  • Why differs floating-point precision in C# when separated by parantheses and when separated by state

    - by Andreas Larsen
    I am aware of how floating point precision works in the regular cases, but I stumbled on an odd situation in my C# code. Why aren't result1 and result2 the exact same floating point value here? const float A; // Arbitrary value const float B; // Arbitrary value float result1 = (A*B)*dt; float result2 = (A*B); result2 *= dt; From this page I figured float arithmetic was left-associative and that this means values are evaluated and calculated in a left-to-right manner. The full source code involves XNA's Quaternions. I don't think it's relevant what my constants are and what the VectorHelper.AddPitchRollYaw() does. The test passes just fine if I calculate the delta pitch/roll/yaw angles in the same manner, but as the code is below it does not pass: X Expected: 0.275153548f But was: 0.275153786f [TestFixture] internal class QuaternionPrecisionTest { [Test] public void Test() { JoystickInput input; input.Pitch = 0.312312432f; input.Roll = 0.512312432f; input.Yaw = 0.912312432f; const float dt = 0.017001f; float pitchRate = input.Pitch * PhysicsConstants.MaxPitchRate; float rollRate = input.Roll * PhysicsConstants.MaxRollRate; float yawRate = input.Yaw * PhysicsConstants.MaxYawRate; Quaternion orient1 = Quaternion.Identity; Quaternion orient2 = Quaternion.Identity; for (int i = 0; i < 10000; i++) { float deltaPitch = (input.Pitch * PhysicsConstants.MaxPitchRate) * dt; float deltaRoll = (input.Roll * PhysicsConstants.MaxRollRate) * dt; float deltaYaw = (input.Yaw * PhysicsConstants.MaxYawRate) * dt; // Add deltas of pitch, roll and yaw to the rotation matrix orient1 = VectorHelper.AddPitchRollYaw( orient1, deltaPitch, deltaRoll, deltaYaw); deltaPitch = pitchRate * dt; deltaRoll = rollRate * dt; deltaYaw = yawRate * dt; orient2 = VectorHelper.AddPitchRollYaw( orient2, deltaPitch, deltaRoll, deltaYaw); } Assert.AreEqual(orient1.X, orient2.X, "X"); Assert.AreEqual(orient1.Y, orient2.Y, "Y"); Assert.AreEqual(orient1.Z, orient2.Z, "Z"); Assert.AreEqual(orient1.W, orient2.W, "W"); } } Granted, the error is small and only presents itself after a large number of iterations, but it has caused me some great headackes.

  • C#: Windows Forms: What could cause Invalidate() to not redraw?

    - by Rosarch
    I'm using Windows Forms. For a long time, pictureBox.Invalidate(); worked to make the screen be redrawn. However, it now doesn't work and I'm not sure why. this.worldBox = new System.Windows.Forms.PictureBox(); this.worldBox.BackColor = System.Drawing.SystemColors.Control; this.worldBox.BorderStyle = System.Windows.Forms.BorderStyle.FixedSingle; this.worldBox.Location = new System.Drawing.Point(170, 82); this.worldBox.Name = "worldBox"; this.worldBox.Size = new System.Drawing.Size(261, 250); this.worldBox.TabIndex = 0; this.worldBox.TabStop = false; this.worldBox.MouseMove += new System.Windows.Forms.MouseEventHandler(this.worldBox_MouseMove); this.worldBox.MouseDown += new System.Windows.Forms.MouseEventHandler(this.worldBox_MouseDown); this.worldBox.MouseUp += new System.Windows.Forms.MouseEventHandler(this.worldBox_MouseUp); Called in my code to draw the world appropriately: view.DrawWorldBox(worldBox, canvas, gameEngine.GameObjectManager.Controllers, selectedGameObjects, LevelEditorUtils.PREVIEWS); View.DrawWorldBox: public void DrawWorldBox(PictureBox worldBox, Panel canvas, ICollection<IGameObjectController> controllers, ICollection<IGameObjectController> selectedGameObjects, IDictionary<string, Image> previews) { int left = Math.Abs(worldBox.Location.X); int top = Math.Abs(worldBox.Location.Y); Rectangle screenRect = new Rectangle(left, top, canvas.Width, canvas.Height); IDictionary<float, ICollection<IGameObjectController>> layers = LevelEditorUtils.LayersOfControllers(controllers); IOrderedEnumerable<KeyValuePair<float, ICollection<IGameObjectController>>> sortedLayers = from item in layers orderby item.Key descending select item; using (Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage(worldBox.Image)) { foreach (KeyValuePair<float, ICollection<IGameObjectController>> kv in sortedLayers) { foreach (IGameObjectController controller in kv.Value) { // ... float scale = controller.View.Scale; float width = controller.View.Width; float height = controller.View.Height; Rectangle controllerRect = new Rectangle((int)controller.Model.Position.X, (int)controller.Model.Position.Y, (int)(width * scale), (int)(height * scale)); // cull objects that aren't intersecting with the canvas if (controllerRect.IntersectsWith(screenRect)) { Image img = previews[controller.Model.HumanReadableName]; g.DrawImage(img, controllerRect); } if (selectedGameObjects.Contains(controller)) { selectionRectangles.Add(controllerRect); } } } foreach (Rectangle rect in selectionRectangles) { g.DrawRectangle(drawingPen, rect); } selectionRectangles.Clear(); } worldBox.Invalidate(); } What could I be doing wrong here?

  • Add querystring parameters to link_to

    - by Craig
    I'm having difficultly adding querystring parameters to link_to UrlHelper. I have an Index view, for example, that has UI elements for sorting, filtering, and pagination (via will_paginate). The will_paginate plugin manages the intra-page persistence of querystring parameters correctly. Is there an automatic mechanism to add the querystring parameters to a give named route, or do I need to do so manually? A great deal of research on this seemingly simple construct has left me clueless.

  • WPF ListBox's scrollviewer customizable so that there is no Scrollbar, only RepeatButtons

    - by John
    Hi I would like to customize the scrollbars of a listbox's scrollviewer in such a way that the scrollbar only consists of a RepeatButton for scrolling up and a Repeatbutton for scrolling down. Nothing else. There should be no scrollbar (track) between the buttons. One button should be to the left of the ItemsPanel (scroll up) and the other on the right of the ItemsPanel. Is that possible?

  • Detecting iPhone camera orientation

    - by Stephen Petschulat
    I'm getting inconsistent results depending on whether I get the image directly from the camera in the callback or choosing it from the camera roll. In the UIImagePickerControllerDelegate callback method, the UIImage.imageOrientation comes up as UIImageOrientationRight no matter how the photo is taken. When reading it off the Camera Roll, a landscape shot (turned left) comes up UIImageOrientationUp while a portrait shot comes up UIImageOrientationRight. How can I reliably get the camera orientation in both situations?

  • TreeView Root Node Style

    - by ScG
    I have a tree view <asp:TreeView ID="TreeView1" runat="server" DataSourceID="SiteMapDataSource1" ShowExpandCollapse="False"> </asp:TreeView> As you can see, root node is hidden. However when the treenode gets rendered, there is a whitespace to the left of each leafnode. This is probably because the root node is hidden but is taking up space. How do i remove that white space.

  • Design-time failure: WPF, Usercontrols and Namespaces

    - by Simon Woods
    Hi I have a very simple WPF project comprising a Window and Usercontrol. I'm very much in a learning phase. It works fine when I run it. However, I am unable to see the form in design time. The problem, I believe is something to do with namespaces, but I don't understand where. It may well be a simple error Main Window XML <Window xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" xmlns:views="clr-namespace:UserLogin" x:Class="UserLogin.MainView" x:Name="MainViewWindow" mc:Ignorable="d" Title="Login" Height="141" Width="347" > <Grid> <views:LoginView /> </Grid> </Window> Main Window CodeBehind Imports Microsoft.VisualBasic Imports System Imports System.Windows Imports UserLogin Namespace UserLogin Partial Public Class MainView Inherits System.Windows.Window Public Sub New() InitializeComponent() End Sub End Class End Namespace Usercontrol XAML <UserControl xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" x:Class="UserLogin.LoginView" x:Name="LoginViewControl" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignHeight="96" d:DesignWidth="298"> <Grid Height="96" Width="298"> <Button Command="{Binding OKCommand}" Height="21" Margin="0,0,90,16" Name="btnOK" VerticalAlignment="Bottom" HorizontalAlignment="Right" Width="76">OK</Button> <Button Command="{Binding CancelCommand}" Height="21" HorizontalAlignment="Right" Margin="0,0,9,16" Name="btnCancel" VerticalAlignment="Bottom" Width="75">Cancel</Button> <Label Height="23" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Margin="10,5,0,0" Name="Label1" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="85">Name:</Label> <Label HorizontalAlignment="Left" Margin="10,32,0,0" Name="Label2" Width="85" Height="29" VerticalAlignment="Top">Password:</Label> <TextBox Margin="0,31,6,0" Name="txtPassword" Height="22" VerticalAlignment="Top" HorizontalAlignment="Right" Width="182" /> <ComboBox Height="22" Margin="110,6,6,0" Name="cboNames" VerticalAlignment="Top" /> </Grid> </UserControl> Usercontrol CodeBehind Imports Microsoft.VisualBasic Imports System Imports UserLogin Namespace UserLogin Partial Public Class LoginView Inherits System.Windows.Controls.UserControl Public Sub New() InitializeComponent() End Sub End Class End Namespace I think I'm missing something this namespace xmlns:views="clr-namespace:UserLogin" since intellisense doesn't give me the usercontrol declared within it in the XAML designer but rather reports the error "Unable to load the metadata for the assembly ... etc etc" Thx for any suggestions Simon

  • Using the HTML 'label' tag with radio buttons

    - by GlenPeterson
    Does the label tag work with radio buttons? If so, how do you use it? I have a form that displays like this: First Name: (text field) Hair Color: (color drop-down) Description: (text area) Salutation: (radio buttons for Mr., Mrs., Miss) I'd like to use the label tag for each label in the left column to define its connection to the appropriate control in the right column. But If I use a radio button, the spec seems to indicate that suddenly the actual "Salutation" label for the form control no longer belongs in the label tag, but rather the options "Mr., Mrs., etc." go in the label tag. I've always been a fan of accessibility and the semantic web, but this design doesn't make sense to me. The label tag explicitly declares labels. The option tag selection options. How do you declare a label on the actual label for a set of radio buttons? UPDATE: Here is an example with code: <tr><th><label for"sc">Status:</label></th> <td>&#160;</td> <td><select name="statusCode" id="sc"> <option value="ON_TIME">On Time</option> <option value="LATE">Late</option> </select></td></tr> This works great. But unlike other form controls, radio buttons have a separate field for each value: <tr><th align="right"><label for="???">Activity:</label></th> <td>&#160;</td> <td align="left"><input type="radio" name="es" value="" id="es0" /> Active &#160; <input type="radio" name="es" value="ON_TIME" checked="checked" id="es1" /> Completed on Time &#160; <input type="radio" name="es" value="LATE" id="es2" /> Completed Late &#160; <input type="radio" name="es" value="CANCELED" id="es3" /> Canceled</td> </tr> What to do?

  • Bitwise Operations -- Arithmetic Operations..

    - by RBA
    Hi, Can you please explain the below lines, with some good examples. A left arithmetic shift by n is equivalent to multiplying by 2n (provided the value does not overflow), while a right arithmetic shift by n of a two's complement value is equivalent to dividing by 2n(2 to the power n) and rounding toward negative infinity. If the binary number is treated as ones' complement, then the same right-shift operation results in division by 2n and rounding toward zero. Thankx..

  • Are "EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP)" exceptions caused by debugging breakpoints?

    - by Dennis
    I have a multithreaded app that is very stable on all my test machines and seems to be stable for almost every one of my users (based on no complaints of crashes). The app crashes frequently for one user, though, who was kind enough to send crash reports. All the crash reports (~10 consecutive reports) look essentially identical: Date/Time: 2010-04-06 11:44:56.106 -0700 OS Version: Mac OS X 10.6.3 (10D573) Report Version: 6 Exception Type: EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000 Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread Thread 0 Crashed: Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread 0 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x90ab98d4 __CFBasicHashRehash + 3348 1 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x90adf610 CFBasicHashRemoveValue + 1264 2 com.apple.CoreText 0x94e0069c TCFMutableSet::Intersect(__CFSet const*) const + 126 3 com.apple.CoreText 0x94dfe465 TDescriptorSource::CopyMandatoryMatchableRequest(__CFDictionary const*, __CFSet const*) + 115 4 com.apple.CoreText 0x94dfdda6 TDescriptorSource::CopyDescriptorsForRequest(__CFDictionary const*, __CFSet const*, long (*)(void const*, void const*, void*), void*, unsigned long) const + 40 5 com.apple.CoreText 0x94e00377 TDescriptor::CreateMatchingDescriptors(__CFSet const*, unsigned long) const + 135 6 com.apple.AppKit 0x961f5952 __NSFontFactoryWithName + 904 7 com.apple.AppKit 0x961f54f0 +[NSFont fontWithName:size:] + 39 (....more text follows) First, I spent a long time investigating [NSFont fontWithName:size:]. I figured that maybe the user's fonts were screwed up somehow, so that [NSFont fontWithName:size:] was requesting something non-existent and failing for that reason. I added a bunch of code using [[NSFontManager sharedFontManager] availableFontNamesWithTraits:NSItalicFontMask] to check for font availability in advance. Sadly, these changes didn't fix the problem. I've now noticed that I forgot to remove some debugging breakpoints, including _NSLockError, [NSException raise], and objc_exception_throw. However, the app was definitely built using "Release" as the active build configuration. I assume that using the "Release" configuration prevents setting of any breakpoints--but then again I am not sure exactly how breakpoints work or whether the program needs to be run from within gdb for breakpoints to have any effect. My questions are: could my having left the breakpoints set be the cause of the crashes observed by the user? If so, why would the breakpoints cause a problem only for this one user? If not, has anybody else had similar problems with [NSFont fontWithName:size:]? I will probably just try removing the breakpoints and sending back to the user, but I'm not sure how much currency I have left with that user. And I'd like to understand more generally whether leaving the breakpoints set could possibly cause a problem (when the app is built using "Release" configuration).

  • Why better isolation level means better performance in MS SQL Server

    - by Oleg Zhylin
    When measuring performance on my query I came up with a dependency between isolation level and elapsed time that was surprising to me READUNCOMMITTED - 409024 READCOMMITTED - 368021 REPEATABLEREAD - 358019 SERIALIZABLE - 348019 Left column is table hint, and the right column is elapsed time in microseconds (sys.dm_exec_query_stats.total_elapsed_time). Why better isolation level gives better performance? This is a development machine and no concurrency whatsoever happens. I would expect READUNCOMMITTED to be the fasted due to less locking overhead.

  • Adding Previous/Next Functionality to jQuery Map Highlight Plugin

    - by Keith
    As you can see in my jsFiddle example, I have a diagram that uses jQuery Map Highlight plugin to allow users to click to different parts of the diagram and see the corresponding text to the left. Right now, the only way to interact with the diagram is by clicking on it. I'd like to give users the ability to hit previous and next buttons to control it as well. I'm just not sure how to go about it. Any help would be appreciated: http://jsfiddle.net/keith/jkLH7/1/
