• OSX: Why does an uninstalled program ask for inbound connections on login? How do I fix this?

  I uninstalled an application using AppZapper called PdaNet. It is a tethering application for my phone. Now every time I login, I am asked if I would like to allow inboud connections from PdaNet by the firewall. A search for PdaNet with spotlight does not return any results. PdaNet creates its own Ethernet in network preferences. This hung around after uninstall. I deleted it but it did not make a difference. Any ideas? Mac OS X 10.6.4

• Why does running "$ sudo chmod -R 664 . " cause me to get access denied on all affected directories?

  I have a project folder which has messy permissions on all files. I've had the bad tendency of setting everything to octal permissions 777 because it solved all non security related issues. Then FTP uploads, files created by text editors etc. has their own set of permissions making everything a mess. I've decided to take myself together and start using the permissions the way they were meant to be used. I figured 664 was a good default for all my files and folders, and I'd just remove permissions for others on private files, and add +x for executable files. The second I changed my project folder to 664 however: $ sudo chmod -R 664 . $ ls ls: cannot open directory .: Permission denied Which makes no sense to me. I have read/write permissions, and I'm the owner of the project folder. • Flash drive suddenly died. Why? Can I recover it?

  Hi, I have a flash drive that I used not too much but, after few month of inactivity, it died. I know that flash drives have a limited write cycles but I am sure that this is not the problem. I tried to create a new partition table and format the drive nothing worked. • Traceroute to IP address fails, but traceroute to domain name with same IP address is okay. Why?

• Google is blocking our requests due to "automated queries"; what's the best way to find out why?

  This started a few weeks ago and we thought it was a virus so we checked every computer and all though 50%(Yeah, that's right) were infected once they were cleaned the problem didn't go away. It's really frustrating so I want to figure it out so I need suggestions on how to find the culprit. I think the router has logging but it logs everyone so it's hard to tell and I might be able to setup a proxy but again it's hard to tell when and what to monitor. What are your suggestions?

• Windows user account gets automatically locked

  One of the user accounts on a Windows 2003 server is frequently locked. Each time the "Account is locked" (roughly translated) checkbox is enabled in the Account Properties - Account tab. The event viewer only mentions that the account is locked, or that I've unlocked it. However, I don't see any message why the account gets locked in the first place. Are there know reasons why an account gets locked, or is there a way to find out why this happens?

• using gmail to send mails from your php?

  i've read some threads here in SO that someone managed to use gmail's smtp server to send out messages from php script. so if php sends a mail to [email protected] it looks like this: php tells sendmail (smtp server) to send the message sendmail sends the message to gmail's smtp server gmail's smtp server sends the message to hotmail's smtp server so now i wonder, why should one use gmail's smtp server to send a mail? isn't it better just to send the message from sendmail to hotmail's smtp server? correct me if im wrong, but isnt all that requires for a mail to be sent a communication between TWO smtp servers, the senders and the receivers (in this case, hotmail)? and another question, why can't php just send the message directly to hotmail's smtp server, why does it have to go through a local smtp server? and why do you call it a smtp server when sendmail is just acting like a client to send a message and does not receive anything? would be great if someone could shed a light on this topic!

• Why is there no /usr/bin/ in windows? Would it be dangerous to the entire Program Files to the path?

  I am a Linux user spending some time in Windows and I'm trying to understand some of the Windows paradigms instead of fighting them. I notice that each program installed in the traditional manner (i.e. via orgasmic installers: Yes, Yes, Yes, Finish) adds the executables to C:/Program Files/foo/bar.exe and then adds a shortcut to the Desktop / Start Menu containing the entire path. However, there is no common directory with links to the software, i.e. C:/bin/bar.exe which would link to C:/Program Files/foo/bar.exe. Therefore, after installing an application the only way to use the application is via the clicky-clicky menus or by navigating to the executable in the filesystem. One cannot simply Win-R to open the run dialogue and then type bar or bar.exe as is possible with notepad or mspaint. I realize that Windows 8 improves on this with the otherwise horrendous Start Screen which does support typing the name of the app, but again this depends on the app having registered itself for such. Would I be doing any harm by adding C:/Program Files recursively to the Windows path? I do realize that there will be name collisions (i.e. uninstall.exe) but could there be other issues?

• When using RAID10 + BBWC why is it better to separate PostgreSQL data files from OS and transaction logs than to keep them all on the same array?

  I've seen the advice everywhere (including here and here): keep your OS partition, DB data files and DB transaction logs on separate discs/arrays. The general recommendation is to use RAID1 for OS, RAID10 for data (or RAID5 if load is very read-biased) and RAID1 for transaction logs. However, considering that you will need at least 6 or 8 drives to build this setup, wouldn't a RAID10 over 6-8 drives with BBWC perform better? What if the drives are SSDs? I'm talking here about internal server drives, not SAN.

• What is the name of the this DOS font? Where and how to add it? Why is there a 1 pixel gap?

  So basically I somehow stepped into this webpage: www.braindamage.vg And the first thing that hit me hard was the lovely DOS fonts, so naturally I wanted to get them into my IDE badly. Opened the html source file and CSS file to find the font name: @font-face { font-family: 'Perfect DOS VGA 437'; src: url('http://www.braindamage.vg/wp-content/themes/braindamage/dosfont.eot'); } @font-face { font-family: 'Perfect DOS VGA 437'; src: url('http://www.braindamage.vg/wp-content/themes/braindamage/dosfont.svg#dos') format("svg"), url('http://www.braindamage.vg/wp-content/themes/braindamage/dosfont.ttf') format ('truetype'); } So I download the font, add it using Control Panel - Fonts. But once I start using it (notepad, MSVS 2008 & MSVS2010) I notice that it looks slightly off: It seems like there's 1 extra pixel between each character. How it should look: What is causing it and how to fix this? Is it the windows XP? (i have disabled font smoothing) Or is there something wrong with the font file?

• What is the "real" difference between a NAS and NFS? Or, why pick a NAS device over "mere" NFS?

  From an end-user perspective, what is the difference between a NAS device and using NFS exports from a file server? They seem to accomplish the same end result. The difference between a SAN and other file storage is related (in my experience) to how they are connected to the server infrastructure. However, the difference between a NAS, connecting over a standard ethernet port, and NFS (sharing storage off specific servers, also over the network), seems more nebulous. Is there a good reason to pick a NAS filer over just running NFS on servers?

• Adding user groups from a remote domain server to permissions of a remote desktop terminal server fails. why?

  I have 3 computers, two of which are servers running Windows Server 2008 and another running Windows 7. One of the servers has the following roles installed; Active Directory, DHCP and DNS. The other server has a Terminal Server role installed. I am trying to log-on to the Terminal Server via Remote Desktop using the Windows 7 machine with credentials from the Active Directory server. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, no. Whenever I try to add users or groups from the Active Directory Domain server to the Terminal Server's permissions for RDP it seems to ignore, or forget, them. Though the various methods I was able to find it either adds a strange sting of numbers after the user group or the logo to the left has a question mark on it, reopening the dialogue box replaces the user group with the name of the Domain. I am confident I have the Domain setup correctly as I am able to log-on to users in the Active Directory from other computers I have put in the Domain, and when I attempt to browse the user objects from the Domain I am prompted with a username/password field and am able to view the structure of Active Directory objects. Please advise.

• PHP's page generation time takes 0.01s. 1/0.01 = 100; however i'm having problems reaching that number of request per seconds. Why?

  On average, my PHP page generation time is 10ms. So i should be able to execute 100 requests one after the other one (using a single core on the server, since that php is not multithreaded). However, i'm having problems reaching 50 pages per seconds. As of now i do 25 on avg., with a medium load. The application is really light, it consist in a read (<5KB) from a pool of SSDs, some read queries solved by indexes. Where should i look to solve this bottleneck?

The actual searches return results that look valid, but whenever I click on a link, I'm redirected to strange sites. I believe I'm being affected by a virus that has something to do with the string "otnggrneohai." I was running Windows 7 Home with Microsoft Security Essentials, but Microsoft Security Essentials has been deleted. I did not delete it myself.   Let's take a break from technology for a second; please indulge me. (That's for you Erick.) A few months back, James Hoffmann reported that Gwilym Davies, the 2009 World Barista Champion, had implemented a rather unique idea for his cafe: the disloyalty card. His card lists eight nearby cafes in London that the cardholder must visit and try a coffee. After sampling all eight and collecting the required stamps, Gwilym provides a free coffee from his shop. His idea sends customers to his competitors. What does this say about Gwilym? First, it tells me he's confident in his abilities to make a mean cup of java. Second, it tells me he's truly passionate about his his trade. But was this a sound business endeavor? Obviously the risk is that one of his loyal customers might just find a better product at a competitor and not return. But the goal isn't really to strengthen his customer base -- its to strengthen the market, which will in turn provide more customers over the long run. This idea seems great for frequently purchased products like restaurants, bars, bakeries, music, and of course, cafes. Its probably not a good idea for high priced merchandise or infrequently purchased items like shoes, electronics, and housewares. Nevertheless, its a great example of thinking in reverse. Try this: Instead of telling your staff how you want customers treated, list out the ways you don't want customers treated. Why should you limit people's imagination and freedom to engage customers? Instead, give them guidelines to avoid the bad behavior, and leave them open to be creative with the positive behavior. Instead of asking the question, "how can we get more people in our stores?" try asking the inverse: "why aren't people visiting our stores?" Innovation doesn't only come from asking "why?" Often it comes from asking "why not?"

  Hi everyone, If a (new-coming) developer that learns latest technologies as well as can develop amazing stuff with those technologies and did Bachelors in Arts (BA). So what ’ll be the future of this kind of developer? I meant did he can get good job without degree? I think (but it is the universal truth that) no one (org or company) permit these kind of developers to join them because degree is must for job!! I’m worried about why the world depends upon degree? Why degree is necessary for good job? If a developer has a good experience, why he cannot be able to get good job without degree? What is the future of developer that starts his life as a freelancer and learns everything himself with the help of online available resources? Why companies prerequisite the degree for a good job? A developer without degree can be expert than that who have a degree of MSC etc. Because in 3rd world countries especially Pakistan, a BSC level student taught VB6 and the MSC level student learns C/C++. The common student doesn’t know about latest innovative technologies and he think that the world is depending upon VB6 or C/C++. What is the comparison of that students with a developer that do Bachelors in Arts but know (and can do well with) latest technologies.

  Today, I have one very simple question based on following image. A full disclaimer is that I have no idea why it is like that. I tried to reach out to few of my friends who know a lot about SQL Server but no one has any answer. Here is the question: If you go to server properties and click on Advanced you will see the following screen. Under the Parallelism section if you noticed there are four options: Cost Threshold for Parallelism Locks Max Degree of Parallelism Query Wait I can clearly understand why Cost Threshold for Parallelism and Max Degree of Parallelism belongs to Parallelism but I am not sure why we have two other options Locks and Query Wait belongs to Parallelism section. I can see that the options are ordered alphabetically but I do not understand the reason for locks and query wait to list under Parallelism. Here is the question for you – Why Locks and Query Wait options are listed under Parallelism section in SQL Server Advanced Properties? Please leave a comment with your explanation.   Well I'm reading the Frank's Luna DirectX10 book and, while I'm trying to understand the first demo, I found something that's not very clear at least for me. In the updateScene method, when I press A, S, W or D, the angles mTheta and mPhi change, but after that, there are three lines of code that I don't understand exactly what they do: // Convert Spherical to Cartesian coordinates: mPhi measured from +y // and mTheta measured counterclockwise from -z. float x = 5.0f*sinf(mPhi)*sinf(mTheta); float z = -5.0f*sinf(mPhi)*cosf(mTheta); float y = 5.0f*cosf(mPhi); I mean, this explains that they do, it says that it converts the spherical coordinates to cartesian coordinates, but, mathematically, why? why the x value is calculated by the product of the sins of both angles? And the z by the product of the sine and cosine? and why the y just uses the cosine? After that, those values (x, y and z) are used to build the view matrix. The book doesn't explain (mathematically) why those values are calculated like that (and I didn't find anything to help me to understand it at the first Part of the book: "Mathematical prerequisites"), so it would be good if someone could explain me what exactly happen in those code lines or just give me a link that helps me to understand the math part. • Should I think about switching to another platform as a .Net developer? [closed]

  I’ve been a developer for about 10 years and I’ve almost worked on Microsoft stack. At the last several years I’ve been introduced to some good practices such as IoC and other primary design patterns. Now I feel so much comfortable using these patterns and concepts and I’m very angry why we didn’t do that earlier! They exist and used by many developers since more than 5 years ago but why I and many of my colleagues began using them a little later. As you may know Java developers are more ahead in these fields (concepts, patterns and …) than .Net developers. Am I right? Now the question is, “Why we (as .NET developers) weren’t ahead so much? Isn’t it because we are using Microsoft stack?”. I know ALT.NET but why we are trying make a closed ecosystem open and finding alternatives for Microsoft Echo Chamber, while there are natively open ecosystems like Java!? I've always liked most of the Microsoft works very much but I’m worried about this issue. I am even ask myself should I move to another platform?
