• Ubuntu: move logs from /dev/tty8 to different terminal /dev/tty12 or get rid of it.

  I want to know how to move or get rid of /dev/tty8 log output in Ubuntu 9.10. /dev/tty7 is my regular X session. When I am switching user to test account where I can try and test setups and configs I am at next available console i.e. /dev/tty9 because /dev/tty8 is taken by log output. Where can I configure this ? All I've found related to /dev/tty8 is commented lines in /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf. I changed it like that: daemon,mail.*;\ news.=crit;news.=err;news.=notice;\ *.=debug;*.=info;\ *.=notice;*.=warn /dev/tty12 And I've got nice log output on /dev/tty12 but where is configuration for log output on /dev/tty8. How can I change it?

• SMART says disk failure is imminent due to bad blocks, what do I need to do?

  I have on my hard drive 2 OSes: Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows Vista (I keep it just because of school). Everything was OK on both OSes, but one day on Ubuntu I was getting awkward noises from my notebooks' hard drive and then everything stopped and I couldn't do anything. On Windows everything was OK. Every time I boot Ubuntu I can get 5 minutes normal run time, without problems. After that the hard drive sounds crazy and nothing works. I could run S.M.A.R.T tests from a older Ubuntu CD (10.04) from the GUI (Disk Utility, or something like that and from terminal). From the GUI, I got that the DISK FAILURE IS IMMINENT and I have ~700 bad blocks (or broken blocks, I had that test I while ago) on my HDD. From the terminal (I don't remember if it was fsck or a SMART test command) I got that the HDD will fail in under 24 hours. Since then it passed 2-3 weeks. I've tried "badblocks" but after 10 hours it was still running and I had to stop it. Now I have to use cygwin and other alternatives for my Linux apps on Windows. How can I separate the bad blocks from Ubuntu so it wouldn't use them? Please help.

• Loading guest OS's (Windows) localhost through my host's (Mountain Lion) browsers

  For work, I have to develop in Visual Studio, which I run via VMware's fusion 5. I really want to test via my mac's native browsers for a multitude of reasons. that is, view the IIs web stuffs that my windows VM should expose, in my mac's own native Firefox, Chrome... etc. if i could expose a pretty url, that would be even better, but i would certainly settle for an ugly IP :) I got a decent number of views but no response when I asked in VMware's own boards. Everyone seems to want to go the other direction (developing in sublimetext/textmate serving up through MAMP and exposing it to windows browsers to test) and there seems to be tried a true solutions for this. unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your preference) my startup is pretty entrenched in the visual studio development tools. I'm really hoping that someone knows the answer to this. Thanks :)

• Server 2008 won't run executables from CMD prompt without .exe extension

  On one of our production server 2008 boxes, I cannot run executables from a CMD prompt without supplying the full filename, including the '.exe' extension. For example, when running "java" produced the usual "is not recognized as an internal or external command" message, I assumed I had borked the path and/or java_home variables. However, even navigating to the %java_home%\bin directory and typing "java" produced the same error. If I type "java.exe" instead, all works perfectly. The problem does not only affect java.exe. Even Microsoft executables suffer the same problem -- ping fails, ping.exe works; ipconfig fails, ipconfig.exe works; manually created batch file 'test' only works when invoked explicitly as 'test.bat'. Any bright ideas?

In this post I will show you how to use OOB windows network load balancing to distribute load for SharePoint2010 site. 1. Install SharePoint in another server WFE Two (you can follow the steps in my last post), but instead of choosing create new Farm, you need to select “connect to existing farm” this time. 2. Click next then click retrieve database names button and select the farm configuration database. 3. Click next and enter the passphrase you specified when you first installed the SharePoint Farm. 4. Click the advanced settings and select Use this machine to host the web site. 5. Click OK to finish the configurations 6. Next, Install NLB in the two WFE (web front end) SharePoint servers 7. Configure NLB to create the cluster. Go to Start—Administrative Tools—Network Load Balancing Manager 8. Right-click the Network Load Balancing Clusters Node and select New Cluster. 9. Type in the host name that is to be part of the new cluster. 10. Type in the IP address for the cluster. 11. Select the Multicast for this cluster.(The default one is Unicast) 12. You can configure the Port Rules for the clustering , but I will leave the default here. 13. Add another WEF to the cluster. 14. Type in the host name that is to be part of the new cluster. 15. Set the Priority to 2. 16. Click Next to complete the cluster setup. 17. Create an entry in the DNS for the new cluster. 18. Add the binding to the IIS site in the IIS Manager 19. Change the Alternate access mapping for you default site collection from http://sp2010wefone to http://team 20. Browse to http://Team , you will be redirected to the SharePoint site.

  Welcome to my blog! I am Frédéric Desbiens, a new member of the ADF Product Management team.  I joined Oracle only a few weeks ago. My boss is Grant Ronald, and I have the privilege to work in the same team as Susan Duncan, Frank Nimphius, Lynn Munsinger and Chris Muir. I share with them a passion for all things Java and ADF. With this blog, I hope to help you be more successful with our products – whether you are a customer or a partner. You may have heard of me before. Maybe you have my book in your bookshelf; or maybe we met at a conference. I went to JavaOne, ODTUG Kaleidoscope and Oracle OpenWorld in the past, when I worked for a major consulting firm. I will spare you all the details of my career; you can have a look at my LinkedIn profile if you are curious about my past.  Usually, my posts will be of a technical nature, and will focus on Oracle ADF and Oracle JDeveloper. SOA and portals have always been two topics of interest for me, however, and I will write about them. Over time, you will probably get acquainted with my « strategic » side as well. I devour history books, and always had a tendency to look at the big picture. I will probably not resist to the temptation of mixing IT and history, but this will be occasional, I promise!  At this point, I owe you an explanation about the title of the blog. I am French-Canadian, and wanted to evoke my roots in an obvious yet unobtrusive way. I was born in Chicoutimi, which is one of the main cities found in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. Traditionally, a large part of the wild blueberry production of the province of Québec come from there. A common nickname for the inhabitants is thus Les Bleuets, « The Blueberries » in English. • About shared (static) Members and its behavior

  I just realized that I can access shared members from instances of classes (probably this is not correct, but compile and run), and also learn/discover that, I can modify shared members, then create a new instance and access the new value of the shared member. My question is, what happens to the shared members, when it comes back to the "default" value (class declaration), how dangerous is it do this ? is it totally bad ? is it valid in some cases ?. If you want to test my point here is the code (console project vb.net) that I used to test shared members, as you can see/compile/run, the shared member "x" of the class "Hello" has default value string "Default", but at runtime it changes it, and after creating a new object of that class, this object has the new value of the shared member. • Accessing local files through an http:// address

  I would like to access a folder of mp3 files on my local Windows machine through http:// addresses. For example, typing http://localhost:9999/songs/test.mp3 into my browser would play test.mp3, which sits in a specified folder on my C: drive. What is the very simplest way to do this? (Background: a program I'm using wants me to enter the URLs of these files, but assumes they are remote and accessed over http. It doesn't accept URLs of the form file://C/Users.... So, I'd like to give these local files addresses that makes them "look" remote.)

• Getting Unity 3D working on legacy Nvidia card

  I installed the latest nVIDIA drivers for my FX5500 card. I understand that the X server version does not officially support this driver or card but was wondering what I can do to get compiz running. I have researched for hours on this issue but cannot come up with an answer for myself. I might be doing all this for nothing but I wanted to at least try. • How to suggest using an ORM instead of stored procedures?

  I work at a company that only uses stored procedures for all data access, which makes it very annoying to keep our local databases in sync as every commit we have to run new procs. I have used some basic ORMs in the past and I find the experience much better and cleaner. I'd like to suggest to the development manager and rest of the team that we look into using an ORM Of some kind for future development (the rest of the team are only familiar with stored procedures and have never used anything else). The current architecture is .NET 3.5 written like .NET 1.1, with "god classes" that use a strange implementation of ActiveRecord and return untyped DataSets which are looped over in code-behind files - the classes work something like this: class Foo { public bool LoadFoo() { bool blnResult = false; if (this.FooID == 0) { throw new Exception("FooID must be set before calling this method."); } DataSet ds = // ... call to Sproc if (ds.Tables[0].Rows.Count > 0) { foo.FooName = ds.Tables[0].Rows[0]["FooName"].ToString(); // other properties set blnResult = true; } return blnResult; } } // Consumer Foo foo = new Foo(); foo.FooID = 1234; foo.LoadFoo(); // do stuff with foo... There is pretty much no application of any design patterns. There are no tests whatsoever (nobody else knows how to write unit tests, and testing is done through manually loading up the website and poking around). Looking through our database we have: 199 tables, 13 views, a whopping 926 stored procedures and 93 functions. About 30 or so tables are used for batch jobs or external things, the remainder are used in our core application. Is it even worth pursuing a different approach in this scenario? I'm talking about moving forward only since we aren't allowed to refactor the existing code since "it works" so we cannot change the existing classes to use an ORM, but I don't know how often we add brand new modules instead of adding to/fixing current modules so I'm not sure if an ORM is the right approach (too much invested in stored procedures and DataSets). If it is the right choice, how should I present the case for using one? Off the top of my head the only benefits I can think of is having cleaner code (although it might not be, since the current architecture isn't built with ORMs in mind so we would basically be jury-rigging ORMs on to future modules but the old ones would still be using the DataSets) and less hassle to have to remember what procedure scripts have been run and which need to be run, etc. but that's it, and I don't know how compelling an argument that would be. Maintainability is another concern but one that nobody except me seems to be concerned about.

• How can I connect to my Airport Extreme Shared Disk using Windows?

  I have a shared disk attached to my Airport Extreme, which I can connect to remotely in OS X through the finder via command - k, and entering in the proper address: afp://test.dyndns.org:1111 1111 being the port I've reserved for the disk in the AE port mapping. This is such a great feature, but I don't always have access to a Mac. My question is how can I connect to this drive via Windows XP? Please note, that the shared drive is a Drobo FS and formatted to handle both Windows and Mac OS. I've tried mapping a network drive via My Computer - Tools - Map Network Drive and entering: \\test.dyndns.org:1111\Drobo-Name I've also tried Start - Run and entering the same, both with and without the port #.

• IPv6 tunnels - any easy way to turn them on and off?

  I've set up a tunnelbroker.net (Hurricane Electric) IPv6 tunnel from my laptop running 12.04. Works fine, and allows me to test the dual-stack configuration on my remote webservers etc. until native IPv6 is available on my ISP. However, there are times when I don't want the tunnel. For example if I'm accessing something that requires an IPv4 address in my own country rather than the Tunnelbroker tunnel endpoint, or if I'm away from the local IPv4 tunnel endpoint, or if I simply want to test without IPv6. Is there a simple way to disable and then re-enable the IPv6 tunnel, without rebooting? For context, here's what's in my /etc/network/interfaces (NNN replaces numbers): auto he-ipv6 iface he-ipv6 inet6 v4tunnel endpoint 216.218.NNN.NNN address 2001:470:NNN:NNN::2 netmask 64 up ip -6 route add default dev he-ipv6 down ip -6 route del default dev he-ipv6 Is there a network manager application (gui or command line) to selectively enable/disable parts of /etc/network/interfaces, or IPv6 in general? I found even by commenting out that out (and reloading networking) it's tough to get the IPv6 to go away. A "tunnel on/off" button in networking would be great, like using a VPN.
