• Apollo linux boot into single user

  We have a device that runs Appolo Linux and I have to boot that device into a single user mode so that i can run a fsck to check the hard drive for errors. I've been goggling this during the past hour and so far I haven't found any specific method on how can I do that on this version on Linux. The device is known formerly as a NFX Cinxi One - now re-branded into BlackStratus LOG Storm. If any of you have any experience with this one you may know it is a device that is used to collect logs from other servers. I know that the above info isn't much but that is everything that I can provide up until now since tomorrow I have to follow up closely on this problem.

• Mac OS X Lion (10.7.3) Virtual Machine?

  I have been looking into this for a while and have attempted quite a few "solutions" (hackintosh boot images, universal unlockers, etc) before I gave in and asked for help. I know this is extremely difficult to accomplish, especially with an AMD CPU, but it has been done and it can't hurt to ask. Question Does anyone know of any way to actually get Mac OS X Lion (10.7.3) to boot in VMware Workstation 8.0.2? I know that Mac OS X is heavily dependant on hardware configuration, so I will post my PC's hardware below, if it helps. As far as I know it's only reliant on the CPU, but I will post it all just in case. • How do you synchronise huge sparse files (VM disk images) between machines?

  Is there a command, such as rsync, which can synchronise huge, sparse, files from one linux server to another? It is very important that the destination file remains sparse. It may be longer (but not bigger) than the drive which contains it. Only changed blocks should be sent across the wire. • How can I retrieve a MS SQL Express Database from a non-booting computer?

  A client has a very important database that has not been backed up in 6 months. The PC has promptly failed. The Windows directory is corrupt, and the computer will not boot. It had a Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 database on it. I have access to the hard drive by booting in with an Ubuntu Live CD, but I am not sure if I can find the database. I am not sure what I am looking for, or where to look either. The dead machine had Windows XP on it.

• bootmgr is missing on Toshiba laptop with Windows 7

  I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 on it. As soon as I turn my computer on it says bootmgr is missing The only thing I can get into is the setup menu. Does anyone know what might be wrong? My step brother thinks that it might be that everything was erased off my hard drive. The last thing he did when he used it was to perform the Toshiba updates and restart the computer. If anyone knows what might be wrong or how I could get my computer up and running please let me know.

• Window will read this particular DVD which it usually doesn't, if it spins for a longer time

  I'm unable to figure out what's wrong with my system. My computer will read this particular DVD sometimes and mostly it won't. When trying to explore the DVD, I get error "Windows can't access this disc" ( note : It doesn't says that the "disc is empty", the normal error which I generally get when I try to read a scratched DVD ). Ok now the mysterious part, I have noticed that everytime DVD spins for a longer time ( like for 1 -2 minutes), window will read it without any problem. Extra information : The DVD I'm talking about doesn't have any scratches. I tried cleaning the DVD Drive with a lens cleaning CD. DVD was burned in multisessions. My system have window 8 installed. Question I wanted to ask : What makes DVD spins for a longer period of time sometimes ? If possible how can I make window spin the DVD for longer time ? Any solution to my problem ?

• Can't burn 8.1G iso onto 8.4GB DVD - "Media does not have enough free space"

  I'm trying to burn a dvd on a mac with an external (firewire-connected) dvd drive. I'm checking the size of the iso thus: DVD-4:dvd_files macbook$ ls -l /tmp/hybrid.iso -rw-r--r-- 1 macbook wheel 8700884992 Aug 22 10:57 /tmp/hybrid.iso DVD-4:dvd_files macbook$ ls -lh /tmp/hybrid.iso -rw-r--r-- 1 macbook wheel 8.1G Aug 22 10:57 /tmp/hybrid.iso The "human-readable" size is 8.1 Gig but when i try to burn, onto an 8.4G dual-layer dvd, it says "Media does not have enough free space" The definition of a "Gigabyte" according to Wikipedia is 1 billion bytes, so the iso size should actually be 8.7 Gig according to this definition, in which case the disk definitely isn't big enough, and it's just that the -h option to ls is misleading. Is the discrepancy just due to the ls command using a different definition of "G" (eg 1024 Meg aka 1.07 Gig? This comes out as 8.103 which fits what ls is displaying)

• Windows Server 2003 stops sharing a folder when the server reboots [closed]

  I have a file server that will stop sharing a particular folder once the server is rebooted. This problem happened after the server went through a p2v migration. There are no events that seem to correlate to this issue. I was reading http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/870964 but I don't think this applies and there are other shares on the same drive that are still there after a reboot. To be clear about the issue; When the server reboots share x is no longer shared any more but share y and z are still there. This has nothing to do with users not being able to see the share. On the server its self the folder that was shared is no longer shared. I wish I had more information to post but after hours on this issue I can't find a way to move forward.

  I'm going to be rebuilding my server, and I want much faster access to my data. I've used RAID 1 and 0 in the past, and decided upon RAID 10 (dedicated RAID card). Then someone told me to use RAID 5+0, then someone else told me to use RAID 6+0. Assuming the Hardware RAID Card supports each level, what is currently the FASTEST RAID available, given x number of hard drives? Reliability is now another factor, and I am willing to spend money on new drives if a drive (or multiple) fail. • Migrate to SSD - NTFS mount point for Program Files

  Here is my thought. I have a new computer that I just built and am considering migrating to a SSD. I have Windows all setup and my Development environment configured so I want to avoid having to re-install a bunch of stuff. My thought is to clone my OS (win7) to the SSD and then mount a HDD partion to C:\Program Files (x86)\ with C being my SSD. This way as far as the programs are concerned they still live on the C drive but in reality they are physically located on the HDD. This seems to me like a good idea but after searching around a bit and not having found anyone else that had the same idea, I'm wondering why not. Maybe I am missing something that is obvious to everyone but me. Why is this a good or a bad idea?

• Change Apache DocumentDirectory path in trueCrypt partition

  Hello, I'm recently moving from windows to linux, so I've setup my machine to dual boot Windows7 and Ubuntu 10.04. I was able to successfully setup Apache on the Ubuntu partition, but I need to move the DocumentRoot since my websites are on a TrueCrypt partition that is in another hard drive so I can have them accessible in both OS. I followed some guides on how to change the path for the DocumentRoot so I end up modifiying the default file at /etc/apache2/sites-available DocumentRoot /media/truecrypt1/www <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory /media/truecrypt1/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> Those are the lines that I've changed, but now when I go to localhost I always get the Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. • Cannot umount device is busy

  Situation I am running a RHEL server via a VM on my laptop. I have a win7 desktop sharing out a folder and the VM on my laptop running RHEL6 has a CIFS windows mount at \mnt\win When I go to unmount the device I get a device is busy message. So I went to my laptop and check to see if there were any users connected to the share, since it listed none I turned off sharing. I went back to my RHEL instance and attempted another umount \mnt\win but received the same error. Question What are other alternatives to unmounting a shared drive?

• Advice on off-site backup of Hyper-V Failover Cluster

  We are currently setting up a Server 2008 R2 which will be off-site over a leased line with VPN. At the main site is 2 x Hyper-V hosts in a failover cluster with PowerVault M3000i iSCSI SAN. We are using BackupAssist for local backups and each host backups up itself and it's guests nightly creating a 500GB backup each which is copied to a 2TB rotated NAS drive. Files and SQL DB's are also backed up / log shipped etc. Looking for the best way to backup the Hyper-V VM's and copy them off-site so that the OS's are only a month old and the data is a day old. The main backups are too large to transfer between backups so options discussed so far are: Take rotating individual backups of the VM's each day and copy over, Day 1 SQL VM, Day 2 Exchange VM etc, would require more storage. Look in to Hyper-V snapshots, however don't believe these are supported in clustering. 3rd party replication tools

• Grub hangs intermittently on "Starting Up..."

  Hi all, I've had this problem for a while now. My linux server is set to wake-on-lan but occasionally it halts at Grubs "Starting Up..." and goes no further. This is not due to additional hardware being attached such as a flash drive or anything as I never plug anything into it. It may boot perfectly 40 times in a row and then hit this issue. Sometimes it gets the issue a couple of times in quick succession and doesn't happen for ages again. I'm not sure how to diagnose it since it doesn't seem to be reproducible. • TrueCrypt with blank password

  This might sound like an odd question, but please hear me out. I want to setup my laptop to use TrueCrypt, but without a password. My wife doesn't travel much with her notebook. There are occasions where we will have to travel and bring the notebook with us. This is when we would like the have the encryption. The time it takes to to change the unlock pass-phrase is considerably less than it takes to encrypt the drive. My thoughts are to leave the disk encrypted but with no password. Then when it's time to pack for a trip and bring the laptop, we would then change the pass-phrase and create a rescue disk.

• MySQL gzipped Export in PhpMyAdmin has wrong size in Mozilla

  That is really strange. I am using PhpMyAdmin 2.11.9.6 on Linux hosting. While I am Exporting databases using "gzipped" compression in Mozilla, I am getting files which have size of uncompressed database, but they seems to be downloading in incredible speed (10 times quicker than is possible using my ISP). So at the end: for database of 10M size I am getting 10M gzip downloaded in miniseconds it has indeed shown 10M size on drive it is corrupted Zip compression is working just fine (I am getting file with cca 1M size with fine content of compressed database) And the weirdest thing: that is happening for Mozilla Firefox (13.0.1) only, Internet Explorer 9 is downloading correct gzipped files... Any hint?

• How to uninstall AMD Display Driver from other install of Windows

  So my Windows 7 had a BSOD from an Ati driver file then restarting only gives me some wierd coloured lines at the top of the screen. Starting in safe mode causes the boot up to freeze at AtiPcie.sys and overlays the same coloured lines on the safe mode start up display. It seems to be a problem with the display driver but I can't get into the OS at all to uninstall it. Luckily I have an old install of Windows 7 from when I moved to a SSD still on my HDD and that runs just fine so I'm pretty sure its a software problem (Maybe the SSD corrupted a driver file or something). So does anyone know how I can uninstall the driver files from another Windows 7 install on the same PC? EDIT: What I mean is, I'm running on the broken PC right now but using a different HDD's windows install. I have full access to the not booting up OS drive with the Windows so I can delete any files/load the registry etc...

• Any programs for getting rid of .DS_Store files? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to prevent Mac OS X creating .DS_Store files on non Mac (HFS) Volumes? I dual boot between Mac and Windows. When I browse my Windows partition with Finder, it drops little .DS_Store turds all over the folders. They show up when I boot back into Windows. Right now I've got one on my Desktop, sigh. Are there any (free) programs I can use to stop this from happening? I know, I know, there's a Finder setting to stop dropping .DS_Store files on network drives, but my local Windows partition is NOT a network drive.

• Small footprint on a Laptop

  I am trying to find a solution where I can do the following: 1) Run a small footprint on my laptop 2) Run virtual instances of OS w/ no primary OS installed. All the OS that I will ever use will be all virtualized. I tried playing around with the VMware Esxi, and got it to boot it from the flash drive, etc. But this just runs the server. I cannot actually run my virtual instances from there. Anyone has done this? Something similar implemented with VMWare products without needing 2 computers will be great. Thanks, -Subhash

• Ubuntu, connecting to WEP

  Hello, I successfully installed Ubuntu onto my usb hard drive. However, I'm not sure what the issue is with my internet. I'm not familiar enough with ubuntu to know whether this is a problem with recognizing my wireless card or with my internet, etc. So I suppose my question is, how do I tell whether it's recognizing my wireless card? (Network manager isn't showing any wireless signals, though I wasn't sure if it was supposed to. ) And, if it's not working, how do I go about troubleshooting that issue? Thanks!

• How to allow simple file sharing on Windows Server 2008R2 through VPN

  We are a small, distributed company with a Windows Server 2008R2 installation. I would like to set up a way for our employees to connect securely to this server via VPN and then be able to map a network drive. I have gotten this to work somewhat by installing the Network Policy and Access Services Role on the server and using the default settings. I have also created a network share on the server. The problem is that our connectivity is sporadic (sometimes the service stops listening on the port or simply refuses to authorize correct credentials) and slow. I can always connect through VPN, but mapping is problematic. I would be grateful for the answer on how to accomplish this as well as some guidance on whether I am on the right track. • Windows Server 2008 R2 and OSX 10.5/.6/.7

  I'm handling a migration from a on old mac server to a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine running a 12TB(10 usable) RAID5 server. It's using an SMB share and now the OSX 10.5/.6 users can search sometimes it works but takes up to 10 minutes. The OSX 10.7 machine seems to be fine. I've looked in the root of the shared drive for a .Spotlight-V100 file (ls -a) but it doesn't seem to be there. mdutil says indexing is on for that volume and I have cleared the index using mdutil -E /Volumes/MeSharedVolume numerous times. Any ideas?
