• Software Requirement Specifications for Web Applications

  Hi guys, I'm looking for some guidance/books to read when it comes to creating a software requirement specification for a web application. For inspiration I have read some spec documents for desktop based applications. The documents I have read capture a systems functional requirements in use cases which tend to be rather data oriented with use cases centered around the various CRUD operations the application is intended to perform. I like this structure however I'm finding it rather difficult to marry it to what my web application needs to do, mostly reading data as opposed to manipulating it. I've had a go at writing some use cases however they all tend to boil down to "Search for item", "Change view of search results" or "User selects facet to refine search results". This doesn't sound quite right to me and makes me wonder if I'm going about this the right way. Are there planning differences between web based and desktop based applications?

• Mysql adapter for Zend_Translate

  Hi everybody, I'm currently in the planning phase of a rather large project that I'll develop in the Zend Framework. One of the problems I'm facing is that the customers will want to translate not only the content but also the interface. I'm currently using gettext and poedit to manage my language files but this is not an option for the customer as they, for one, want have FTP access to the site. Hence, I'm thinking of a mysql back end with an interface in the front end for the customer to manage his own translations of the interface. There is however still no mysql adapater for Zend_Translate. So, does anybody now of an adapter script for Zend_Translate so it can work with a mysql table? Or any arguments against using mysql and possible other solutions for this problem?

  Let say that I want to populate a list of CustomerViewModel which are built based on Customer Entity Framework model with some fields (like Balance) calculated separately. Below I have code which works for lists - it is implemented in my service layer, but also I want to execute this code when I just get one item from the database and execute is as well in different services where I'm accessing Customers data as well.   I am using a library (DLL) that uses the Oracle.DataAccess DLL to connect to the database. I am doing in in C# .NET framework 3.5 When I attempt to compile, the compilation takes place, but the executable throws this error message. Could not load file or assembly 'Oracle.DataAccess, Version=2.111.7.20, Culture= neutral, PublicKeyToken=89b483f429c47342' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. Is there some way to get around this? What could be causing this to happen?

• What 'best practices' exist for handing enum heirarchies?

  I'm curious as to any solutions out there for addressing enum heirarchies. I'm working through some docs on Entity Framework 4 and trying to apply it to a simple inventory tracking program. The possible types for inventory to fall into are as follows: INVENTORY ITEM TYPES: Hardware PC Desktop Server Laptop Accessory Input (keyboards, scanners etc) Output (monitors, printers etc) Storage (USB sticks, tape drives etc) Communication (network cards, routers etc) Software What recommendations are there for handling enums in a situation like this? Are enums even the solution? I don't really want to have a ridiculously normalised database for such a relatively simple experiment (eg tables for InventoryType, InventorySubtype, InventoryTypeToSubtype etc). I don't really want to over-complicate my data model with each subtype being inherited even though no additional properties or methods are included (except PC types which would ideally have associated accessories and software but that's probably out of scope here). It feels like there should be a really simple, elegant solution to this but I can't put my finger on it. Any assistance or input appreciated!

  I am getting started with the ADO.NET Entity Framework 4.0. I have created an EDM and data store for the app, and it successfully retrieves entities. The application holds the EDM's ObjectContext as a member-level variable, which it uses to call ObjectContext.SaveChanges(). So far, so good. I am going to refactor to repositories later. Right now, my question is a bit more basic: When I am finished with the EDM, what do I need to do to release it? Is it as simple as calling Dispose() on the ObjectContext? Thanks for your help.

  I need to test an issue with running our application behind a proxy server with different type of configurations, so I installed ISA 2006 Enterprise on a desktop computer. Since this computer only has a single network card and I want to start out easy, I chose the "Single Network Adapter" template. We have a internal NAT'ed network which is in the 10 range. Great. But while doing some research for speeding up my database access, I ran into this blog post... Improving Entity Framework Performance The post argues that EFs poor performance compared to other frameworks is often due to the EntityConnection object being created each time a new EntityContext object is needed. To test this I manually created a static EntityConnection in Global.asax.cs Application_Start(). I then converted all my context using statements to using( MyObjContext currContext = new MyObjeContext(globalStaticEFConnection) { .... } This seems to have sped things up a bit without any errors so far as far as I can tell. But is this safe? Does using a applicationwide static EntityConnection introduce race conditions? Best regards, Kervin

  I have migrated a Web Application from MyEclipse to Eclipse WTP, and I am now in the middle of the first major upgrade to the code base and web pages after the migration, and it is frankly driving me mad that saving a JSP page causes a redeployment of the WHOLE application, as it takes time and that my backend connection does not survive the serialization-deserialization of the session object (which is non-trivial to fix). In addition to that the JSP-editor is insanely slow so I frequently have to pause to let the editor catch up to be certain where my edits go in a small JSP using JavaServer Faces. Disabling validation did not help. The Eclipse Dynamic Web Project depends on several library eclipse projects so I cannot just tell e.g. Jetty to use the WebRoot folder, as several dependencies are then missing from the classpath. The question is: Is there a way of working - ANY way of working - with the Eclipse WTP system that does NOT imply redeploying everything every time any file is saved? I can use Tomcat 5.5 or Jetty 6 as servers.

Try specifying the type arguments explicitly' The delegate supplied to Where should take in an XElement and return a bool, marking if the item matches the query, I am not sure how to add anything more to the delegate or the where clause to mark the type. Also, the parallel method for the real function against the Entity Framework does not have this issue. What is not correct with the LINQ-to-XML version?

I'm trying to use the Text Layout Framework to improve the speed of the operation but i've founded that TLF is far slower (10X in my tests) than the old setTextFormat().   Hi, i've seen many article on encrypt/decrypt of file and typically a button is used to choose the file for encrypt and another button to decrypt the file. i've seen some application like truecrypt and probably others which does file encryption on-the-fly with transparent. this means that when a encrypted file is clicked to access, it will automatically decrypt and play/open the file. then when the file is closed, it will automatically encrypt again. some have said that the only way to detect file open is through file system filter. but is there other ways to do this in c# compact framework?

  Hi, I've got a console app written that persists an object graph via Entity Framework 4.0. I loop through this to dump the execution times for each persistance. The first persistance is always the largest. Is this due to EF making the initial connection to the database and/or JIT'ing ? Here's a sample of the output: Persisted graph in **3318** millseconds. I also have read something about MapReduce and Column oriented tables, big tables, hypertable etc... trying to understand which are the most up to date methods to scale web application data. But the second group, to me, is being hard to understand where it fits. It serves as transactional, reliable data store? or not, its just for large access and processing and to handle fine graned operations we will ever need to rely on RDBMSs? • How should I move my code from dev to production?

  I have created a PHP web-application. I have 3 environments: DEV, TEST, PROD. What's a good tool / business practice for me to move my PHP web-application code from DEV to TEST to the PROD environment? Realizing that my TEST environment still only connects to my TEST database; whereas, I need to PROD environment to connect to my PROD database. So the code is mostly the same, except that I need to change my TEST code once moved into PROD to connect to the PROD database and not TEST database. I've heard of people taking down Apache in such away that it doesn't allow new connections and once all the existing connections are idle it simply brings down the web server. Then people manually copy the code and then manually update the config files of the PHP application to also point to the PROD instance. That seems terribly dangerous. Does a best practice exists?

  I've developed a web application. It needs to be translated to languages other than English in the future, and ideally the translators shouldn't need to know HTML/JS/C++ to provide the translation. The server side of the web application is written in C++ and the majority of the localised text is in the HTML files. My question is: What approaches are there to translating web applications? - Are there any existing tools that would enable a translator who doesn't understand HTML to translate a site? Should I write an application that extracts the localised text from a html file and can re-substitute translated text? Do you just provide the html file to your translators to be localised? I'm aware the question isn't strictly programming related but the solution may involve programming and it may require some software engineering.

  Anyone know of any Flash components that would do the job of displaying an external PPT/PPTX file in a Flash movie on a web page? Or a way of automatically parsing uploaded Powerpoint docs from a PHP-based CMS and displaying them on a web page. Our client needs to be able to upload a Powerpoint documents on their site without any intervention (if necessary). I know about Slideshare and the like, but the content needs to live on the client's web server due to security restrictions. I don't mean any components that are already a part of ZF. Please give a description of aditional frameworks you have integrated (like RuckUsing, Smarty, or Doctrine). It also applies to any GUI frameworks (perhaps you use a CSS framework), as well as JS frameworks (not just jQuery or prototype, but rather some advanced structures). The main requirement: it has to be a ZendFramework project. Additional bonus will be given to answers that describe performance optimization.
