server noob

    I have a load of tables all with the same 2 datetime columns (lastModDate, dateAdded). I am wondering if I can set up global Insert Update trigger for these tables to set the datetime values. Or if not, what approaches are there? Any pointers much appreciated

    I have two tables, events and photos, which relate together via the 'Event_ID' column. I wish to select ONE random photo from each event and display them. How can I do this? I have the following which displays all the photos which are associated. How can I limit it to one per event?   • SQL Server 2008 + expensive union all

    Hi al, we have 5 tables over which we should query with user search input throughout a stored procedure. We do a union all of the similar data inside a view. Because of this the view can not be materialized. We are not able to change these 5 tables drastically (like creating a 6th table that contains the similar data of the 5 tables and reference that new one from the 5 tables). The query is rather expensive / slow what are our other options? It's allowed to think outside the box. Unfortunately I cannot give more information like the table/view/SP definition because of customer confidentiality... greetings, Tim

  • Creating a stored procedure in SQL Server 2008 that will do a "facebook search"

    Hello, I'm trying to implement a facebook search in my system (auto suggest while typing). I've managed to code all the ajax stuff, but I'm not sure how to query the database. I've created a table called People which contains the fields: ID, FirstName, LastName, MiddleName, Email. I've also created a FTS-index on all those fields. I want to create a stored procedure that will get as a parameter the text inserted in the query box and returns the suggestions. For example, When I will write in the textbox the query "Joh Do" It will translate to the query: select * from People where contains(*, '"Joh*"') and contains(*, '"Do*"') Is there a way to do that in stored procedure? P.S I've tried to use the syntax select * from People where contains(*,'"Joh*" and "Do*"') but it didn't returned the expected results, probably because it needs to search the words on different fields. Is there a way to fix that? Thanks.

Is this possible? The Group will have more entries added to it, so as new GroupID's are added can the partition's be made dynamically?

    i see after installing the asp.net membership tables, they use the data type "uniqueidentifier" for all of the primary key fields. I have been using "int" data type and doing increment by one on inserts. Is there any particular benefits to using the uniqueIdentifier data type compared to my current model of using int and auto increments on new inserts ?

    Normally, I would use a PHP webservice to do this, but since the front-end is hosted on a linux box, I need another way to do this (so I don't have to go through the trouble of installing FreeTDS, etc. I will if I have to). Is there a better way to do this? I'm not a web guy, but I'm trying my best.

    After moving a Delphi 2009 application from a Windows 2003 / Citrix environment to a 64 bit Windows 2008 R2 environment (users now use RDP instead of Citrix), there are frequent runtime errors which are caused by a double exection of a menu item click handler.   • How to refresh database data only in SQL Server

    So I want to copy just the data from a Prod database (SQL 2005) down to my local machine (SQL 2005 & SQL 2008 Management Studio installed). The problem is I'm running into foreign key constraints that are causing the task/scripts to fail. I can get by these errors if I import certain tables first, but is there an easier way to do this all at once? I'm not a DBA so I don't have access to the database back up. I've tried the SQL Import/Export data Wizard and Publishing Wizard, but it also gets the PK error.

    hi, i need to update a database where some of the table have changed (columns have been added). I want to perform this action in a proper transaction. If the code executes without any problem then i will commit the changes otherwise i will rollback the database back to its original state. I want to do something like this: BEGIN TRANSACTION ...Execute some sql statements here COMMIT TRANSACTION (When every thing goes well) ROLLBACK TRANSACTION (When something goes wrong) Please tell me what is the best way to do this i know there is a @@TranCount variable but dont know its exact purpose.   • Figuring out the resource a lock in SQL Server 2000 affects

    I am adding a simple web-interface to show data from a commercial off the shelf (COTS) application. This COTS issues locks on any record the user is actively looking at (whether they intend to edit and update it or not). I have found sp_lock and the Microsoft sp_lock2 scripts and can see the locks, so that's all well and good. However, I cannot figure out how I can tell if a specific record I am about to update has been affected by one of these locks. If I submit the update request and there is in fact a lock, the web-interface will wait indefinitely until the user closes the window in the COTS. How can I either: a) determine before issuing an update that the record has been locked OR b) issue an update that will immediately return with a LOCKED status rather than indefinitely waiting on the COTS user to close their window on that record?
