• Ubuntu: The Movie

  Since Ubuntu is the most popular distribution and has made a lot of changes in many places around the globe and in different industries up to the point where even people that do not know what Linux is, they know what Ubuntu is (go figure? ) there might be a movie coming someday (like the social network for Facebook or Revolution OS for Linux/Red Hat) i wanted to know how it all came to be from the actual players in the show. UBUNTU: The Movie Since i have seen several of the primary characters of the movie here, this might be a good place to start on how it all came to be. Not in the traditional wikipedia way or the ubuntu help section, but in the what the actual developers have in mind on how it all went down to the point of having a huge amount of users, an incredible level sophistication in the forum, help sections, installers, etc.. This is just to have the KNOW HOW before the actual movie makes it out some day in the future. As a fan of Ubuntu this is a MOST KNOW! ;) Hope i made some people happy and some other shy hehe.

• Is there a way communicate or measure levels of abstraction?

  I'll be the first to say that this question is a bit... out there. But here are a couple questions I bear in mind : Is abstraction continuous or discrete? Is there a single unit of abstraction? But I'm not sure those questions are truly answerable or even really makes sence. My naive answer would be something along the lines of abitrarily discrete but not necescarily having a single unit measure. Here's what I mean... Take a Black Labrador; an abstraction that could be made is that a Black Lab is a type of animal. [Animal]<--[Black Lab] A Black Lab is also a type of Dog. [Dog]<--[Black Lab] One way to establish a degree of abstraction is by comparing the two the abstractions. We could say that [Animal] is more abstract than [Dog] in respect to a Black Lab. It just so happens [Animal] can also be used as an abstraction of [Dog] So, we might end up with something like [Animal]<--[Dog]<--[Black Lab] With the model above, one might be inclined to say that there's two hops of abstraction to get from [Black Lab] to [Animal]. But you can't exactly tell somebody they need one level abstraction and reasonalby expect they will come up with [Dog] given they aren't explicity given the options above. If I needed to tell someobody in a single email that they needed an abstract class with out knowing what that abstract class is, is there a way to communaticate a degree of abstraction such that they might end up on Dog instead of Animal? As a side note, what area of study might this type of analysis fall under?

• Web workflow solution - how should I approach the design?

  We've been tasked with creating a web based workflow tool to track change management. It has a single workflow with multiple synchronous tasks for the most part, but branch out at a point to tasks running in parallel which meet up later on. There will be all sorts of people using the application, and all of them will need to see their outstanding tasks for each change, but only theirs, not others. There will also be a high level group of people who oversee all changes, so need to see everything. They will need to see tasks which have not been done in the specified time, who's responsible etc. The data will be persisted to a SQL database. It'll all be put together using .Net. I've been trying to learn and implement OOP into my designs of late, but I'm wondering if this is moot in this instance as it may be better to have the business logic for this in stored procedures in the DB. I could use POCO's, a front end layer and a data access layer for the web application and just use it as a mechanism for CRUD actions on the DB, then use SP's fired in the DB to apply the business rules. On the other hand, I could use an object oriented design within the web app, but as the data in the app is state-less, is this a bad idea? I could try and model out the whole application into a class structure, implementing interfaces, base classes and all that good stuff. So I would create a change class, which contained a list of task classes/types, which defined each task, and implement an ITask interface etc. Put end-user types into the tasks to identify who should be doing what task. Then apply all the business logic in the respective class methods etc. What approach do you guys think I should be using for this solution?

  How is the average organization doing? Not very well according to a number of recent books and reports. A few indicators provide quite a gloomy picture: Return on assets and invested capitals dropped to 25% of its value in 1965 in the entire US market (see The Shift Index by John Hagel) Firms are dying faster and faster with the average lifespan of companies listed in the S&P 500 index gone from 67 years in the 1920s to 15 years today (see Creative Disruption by Richard Foster) Employee engagement ratio, a high level indicator of an organization’s health proved to affect performance outcomes, does not exceed on average 20%-30% (see Employee Engagement, Gallup or The Engagement Gap, Towers Perrin) In one of the most enjoyable keynotes of the Social Business Forum 2012, Steve Denning (Author of Radical Management and Independent Management Consultant) explained why this is happening and especially what leaders should do to reverse the worrying trends. In this Social Business Thought Leaders series, we asked Steve to collapse some key suggestions in a 2 minutes video that we strongly recommend. Steve discusses traditional management - that set of principles and practices born in the early 20th century and largely inspired by thinkers such as Frederick Taylor and Henry Ford - as the main responsible for the declining performance of modern organizations. While so many things have changed in the last 100 or so years, most companies are in fact still primarily focused on maximizing profits and efficiency, cutting costs, coordinating individuals top-down through command and control. The issue is, in a knowledge intensive, customer centred, turbulent market like the one we are experiencing, similar concepts are not just alienating employees' passion but also destroying the last source of competitive differentiation left: creativity and the innovative potential. • Algorithm for a lucky game [on hold]

  Assume we have the following Keno(lottery type) game: From 80 numbers(from 1 to 80), 20 are being drawn. The players choose 1 or 2 or 3..... or 12 numbers to play(12 categories). If they choose for example 4 then they win if they predict correctly a certain amount of numbers(2,3 or 4) from the 4 they have played and lose if the predict only 1 or 0 numbers. They win X times their money accordingly to some predefined factor depending on how many numbers they predict from each category. The same with the other categories. And e.g 11 out of 11 gives 250000 times your money and 12 out of 12 gives 1000000 your money. So the company would want to avoid winnings so high. Every draw by the company is being made every 5 minutes and in each draw around 120000 (let's say) different predictions(Keno tickets) are being played. Let's assume 12000 are being played in category 10 and 12000 in category 11 and also 12000 in category 12. I'm wondering if there is an algorithm to allow the company that provides the game in the 5 minutes between the drawings, to find a 20 number set, in order to avoid any "12 out of 12" and "11 out of 11" and "11 out of 12" and "10 out of 11" and "10 out of 10" winning ticket. That means is there any algorithm, where in a time of less than 1 minute approximately(in todays hardware), to be able to find a 20 number set so that none of the 12000 12 and 11 and 10 number sets that the players played(in categories 10,11 and 12) contains any winning of "12 out of 12" and "11 out of 11" and "11 out of 12" and "10 out of 11" and "10 out of 10"? Or even better the generalization of the problem: What is the best algorithm(from a perspective of minimal time), to be able to find a Y number set from numbers 1 to Z(e.g Y=20, Z=80) so that none of the X sets of K-numbers that are being played(in category K) contains more than K-m numbers from the Y-set? (Note that for Y=K and m=1 there is a practical algorithm.)

• How do I classify using GLCM and SVM Classifier in Matlab?

  I'm on a project of liver tumor segmentation and classification. I used Region Growing and FCM for liver and tumor segmentation respectively. Then, I used Gray Level Co-occurence matrix for texture feature extraction. I have to use Support Vector Machine for Classification. But I don't know how to normalize the feature vectors. Can anyone tell how to program it in Matlab? To the GLCM program, I gave the tumor segmented image as input. Was I correct? If so, I think, then, my output will also be correct. • Building a common syntax and scoping framework.

  Hello fellow programmers, I was discussing a project the other day with a colleague of mine and I was curious to see what others had to say or if such a thing already existed. Background There are many programming languages. There are many IDE's and source editors that highlight and edit source code. Following perfectly and exactly the rules of a language to present auto-complete options and understand scopes in the code is rather complex. This task is complex enough that most IDE's implement different source-editors as plugins that often re-implement the same features over and over but in a different way (netbeans). From what I can tell most IDE's and source editors re-implement parsers that use regular expressions, or some meta-syntax Naur Form to describe the languages grammer generically. These parsers are implemented over and over and over again. Question Has anyone attempted to unify or describe a set of features through an API and have a consistent interface to parsing various programming languages and dialects. I'm not describing an IDE - but a consistent API for any program to use to parse and obtain meta-information from the source code. I realize various programming languages offer many different features which are difficult to 'abstract' into a set of features, but I feel this would be a worthwhile venture. It seems to me that this could possibly allow the authors of interpreters to help maintain a central grammer intepreter for their language. the Python foundation could maintain the Python grammer api, ANSI the C grammer api, Oracle the Java grammer API, etc Example usage If this was API existed code documentation generators could theoretically work across all dialects and languages to some level. It wouldn't matter if your project used 5 different languages a single application could document all of them and the comments and doc-tags within. Has anyone attempted this comprehensively?

• UI message passing programming paradigm

  I recently (about two months ago) read an article that explained some user interface paradigm that I can't remember the name of and I also can't find the article anymore. The paradigm allows for decoupling the user interface and backend through message passing (via some queueing implementation). So each user action results in a message being pased to the backend. The user interface is then updated to inform the user that his request is being processed. The assumption is that a user interface is stale by definition. When you read data from some store into memory, it is stale because another transaction may be updating the same data already. If you assume this, it makes no sense to try to represent the 'current' database state in the user interface (so the delay introduced by passing messages to a backend doesn't matter). If I remember correctly, the article also mentioned a read-optimized data store for rendering the user interface. The article assumed a high-traffic web application. A primary reason for using a message queue communicating with the backend is performance: returning control to the user as soon as possible. Updating backend stores is handled by another process and eventually these changes also become visible to the user. I hope I have explained accurately enough what I'm looking for. If someone can provide some pointers to what I'm looking for, thanks very much in advance.

Using CDC we get full audit capabilities with absolutely no implementation code: we can see all changes made to a specific table, including the old and new values!   A couple of months back I wrote a blog post entitled Microsoft, OData and RDF where I gave a high level view of the OData protocol and how it compares to RDF. I talked about linked data, triples and such like which may have been somewhat useful however jargon-heavy. Earlier today Dr Michael Hausenblas (blog | twitter) offered an analogy which I think is probably more useful and with Michael's permission I'm re-posting it here:Imagine a Web (a Web of Documents, if you wish), which is not based on HTML and hyperlinks, but on MS Word documents. The documents are all available on the Internet, so you can download them and consume the content. But after you’re done with a certain document that talks about a book, how do you learn more about it? For example, reviews about the book or where you can purchase it? Maybe the original document mentions that there is some more related information on another server. So you’d need to go there and look for the related bit of information yourself. You see? That’s what the Web is great at – you just click on a hyperlink and it takes you to the document (or section) you’re interested in. All the legwork is taken care of for you through HTML, URIs and HTTP.Hm, right, but how is this related to OData? Well, OData feels a bit like the above mentioned scenario, just concerning data. • when to introduce an application services tier in an n-tier application

  I am developing a web based application whose primary objective is to fetch data from the database, display it on the UI, take in user inputs and write them back to the database. The application is not going to be doing any industrial strength algorithm crunching, but will be receiving a very high number of hits at peak times (described below) which will be changing thru the day. The layers are your typical Presentation, Business, Data. The data layer is taken care of by the database server. The business layer will contain the DAL component to access the database server over tcp. The choices I have to separate these layers into tiers are: The presentation and business layers can be either kept on the same tier. The presentation layer on a separate tier by itself and the business layer on a separate tier by itself. In the case of choice 2, the business layer will be accessed by the presentation layer using a WCF service either over http or tcp. I don't see any heavy processing being done on the Business layer, so I am leaning towards option 1 above. I also feel for the same reason, adding a new tier will only introduce the network latency. However, in terms of scalability in case I need to scale up or scale out, which is a better way to go? This application will need to be able to support up to 6 million users an hour. There will be a reasonable amount of data in each user session, storing user's preferences and other details. I will be using page level caching as well.

• Cannot connect Ubunto to Windows pc either direction

  New to ubuntu and really struggling with this. I want to connect to my old windows XP Pc on our home network. Searching for solutions gets complicated as at one level you are told use Connect to Server. I set to Windows Share, type in server IP address.. ... I get "Failed to retrieve share list from server" Demo on Youtube worked with no problem. Other advice in ask ubuntu is you need to install samba. Did that but nothing seems to happen when I try and run it other than it asking for admin password. (How do you tell what is running on Ubuntu?) So I try the other direction Windows XP to Ubuntu. I made the ubuntu directory within home frank shared and tried various combination such as \ipaddress\home\frank but just "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another." My entire data only drive is shared in Windows and no problems accessing that from other Win XP boxes on our network There are no alerts in Windows firewall, Ubuntu Firestarter did block but changed that to allowed... or so I thought. In firestarter I had set up Inbound traffic policy 192.168.1.1/24. And since then it has added the ip address of the win pc twice. So, I am in a state of confusion not knowing whedre to turn next so thought Ask Ubuntu :)

• Tidbits of goodness - Podcasts, REST, JSON

  I've been quiet for a while, busy with a variety of projects. I did want to let you all know about a couple of things going on. First, I have been participating in architectural podcasts with Bob Rhubart. If you are interested in hearing these short (about 10 minutes each) recordings where a group of us discuss enterprise architecture and its future, check out http://blogs.oracle.com/archbeat/2010/05/podcast_show_notes_evolving_en.html Next, I have been working on the public sample code for the Oracle Service Bus 11g release. I'm now expanding my samples to include SCA, BPEL and the Oracle Adapters. This is really great experience for me because I have been learning these other tools to a deeper level and this provides insight into developing better solutions. You know the old saying, "If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to appraoch every problem as if it were a nail." However, I'm not the only one working on these samples. We have alot of our best and brightest working on sample code for the 11g release. Take a look at https://soasamples.samplecode.oracle.com/ to see all of the samples for SOA Suite 11g A reader wrote to me and asked me about using OSB to return information in JSON format. I don't have a sample posted for this yet, but I am working on getting one packaged up. In the mean time I can tell you that it is dead simple to do in OSB. Use the instructions I gave in an earlier blog entry on creating REST services using OSB, specify Messaging Service as the service type that takes a Text message and returns a Text message. Then have the OSB proxy service return a JSON formatted string (by replacing the contents of the $body variable with the JSON text) and you're done! This approach allows you to use OSB services from within Javascript/AJAX seamlessly. As I get more samples posted to the OTN site, I'll let you know. I have lots of interesting stuff on the way.
