• Storage disk format to use to be utilised by all OS

  Aiming to have a large internal HDD to store files, and several OSes on separate disks. They all need to read and write to one storage drive. Ubuntu (13.04+) Mac OSX (10.8+) Windows (7+) What format should the drive be? Would like to avoid buying third party software, here's what I have discerned so far: NTFS - Can't be written to by Mac without buying third party software? ext3 - Windows can't read, third party software in development. Mac has OSXFUSE HFS+ - Buy third party and/or faff around to get working on windows exFAT - Cross platform, but breaks MS patents?

  Briefly I can't get work "Play on another device" function More detailed My Samsung TV (which support network) and PC are in the same network. The problem is, I can play PC contents from TV. But when I try to control TV remotely from Allshare software (PC), it shows TV only as connected device: But not as remote player in "players" list The result Tried to turn off firewall completely, reset router, re-install software. • problem getting scanning to work on epson workforce 610

  i installed the latest epson software on my user's computer. everything works fine from the admin account (printing / scanning). yet, when i go to user's account (the standard user mode account the company employee uses on there machine) and launch the epson scan software or scan settings software it times out and puts up a dialog box asking me if i want to use the trouble assistant. my question is why would this all work in the admin account yet not work in the user mode account? any help is greatly appreciated.

• "Viral" license that only blocks legal actions of user and developer against each other

  I was thinking a lot about software licensing lately, because I would like to do some coding. I'm not an expert in all those licenses, so I came up with my own idea, and before I will put in on paper, I would like to make sure that I didn't reinvent a wheel, so maybe I would be able to use something that exists. Main idea behind my license is to guarantee freedom of use the software, but not "freedom to" (positive) (e.g. freedom to having source code), but "freedom from" (negative) (strictly from legal actions against you). It would be "viral" copyleft license. You would be able to without fear do everything you want with the software (and binaries e.g. reverse engineering), as long as You will include information about author and/or authors, and all derivative works will be distributed with the same license. I'm not interested in anything that would restrict a freedom of company to do something like "tivoization". I'm just trying to accomplish something that would block any legal actions of user and developer, targeted against each other, with the exception of basic attribution. Does exist something like that?

• Methodology To Determine Cause Of User Specific Error

  We have software that for certain clients fails to download a file. The software is developed in Python and compiled into an Windows Executable. The cause of the error is still unknown but we have established that the client has an active internet connection. We suspect that the cause is due to the clients network setup. This error cannot be replicated in house. What technique or methodology should be applied to this kind of specific error that cannot be replicated in house. The end goal is to determine the cause of this error so we can move onto the solution. For example; Remote Debugging: Produce a debug version of the software and ask the client to send back a debug output file. This involves alot of time (back and forth communication) and requires the client to work and act in a timely manor to be successful. In-house debugging: Visit the client and determine their network setup, etc. Possibly develop a series of script tests before hand to run on the clients computer under the same network. Other methodologies and techniques I am not aware of?

  I'm looking for software to create street map images that show the route from address 1 to address 2. It needs to be able to create the map images from either a database file that contains the addresses, a delimited text file that lists the addresses to route in each row, or an Excel file. I need to do this to create custom maps in bulk- 500 to 20,000 quantity from the data file. The purpose is to provide a map with a route from a location (address 1) to a retail store (address 2). The maps will be printed on a postcard. I have the data. I just need the mapping software. Is there software available that can do this?

• How to integrate a PHP CMS with paypal so that only users who completed a payment can register and authenticate?

  I am currently using a PHP CMS - cmsmadesimple - in order to create a website where services will be sold. I intend to use Paypal 'Buy Now' buttons in order to offer a few packages that will be renewable every 1-month or every 3-months and that grant access to the secure content of the website for a given period of time. Everything is going well so far but I am somewhat at loss for the user registration process as I have a few constraints I would like to use and it would be nice to automate the process if possible. Here are the constraints : User should be able to register to my website and choose a password himself Only users that paid should be able to register Access permissions should be disabled automatically after the service period if the package is not renewed And here is the process which I am thinking of : User clicks 'buy' on my website User is redirected on Paypal and completes the payment The paypal email used to pay should be returned to my server and somehow stored If it is a new email, user needs to register to my website (else if it is a returning customer, the deactivation flag for payment stopped should be removed to give back access) If a user does not renew his subscription, there should be a deactivation flag automatically set to the email used in order to lock access until next payment. Ideally, no human intervention is needed. What is the best way to implement all this? I am a bit at loss.   So I have solved this issue, but now I have another problem: An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by: * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. I am not upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu and I am not running a pre-release either. I have unchecked all my 3rd-party packages using Ubuntu Software Manager, EditSoftware Sources... What else might be wrong?   I was discussing a interesting design problem with a colleague of mine Niall (his blog) on the topic of how to cancel an inflight SOA Composite process.  Obviously one way to do this is to cancel the process from enterprise Manager ( http://hostort/em ) , however we were thinking this isnt a “user friendly” way of doing this.. If you look at Nialls blog you’ll see he’s highlighted a number of different APIs which enable you the ability to manipulate the SCA instance, e.g. Code Snippet to purge (delete) an instance How to determine the instanceId from a composite_sensor_value using the “composite_sensor_value” table How to determine a BPEL Process status using the cube_instance table   Now all of these require that you know the instanceId of your SOA Composite, how does one find this out? Well the easiest way of doing this is to create a composite sensor on the SCA component. A composite sensor is simply a way of publishing a piece of business data as part of your composite. The magic here is that you can later query composites based on this value. So a good best practice is that for any composites you create consider publishing a composite sensor value using a primary key of some sort , e.g. orderId, that way if you need to manipulate/query composites you can easily look up the instanceId using the sensorid.   For information on how to create a composite Sensor id see this documentation link

  I'm looking for a simple method that will log file system operations. It should display the name of the file being accessed or modified. I'm familiar with powertop, and it appears this works to an extent, in so much that it show the user files that were written to. Is there any other utilities that support this feature. Some of my findings: powertop: best for write access logging, but more focused on CPU activity iotop: shows real time disk access by process, but not file name lsof: shows the open files per process, but not real time file access iostat: shows the real time I/O performance of disk/arrays but does not indicate file or process

• How can Agile methodologies be adapted to High Volume processing system development?

  I am developing high volume processing systems. Like mathematical models that calculate various parameters based on millions of records, calculated derived fields over milions of records, process huge files having transactions etc... I am well aware of unit testing methodologies and if my code is in C# I have no problem in unit testing it. Problem is I often have code in T-SQL, C# code that is a SQL stored assembly, and SSIS workflow with a good amount of logic (and outcomes etc) or some SAS process. What is the approach YOu use when developing such systems. I usually develop several tests as Stored procedures in a designed schema(TEST) and then automatically run them overnight and check out the results. But this is only for T-SQL. And Continous integration IS hard. But the problem is with testing SSIS packages. How do You test it? What is Your preferred approach for stubbing data into tables (especially if You need a lot data initialization). I have some approach derived over the years but maybe I am just not reading enough articles. So Banking, Telecom, Risk developers out there. How do You test your mission critical apps that process milions of records at end day, month end etc? What frameworks do You use? How do You validate that Your ssis package is Correct (as You develop it)/ How do You achieve continous integration in such an environment (Personally I never got there)? I hope this is not to open-ended question. How do You test Your map-reduce jobs for example (i do not use hadoop but this is quite similar). luke Hope that this is not too open ended

If this is true, and I believe that it is, then I fear that governments and businesses may defer regular maintenance and fortification against hackers until it is too late. • Text tagging/analysis tool for Mac

  I'm a doctoral student doing research in the humanities. As part of my research I have gathered together a lot of interview text. To analyse this data I want to be able to easily tag sections of text with keywords (the tags need to be able to overlap, and perhaps be organised hierarchically) and later be able to collate those sections from across multiple files. I need to be able to do this on a Mac. It feels like a simple task but I can't find any software for doing it that isn't either horribly clunky or a massive overkill worth hundreds of pounds. Is there any good software for doing this, or are there any good ways of doing it with other software?

• Need ideas for an innovation week

  So 4 times a year we have an innovation week (to even out the odd sprint releases). This whole week is dedicated to experimenting with new technology/ideas that could potentially help progress the software department or the company as a whole, and serve as sort of a starting point for new ideas and brainstorming. For example, the last one contained a lot of projects. One was the re-design of our web app into more of a Web 2.0 look and feel using JQuery and a lot of cool CSS tricks. Another was a proposal for a new bug tracking software as opposed to the clearly outdated one we use, and another was a very cool JQuery/Js design that could show the same page to multiple users on different computers and allow each of them to take "charge" of the page, disabling the other one from doing anything, and vice versa, seeing all updates in real time -- sort of like Netmeeting through Js. Well, this is my first one as a new employee so I wanted to think of something cool. We get one week (anywhere from 40-60 hours or so), and we usually pair up or do this in groups of 3-4, depending on how many projects there are. Projects have to get approved but usually that doesn't prove to be too difficult. We are in the financial analysis software industry if the domain was leading you guys to think of anything helpful. I am primarily working on a web app in MVC 2 at the moment using a lot of JQuery and a C# backend. Do you guys have any idea of something that would be cool/beneficial/worth it?

• How to set IP address of Amazon EC2 instance to its Elastic IP?

  Hi, I have an Amazon EC2 instance running and I am installing a program on it that needs to know what the machine's IP address is. Can I set the Elastic IP address to the IP address within the EC2 instance? Its okay if it reroutes data packets somewhere 'outside' and then back to itself, but the software NEEDs me to specify an IP address of the machine its on. I proceeded with the software installation using the "local IP" (10.xx.xx.xx) within the software installation. I don't know if this is the reason why the application is not visible publicly (as I'm trying to determine in the question http://serverfault.com/questions/166946/allowing-web-access-to-an-amazon-ec2-windows-server-2008-instance-running-tomcat)

• Can I use the voice & SMS features of my GSM SIM through my laptop?

  My laptop (a Lenovo T410s) has an internal GSM modem (device manager calls it a Qualcomm Gobi 2000 HS-USB Modem 9205) that I'm currently using a regular (voice, data, text, etc) 3G SIM in. The data functionality works great through the Lenovo software & Windows 7 but I was wondering if I can use the other features (specifically voice & SMS) through Windows. Is it posisble to use the non-data features of my 3G SIM through my Qualcomm GSM modem? If so, what software is available to this end? If not, where is the restriction? In addition to making sure the code changes are complete, you also need to make sure the other key parts of a release are ready. For example when you have a question about the software, will the person on the other end of the phone be ready to answer your question? If you need training on that cool new piece of functionality, will there be an online training course ready for you to review? If you want to read about how the software is supposed to function, is there a user manual available? Putting all the release pieces together so they are available at the same time is what the JD Edwards Program Management team does. It is my team’s job to work with all the different functional teams so when a release is made generally available you have all the things you need to be successful. The JD Edwards Program Management team uses an internal planning tool called the Release Process Model (RPM) to ensure all deliverables are accounted for in a release. The RPM makes sure all the release deliverables are ready at the correct time and in the correct format. The RPM really helps all the functional teams in JD Edwards know what release deliverables they are accountable for and when they are to be delivered. It is my team’s job to make sure everyone understands what they need to do and when they need to deliver. We then make sure they are all on track to deliver on-time and in the right format. It is just that some days this feels like herding cats.

This channel has various subjects such as before start a new ADF or any software project what will you need or how can you select team member's skills, or how to implement and design an ADF projects etc. When developing with a new technology, one of the challenges for technical staff is to both learn the features of the technology and how to implement them, and also consider the broader concepts of design, engineering and architecture.
