• How does storage spaces decide where to put my files?

  With Windows 8 Storage Spaces, you can lump many hard disks of varying types, speeds and sizes together to use as a single storage space / logical drive. How does Windows decide what to place where? For example will it move files about depending on frequency of access? Maybe splitting files frequently accessed together between hard disks etc. What does it optimize for? Speed, reliability, etc? If the above is asking too much, can I easily see where the files are physically (on which physical disk)?

• Do I have to reinstall Mac OS in case something goes wrong during a Windows Boot Camp install?

  I have a Macbook laptop running Snow Leopard, there's absolutely no information on the laptop, just a few unimportant files on it, I wanted to use Boot Camp Assistant (version 3) to create a partition and install Windows on it to run Windows alongside Mac OS. My CD/DVD drive doesn't work at all so I'm gonna have to mount Windows on a USB stick and install it from there. My question is, when I start Boot Camp it asks me to back up my files but I have nothing to back up, I was just wondering, in case I go through with the Windows install and something goes wrong do I have to reinstall Snow Leopard? My Snow Leopard install DVD can't be read by the laptop that's why I ask, I wouldn't know what to do if I had to reinstall it.

  I have a Windows 7 amd64 box where one directory is shared: local path is d:\drop\ remote path is \\aloism\drop from SMB point of view, Everyone has Read and Write permission ACLs for the folder are set so that all authenticated users have read and write permissions:NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users:(OI)(CI)C (which is inherited to all levels below) Now I create a symbolic link within the structure of the directory: D:\drop>mklink /d tools2 tools symbolic link created for tools2 <<===>> tools The problem is that I can't access this new directory from any of the remote machines (a Windows 7 box and a Windows XP box—both behave the same way): C:\>dir \\aloism\drop\tools2\ Volume in drive \\aloism\drop is droot Volume Serial Number is FA73-1897 Directory of \\aloism\drop\tools2 File Not Found How can I make it work? Possibly also for files?

• windows 8 stops working after gparted

  My laptop (windows 8.1) has a big partition so i would like to spit it into two smaller partitions. I tried hirens boot and jumped into gparted (something i have never used before) I resized windows partition (c:) and created a new partition, reboot, and my laptop cant boot I am seeing in gparted - sda1 ntfs recovery 300MB - sda2 fat32 100MB - sda3 unknown 128MB msftres - sda4 is my original C partition - sda5 is the new partition I tried with Windows 8 DVD there are options to automatically fix but it did not work. I also tried with make PC fresh or something like that and windows told me it cant fix because the drive is locked. Any help would be greatly appreciate. I stop playing with the tool now. • Why won't AVI2DVD load the audio stream?

  XP SP3 I have an .avi file. It is in a folder on my "C:" drive. There are no disallowed characters in either the folder or file name. It has audio as I have watched it on my computer. I want to burn it to a DVD. When I load the file into AVI2DVD, no audio stream shows, and the program will not work without an audio stream. I have used the net extensively to try and solve this, with no success. AFICT I have followed all instructions exactly, but no audio stream. Very frustrating. Does anyone have a clue? • How do I run perfmon against a remote machine?

  For starters I'm trying to do this from a Windows 7 box to a Windows 7 box. I know the simple answer should be to enter \\computername where it says "Select Counters From Computer". Trouble is, every time I do that I get an error message that says "Unable to connect to machine" I know the machine is out there and accessible, because I can bring up windows explorer and enter \\computername\c$ in the explorer bar and then can browse their c drive. So the machine is out there. Are there special permissions for perfmon? Is here a service which needs to be running on the remote machine?

• Cannot connect Solaris 10 to Windows 7

  I'm trying to connect a Solaris VM (powered by VMware Player) to Windows Explorer in Windows 7. When I try to map the network drive I get the following: The specified server cannot perform the requested operation. I am using the following URL which has worked on a machine I used before. The only thing that has changed is the IP address of the Solaris machine. I am able to connect to the VM via putty. \\1.2.3.4\xxx\yyy I checked and I think samba is running.. root 375 1 0 09:53:39 ? 0:00 /usr/sfw/sbin/smbd -D root 376 375 0 09:53:40 ? 0:00 /usr/sfw/sbin/smbd –D Anyone any ideas?

• PCI IDE Controller

  I have a suspicion that the onboard IDE controllers may not be working. Every disk I use to setup this machine reports as damaged (using a win xp installation to test, since it gets to partition setup fastest) So, I popped an IDE PCI Controller card in, to test with, but no drives are showing up in the bios now. I went into setup and changed the BIOS settings to disable onboard IDE1 and 2 to test, but still didn't detect the drives. How do I get that working? It's a standard PC with a 160GB disk and DVD Drive on master and slave channels on a single cable, if that helps. Let me know what else I need to state.

• Why does moving large folders take a lot of time?

  What can i do to fix this? Drop permission properties? I have a large folder with 100k files. I moved it into my archive folder and its taking forever to move. Why is that? I know on XP it takes <1sec but not on windows 7. I am sure its a permission thing, is there a way i can disable it and make it faster? -edit- I am moving the folder into another in the same drive/partition. In XP. AFAIK it just moves the folder file from one place to another. In windows 7, it seems like its touching something in every file when i move it.

• Gigabit connection between 2 computers

  I am trying to set up a connection between 2 pc's. It's a direct cable connection. The problem that I am having is that the connection isn't gigabit. I know both network cards support gigabit. I checked in the device settings and in one pc I can see in the Speed & Duplex the 1Gbps option but on the other pc I can't see that option despite the fact that the network card is gigabit. I have quite some files to copy from one pc onto another and I really need a good connection between them. I can't really remove the hard drive because it would void the warranty. Could this be a driver issue or a cable issue? On both pc's I have windows 8. The network card on the pc that doesn't have the 1 gbps option is an Atheros ar8161 card.

• Debian Based Server not booting, soon after GRUB screen it restarts?

  I have tried running memtest, it start get about half way then abruptly restarts. I assume this is not a problem with the OS itself but rather a hardware issue, I have checked various logs when after about 10 reboots it starts ok, /var/log/kern.log /var/log/syslog /var/log/dmesg All I get is: EXT4-fs(sdc1): re-mounted. Opts: errors=remount-ro restart So I ran fcsk on the drive, to check if the fs was failing and it was fine. Really don't know how to find why the server is continuosly restarting andif I get lucky it will boot up.

  Hi all, I'm going to use the free (non gui) version of Hyper-V R2. In my new server I have 8 disks in total (for Hyper-V R2 installation and virtual machine). Atm I'm going to run a single virtual machine, with following tasks: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 File/Print SQL Server My question is ... with my 8 disks in the server, which disks should contain wich data? Should I install "Hyper-V R2" and VM's drive c on same physical disks? Should I use raid 1 or 5? With the above tasks, how would you structure the disks?   Buying a laptop is always hard work and questions about specific models dont age well on forums. A popular dilema (especially with apple macbooks) is whether to spend more for a faster cpu and graphics card but settle for standard ram and hd OR drop down and spend the savings on more ram and a faster harddrive such as a ssd. Im wondering for web development i.e. ide, unit tests, photoshop work and some user testing screen capturing now and again what would provide better performance. ( No games, music production or spielberg standard video editing.) For examples sake the current apple lineup for their 15inch macbookpros. 2.66 cpu i7 4gb ram 5400rpm drive 4gig ram vs 2.4 cpu i5 8gb ram 124gb sdd roughly the same price.

• Windows 7 File Transfer Speed over Gigabit is slow

  I've got windows 7 pro running on my file server and my main desktop. Each has a gigabit network connection and I'm connected to a gigabit switch. However, when trying to copy some large files, it's running pretty slow at a measly 12-15 MB/s The data is coming from a 7200RPM SATA drive (which I think should be good for almost 150MB/s) and going to a Drobo on the server connected via FireWire 800, so I can't think of any bottlenecks I might have in the hardware. But TeraCopy still says it's only going at 12-15 MB/s What else could be wrong here?

• RAID 1 in ubuntu 12.04

  Right now I have a small file server to which I have loaded ubuntu 12.04 desktop on a small 160gb harddrive. This harddrive is the primary drive from which the OS boots. I want to move all my data to my file server so it can be shared on the network (contain in 2x2TB harddrives in my desktop. The 2TB drivers are in raid 1 (hardware). I simply want to move them to the file server and set it up so that they are in software raid 1. If at all possible I'd like to be able to do this without losing any info on the drives. I've searched around and the guides i find describe raiding drives for boot driver, but these wouldn't be boot drives just regular storage drives. If someone could tell me how to perform this or point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

In scheduler I run it every 5 minutes. robocopy.exe Z:\ C:\destination /E I've tried to put it to .bat file, tried to write in scheduler, it doesn't help. I've set run with highest privilegies... Task Scheduler successfully completed task "\RoboCopy" , instance "{dd2d2d1c-4ef1-4e30-b226-4a77aa52dab9}" , action "C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\cmd.exe" with return code 16.

• Windows 7 Hibernate Problem

  I cannot hibernate windows. When I click "hibernate", my laptop(windows) just locks and the screen goes black. I can unlock without any problem. I do not have any problem with other options such as "sleep" or "shut down". I updated the chipset drivers but it did not help. There is not any option in BIOS about the sleep modes. "Hibernate" is "on" on Windows. Any advice? My Laptop specifications: MSI A5000 3gb system memory, Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit installed, Gentoo linux installed, Grub bootloader(MBR). Hard drive: Around 4gb of free space in windows partition.

  I need to reinstall Windows on a laptop. I have the product key (its on the laptop), and I know it is Windows 7 Home Premium. I need a way to determine if 64-bit or 32-bit Windows is installed, so that I can download the correct one from Microsoft. The computer is messed up so I do not have access to Windows to check it with systeminfo. I took out the hard drive and hooked it to another computer, but when I run systeminfo it just gives information for the host computer, I did not see a way to change this.

  I want to run fsck on a disk image before I use it to restore (replace) a corrupted volume. Using Terminal, what would be the proper command, syntax, and options for this operation? I've just recently become acquainted with Terminal and line commands, so syntax and specific options aren't part of my computing vocabulary. I'm using Terminal 2.1.2, bash, OS 10.6.8. • How do I define multiple urls for svn project?

  I am working on a project in mixed environment (win, cygwin, linux) which is on a "shared ntfs drive". I am the sole user there for this project is not really duplicated for multiple users. The main issue I am facing is that the original svn project import was done with a cygwin path like "/cygdrive/z/path to svn project". Now when I am on win svn or linux svn this does not work with svn since such paths do not exists for those versions. Is there a way to define more than one path for the svn import, like maybe some kind of configuration that i can use to fire on the command line? thanks

  I own an HP G-62 laptop. My Windows 7 OS is on the Recovery partition, D. I have no Win 7 Disks. I am wanting to perform a non destructive repair of the system files without losing my data or having to go through the whole routine of reinstalling Windows, Programs, Files, Pics, Music, etc... • How to prevent Windows 8 of erasing GRUB?

  I'm doing dualboot with Ubuntu and Windows 8 on my DELL Laptop. EFI is enabled, secure boot is not. My partitions are GPT. Everything seems to work for some time. After some normal use, GRUB stops working. The "ubuntu" EFI entry is still there on top of everything else. But the computer boots directly into the Windows Bootloader, skipping GRUB. Any clues on why is that happening or how can I prevent that? My current partiton setup is: - /dev/sda1 NTFS Windows recovery - /dev/sda2 FAT32 UEFI boot (with boot flag) - /dev/sda3 unknown (msftres flag) - /dev/sda4 NTFS Windows Drive C - /dev/sda5 ext4 /home - /dev/sda6 ext4 / I usually reinstall GRUB through chrooting from a Live Session and doing a apt-get install --reinstall grub-efi-amd64.

• phpmyadmin error #2002 cannot connect to mysql server

  I am getting the error in the title when trying to connect to my MySQL server. I have reinstalled MySQL and PHP several times and tried a slew of command line work based on information I searched out. web.mysql is running and I know that my mysql.sock exists and is located in ~/private/tmp/ and also in ~/tmp/. I also have plenty of hard drive space. I have installed and setup phpMyAdmin correctly only adding a password to 'Password for config auth'. I have also connected to the server via Sequel Pro. Why can't I connect to the server via phpMyAdmin? I'm on a 64-bit Intel Mac running Snow Leopard

• What if any free video player for windows can I set a custom frame buffer for streaming over the wifi?

  I currently use DAUM PLayer (Pot Player) but I have problems streaming video to my laptop unless it is plugged into the network. An easy fix (so I thought) would be to find a player were I could adjust the cache / buffer so say 5 mins+ is read to the local Hdrive and then played from there... I can not work out how to do this in any player I have VLC, MPCHC and DAUM installed. All I want to do is increase the file buffer so X amount of the networkfile is copied to the local drive and then played... so all stuttering is stopped? How do I do this?

• mirror sql server 2008 to AWS instance from our datacenter?

  We are currenlty running on hosted pos system locally and would like to mirror to AWS. We are new to AWS and would like to know the most cost effective way to do this? We have 2 DB and 2 web servers right now in one cabinet in CA. One tape drive, one firewall, one SNA. We are thinking to replicate our system in AWS (using sql server 2008) and just mirror both systems and use a witness server between them to keep the data in sync? The goal is, if CA datacenter goes down, AWS keeps running. User see no downtime. All data is synced. Is anyone doing something similar? Would this be practical to just use AWS in this fashion?
