  • When adding WCF service reference, configuration details are not added to web.config

    - by Mikey Cee
    Hi, I am trying to add a WCF service reference to my web application using VS2010. It seems to add OK, but the web.config is not updated, meaning I get a runtime exception: Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'CoolService.CoolService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element. Obviously, because the service is not defined in my web.config. Steps to reproduce: Right click solution Add New Project ASP.NET Empty Web Application. Right click Service References in the new web app Add Service Reference. Enter address of my service and click Go. My service is visible in the left-hand Services section, and I can see all its operations. Type a namespace for my service. Click OK. The service reference is generated correctly, and I can open the Reference.cs file, and it all looks OK. Open the web.config file. It is still empty! <system.web> <compilation debug="true" targetFramework="4.0" /> </system.web> <system.serviceModel> <bindings /> <client /> </system.serviceModel> Why is this happening? It also happens with a console application, or any other project type I try. Any help? Here is the app.config from my WCF service: <?xml version="1.0"?> <configuration> <system.web> <compilation debug="true" /> </system.web> <!-- When deploying the service library project, the content of the config file must be added to the host's app.config file. System.Configuration does not support config files for libraries. --> <system.serviceModel> <services> <service name="CoolSQL.Server.WCF.CoolService"> <endpoint address="" binding="webHttpBinding" contract="CoolSQL.Server.WCF.CoolService" behaviorConfiguration="SilverlightFaultBehavior"> <identity> <dns value="localhost" /> </identity> </endpoint> <endpoint address="mex" binding="mexHttpBinding" contract="IMetadataExchange" /> <host> <baseAddresses> <add baseAddress="http://localhost:8732/Design_Time_Addresses/CoolSQL.Server.WCF/CoolService/" /> </baseAddresses> </host> </service> </services> <behaviors> <endpointBehaviors> <behavior name="webBehavior"> <webHttp /> </behavior> <behavior name="SilverlightFaultBehavior"> <silverlightFaults /> </behavior> </endpointBehaviors> <serviceBehaviors> <behavior name=""> <serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="true" /> <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="true" /> </behavior> </serviceBehaviors> </behaviors> <bindings> <webHttpBinding> <binding name="DefaultBinding" bypassProxyOnLocal="true" useDefaultWebProxy="false" hostNameComparisonMode="WeakWildcard" sendTimeout="00:05:00" openTimeout="00:05:00" receiveTimeout="00:00:10" maxReceivedMessageSize="2147483647" transferMode="Streamed"> <readerQuotas maxArrayLength="2147483647" maxStringContentLength="2147483647" /> </binding> </webHttpBinding> </bindings> <extensions> <behaviorExtensions> <add name="silverlightFaults" type="CoolSQL.Server.WCF.SilverlightFaultBehavior, CoolSQL.Server.WCF" /> </behaviorExtensions> </extensions> <diagnostics> <messageLogging logEntireMessage="true" logMalformedMessages="false" logMessagesAtServiceLevel="true" logMessagesAtTransportLevel="false" maxMessagesToLog="3000" maxSizeOfMessageToLog="2000" /> </diagnostics> </system.serviceModel> <startup> <supportedRuntime version="v4.0" sku=".NETFramework,Version=v4.0" /> </startup> <system.diagnostics> <sources> <source name="System.ServiceModel.MessageLogging" switchValue="Information, ActivityTracing"> <listeners> <add name="messages" type="System.Diagnostics.XmlWriterTraceListener" initializeData="c:\messages.e2e" /> </listeners> </source> </sources> </system.diagnostics> </configuration>

  • w3schools xsd example won't work with dom4j. How do I use dom4j to validate xml using xsds?

    - by HappyEngineer
    I am trying to use dom4j to validate the xml at http://www.w3schools.com/Schema/schema_example.asp using the xsd from that same page. It fails with the following error: org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: cvc-elt.1: Cannot find the declaration of element 'shiporder'. I'm using the following code: SAXReader reader = new SAXReader(); reader.setValidation(true); reader.setFeature("http://apache.org/xml/features/validation/schema", true); reader.setErrorHandler(new XmlErrorHandler()); reader.read(in); where in is an InputStream and XmlErrorHandler is a simple class that just logs all errors. I'm using the following xml file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <shiporder orderid="889923" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="test1.xsd"> <orderperson>John Smith</orderperson> <shipto> <name>Ola Nordmann</name> <address>Langgt 23</address> <city>4000 Stavanger</city> <country>Norway</country> </shipto> <item> <title>Empire Burlesque</title> <note>Special Edition</note> <quantity>1</quantity> <price>10.90</price> </item> <item> <title>Hide your heart</title> <quantity>1</quantity> <price>9.90</price> </item> </shiporder> and the corresponding xsd: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?> <xs:schema xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <xs:simpleType name="stringtype"> <xs:restriction base="xs:string"/> </xs:simpleType> <xs:simpleType name="inttype"> <xs:restriction base="xs:positiveInteger"/> </xs:simpleType> <xs:simpleType name="dectype"> <xs:restriction base="xs:decimal"/> </xs:simpleType> <xs:simpleType name="orderidtype"> <xs:restriction base="xs:string"> <xs:pattern value="[0-9]{6}"/> </xs:restriction> </xs:simpleType> <xs:complexType name="shiptotype"> <xs:sequence> <xs:element name="name" type="stringtype"/> <xs:element name="address" type="stringtype"/> <xs:element name="city" type="stringtype"/> <xs:element name="country" type="stringtype"/> </xs:sequence> </xs:complexType> <xs:complexType name="itemtype"> <xs:sequence> <xs:element name="title" type="stringtype"/> <xs:element name="note" type="stringtype" minOccurs="0"/> <xs:element name="quantity" type="inttype"/> <xs:element name="price" type="dectype"/> </xs:sequence> </xs:complexType> <xs:complexType name="shipordertype"> <xs:sequence> <xs:element name="orderperson" type="stringtype"/> <xs:element name="shipto" type="shiptotype"/> <xs:element name="item" maxOccurs="unbounded" type="itemtype"/> </xs:sequence> <xs:attribute name="orderid" type="orderidtype" use="required"/> </xs:complexType> <xs:element name="shiporder" type="shipordertype"/> </xs:schema> The xsd and xml file are in the same directory. What is the problem?

  • The Inkremental Architect&acute;s Napkin - #4 - Make increments tangible

    - by Ralf Westphal
    Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/theArchitectsNapkin/archive/2014/06/12/the-inkremental-architectacutes-napkin---4---make-increments-tangible.aspxThe driver of software development are increments, small increments, tiny increments. With an increment being a slice of the overall requirement scope thin enough to implement and get feedback from a product owner within 2 days max. Such an increment might concern Functionality or Quality.[1] To make such high frequency delivery of increments possible, the transition from talking to coding needs to be as easy as possible. A user story or some other documentation of what´s supposed to get implemented until tomorrow evening at latest is one side of the medal. The other is where to put the logic in all of the code base. To implement an increment, only logic statements are needed. Functionality like Quality are just about expressions and control flow statements. Think of Assembler code without the CALL/RET instructions. That´s all is needed. Forget about functions, forget about classes. To make a user happy none of that is really needed. It´s just about the right expressions and conditional executions paths plus some memory allocation. Automatic function inlining of compilers which makes it clear how unimportant functions are for delivering value to users at runtime. But why then are there functions? Because they were invented for optimization purposes. We need them for better Evolvability and Production Efficiency. Nothing more, nothing less. No software has become faster, more secure, more scalable, more functional because we gathered logic under the roof of a function or two or a thousand. Functions make logic easier to understand. Functions make us faster in producing logic. Functions make it easier to keep logic consistent. Functions help to conserve memory. That said, functions are important. They are even the pivotal element of software development. We can´t code without them - whether you write a function yourself or not. Because there´s always at least one function in play: the Entry Point of a program. In Ruby the simplest program looks like this:puts "Hello, world!" In C# more is necessary:class Program { public static void Main () { System.Console.Write("Hello, world!"); } } C# makes the Entry Point function explicit, not so Ruby. But still it´s there. So you can think of logic always running in some function. Which brings me back to increments: In order to make the transition from talking to code as easy as possible, it has to be crystal clear into which function you should put the logic. Product owners might be content once there is a sticky note a user story on the Scrum or Kanban board. But developers need an idea of what that sticky note means in term of functions. Because with a function in hand, with a signature to run tests against, they have something to focus on. All´s well once there is a function behind whose signature logic can be piled up. Then testing frameworks can be used to check if the logic is correct. Then practices like TDD can help to drive the implementation. That´s why most code katas define exactly how the API of a solution should look like. It´s a function, maybe two or three, not more. A requirement like “Write a function f which takes this as parameters and produces such and such output by doing x” makes a developer comfortable. Yes, there are all kinds of details to think about, like which algorithm or technology to use, or what kind of state and side effects to consider. Even a single function not only must deliver on Functionality, but also on Quality and Evolvability. Nevertheless, once it´s clear which function to put logic in, you have a tangible starting point. So, yes, what I´m suggesting is to find a single function to put all the logic in that´s necessary to deliver on a the requirements of an increment. Or to put it the other way around: Slice requirements in a way that each increment´s logic can be located under the roof of a single function. Entry points Of course, the logic of a software will always be spread across many, many functions. But there´s always an Entry Point. That´s the most important function for each increment, because that´s the root to put integration or even acceptance tests on. A batch program like the above hello-world application only has a single Entry Point. All logic is reached from there, regardless how deep it´s nested in classes. But a program with a user interface like this has at least two Entry Points: One is the main function called upon startup. The other is the button click event handler for “Show my score”. But maybe there are even more, like another Entry Point being a handler for the event fired when one of the choices gets selected; because then some logic could check if the button should be enabled because all questions got answered. Or another Entry Point for the logic to be executed when the program is close; because then the choices made should be persisted. You see, an Entry Point to me is a function which gets triggered by the user of a software. With batch programs that´s the main function. With GUI programs on the desktop that´s event handlers. With web programs that´s handlers for URL routes. And my basic suggestion to help you with slicing requirements for Spinning is: Slice them in a way so that each increment is related to only one Entry Point function.[2] Entry Points are the “outer functions” of a program. That´s where the environment triggers behavior. That´s where hardware meets software. Entry points always get called because something happened to hardware state, e.g. a key was pressed, a mouse button clicked, the system timer ticked, data arrived over a wire.[3] Viewed from the outside, software is just a collection of Entry Point functions made accessible via buttons to press, menu items to click, gestures, URLs to open, keys to enter. Collections of batch processors I´d thus say, we haven´t moved forward since the early days of software development. We´re still writing batch programs. Forget about “event-driven programming” with its fancy GUI applications. Software is just a collection of batch processors. Earlier it was just one per program, today it´s hundreds we bundle up into applications. Each batch processor is represented by an Entry Point as its root that works on a number of resources from which it reads data to process and to which it writes results. These resources can be the keyboard or main memory or a hard disk or a communication line or a display. Together many batch processors - large and small - form applications the user perceives as a single whole: Software development that way becomes quite simple: just implement one batch processor after another. Well, at least in principle ;-) Features Each batch processor entered through an Entry Point delivers value to the user. It´s an increment. Sometimes its logic is trivial, sometimes it´s very complex. Regardless, each Entry Point represents an increment. An Entry Point implemented thus is a step forward in terms of Agility. At the same time it´s a tangible unit for developers. Therefore, identifying the more or less numerous batch processors in a software system is a rewarding task for product owners and developers alike. That´s where user stories meet code. In this example the user story translates to the Entry Point triggered by clicking the login button on a dialog like this: The batch then retrieves what has been entered via keyboard, loads data from a user store, and finally outputs some kind of response on the screen, e.g. by displaying an error message or showing the next dialog. This is all very simple, but you see, there is not just one thing happening, but several. Get input (email address, password) Load user for email address If user not found report error Check password Hash password Compare hash to hash stored in user Show next dialog Viewed from 10,000 feet it´s all done by the Entry Point function. And of course that´s technically possible. It´s just a bunch of logic and calling a couple of API functions. However, I suggest to take these steps as distinct aspects of the overall requirement described by the user story. Such aspects of requirements I call Features. Features too are increments. Each provides some (small) value of its own to the user. Each can be checked individually by a product owner. Instead of implementing all the logic behind the Login() entry point at once you can move forward increment by increment, e.g. First implement the dialog, let the user enter any credentials, and log him/her in without any checks. Features 1 and 4. Then hard code a single user and check the email address. Features 2 and 2.1. Then check password without hashing it (or use a very simple hash like the length of the password). Features 3. and 3.2 Replace hard coded user with a persistent user directoy, but a very simple one, e.g. a CSV file. Refinement of feature 2. Calculate the real hash for the password. Feature 3.1. Switch to the final user directory technology. Each feature provides an opportunity to deliver results in a short amount of time and get feedback. If you´re in doubt whether you can implement the whole entry point function until tomorrow night, then just go for a couple of features or even just one. That´s also why I think, you should strive for wrapping feature logic into a function of its own. It´s a matter of Evolvability and Production Efficiency. A function per feature makes the code more readable, since the language of requirements analysis and design is carried over into implementation. It makes it easier to apply changes to features because it´s clear where their logic is located. And finally, of course, it lets you re-use features in different context (read: increments). Feature functions make it easier for you to think of features as Spinning increments, to implement them independently, to let the product owner check them for acceptance individually. Increments consist of features, entry point functions consist of feature functions. So you can view software as a hierarchy of requirements from broad to thin which map to a hierarchy of functions - with entry points at the top.   I like this image of software as a self-similar structure on many levels of abstraction where requirements and code match each other. That to me is true agile design: the core tenet of Agility to move forward in increments is carried over into implementation. Increments on paper are retained in code. This way developers can easily relate to product owners. Elusive and fuzzy requirements are not tangible. Software production is moving forward through requirements one increment at a time, and one function at a time. In closing Product owners and developers are different - but they need to work together towards a shared goal: working software. So their notions of software need to be made compatible, they need to be connected. The increments of the product owner - user stories and features - need to be mapped straightforwardly to something which is relevant to developers. To me that´s functions. Yes, functions, not classes nor components nor micro services. We´re talking about behavior, actions, activities, processes. Their natural representation is a function. Something has to be done. Logic has to be executed. That´s the purpose of functions. Later, classes and other containers are needed to stay on top of a growing amount of logic. But to connect developers and product owners functions are the appropriate glue. Functions which represent increments. Can there always be such a small increment be found to deliver until tomorrow evening? I boldly say yes. Yes, it´s always possible. But maybe you´ve to start thinking differently. Maybe the product owner needs to start thinking differently. Completion is not the goal anymore. Neither is checking the delivery of an increment through the user interface of a software. Product owners need to become comfortable using test beds for certain features. If it´s hard to slice requirements thin enough for Spinning the reason is too little knowledge of something. Maybe you don´t yet understand the problem domain well enough? Maybe you don´t yet feel comfortable with some tool or technology? Then it´s time to acknowledge this fact. Be honest about your not knowing. And instead of trying to deliver as a craftsman officially become a researcher. Research an check back with the product owner every day - until your understanding has grown to a level where you are able to define the next Spinning increment. ? Sometimes even thin requirement slices will cover several Entry Points, like “Add validation of email addresses to all relevant dialogs.” Validation then will it put into a dozen functons. Still, though, it´s important to determine which Entry Points exactly get affected. That´s much easier, if strive for keeping the number of Entry Points per increment to 1. ? If you like call Entry Point functions event handlers, because that´s what they are. They all handle events of some kind, whether that´s palpable in your code or note. A public void btnSave_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) {…} might look like an event handler to you, but public static void Main() {…} is one also - for then event “program started”. ?

  • Windows Azure: Announcing release of Windows Azure SDK 2.2 (with lots of goodies)

    - by ScottGu
    Earlier today I blogged about a big update we made today to Windows Azure, and some of the great new features it provides. Today I’m also excited to also announce the release of the Windows Azure SDK 2.2. Today’s SDK release adds even more great features including: Visual Studio 2013 Support Integrated Windows Azure Sign-In support within Visual Studio Remote Debugging Cloud Services with Visual Studio Firewall Management support within Visual Studio for SQL Databases Visual Studio 2013 RTM VM Images for MSDN Subscribers Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET Updated Windows Azure PowerShell Cmdlets and ScriptCenter The below post has more details on what’s available in today’s Windows Azure SDK 2.2 release.  Also head over to Channel 9 to see the new episode of the Visual Studio Toolbox show that will be available shortly, and which highlights these features in a video demonstration. Visual Studio 2013 Support Version 2.2 of the Window Azure SDK is the first official version of the SDK to support the final RTM release of Visual Studio 2013. If you installed the 2.1 SDK with the Preview of Visual Studio 2013 we recommend that you upgrade your projects to SDK 2.2.  SDK 2.2 also works side by side with the SDK 2.0 and SDK 2.1 releases on Visual Studio 2012: Integrated Windows Azure Sign In within Visual Studio Integrated Windows Azure Sign-In support within Visual Studio is one of the big improvements added with this Windows Azure SDK release.  Integrated sign-in support enables developers to develop/test/manage Windows Azure resources within Visual Studio without having to download or use management certificates.  You can now just right-click on the “Windows Azure” icon within the Server Explorer inside Visual Studio and choose the “Connect to Windows Azure” context menu option to connect to Windows Azure: Doing this will prompt you to enter the email address of the account you wish to sign-in with: You can use either a Microsoft Account (e.g. Windows Live ID) or an Organizational account (e.g. Active Directory) as the email.  The dialog will update with an appropriate login prompt depending on which type of email address you enter: Once you sign-in you’ll see the Windows Azure resources that you have permissions to manage show up automatically within the Visual Studio Server Explorer (and you can start using them): With this new integrated sign in experience you are now able to publish web apps, deploy VMs and cloud services, use Windows Azure diagnostics, and fully interact with your Windows Azure services within Visual Studio without the need for a management certificate.  All of the authentication is handled using the Windows Azure Active Directory associated with your Windows Azure account (details on this can be found in my earlier blog post). Integrating authentication this way end-to-end across the Service Management APIs + Dev Tools + Management Portal + PowerShell automation scripts enables a much more secure and flexible security model within Windows Azure, and makes it much more convenient to securely manage multiple developers + administrators working on a project.  It also allows organizations and enterprises to use the same authentication model that they use for their developers on-premises in the cloud.  It also ensures that employees who leave an organization immediately lose access to their company’s cloud based resources once their Active Directory account is suspended. Filtering/Subscription Management Once you login within Visual Studio, you can filter which Windows Azure subscriptions/regions are visible within the Server Explorer by right-clicking the “Filter Services” context menu within the Server Explorer.  You can also use the “Manage Subscriptions” context menu to mange your Windows Azure Subscriptions: Bringing up the “Manage Subscriptions” dialog allows you to see which accounts you are currently using, as well as which subscriptions are within them: The “Certificates” tab allows you to continue to import and use management certificates to manage Windows Azure resources as well.  We have not removed any functionality with today’s update – all of the existing scenarios that previously supported management certificates within Visual Studio continue to work just fine.  The new integrated sign-in support provided with today’s release is purely additive. Note: the SQL Database node and the Mobile Service node in Server Explorer do not support integrated sign-in at this time. Therefore, you will only see databases and mobile services under those nodes if you have a management certificate to authorize access to them.  We will enable them with integrated sign-in in a future update. Remote Debugging Cloud Resources within Visual Studio Today’s Windows Azure SDK 2.2 release adds support for remote debugging many types of Windows Azure resources. With live, remote debugging support from within Visual Studio, you are now able to have more visibility than ever before into how your code is operating live in Windows Azure.  Let’s walkthrough how to enable remote debugging for a Cloud Service: Remote Debugging of Cloud Services To enable remote debugging for your cloud service, select Debug as the Build Configuration on the Common Settings tab of your Cloud Service’s publish dialog wizard: Then click the Advanced Settings tab and check the Enable Remote Debugging for all roles checkbox: Once your cloud service is published and running live in the cloud, simply set a breakpoint in your local source code: Then use Visual Studio’s Server Explorer to select the Cloud Service instance deployed in the cloud, and then use the Attach Debugger context menu on the role or to a specific VM instance of it: Once the debugger attaches to the Cloud Service, and a breakpoint is hit, you’ll be able to use the rich debugging capabilities of Visual Studio to debug the cloud instance remotely, in real-time, and see exactly how your app is running in the cloud. Today’s remote debugging support is super powerful, and makes it much easier to develop and test applications for the cloud.  Support for remote debugging Cloud Services is available as of today, and we’ll also enable support for remote debugging Web Sites shortly. Firewall Management Support with SQL Databases By default we enable a security firewall around SQL Databases hosted within Windows Azure.  This ensures that only your application (or IP addresses you approve) can connect to them and helps make your infrastructure secure by default.  This is great for protection at runtime, but can sometimes be a pain at development time (since by default you can’t connect/manage the database remotely within Visual Studio if the security firewall blocks your instance of VS from connecting to it). One of the cool features we’ve added with today’s release is support that makes it easy to enable and configure the security firewall directly within Visual Studio.  Now with the SDK 2.2 release, when you try and connect to a SQL Database using the Visual Studio Server Explorer, and a firewall rule prevents access to the database from your machine, you will be prompted to add a firewall rule to enable access from your local IP address: You can simply click Add Firewall Rule and a new rule will be automatically added for you. In some cases, the logic to detect your local IP may not be sufficient (for example: you are behind a corporate firewall that uses a range of IP addresses) and you may need to set up a firewall rule for a range of IP addresses in order to gain access. The new Add Firewall Rule dialog also makes this easy to do.  Once connected you’ll be able to manage your SQL Database directly within the Visual Studio Server Explorer: This makes it much easier to work with databases in the cloud. Visual Studio 2013 RTM Virtual Machine Images Available for MSDN Subscribers Last week we released the General Availability Release of Visual Studio 2013 to the web.  This is an awesome release with a ton of new features. With today’s Windows Azure update we now have a set of pre-configured VM images of VS 2013 available within the Windows Azure Management Portal for use by MSDN customers.  This enables you to create a VM in the cloud with VS 2013 pre-installed on it in with only a few clicks: Windows Azure now provides the fastest and easiest way to get started doing development with Visual Studio 2013. Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET (Preview) Having the ability to automate the creation, deployment, and tear down of resources is a key requirement for applications running in the cloud.  It also helps immensely when running dev/test scenarios and coded UI tests against pre-production environments. Today we are releasing a preview of a new set of Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET.  These new libraries make it easy to automate tasks using any .NET language (e.g. C#, VB, F#, etc).  Previously this automation capability was only available through the Windows Azure PowerShell Cmdlets or to developers who were willing to write their own wrappers for the Windows Azure Service Management REST API. Modern .NET Developer Experience We’ve worked to design easy-to-understand .NET APIs that still map well to the underlying REST endpoints, making sure to use and expose the modern .NET functionality that developers expect today: Portable Class Library (PCL) support targeting applications built for any .NET Platform (no platform restriction) Shipped as a set of focused NuGet packages with minimal dependencies to simplify versioning Support async/await task based asynchrony (with easy sync overloads) Shared infrastructure for common error handling, tracing, configuration, HTTP pipeline manipulation, etc. Factored for easy testability and mocking Built on top of popular libraries like HttpClient and Json.NET Below is a list of a few of the management client classes that are shipping with today’s initial preview release: .NET Class Name Supports Operations for these Assets (and potentially more) ManagementClient Locations Credentials Subscriptions Certificates ComputeManagementClient Hosted Services Deployments Virtual Machines Virtual Machine Images & Disks StorageManagementClient Storage Accounts WebSiteManagementClient Web Sites Web Site Publish Profiles Usage Metrics Repositories VirtualNetworkManagementClient Networks Gateways Automating Creating a Virtual Machine using .NET Let’s walkthrough an example of how we can use the new Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET to fully automate creating a Virtual Machine. I’m deliberately showing a scenario with a lot of custom options configured – including VHD image gallery enumeration, attaching data drives, network endpoints + firewall rules setup - to show off the full power and richness of what the new library provides. We’ll begin with some code that demonstrates how to enumerate through the built-in Windows images within the standard Windows Azure VM Gallery.  We’ll search for the first VM image that has the word “Windows” in it and use that as our base image to build the VM from.  We’ll then create a cloud service container in the West US region to host it within: We can then customize some options on it such as setting up a computer name, admin username/password, and hostname.  We’ll also open up a remote desktop (RDP) endpoint through its security firewall: We’ll then specify the VHD host and data drives that we want to mount on the Virtual Machine, and specify the size of the VM we want to run it in: Once everything has been set up the call to create the virtual machine is executed asynchronously In a few minutes we’ll then have a completely deployed VM running on Windows Azure with all of the settings (hard drives, VM size, machine name, username/password, network endpoints + firewall settings) fully configured and ready for us to use: Preview Availability via NuGet The Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET are now available via NuGet. Because they are still in preview form, you’ll need to add the –IncludePrerelease switch when you go to retrieve the packages. The Package Manager Console screen shot below demonstrates how to get the entire set of libraries to manage your Windows Azure assets: You can also install them within your .NET projects by right clicking on the VS Solution Explorer and using the Manage NuGet Packages context menu command.  Make sure to select the “Include Prerelease” drop-down for them to show up, and then you can install the specific management libraries you need for your particular scenarios: Open Source License The new Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET make it super easy to automate management operations within Windows Azure – whether they are for Virtual Machines, Cloud Services, Storage Accounts, Web Sites, and more.  Like the rest of the Windows Azure SDK, we are releasing the source code under an open source (Apache 2) license and it is hosted at https://github.com/WindowsAzure/azure-sdk-for-net/tree/master/libraries if you wish to contribute. PowerShell Enhancements and our New Script Center Today, we are also shipping Windows Azure PowerShell 0.7.0 (which is a separate download). You can find the full change log here. Here are some of the improvements provided with it: Windows Azure Active Directory authentication support Script Center providing many sample scripts to automate common tasks on Windows Azure New cmdlets for Media Services and SQL Database Script Center Windows Azure enables you to script and automate a lot of tasks using PowerShell.  People often ask for more pre-built samples of common scenarios so that they can use them to learn and tweak/customize. With this in mind, we are excited to introduce a new Script Center that we are launching for Windows Azure. You can learn about how to scripting with Windows Azure with a get started article. You can then find many sample scripts across different solutions, including infrastructure, data management, web, and more: All of the sample scripts are hosted on TechNet with links from the Windows Azure Script Center. Each script is complete with good code comments, detailed descriptions, and examples of usage. Summary Visual Studio 2013 and the Windows Azure SDK 2.2 make it easier than ever to get started developing rich cloud applications. Along with the Windows Azure Developer Center’s growing set of .NET developer resources to guide your development efforts, today’s Windows Azure SDK 2.2 release should make your development experience more enjoyable and efficient. If you don’t already have a Windows Azure account, you can sign-up for a free trial and start using all of the above features today.  Then visit the Windows Azure Developer Center to learn more about how to build apps with it. • Plan Caching and Query Memory Part II (Hash Match) – When not to use stored procedure - Most common performance mistake SQL Server developers make.

    - by sqlworkshops
    SQL Server estimates Memory requirement at compile time, when stored procedure or other plan caching mechanisms like sp_executesql or prepared statement are used, the memory requirement is estimated based on first set of execution parameters. This is a common reason for spill over tempdb and hence poor performance. Common memory allocating queries are that perform Sort and do Hash Match operations like Hash Join or Hash Aggregation or Hash Union. This article covers Hash Match operations with examples. It is recommended to read Plan Caching and Query Memory Part I before this article which covers an introduction and Query memory for Sort. In most cases it is cheaper to pay for the compilation cost of dynamic queries than huge cost for spill over tempdb, unless memory requirement for a query does not change significantly based on predicates.   This article covers underestimation / overestimation of memory for Hash Match operation. Plan Caching and Query Memory Part I covers underestimation / overestimation for Sort. It is important to note that underestimation of memory for Sort and Hash Match operations lead to spill over tempdb and hence negatively impact performance. Overestimation of memory affects the memory needs of other concurrently executing queries. In addition, it is important to note, with Hash Match operations, overestimation of memory can actually lead to poor performance.   To read additional articles I wrote click here.   The best way to learn is to practice. To create the below tables and reproduce the behavior, join the mailing list by using this link: www.sqlworkshops.com/ml and I will send you the table creation script. Most of these concepts are also covered in our webcasts: www.sqlworkshops.com/webcasts  Let’s create a Customer’s State table that has 99% of customers in NY and the rest 1% in WA.Customers table used in Part I of this article is also used here.To observe Hash Warning, enable 'Hash Warning' in SQL Profiler under Events 'Errors and Warnings'. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com drop table CustomersState go create table CustomersState (CustomerID int primary key, Address char(200), State char(2)) go insert into CustomersState (CustomerID, Address) select CustomerID, 'Address' from Customers update CustomersState set State = 'NY' where CustomerID % 100 != 1 update CustomersState set State = 'WA' where CustomerID % 100 = 1 go update statistics CustomersState with fullscan go   Let’s create a stored procedure that joins customers with CustomersState table with a predicate on State. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com create proc CustomersByState @State char(2) as begin declare @CustomerID int select @CustomerID = e.CustomerID from Customers e inner join CustomersState es on (e.CustomerID = es.CustomerID) where es.State = @State option (maxdop 1) end go  Let’s execute the stored procedure first with parameter value ‘WA’ – which will select 1% of data. set statistics time on go --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByState 'WA' goThe stored procedure took 294 ms to complete.  The stored procedure was granted 6704 KB based on 8000 rows being estimated.  The estimated number of rows, 8000 is similar to actual number of rows 8000 and hence the memory estimation should be ok.  There was no Hash Warning in SQL Profiler. To observe Hash Warning, enable 'Hash Warning' in SQL Profiler under Events 'Errors and Warnings'.   Now let’s execute the stored procedure with parameter value ‘NY’ – which will select 99% of data. -Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByState 'NY' go  The stored procedure took 2922 ms to complete.   The stored procedure was granted 6704 KB based on 8000 rows being estimated.    The estimated number of rows, 8000 is way different from the actual number of rows 792000 because the estimation is based on the first set of parameter value supplied to the stored procedure which is ‘WA’ in our case. This underestimation will lead to spill over tempdb, resulting in poor performance.   There was Hash Warning (Recursion) in SQL Profiler. To observe Hash Warning, enable 'Hash Warning' in SQL Profiler under Events 'Errors and Warnings'.   Let’s recompile the stored procedure and then let’s first execute the stored procedure with parameter value ‘NY’.  In a production instance it is not advisable to use sp_recompile instead one should use DBCC FREEPROCCACHE (plan_handle). This is due to locking issues involved with sp_recompile, refer to our webcasts, www.sqlworkshops.com/webcasts for further details.   exec sp_recompile CustomersByState go --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByState 'NY' go  Now the stored procedure took only 1046 ms instead of 2922 ms.   The stored procedure was granted 146752 KB of memory. The estimated number of rows, 792000 is similar to actual number of rows of 792000. Better performance of this stored procedure execution is due to better estimation of memory and avoiding spill over tempdb.   There was no Hash Warning in SQL Profiler.   Now let’s execute the stored procedure with parameter value ‘WA’. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByState 'WA' go  The stored procedure took 351 ms to complete, higher than the previous execution time of 294 ms.    This stored procedure was granted more memory (146752 KB) than necessary (6704 KB) based on parameter value ‘NY’ for estimation (792000 rows) instead of parameter value ‘WA’ for estimation (8000 rows). This is because the estimation is based on the first set of parameter value supplied to the stored procedure which is ‘NY’ in this case. This overestimation leads to poor performance of this Hash Match operation, it might also affect the performance of other concurrently executing queries requiring memory and hence overestimation is not recommended.     The estimated number of rows, 792000 is much more than the actual number of rows of 8000.  Intermediate Summary: This issue can be avoided by not caching the plan for memory allocating queries. Other possibility is to use recompile hint or optimize for hint to allocate memory for predefined data range.Let’s recreate the stored procedure with recompile hint. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com drop proc CustomersByState go create proc CustomersByState @State char(2) as begin declare @CustomerID int select @CustomerID = e.CustomerID from Customers e inner join CustomersState es on (e.CustomerID = es.CustomerID) where es.State = @State option (maxdop 1, recompile) end go  Let’s execute the stored procedure initially with parameter value ‘WA’ and then with parameter value ‘NY’. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByState 'WA' go exec CustomersByState 'NY' go  The stored procedure took 297 ms and 1102 ms in line with previous optimal execution times.   The stored procedure with parameter value ‘WA’ has good estimation like before.   Estimated number of rows of 8000 is similar to actual number of rows of 8000.   The stored procedure with parameter value ‘NY’ also has good estimation and memory grant like before because the stored procedure was recompiled with current set of parameter values.  Estimated number of rows of 792000 is similar to actual number of rows of 792000.    The compilation time and compilation CPU of 1 ms is not expensive in this case compared to the performance benefit.   There was no Hash Warning in SQL Profiler.   Let’s recreate the stored procedure with optimize for hint of ‘NY’. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com drop proc CustomersByState go create proc CustomersByState @State char(2) as begin declare @CustomerID int select @CustomerID = e.CustomerID from Customers e inner join CustomersState es on (e.CustomerID = es.CustomerID) where es.State = @State option (maxdop 1, optimize for (@State = 'NY')) end go  Let’s execute the stored procedure initially with parameter value ‘WA’ and then with parameter value ‘NY’. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByState 'WA' go exec CustomersByState 'NY' go  The stored procedure took 353 ms with parameter value ‘WA’, this is much slower than the optimal execution time of 294 ms we observed previously. This is because of overestimation of memory. The stored procedure with parameter value ‘NY’ has optimal execution time like before.   The stored procedure with parameter value ‘WA’ has overestimation of rows because of optimize for hint value of ‘NY’.   Unlike before, more memory was estimated to this stored procedure based on optimize for hint value ‘NY’.    The stored procedure with parameter value ‘NY’ has good estimation because of optimize for hint value of ‘NY’. Estimated number of rows of 792000 is similar to actual number of rows of 792000.   Optimal amount memory was estimated to this stored procedure based on optimize for hint value ‘NY’.   There was no Hash Warning in SQL Profiler. Summary: Cached plan might lead to underestimation or overestimation of memory because the memory is estimated based on first set of execution parameters. It is recommended not to cache the plan if the amount of memory required to execute the stored procedure has a wide range of possibilities. One can mitigate this by using recompile hint, but that will lead to compilation overhead. However, in most cases it might be ok to pay for compilation rather than spilling sort over tempdb which could be very expensive compared to compilation cost. The other possibility is to use optimize for hint, but in case one sorts more data than hinted by optimize for hint, this will still lead to spill. On the other side there is also the possibility of overestimation leading to unnecessary memory issues for other concurrently executing queries. In case of Hash Match operations, this overestimation of memory might lead to poor performance. When the values used in optimize for hint are archived from the database, the estimation will be wrong leading to worst performance, so one has to exercise caution before using optimize for hint, recompile hint is better in this case.   I explain these concepts with detailed examples in my webcasts (www.sqlworkshops.com/webcasts), I recommend you to watch them. • ANY way to consolidate this code?

    - by JM4
    I am building a PHP registration form which takes the following fields for up to 20 athletes: First Name Middle Initial Last Name Federation Number Address City State Zip DOB SSN Phone Email I am only through 7 of the fields for each fighter and my php file is very large (over 40kb). Is there ANY way to consolidate this code at all? I am also having to validate the information on each field (as I said - 20 athletes x 12 fields = 240 validations on a single page). If I can send any further code let me know! <form id="Form" action="<?php $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']; ?>" method="post" name="Form" onsubmit="return Enroll_Form_Validator(this)"> <p class="title">Your Fighters' Information</p> <p>Please complete the following fields with your <span style="color:red;"> Fighters' Information</span> to continue your enrollment.</p> <br /> <?php // if $errors is not empty, the form must have failed one or more validation // tests. • EF4 generates invalid script

    - by Jaxidian
    When I right-click in a .EDMX file and click Generate Database From Model, the resulting script is obviously wrong because of the table names. What it generates is the following script. Note the table names in the DROP TABLE part versus the CREATE TABLE part. Why is this inconsistent? This is obviously not a reusable script. What I created was an Entity named "Address" and an Entity named "Company", etc (all singular). The EntitySet names are pluralized. The "Pluralize New Objects" boolean does not change this either. So what's the deal? For what it's worth, I originally generated the EDMX by pointing it to a database that had tables with non-pluralized names and now that I've made some changes, I want to go back the other way. I'd like to have the option to go back and forth as neither the db-first nor the model-first model is ideal in all scenarios, and I have the control to ensure that there will be no merging issues from multiple people going both ways at the same time. -- -------------------------------------------------- -- Dropping existing FOREIGN KEY constraints -- NOTE: if the constraint does not exist, an ignorable error will be reported. -- -------------------------------------------------- ALTER TABLE [Address] DROP CONSTRAINT [FK_Address_StateID-State_ID]; • PASS: Bylaw Changes

    - by Bill Graziano
    While you’re reading this, a post should be going up on the PASS blog on the plans to change our bylaws.  You should be able to find our old bylaws, our proposed bylaws and a red-lined version of the changes.  We plan to listen to feedback until March 31st.  At that point we’ll decide whether to vote on these changes or take other action. The executive summary is that we’re adding a restriction to prevent more than two people from the same company on the Board and eliminating the Board’s Officer Appointment Committee to have Officers directly elected by the Board.  This second change better matches how officer elections have been conducted in the past. The Gritty Details Our scope was to change bylaws to match how PASS actually works and tackle a limited set of issues.  Changing the bylaws is hard.  We’ve been working on these changes since the March board meeting last year.  At that meeting we met and talked through the issues we wanted to address.  In years past the Board has tried to come up with language and then we’ve discussed and negotiated to get to the result.  In March, we gave HQ guidance on what we wanted and asked them to come up with a starting point.  Hannes worked on building us an initial set of changes that we could work our way through.  Discussing changes like this over email is difficult wasn’t very productive.  We do a much better job on this at the in-person Board meetings.  Unfortunately there are only 2 or 3 of those a year. In August we met in Nashville and spent time discussing the changes.  That was also the day after we released the slate for the 2010 election. The discussion around that colored what we talked about in terms of these changes.  We talked very briefly at the Summit and again reviewed and revised the changes at the Board meeting in January.  This is the result of those changes and discussions. We made numerous small changes to clean up language and make wording more clear.  We also made two big changes. Director Employment Restrictions The first is that only two people from the same company can serve on the Board at the same time.  The actual language in section VI.3 reads: A maximum of two (2) Directors who are employed by, or who are joint owners or partners in, the same for-profit venture, company, organization, or other legal entity, may concurrently serve on the PASS Board of Directors at any time. The definition of “employed” is at the sole discretion of the Board. And what a mess this turns out to be in practice.  Our membership is a hodgepodge of interlocking relationships.  Let’s say three Board members get together and start a blog service for SQL Server bloggers.  It’s technically for-profit.  Let’s assume it makes $8 in the first year.  Does that trigger this clause?  (Technically yes.)  We had a horrible time trying to write language that covered everything.  All the sample bylaws that we found were just as vague as this. That led to the third clause in this section.  The first sentence reads: The Board of Directors reserves the right, strictly on a case-by-case basis, to overrule the requirements of Section VI.3 by majority decision for any single Director’s conflict of employment. We needed some way to handle the trivial issues and exercise some judgment.  It seems like a public vote is the best way.  This discloses the relationship and gets each Board member on record on the issue.   In practice I think this clause will rarely be used.  I think this entire section will only be invoked for actual employment issues and not for small side projects.  In either case we have the mechanisms in place to handle it in a public, transparent way. That’s the first and third clauses.  The second clause says that if your situation changes and you fall afoul of this restriction you need to notify the Board.  The clause further states that if this new job means a Board members violates the “two-per-company” rule the Board may request their resignation.  The Board can also  allow the person to continue serving with a majority vote.  I think this will also take some judgment.  Consider a person switching jobs that leads to three people from the same company.  I’m very likely to ask for someone to resign if all three are two weeks into a two year term.  I’m unlikely to ask anyone to resign if one is two weeks away from ending their term.  In either case, the decision will be a public vote that we can be held accountable for. One concern that was raised was whether this would affect someone choosing to accept a job.  I think that’s a choice for them to make.  PASS is clearly stating its intent that only two directors from any one organization should serve at any time.  Once these bylaws are approved, this policy should not come as a surprise to any potential or current Board members considering a job change.  This clause isn’t perfect.  The biggest hole is business relationships that aren’t defined above.  Let’s say that two employees from company “X” serve on the Board.  What happens if I accept a full-time consulting contract with that company?  Let’s assume I’m working directly for one of the two existing Board members.  That doesn’t violate section VI.3.  But I think it’s clearly the kind of relationship we’d like to prevent.  Unfortunately that was even harder to write than what we have now.  I fully expect that in the next revision of the bylaws we’ll address this.  It just didn’t make it into this one. Officer Elections The officer election process received a slightly different rewrite.  Our goal was to codify in the bylaws the actual process we used to elect the officers.  The officers are the President, Executive Vice-President (EVP) and Vice-President of Marketing.  The Immediate Past President (IPP) is also an officer but isn’t elected.  The IPP serves in that role for two years after completing their term as President.  We do that for continuity’s sake.  Some organizations have a President-elect that serves for one or two years.  The group that founded PASS chose to have an IPP. When I started on the Board, the Nominating Committee (NomCom) selected the slate for the at-large directors and the slate for the officers.  There was always one candidate for each officer position.  It wasn’t really an election so much as the NomCom decided who the next person would be for each officer position.  Behind the scenes the Board worked to select the best people for the role. In June 2009 that process was changed to bring it line with what actually happens.  An Officer Appointment Committee was created that was a subset of the Board.  That committee would take time to interview the candidates and present a slate to the Board for approval.  The majority vote of the Board would determine the officers for the next two years.  In practice the Board itself interviewed the candidates and conducted the elections.  That means it was time to change the bylaws again. Section VII.2 and VII.3 spell out the process used to select the officers.  We use the phrase “Officer Appointment” to separate it from the Director election but the end result is that the Board elects the officers.  Section VII.3 starts: Officers shall be appointed bi-annually by a majority of all the voting members of the Board of Directors. Everything else revolves around that sentence.  We use the word appoint but they truly are elected.  There are details in the bylaws for term limits, minimum requirements for President (1 prior term as an officer), tie breakers and filling vacancies. In practice we will have an election for President, then an election for EVP and then an election for VP Marketing.  That means that losing candidates will be able to fall down the ladder and run for the next open position.  Another point to note is that officers aren’t at-large directors.  That means if a current sitting officer loses all three elections they are off the Board.  Having Board member votes public will help with the transparency of this approach. This process has a number of positive and negatives.  The biggest concern I expect to hear is that our members don’t directly choose the officers.  I’m going to try and list all the positives and negatives of this approach. Many non-profits value continuity and are slower to change than a business.  On the plus side this promotes that.  On the negative side this promotes that.  If we change too slowly the members complain that we aren’t responsive.  If we change too quickly we make mistakes and fail at various things.  We’ve been criticized for both of those lately so I’m not entirely sure where to draw the line.  My rough assumption to this point is that we’re going too slow on governance and too quickly on becoming “more than a Summit.”  This approach creates competition in the officer elections.  If you are an at-large director there is no consequence to losing an election.  If you are an officer the only way to stay on the Board is to win an officer election or an at-large election.  If you are an officer and lose an election you can always run for the next office down.  This makes it very easy for multiple people to contest an election. There is value in a person moving through the officer positions up to the Presidency.  Having the Board select the officers promotes this.  The down side is that it takes a LOT of time to get to the Presidency.  We’ve had good people struggle with burnout.  We’ve had lots of discussion around this.  The process as we’ve described it here makes it possible for someone to move quickly through the ranks but doesn’t prevent people from working their way up through each role. We talked long and hard about having the officers elected by the members.  We had a self-imposed deadline to complete these changes prior to elections this summer. The other challenge was that our original goal was to make the bylaws reflect our actual process rather than create a new one.  I believe we accomplished this goal. We ran out of time to consider this option in the detail it needs.  Having member elections for officers needs a number of problems solved.  We would need a way for candidates to fall through the election.  This is what promotes competition.  Without this few people would risk an election and we’ll be back to one candidate per slot.  We need to do this without having multiple elections.  We may be able to copy what other organizations are doing but I was surprised at how little I could find on other organizations.  We also need a way for people that lose an officer election to win an at-large election.  Otherwise we’ll have very little competition for officers. This brings me to an area that I think we as a Board haven’t done a good job.  We haven’t built a strong process to tell you who is doing a good job and who isn’t.  This is a double-edged sword.  I don’t want to highlight Board members that are failing.  That’s not a good way to get people to volunteer and run for the Board.  But I also need a way let the members make an informed choice about who is doing a good job and would make a good officer.  Encouraging Board members to blog, publishing minutes and making votes public helps in that regard but isn’t the final answer.  I don’t know what the final answer is yet.  I do know that the Board members themselves are uniquely positioned to know which other Board members are doing good work.  They know who speaks up in meetings, who works to build consensus, who has good ideas and who works with the members.  What I Could Do Better I’ve learned a lot writing this about how we communicated with our members.  The next time we revise the bylaws I’d do a few things differently.  The biggest change would be to provide better documentation.  The March 2009 minutes provide a very detailed look into what changes we wanted to make to the bylaws.  Looking back, I’m a little surprised at how closely they matched our final changes and covered the various arguments.  If you just read those you’d get 90% of what we eventually changed.  Nearly everything else was just details around implementation.  I’d also consider publishing a scope document defining exactly what we were doing any why.  I think it really helped that we had a limited, defined goal in mind.  I don’t think we did a good job communicating that goal outside the meeting minutes though. That said, I wish I’d blogged more after the August and January meeting.  I think it would have helped more people to know that this change was coming and to be ready for it. Conclusion These changes address two big concerns that the Board had.  First, it prevents a single organization from dominating the Board.  Second, it codifies and clearly spells out how officers are elected.  This is the process that was previously followed but it was somewhat murky.  These changes bring clarity to this and clearly explain the process the Board will follow. We’re going to listen to feedback until March 31st.  At that time we’ll decide whether to approve these changes.  I’m also assuming that we’ll start another round of changes in the next year or two.  Are there other issues in the bylaws that we should tackle in the future?

  • A couple PHP/MySQL questions...

    - by Jeff
    I am a college student taking a course in php and mysql progamming and my first question is about the "$variable" variables in the following code: <?php ob_start(); ?> <?php session_start(); if ($_SESSION['auth'] != "true") { header("Location: login.php"); exit; } $uid = $_SESSION['user']; $connection = mysql_connect("localhost", "username", "password"); mysql_select_db("username", $connection); $result = mysql_query ( "SELECT * FROM users where user_id = '$uid'", $connection); $num = mysql_numrows($result); $i=0; while ($i < $num) { $f1=mysql_result($result,$i,"firstname"); $f2=mysql_result($result,$i,"lastname"); ?> <html><body> <p> <td><center><font size = "18" face="Arial"><?php echo "Name: $f1 "; echo $f2; ?> </font></center></td> </p> </body></html> <?php $i++; } ?> <?php $result1 = mysql_query ( "SELECT * FROM phone where user_id = '$uid'", $connection); $num1 = mysql_numrows($result1); $j=0; while ($j < $num1) { $f3=mysql_result($result1,$j,"type"); $f4=mysql_result($result1,$j,"number"); ?> <html><body> <p> <br> <td><center><font size = "12" face="Arial"><?php echo "$f5: "; echo "($f3) "; echo "$f4 <br />"; ?> </font></center></td> </p> </body></html> <?php $j++; } ?> <?php $result2 = mysql_query ( "SELECT * FROM address where user_id = '$uid'", $connection); $num2 = mysql_numrows($result2); $h=0; while ($h < $num2) { $f6=mysql_result($result2,$h,"type"); $f7=mysql_result($result2,$h,"address"); $f8=mysql_result($result2,$h,"city"); $f9=mysql_result($result2,$h,"state"); $f10=mysql_result($result2,$h,"zip"); ?> <html><body> <p> <br> <td><center><font size = "12" face="Arial"><?php echo "$f10 Address: $f6, $f7, $f8 $f9"; ?></font></center></td> </p> </body></html> <?php $h++; } ?> <?php include 'navbar.php'; ob_end_flush(); ?> I just don't really understand the $variables at all. Are they user-generated or are they entities in the database? And how does the code know which $result is which? My second question is that, if this was someone else in my class's code and I wanted to modify it to make it my own and substitute my own variables, how would I go about doing that? Do the $variables need to be changed if they are not user-defined and if so, how? I apologize if these are dumb questions, but I am a beginner at this programming language. Thanks in advance for your help. -Jeff

  • h:commandButton not working within PrimeFaces p:dataTable

    - by JamesB
    I have a PrimeFaces datatable. For each row in this table, I want to allow the user to update/delete the row entry (a user). <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:f="http://java.sun.com/jsf/core" xmlns:h="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html" xmlns:p="http://primefaces.prime.com.tr/ui"> <h:head> <link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" href="themes/bluesky/skin.css" /> </h:head> <h:body> <center> <h:form> <p:panel id="viewUsersPanel" header="View Users"> <p:dataTable var="user" value="#{uController.users}" emptyMessage="No Users Found."> <p:column style="text-align: center;"> <f:facet name="header"> <h:outputText value="Name" /> </f:facet> <h:outputText value="#{user.name}" /> </p:column> <p:column style="text-align: center;"> <f:facet name="header"> <h:outputText value="Postal Address" /> </f:facet> <h:outputText value="#{user.address}" /> </p:column> <p:column style="text-align: center;"> <f:facet name="header"> <h:outputText value="Phone Number" /> </f:facet> <h:outputText value="#{user.phone}" /> </p:column> <p:column style="text-align: center;"> <f:facet name="header"> <h:outputText value="Email Address" /> </f:facet> <h:outputText value="#{user.email}" /> </p:column> <p:column style="text-align: center;"> <f:facet name="header"> <h:outputText value="DOB" /> </f:facet> <h:outputText value="#{user.dob}"> <f:convertDateTime pattern="dd-MMM-yyyy" /> </h:outputText> </p:column> <p:column style="text-align: center;"> <f:facet name="header"> <h:outputText value="No. Memberships" /> </f:facet> <h:outputText value="#{user.numberOfMemberships}" /> </p:column> <p:column style="text-align: center;"> <f:facet name="header"> <h:outputText value="Actions" /> </f:facet> <h:commandButton value="Update" action="#{uController.update}" /> <h:commandButton value="Delete" action="#{uController.delete}" /> </p:column> </p:dataTable> <h:panelGrid columns="2" cellpadding="2" id="footerPanelGrid" border="0"> <h:commandButton action="#{uController.home}" value="Home Page" /> </h:panelGrid> </p:panel> </h:form> </center> </h:body> </html> However, neither of the buttons work. Instead they appear to simply refresh the view page. I have ran the app in debug and neither update or delete method is hit. I suspect this may be due to using h:commandButton within a p:dataTable. However, I have also tried p:commandButton but to no avail. For reference, here is a snippet of the UserController class: @ManagedBean(name="uController") public class UserController extends AbstractController { private Collection<User> users; ... public String update() { System.out.println("Ready for update"); return "update-user"; } public String delete() { System.out.println("Ready for delete"); return "delete-user"; } ... }

  • PASS: Bylaw Change 2013

    - by Bill Graziano
    PASS launched a Global Growth Initiative in the Summer of 2011 with the appointment of three international Board advisors.  Since then we’ve thought and talked extensively about how we make PASS more relevant to our members outside the US and Canada.  We’ve collected much of that discussion in our Global Growth site.  You can find vision documents, plans, governance proposals, feedback sites, and transcripts of Twitter chats and town hall meetings.  We also address these plans at the Board Q&A during the 2012 Summit. One of the biggest changes coming out of this process is around how we elect Board members.  And that requires a change to the bylaws.  We published the proposed bylaw changes as a red-lined document so you can clearly see the changes.  Our goal in these bylaw changes was to address the changes required by the global growth initiatives, conduct a legal review of the document and address other minor issues in the document.  There are numerous small wording changes throughout the document.  For example, we replaced every reference of “The Corporation” with the word “PASS” so it now reads “PASS is organized…”. Board Composition The biggest change in these bylaw changes is how the Board is composed and elected.  This discussion starts in section VI.2.  This section now says that some elected directors will come from geographic regions.  I think this is the best way to make sure we give all of our members a voice in the leadership of the organization.  The key parts of this section are: The remaining Directors (i.e. the non-Officer Directors and non-Vendor Appointed Directors) shall be elected by the voting membership (“Elected Directors”). Elected Directors shall include representatives of defined PASS regions (“Regions”) as set forth below (“Regional Directors”) and at minimum one (1) additional Director-at-Large whose selection is not limited by region. Regional Directors shall include, but are not limited to, two (2) seats for the Region covering Canada and the United States of America. Additional Regions for the purpose of electing additional Regional Directors and additional Director-at-Large seats for the purpose of expanding the Board shall be defined by a majority vote of the current Board of Directors and must be established prior to the public call for nominations in the general election. Previously defined Regions and seats approved by the Board of Directors shall remain in effect and can only be modified by a 2/3 majority vote by the then current Board of Directors. Currently PASS has six At-Large Directors elected by the members.  These changes allow for a Regional Director position that is elected by the members but must come from a particular region.  It also stipulates that there must always be at least one Director-at-Large who can come from any region. We also understand that PASS is currently a very US-centric organization.  Our Summit is held in America, roughly half our chapters are in the US and Canada and most of the Board members over the last ten years have come from America.  We wanted to reflect that by making sure that our US and Canadian volunteers would continue to play a significant role by ensuring that two Regional seats are reserved specifically for Canada and the US. Other than that, the bylaws don’t create any specific regional seats.  These rules allow us to create Regional Director seats but don’t require it.  We haven’t fully discussed what the criteria will be in order for a region to have a seat designated for it or how many regions there will be.  In our discussions we’ve broadly discussed regions for United States and Canada Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) Australia, New Zealand and Asia (also known as Asia Pacific or APAC) Mexico, South America, and Central America (LATAM) As you can see, our thinking is that there will be a few large regions.  I’ve also considered a non-North America region that we can gradually split into the regions above as our membership grows in those areas.  The regions will be defined by a policy document that will be published prior to the elections. I’m hoping that over the next year we can begin to publish more of what we do as Board-approved policy documents. While the bylaws only require a single non-region specific At-large Director, I would expect we would always have two.  That way we can have one in each election.  I think it’s important that we always have one seat open that anyone who is eligible to run for the Board can contest.  The Board is required to have any regions defined prior to the start of the election process. Board Elections – Regional Seats We spent a lot of time discussing how the elections would work for these Regional Director seats.  Ultimately we decided that the simplest solution is that every PASS member should vote for every open seat.  Section VIII.3 reads: Candidates who are eligible (i.e. eligible to serve in such capacity subject to the criteria set forth herein or adopted by the Board of Directors) shall be designated to fill open Board seats in the following order of priority on the basis of total votes received: (i) full term Regional Director seats, (ii) full term Director-at-Large seats, (iii) not full term (vacated) Regional Director seats, (iv) not full term (vacated) Director-at-Large seats. For the purposes of clarity, because of eligibility requirements, it is contemplated that the candidates designated to the open Board seats may not receive more votes than certain other candidates who are not selected to the Board. We debated whether to have multiple ballots or one single ballot.  Multiple ballot elections get complicated quickly.  Let’s say we have a ballot for US/Canada and one for Region 2.  After that we’d need a mechanism to merge those two together and come up with the winner of the at-large seat or have another election for the at-large position.  We think the best way to do this is a single ballot and putting the highest vote getters into the most restrictive seats.  Let’s look at an example: There are seats open for Region 1, Region 2 and at-large.  The election results are as follows: Candidate A (eligible for Region 1) – 550 votes Candidate B (eligible for Region 1) – 525 votes Candidate C (eligible for Region 1) – 475 votes Candidate D (eligible for Region 2) – 125 votes Candidate E (eligible for Region 2) – 75 votes In this case, Candidate A is the winner for Region 1 and is assigned that seat.  Candidate D is the winner for Region 2 and is assigned that seat.  The at-large seat is filled by the high remaining vote getter which is Candidate B. The key point to understand is that we may have a situation where a person with a lower vote total is elected to a regional seat and a person with a higher vote total is excluded.  This will be true whether we had multiple ballots or a single ballot.  Board Elections – Vacant Seats The other change to the election process is for vacant Board seats.  The actual changes are sprinkled throughout the document. Previously we didn’t have a mechanism that allowed for an election of a Board seat that we knew would be vacant in the future.  The most common case is when a Board members moves to an Officer role in the middle of their term.  One of the key changes is to allow the number of votes members have to match the number of open seats.  This allows each voter to express their preference on all open seats.  This only applies when we know about the opening prior to the call for nominations.  This all means that if there’s a seat will be open at the start of the next Board term, and we know about it prior to the call for nominations, we can include that seat in the elections.  Ultimately, the aim is to have PASS members decide who sits on the Board in as many situations as possible. We discussed the option of changing the bylaws to just take next highest vote-getter in all other cases.  I think that’s wrong for the following reasons: All voters aren’t able to express an opinion on all candidates.  If there are five people running for three seats, you can only vote for three.  You have no way to express your preference between #4 and #5. Different candidates may have different information about the number of seats available.  A person may learn that a Board member plans to resign at the end of the year prior to that information being made public. They may understand that the top four vote getters will end up on the Board while the rest of the members believe there are only three openings.  This may affect someone’s decision to run.  I don’t think this creates a transparent, fair election. Board members may use their knowledge of the election results to decide whether to remain on the Board or not.  Admittedly this one is unlikely but I don’t want to create a situation where this accusation can be leveled. I think the majority of vacancies in the future will be handled through elections.  The bylaw section quoted above also indicates that partial term vacancies will be filled after the full term seats are filled. Removing Directors Section VI.7 on removing directors has always had a clause that allowed members to remove an elected director.  We also had a clause that allowed appointed directors to be removed.  We added a clause that allows the Board to remove for cause any director with a 2/3 majority vote.  The updated text reads: Any Director may be removed for cause by a 2/3 majority vote of the Board of Directors whenever in its judgment the best interests of PASS would be served thereby. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the authority of any Director to act as in an official capacity as a Director or Officer of PASS may be suspended by the Board of Directors for cause. Cause for suspension or removal of a Director shall include but not be limited to failure to meet any Board-approved performance expectations or the presence of a reason for suspension or dismissal as listed in Addendum B of these Bylaws. The first paragraph is updated and the second and third are unchanged (except cleaning up language).  If you scroll down and look at Addendum B of these bylaws you find the following: Cause for suspension or dismissal of a member of the Board of Directors may include: Inability to attend Board meetings on a regular basis. Inability or unwillingness to act in a capacity designated by the Board of Directors. Failure to fulfill the responsibilities of the office. Inability to represent the Region elected to represent Failure to act in a manner consistent with PASS's Bylaws and/or policies. Misrepresentation of responsibility and/or authority. Misrepresentation of PASS. Unresolved conflict of interests with Board responsibilities. Breach of confidentiality. The bold line about your inability to represent your region is what we added to the bylaws in this revision.  We also added a clause to section VII.3 allowing the Board to remove an officer.  That clause is much less restrictive.  It doesn’t require cause and only requires a simple majority. The Board of Directors may remove any Officer whenever in their judgment the best interests of PASS shall be served by such removal. Other There are numerous other small changes throughout the document. Proxy voting.  The laws around how members and Board members proxy votes are specific in Illinois law.  PASS is an Illinois corporation and is subject to Illinois laws.  We changed section IV.5 to come into compliance with those laws.  Specifically this says you can only vote through a proxy if you have a written proxy through your authorized attorney.  English language proficiency.  As we increase our global footprint we come across more members that aren’t native English speakers.  The business of PASS is conducted in English and it’s important that our Board members speak English.  If we get big enough to afford translators, we may be able to relax this but right now we need English language skills for effective Board members. Committees.  The language around committees in section IX is old and dated.  Our lawyers advised us to clean it up.  This section specifically applies to any committees that the Board may form outside of portfolios.  We removed the term limits, quorum and vacancies clause.  We don’t currently have any committees that this would apply to.  The Nominating Committee is covered elsewhere in the bylaws. Electronic Votes.  The change allows the Board to vote via email but the results must be unanimous.  This is to conform with Illinois state law. Immediate Past President.  There was no mechanism to fill the IPP role if an outgoing President chose not to participate.  We changed section VII.8 to allow the Board to invite any previous President to fill the role by majority vote. Nominations Committee.  We’ve opened the language to allow for the transparent election of the Nominations Committee as outlined by the 2011 Election Review Committee. Revocation of Charters. The language surrounding the revocation of charters for local groups was flagged by the lawyers. We have allowed for the local user group to make all necessary payment before considering returning of items to PASS if required. Bylaw notification. We’ve spent countless meetings working on these bylaws with the intent to not open them again any time in the near future. Should the bylaws be opened again, we have included a clause ensuring that the PASS membership is involved. I’m proud that the Board has remained committed to transparency and accountability to members. This clause will require that same level of commitment in the future even when all the current Board members have rolled off. I think that covers everything.  I’d encourage you to look through the red-line document and see the changes.  It’s helpful to look at the language that’s being removed and the language that’s being added.  I’m happy to answer any questions here or you can email them to [email protected].

  • Duplex communication using NetTcpBinding - ContractFilter mismatch?

    - by Shaul
    I'm making slow and steady progress towards having a duplex communication channel open between a client and a server, using NetTcpBinding. (FYI, you can observe my newbie progress here and here!) I'm now at the stage where I have successfully connected to my server, through the server's firewall, and the client can make requests of the server. In the other direction, however, things aren't quite so happy. It works fine when testing on my own machine, but when testing over the internet, when I try to initiate a callback from the server side, I get an error: The message with Action 'http://MyWebService/IWebService/HelloWorld' cannot be processed at the receiver, due to a ContractFilter mismatch at the EndpointDispatcher. This may be because of either a contract mismatch (mismatched Actions between sender and receiver) or a binding/security mismatch between the sender and the receiver. Check that sender and receiver have the same contract and the same binding (including security requirements, e.g. Message, Transport, None). Here are some of the key bits of code. First, the web interface: [ServiceContract(Namespace = "http://MyWebService", SessionMode = SessionMode.Required, CallbackContract = typeof(ISiteServiceExternal))] public interface IWebService { [OperationContract] void Register(long customerID); } public interface ISiteServiceExternal { [OperationContract] string HelloWorld(); } Then, on the client side (I was fiddling with these attributes without really knowing what I'm doing): [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.PerSession, Namespace="http://MyWebService")] class SiteServer : IWebServiceCallback { string IWebServiceCallback.HelloWorld() { return "Hello World!"; } ... } So what am I doing wrong here? EDIT: Adding app.config code. From server: <system.serviceModel> <diagnostics> <messageLogging logMalformedMessages="true" logMessagesAtServiceLevel="true" logMessagesAtTransportLevel="true" logEntireMessage="true" maxMessagesToLog="1000" maxSizeOfMessageToLog="524288" /> </diagnostics> <behaviors> <serviceBehaviors> <behavior name="mex"> <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="true"/> <serviceMetadata/> </behavior> </serviceBehaviors> </behaviors> <services> <service name ="MyWebService.WebService" behaviorConfiguration="mex"> <endpoint address="net.tcp://localhost:8000" binding="netTcpBinding" contract="MyWebService.IWebService" bindingConfiguration="TestBinding" name="MyEndPoint"></endpoint> <endpoint address ="mex" binding="mexTcpBinding" name="MEX" contract="IMetadataExchange"/> <host> <baseAddresses> <add baseAddress="net.tcp://localhost:8000"/> </baseAddresses> </host> </service> </services> <bindings> <netTcpBinding> <binding name="TestBinding" maxBufferPoolSize="524288" maxReceivedMessageSize="65536" portSharingEnabled="false"> <readerQuotas maxDepth="32" maxStringContentLength ="8192" maxArrayLength ="16384" maxBytesPerRead="4096" maxNameTableCharCount="16384"/> <security mode="None"/> </binding> </netTcpBinding> </bindings> </system.serviceModel> and on the client side: <system.serviceModel> <bindings> <netTcpBinding> <binding name="MyEndPoint" closeTimeout="00:01:00" openTimeout="00:01:00" receiveTimeout="00:10:00" sendTimeout="00:01:00" transactionFlow="false" transferMode="Buffered" transactionProtocol="OleTransactions" hostNameComparisonMode="StrongWildcard" listenBacklog="10" maxBufferPoolSize="524288" maxBufferSize="65536" maxConnections="10" maxReceivedMessageSize="65536"> <readerQuotas maxDepth="32" maxStringContentLength="8192" maxArrayLength="16384" maxBytesPerRead="4096" maxNameTableCharCount="16384" /> <reliableSession ordered="true" inactivityTimeout="00:10:00" enabled="false" /> <security mode="None"> <transport clientCredentialType="Windows" protectionLevel="EncryptAndSign"> <extendedProtectionPolicy policyEnforcement="Never" /> </transport> <message clientCredentialType="Windows" /> </security> </binding> </netTcpBinding> </bindings> <client> <endpoint address="net.tcp://mydomain.gotdns.com:8000/" binding="netTcpBinding" bindingConfiguration="MyEndPoint" contract="IWebService" name="MyEndPoint" /> </client> </system.serviceModel>

  • Passing a comparator syntax help in Java

    - by Crystal
    I've tried this a couple ways, the first is have a class that implements comparator at the bottom of the following code. When I try to pass the comparat in sortListByLastName, I get a constructor not found error and I am not sure why import java.util.*; public class OrganizeThis implements WhoDoneIt { /** Add a person to the organizer @param p A person object */ public void add(Person p) { staff.put(p.getEmail(), p); //System.out.println("Person " + p + "added"); } /** * Remove a Person from the organizer. * * @param email The email of the person to be removed. */ public void remove(String email) { staff.remove(email); } /** * Remove all contacts from the organizer. * */ public void empty() { staff.clear(); } /** * Find the person stored in the organizer with the email address. * Note, each person will have a unique email address. * * @param email The person email address you are looking for. * */ public Person findByEmail(String email) { Person aPerson = staff.get(email); return aPerson; } /** * Find all persons stored in the organizer with the same last name. * Note, there can be multiple persons with the same last name. * * @param lastName The last name of the persons your are looking for. * */ public Person[] find(String lastName) { ArrayList<Person> names = new ArrayList<Person>(); for (Person s : staff.values()) { if (s.getLastName() == lastName) { names.add(s); } } // Convert ArrayList back to Array Person nameArray[] = new Person[names.size()]; names.toArray(nameArray); return nameArray; } /** * Return all the contact from the orgnizer in * an array sorted by last name. * * @return An array of Person objects. * */ public Person[] getSortedListByLastName() { PersonLastNameComparator comp = new PersonLastNameComparator(); Map<String, Person> sorted = new TreeMap<String, Person>(comp); ArrayList<Person> sortedArrayList = new ArrayList<Person>(); for (Person s: sorted.values()) { sortedArrayList.add(s); } Person sortedArray[] = new Person[sortedArrayList.size()]; sortedArrayList.toArray(sortedArray); return sortedArray; } private Map<String, Person> staff = new HashMap<String, Person>(); public static void main(String[] args) { OrganizeThis testObj = new OrganizeThis(); Person person1 = new Person("J", "W", "111-222-3333", "[email protected]"); Person person2 = new Person("K", "W", "345-678-9999", "[email protected]"); Person person3 = new Person("Phoebe", "Wang", "322-111-3333", "[email protected]"); Person person4 = new Person("Nermal", "Johnson", "322-342-5555", "[email protected]"); Person person5 = new Person("Apple", "Banana", "123-456-1111", "[email protected]"); testObj.add(person1); testObj.add(person2); testObj.add(person3); testObj.add(person4); testObj.add(person5); System.out.println(testObj.findByEmail("[email protected]")); System.out.println("------------" + '\n'); Person a[] = testObj.find("W"); for (Person p : a) System.out.println(p); System.out.println("------------" + '\n'); a = testObj.find("W"); for (Person p : a) System.out.println(p); System.out.println("SORTED" + '\n'); a = testObj.getSortedListByLastName(); for (Person b : a) { System.out.println(b); } System.out.println(testObj.getAuthor()); } } class PersonLastNameComparator implements Comparator<Person> { public int compare(Person a, Person b) { return a.getLastName().compareTo(b.getLastName()); } } And then when I tried doing it by creating an anonymous inner class, I also get a constructor TreeMap cannot find symbol error. Any thoughts? inner class method: public Person[] getSortedListByLastName() { //PersonLastNameComparator comp = new PersonLastNameComparator(); Map<String, Person> sorted = new TreeMap<String, Person>(new Comparator<Person>() { public int compare(Person a, Person b) { return a.getLastName().compareTo(b.getLastName()); } }); ArrayList<Person> sortedArrayList = new ArrayList<Person>(); for (Person s: sorted.values()) { sortedArrayList.add(s); } Person sortedArray[] = new Person[sortedArrayList.size()]; sortedArrayList.toArray(sortedArray); return sortedArray; }

  • Fluent NHibernate/SQL Server 2008 insert query problem

    - by Mark
    Hi all, I'm new to Fluent NHibernate and I'm running into a problem. I have a mapping defined as follows: public PersonMapping() { Id(p => p.Id).GeneratedBy.HiLo("1000"); Map(p => p.FirstName).Not.Nullable().Length(50); Map(p => p.MiddleInitial).Nullable().Length(1); Map(p => p.LastName).Not.Nullable().Length(50); Map(p => p.Suffix).Nullable().Length(3); Map(p => p.SSN).Nullable().Length(11); Map(p => p.BirthDate).Nullable(); Map(p => p.CellPhone).Nullable().Length(12); Map(p => p.HomePhone).Nullable().Length(12); Map(p => p.WorkPhone).Nullable().Length(12); Map(p => p.OtherPhone).Nullable().Length(12); Map(p => p.EmailAddress).Nullable().Length(50); Map(p => p.DriversLicenseNumber).Nullable().Length(50); Component<Address>(p => p.CurrentAddress, m => { m.Map(p => p.Line1, "Line1").Length(50); m.Map(p => p.Line2, "Line2").Length(50); m.Map(p => p.City, "City").Length(50); m.Map(p => p.State, "State").Length(50); m.Map(p => p.Zip, "Zip").Length(2); }); Map(p => p.EyeColor).Nullable().Length(3); Map(p => p.HairColor).Nullable().Length(3); Map(p => p.Gender).Nullable().Length(1); Map(p => p.Height).Nullable(); Map(p => p.Weight).Nullable(); Map(p => p.Race).Nullable().Length(1); Map(p => p.SkinTone).Nullable().Length(3); HasMany(p => p.PriorAddresses).Cascade.All(); } public PreviousAddressMapping() { Table("PriorAddress"); Id(p => p.Id).GeneratedBy.HiLo("1000"); Map(p => p.EndEffectiveDate).Not.Nullable(); Component<Address>(p => p.Address, m => { m.Map(p => p.Line1, "Line1").Length(50); m.Map(p => p.Line2, "Line2").Length(50); m.Map(p => p.City, "City").Length(50); m.Map(p => p.State, "State").Length(50); m.Map(p => p.Zip, "Zip").Length(2); }); } My test is [Test] public void can_correctly_map_Person_with_Addresses() { var myPerson = new Person("Jane", "", "Doe"); var priorAddresses = new[] { new PreviousAddress(ObjectMother.GetAddress1(), DateTime.Parse("05/13/2010")), new PreviousAddress(ObjectMother.GetAddress2(), DateTime.Parse("05/20/2010")) }; new PersistenceSpecification<Person>(Session) .CheckProperty(c => c.FirstName, myPerson.FirstName) .CheckProperty(c => c.LastName, myPerson.LastName) .CheckProperty(c => c.MiddleInitial, myPerson.MiddleInitial) .CheckList(c => c.PriorAddresses, priorAddresses) .VerifyTheMappings(); } GetAddress1() (yeah, horrible name) has Line2 == null The tables seem to be created correctly in sql server 2008, but the test fails with a SQLException "String or binary data would be truncated." When I grab the sql statement in SQL Profiler, I get exec sp_executesql N'INSERT INTO PriorAddress (Line1, Line2, City, State, Zip, EndEffectiveDate, Id) VALUES (@p0, @p1, @p2, @p3, @p4, @p5, @p6)',N'@p0 nvarchar(18),@p1 nvarchar(4000),@p2 nvarchar(10),@p3 nvarchar(2),@p4 nvarchar(5),@p5 datetime,@p6 int',@p0=N'6789 Somewhere Rd.',@p1=NULL,@p2=N'Hot Coffee',@p3=N'MS',@p4=N'09876',@p5='2010-05-13 00:00:00',@p6=1001 Notice the @p1 parameter is being set to nvarchar(4000) and being passed a NULL value. Why is it setting the parameter to nvarchar(4000)? How can I fix it? Thanks!

  • Get the property, as a string, from an Expression<Func<TModel,TProperty>>

    - by Jaxidian
    I use some strongly-typed expressions that get serialized to allow my UI code to have strongly-typed sorting and searching expressions. These are of type Expression<Func<TModel,TProperty>> and are used as such: SortOption.Field = (p => p.FirstName);. I've gotten this working perfectly for this simple case. The code that I'm using for parsing the "FirstName" property out of there is actually reusing some existing functionality in a third-party product that we use and it works great, until we start working with deeply-nested properties(SortOption.Field = (p => p.Address.State.Abbreviation);). This code has some very different assumptions in the need to support deeply-nested properties. As for what this code does, I don't really understand it and rather than changing that code, I figured I should just write from scratch this functionality. However, I don't know of a good way to do this. I suspect we can do something better than doing a ToString() and performing string parsing. So what's a good way to do this to handle the trivial and deeply-nested cases? Requirements: Given the expression p => p.FirstName I need a string of "FirstName". Given the expression p => p.Address.State.Abbreviation I need a string of "Address.State.Abbreviation" While it's not important for an answer to my question, I suspect my serialization/deserialization code could be useful to somebody else who finds this question in the future, so it is below. Again, this code is not important to the question - I just thought it might help somebody. Note that DynamicExpression.ParseLambda comes from the Dynamic LINQ stuff and Property.PropertyToString() is what this question is about. /// <summary> /// This defines a framework to pass, across serialized tiers, sorting logic to be performed. /// </summary> /// <typeparam name="TModel">This is the object type that you are filtering.</typeparam> /// <typeparam name="TProperty">This is the property on the object that you are filtering.</typeparam> [Serializable] public class SortOption<TModel, TProperty> : ISerializable where TModel : class { /// <summary> /// Convenience constructor. /// </summary> /// <param name="property">The property to sort.</param> /// <param name="isAscending">Indicates if the sorting should be ascending or descending</param> /// <param name="priority">Indicates the sorting priority where 0 is a higher priority than 10.</param> public SortOption(Expression<Func<TModel, TProperty>> property, bool isAscending = true, int priority = 0) { Property = property; IsAscending = isAscending; Priority = priority; } /// <summary> /// Default Constructor. /// </summary> public SortOption() : this(null) { } /// <summary> /// This is the field on the object to filter. /// </summary> public Expression<Func<TModel, TProperty>> Property { get; set; } /// <summary> /// This indicates if the sorting should be ascending or descending. /// </summary> public bool IsAscending { get; set; } /// <summary> /// This indicates the sorting priority where 0 is a higher priority than 10. /// </summary> public int Priority { get; set; } #region Implementation of ISerializable /// <summary> /// This is the constructor called when deserializing a SortOption. /// </summary> protected SortOption(SerializationInfo info, StreamingContext context) { IsAscending = info.GetBoolean("IsAscending"); Priority = info.GetInt32("Priority"); // We just persisted this by the PropertyName. So let's rebuild the Lambda Expression from that. Property = DynamicExpression.ParseLambda<TModel, TProperty>(info.GetString("Property"), default(TModel), default(TProperty)); } /// <summary> /// Populates a <see cref="T:System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationInfo"/> with the data needed to serialize the target object. /// </summary> /// <param name="info">The <see cref="T:System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationInfo"/> to populate with data. </param> /// <param name="context">The destination (see <see cref="T:System.Runtime.Serialization.StreamingContext"/>) for this serialization. </param> public void GetObjectData(SerializationInfo info, StreamingContext context) { // Just stick the property name in there. We'll rebuild the expression based on that on the other end. info.AddValue("Property", Property.PropertyToString()); info.AddValue("IsAscending", IsAscending); info.AddValue("Priority", Priority); } #endregion }

  • WCF Authentication on the Internet - HELP

    - by Eddie
    I have a WCF service using the basicHTTP binding. The service will be targeted to be deployed in production in a DMZ environment on a Windows Server 2008 64 bit running IIS 7.0 and is not in an Active Directory domain. The service will be accessed by a business partner over the Internet with SSL protection. Originally, I had built the service to use x.509 Message authentication with wsHTTPBinding and after a lot of problems I punted and decided to back up and use basicHTTP with UserName authentication. Result: same exact, obscure error message as I received with certificate mode. The service works perfectly inside our domain with the exact same authentication but as soon as I move it to the DMZ I get an error reading: "An unsecured or incorrectly secured fault was received from the other party. See the inner FaultException for the fault code and detail". The inner exception message is: "An error occurred when verifying security for the message." The services' web config with binding configuration is as follows: <services> <service behaviorConfiguration="HSSanoviaFacade.Service1Behavior" name="HSSanoviaFacade.HSSanoviaFacade"> <endpoint address="" binding="basicHttpBinding" contract="HSSanoviaFacade.IHSSanoviaFacade" bindingConfiguration="basicHttp"> <identity> <dns value="localhost" /> </identity> </endpoint> <endpoint address="mex" binding="mexHttpsBinding" contract="IMetadataExchange" /> <host> <baseAddresses> <add baseAddress="https://FULLY QUALIFIED HOST NAME CHANGED TO PROTECT/> </baseAddresses> </host> </service> </services> <bindings> <basicHttpBinding> <binding name="basicHttp"> <security mode="TransportWithMessageCredential"> <message clientCredentialType="UserName" /> </security> </binding> </basicHttpBinding> </bindings> <behaviors> <serviceBehaviors> <behavior name="HSSanoviaFacade.Service1Behavior"> <serviceMetadata httpsGetEnabled="True" /> <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="True" /> </behavior> </serviceBehaviors> </behaviors> The test client's configuration that gets the error: <bindings> <basicHttpBinding> <binding name="BasicHttpBinding_IHSSanoviaFacade" closeTimeout="00:01:00" openTimeout="00:01:00" receiveTimeout="00:10:00" sendTimeout="00:01:00" allowCookies="false" bypassProxyOnLocal="false" hostNameComparisonMode="StrongWildcard" maxBufferSize="65536" maxBufferPoolSize="524288" maxReceivedMessageSize="65536" messageEncoding="Text" textEncoding="utf-8" transferMode="Buffered" useDefaultWebProxy="true"> <readerQuotas maxDepth="32" maxStringContentLength="8192" maxArrayLength="16384" maxBytesPerRead="4096" maxNameTableCharCount="16384" /> <security mode="TransportWithMessageCredential"> <transport clientCredentialType="None" proxyCredentialType="None" realm="" /> <message clientCredentialType="UserName" algorithmSuite="Default" /> </security> </binding> </basicHttpBinding> </bindings> <client> <endpoint address="https://HOST NAME CHANGED TO PROTECT" binding="basicHttpBinding" bindingConfiguration="BasicHttpBinding_IHSSanoviaFacade" contract="MembersService.IHSSanoviaFacade" name="BasicHttpBinding_IHSSanoviaFacade" /> </client> As mentioned earlier, the service works perfectly on the domain and the production IIS box is not on a domain. I have been tweaking and pulling my hair out for 2 weeks now and nothing seems to work. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Even a recommendation for a work around for authentication. I'd rather not use a custom authentication scheme but use built-in SOAP capabilities. The credentials pass in thru the proxy i.e. proxy.ClientCredentials.UserName.UserName and proxy.ClientCredentials.UserName.Password are valid accounts on both the internal domain in the test environment and as a machine account on the DMZ IIS box.

  • jQuery getting these functions to work together

    I'm new to jQuery and have tried looking around for an answer on how to do this. I have 2 functions and I would like both to work together. The one function is submitHandler and its used to hide a form and at the same time add a class to a hidden element to unhide it - ie a thank you for submitting h1. The other function is to grab the input data and display it onsubmit in the form. So the problem is that I can get that one to work but then the other doesnt. Ie on form submit I can see the data input but not the h1 Thank you message. Here are the functions: SubmitHandler: submitHandler: function() { $("#content").empty(); $("#content").append( "<p>If you want to be kept in the loop...</p>" + "<p>Or you can contact...</p>" ); $('h1.success_').removeClass('success_').addClass('success_form'); $('#contactform').hide(); }, onsubmit="return inputdata()" function inputdata(){ var usr = document.getElementById('contactname').value; var eml = document.getElementById('email').value; var msg = document.getElementById('message').value; document.getElementById('out').innerHTML = usr + " " + eml + msg; document.getElementById('out').style.display = "block"; return true; }, The form uses PHP and jQuery - I dont know about AJAX but after some reading even less sure. Please help me out I dont know what I'm doing and at the moment I am learning but its a long road for me still. Thank you The form: <form method="post" action="<?php echo $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']; ?>" id="contactform" onsubmit="return inputdata()"> <div class="_required"><p class="label_left">Name*</p><input type="text" size="50" name="contactname" id="contactname" value="" class="required" /></div><br/><br/> <div class="_required"><p class="label_left">E-mail address*</p><input type="text" size="50" name="email" id="email" value="" class="required email" /></div><br/><br/> <p class="label_left">Message</p><textarea rows="5" cols="50" name="message" id="message" class="required"></textarea><br/> <input type="submit" value="submit" name="submit" id="submit" /> </form> The PHP bit: <?php $subject = "Website Contact Form Enquiry"; //If the form is submitted if(isset($_POST['submit'])) { //Check to make sure that the name field is not empty if(trim($_POST['contactname']) == '') { $hasError = true; } else { $name = trim($_POST['contactname']); } //Check to make sure sure that a valid email address is submitted if(trim($_POST['email']) == '') { $hasError = true; } else if (!eregi("^[A-Z0-9._%-]+@[A-Z0-9._%-]+\.[A-Z]{2,4}$", trim($_POST['email']))) { $hasError = true; } else { $email = trim($_POST['email']); } //Check to make sure comments were entered if(trim($_POST['message']) == '') { $hasError = true; } else { if(function_exists('stripslashes')) { $comments = stripslashes(trim($_POST['message'])); } else { $comments = trim($_POST['message']); } } //If there is no error, send the email if(!isset($hasError)) { $emailTo = '[email protected]'; //Put your own email address here $body = "Name: $name \n\nEmail: $email \n\nComments:\n $comments"; $headers = 'From: My Site <'.$emailTo.'>' . "\r\n" . 'Reply-To: ' . $email; mail($emailTo, $subject, $body, $headers); $emailSent = true; } } ? The Jquery Validate bit: $(document).ready(function(){ $('#contactform').validate({ showErrors: function(errorMap, errorList) { //restore the normal look $('#contactform div.xrequired').removeClass('xrequired').addClass('_required'); //stop if everything is ok if (errorList.length == 0) return; //Iterate over the errors for(var i = 0;i < errorList.length; i++) $(errorList[i].element).parent().removeClass('_required').addClass('xrequired'); }, Here is the full jQuery bit: $(document).ready(function(){ $('#contactform').validate({ showErrors: function(errorMap, errorList) { //restore the normal look $('#contactform div.xrequired').removeClass('xrequired').addClass('_required'); //stop if everything is ok if (errorList.length == 0) return; //Iterate over the errors for(var i = 0;i < errorList.length; i++) $(errorList[i].element).parent().removeClass('_required').addClass('xrequired'); }, submitHandler: function() { $('h1.success_').removeClass('success_').addClass('success_form'); $("#content").empty(); $("#content").append('#sadhu'); $('#contactform').hide(); }, }); }); Latest edit - Looks like this: $(document).ready(function(){ $('#contactform').validate({ showErrors: function(errorMap, errorList) { //restore the normal look $('#contactform div.xrequired').removeClass('xrequired').addClass('_required'); //stop if everything is ok if (errorList.length == 0) return; //Iterate over the errors for(var i = 0;i < errorList.length; i++) $(errorList[i].element).parent().removeClass('_required').addClass('xrequired'); }, function submitHandler() { $('h1.success_').removeClass('success_').addClass('success_form'); $("#content").empty(); $("#content").append('#sadhu'); $('#contactform').hide(); }, function inputdata() { var usr = document.getElementById('contactname').value; var eml = document.getElementById('email').value; var msg = document.getElementById('message').value; document.getElementById('out').innerHTML = usr + " " + eml + msg; document.getElementById('out').style.display = "block"; }, $(document).ready(function(){ $('#contactForm').submit(function() { inputdata(); submitHandler(); }); }); });

  • Jquery Serialize data

    - by Richard
    So I have several text boxes, drop down menus, and radio options on this form. When the user clicks submit i want to save ALL that information so I can put it into a database. So this is all the form's inputs <div id="reg2a"> First Name: <br/><input type="text" name="fname" /> <br/> Last Name: <br/><input type="text" name="lname" /> <br/> Address: <br/><input type="text" name="address" /> <br/> City: <br/><input type="text" name="city" /> <br/> State: <br/><input type="text" name="state" /> <br/> Zip Code: <br/><input type="text" name="zip" /> <br/> Phone Number: <br/><input type="text" name="phone" /> <br/> Fax: <br/><input type="text" name="fax" /> <br/> Email: <br/><input type="text" name="email" /> <br/> Ethnicity: <i>Used only for grant reporting purposes</i> <br/><input type="text" name="ethnicity" /> <br/><br/> Instutional Information Type (select the best option) <br/> <select name="iitype"> <option value="none">None</option> <option value="uni">University</option> <option value="commorg">Community Organization</option> </select> <br/><br/> Number of sessions willing to present: <select id="vennum_select" name="vnum"> <?php for($i=0;$i<=3;$i++) { ?> <option value="<?php echo $i ?>"><?php echo $i ?></option> <?php } ?><br/> </select><br/> Number of tables requested: <select id="tabnum_select" name="tnum"> <?php for($i=1;$i<=3;$i++) { ?> <option value="<?php echo $i ?>"><?php echo $i ?></option> <?php } ?> </select><br/><br/> Awarding of a door prize during the conference will result in a reduction in the cost of your first table. <br/><br/> I am providing a door prize for delivery during the conference of $75 or more <select id="prize_select" name="pnum"> <option value="0">No</option> <option value="1">Yes</option> </select><br/> Prize name: <input type="text" name="prize_name" /><br/> Description: <input type="text" name="descr" /><br/> Value: <input type="text" name="retail" /><br/><br/> Name of Institution: <br/><input type="text" name="institution" /> <br/><br/> Type (select the best option) <br/> <select name="type"> <option value="none">None</option> <option value="k5">K-5</option> <option value="k8">K-8</option> <option value="68">6-8</option> <option value="912">9-12</option> </select> <br/><br/> Address: <br/><input type="text" name="address_sch" /> <br/> City: <br/><input type="text" name="city_sch" /> <br/> State: <br/><input type="text" name="state_sch" /> <br/> Zip Code: <br/><input type="text" name="zip_sch" /> <br/> <form name="frm2sub" id="frm2sub" action="page3.php" method="post"> <input type="submit" name="submit" value="Submit" id="submit" /> </form> </div> This is my jquery function: $("#frm2sub").submit( function() { var values = {}; values["fname"] = $("#fname").val(); }); I can do this for each one of the input boxes but I want to give all this data to the next page. So how do I put this array into $_POST? Btw, I've tried doing var data = $("#reg2a").serialize(); and var data = $(document).serialize(); Data ended up being empty. Any ideas? Thanks

  • Does my basic PHP Socket Server need optimization?

    - by Tom
    Like many people, I can do a lot of things with PHP. One problem I do face constantly is that other people can do it much cleaner, much more organized and much more structured. This also results in much faster execution times and much less bugs. I just finished writing a basic PHP Socket Server (the real core), and am asking you if you can tell me what I should do different before I start expanding the core. I'm not asking about improvements such as encrypted data, authentication or multi-threading. I'm more wondering about questions like "should I maybe do it in a more object oriented way (using PHP5)?", or "is the general structure of the way the script works good, or should some things be done different?". Basically, "is this how the core of a socket server should work?" In fact, I think that if I just show you the code here many of you will immediately see room for improvements. Please be so kind to tell me. Thanks! #!/usr/bin/php -q <? // config $timelimit = 180; // amount of seconds the server should run for, 0 = run indefintely $address = $_SERVER['SERVER_ADDR']; // the server's external IP $port = 9000; // the port to listen on $backlog = SOMAXCONN; // the maximum of backlog incoming connections that will be queued for processing // configure custom PHP settings error_reporting(1); // report all errors ini_set('display_errors', 1); // display all errors set_time_limit($timelimit); // timeout after x seconds ob_implicit_flush(); // results in a flush operation after every output call //create master IPv4 based TCP socket if (!($master = socket_create(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, SOL_TCP))) die("Could not create master socket, error: ".socket_strerror(socket_last_error())); // set socket options (local addresses can be reused) if (!socket_set_option($master, SOL_SOCKET, SO_REUSEADDR, 1)) die("Could not set socket options, error: ".socket_strerror(socket_last_error())); // bind to socket server if (!socket_bind($master, $address, $port)) die("Could not bind to socket server, error: ".socket_strerror(socket_last_error())); // start listening if (!socket_listen($master, $backlog)) die("Could not start listening to socket, error: ".socket_strerror(socket_last_error())); //display startup information echo "[".date('Y-m-d H:i:s')."] SERVER CREATED (MAXCONN: ".SOMAXCONN.").\n"; //max connections is a kernel variable and can be adjusted with sysctl echo "[".date('Y-m-d H:i:s')."] Listening on ".$address.":".$port.".\n"; $time = time(); //set startup timestamp // init read sockets array $read_sockets = array($master); // continuously handle incoming socket messages, or close if time limit has been reached while ((!$timelimit) or (time() - $time < $timelimit)) { $changed_sockets = $read_sockets; socket_select($changed_sockets, $write = null, $except = null, null); foreach($changed_sockets as $socket) { if ($socket == $master) { if (($client = socket_accept($master)) < 0) { echo "[".date('Y-m-d H:i:s')."] Socket_accept() failed, error: ".socket_strerror(socket_last_error())."\n"; continue; } else { array_push($read_sockets, $client); echo "[".date('Y-m-d H:i:s')."] Client #".count($read_sockets)." connected (connections: ".count($read_sockets)."/".SOMAXCONN.")\n"; } } else { $data = @socket_read($socket, 1024, PHP_NORMAL_READ); //read a maximum of 1024 bytes until a new line has been sent if ($data === false) { //the client disconnected $index = array_search($socket, $read_sockets); unset($read_sockets[$index]); socket_close($socket); echo "[".date('Y-m-d H:i:s')."] Client #".($index-1)." disconnected (connections: ".count($read_sockets)."/".SOMAXCONN.")\n"; } else { if ($data = trim($data)) { //remove whitespace and continue only if the message is not empty switch ($data) { case "exit": //close connection when exit command is given $index = array_search($socket, $read_sockets); unset($read_sockets[$index]); socket_close($socket); echo "[".date('Y-m-d H:i:s')."] Client #".($index-1)." disconnected (connections: ".count($read_sockets)."/".SOMAXCONN.")\n"; break; default: //for experimental purposes, write the given data back socket_write($socket, "\n you wrote: ".$data); } } } } } } socket_close($master); //close the socket echo "[".date('Y-m-d H:i:s')."] SERVER CLOSED.\n"; ?>
