• WP7 &ndash; Oh, You Wanted to Develop On Your New Phone? That&rsquo;ll Cost Ya!

  Had an interesting Twitter convo today about WP7 development. Question was raised on how to use a WP7 device as the deployment target from within VS.NET. Thinking that this would be an *obvious* question, I replied that you need to set the right value in one of the drop lists in the IDE… I did this, hooked up my device, then tried to run my app, just as a final test that it was as easy as I thought it would be. It wasn’t. So first, your phone can’t be locked, so make sure you unlock it. Also, don’t kill the Zune software when you notice it automagically started – its needed for VS.NET to deploy to your device. Finally, you need to register your device for development. Aiden Caine has a great article on what you need to do for this, but in a nutshell you need to launch the Windows Phone Developer Registration program found in the Windows Phone Developer Tools folder. Now, here’s the catch to all of this: You must have a Windows Phone AppHub account. As in paid account. That’s right – to do development on your actual device, you need to have a $99 ($120 in Canada) AppHub developer membership. Now, I get this – if Microsoft didn’t put this restriction, then they’d be back in Mobile 6.x land where anyone could install whatever app to whoever, whenever, and without any standards being upheld. This is the same thing that Apple does with their marketplace, its not something unprecedented. But, it is something that will be new to the majority of Microsoft developers that have lived without application restrictions for years. • Compare those hard-to-reach servers with SQL Snapper

  If you’ve got an environment which is at the end of an unreliable or slow network connection, or isn’t connected to your network at all, and you want to do a deployment to that environment – then pointing SQL Compare at it directly is difficult or impossible. While you could run SQL Compare locally on that environment, if it’s a server – especially if it’s a locked-down server – you probably don’t want to go through the hassle of using another activation on it. Or possibly you’re not allowed to install software at all, because you don’t have admin rights – but you can run user-mode software. SQL Snapper is a standalone, licensing-free program which takes SQL Compare snapshots of a database. It can create a snapshot within the context of that environment which can then be moved to your working environment to run SQL Compare against, allowing you to create a deployment script for environments you can’t get SQL Compare into. Where can I find it? You can find RedGate.SQLSnapper.exe in your SQL Compare installation directory – if you haven’t changed it, that will be something like C:\Program Files (x86)\Red Gate\SQL Compare 10 (or 11 if you’re using our SQL Server 2014 support beta). As well as copying the executable, you’ll also currently need to copy the System.Threading.dll and RedGate.SOCCompareInterface.dll files from the same directory alongside it. How do I use it? SQL Snapper’s UI is just a cut-down version of the snapshot creation UI in SQL Compare – just fill in the boxes and create your snapshot, then bring it back to the place you use SQL Compare to compare against your difficult-to-reach environment. SQL Snapper also has a command-line mode if you can’t run the UI in your target environment – just specify the server, database and output location with the /server, /database and /mksnap arguments, and optionally the username and password if you’re using SQL security, e.g.: RedGate.SQLSnapper.exe /database:yourdatabase /server:yourservername /username:youruser /password:yourpassword /mksnap:filename.snp What’s the catch? There are a few limitations of SQL Snapper in its current form – notably, it can’t read encrypted objects, and you’ll also currently need to copy the System.Threading.dll and RedGate.SOCCompareInterface.dll files alongside it, which we recognise is a little awkward in some environments. • Filling in PDF Forms with ASP.NET and iTextSharp

  The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a popular file format for documents. PDF files are a popular document format for two primary reasons: first, because the PDF standard is an open standard, there are many vendors that provide PDF readers across virtually all operating systems, and many proprietary programs, such as Microsoft Word, include a "Save as PDF" option. Consequently, PDFs server as a sort of common currency of exchange. A person writing a document using Microsoft Word for Windows can save the document as a PDF, which can then be read by others whether or not they are using Windows and whether or not they have Microsoft Word installed. Second, PDF files are self-contained. Each PDF file includes its complete text, fonts, images, input fields, and other content. This means that even complicated documents with many images, an intricate layout, and with user interface elements like textboxes and checkboxes can be encapsulated in a single PDF file. Due to their ubiquity and layout capabilities, it's not uncommon for a websites to use PDF technology. For example, when purchasing goods at an online store you may be offered the ability to download an invoice as a PDF file. PDFs also support form fields, which are user interface elements like textboxes, checkboxes, comboboxes, and the like. These form fields can be entered by a user viewing the PDF or, with a bit of code, they can be entered programmatically.   As you might know, I lived and worked on LI, NY for 11 years before relocating to South Florida. As I will be visiting my family who still live there in the first week of June, I couldn't resist reaching out to Dan Galvez, LI  .Net User Group Leader, and asking if he needed a speaker for June's meeting. Apparently the stars were lined up right and I am now scheduled to speak at my "home" group on June 3rd, which I am pretty excited about. Here is a brief abstract of my talk and speaker bio. What's New in MVC2 We will start by briefly reviewing the basics of the Microsoft MVC Framework. Next, we will look at the new features introduced in the latest and greatest MVC2. Many new enhancements were introduced to both the MS MVC Framework and to VS2010 to improve developers' experience and reduce development time. We will be talking about new MVC2 features such as: Model Validation, Areas and Template Helpers. We will also discuss the new built-in MVC project templates that ship with VS2010. • Some SharePoint NDA Information

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Many years ago, at the last to last to last MVP summit, Microsoft was kind enough to share with us what they were thinking wayyyyyyyyyyyy ahead! I specially remember John Durant talking about the specific enhancements planned for SharePoint 2010 development experience. If you haven’t seen John Durant talking on stage, the guy has more enthusiasm than tiger woods in Amsterdam! The energy of his presentations is simply amazing. So, I pulled out my phone, and I snapped a picture! And, I emailed that picture to everyone in the MVP land, and Microsoft land, saying “We have evidence”, i.e. here are the promises that were made, and dammit we’ll see by the time you release SP2010 how many of these do you actually release. Here is the picture ladies and gentlemen -     It’s a good karate chop action shot isn’t it? Of course, we were all immediately warned not to share any of this seriously strictly NDA information at the time. Well, now that the information is out in the world, I can finally share now, this small tidbit of how far ahead Microsoft is thinking in their plans. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised, if today that they have a very clear idea what SharePoint vNext will be all about, or should I say vNextvNext? Have fun! Comment on the article ....

  Screenshot I created this small app as a weekend hack. It shows the reputations, upvotes, downvotes and accepted answers for a user against the tags for the answers. About I wanted to know how may upvotes I was away from getting the bronze badge for the clojure tag. But I could not find any straightforward way of doing that. So I wrote this app (in Clojure, of course). The SO API is used for the data and the charts are created using the Google Chart API. The charts are opened in the default browser. License Licensed under EPL 1.0. Download If you have Clojure and Leiningen installed, you can simply get the code from https://gist.github.com/725331, save it as socharts.clj and then run lein repl -e "(load \"socharts\")(refer 'socharts.socharts)(-main)" for launching the Swing UI If you don't have Clojure installed, but have Java then download the standalone jar from http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5247/socharts-1.0.0-standalone.jar and run it as javaw -jar socharts-1.0.0-standalone.jar Once the UI is launched, just type your user id in the input box and press <ENTER>. It will take some time to download the data from the SO API (the progress bar shows the download progress) and then it will open the charts in your default browser. You can also run it as a command line app by running lein repl -e "(load \"socharts\")(refer 'socharts.socharts)(-main <userid>)" or java -jar socharts-1.0.0-standalone.jar <userid> where you replace <userid> with your user id. Be warned that because of a missing feature in the SO API, it will fetch the data for each question you have answered. So the maximum limit is 10000 answers (the SO API call limit). • A dacpac limitation – Deploy dacpac wizard does not understand SqlCmd variables

  Since the release of SQL Server 2012 I have become a big fan of using dacpacs for deploying SQL Server databases (for reasons that I will explain some other day) and I chose to use a dacpac to distribute my recently announced utility sp_ssiscatalog (read: Introducing sp_ssiscatalog (v1.0.0.0)). Unfortunately if you read that blog post you may have taken note of the following: Ordinarily a dacpac can be deployed to a SQL Server from SSMS using the Deploy Dacpac wizard however in this case there is a limitation. Due to sp_ssiscatalog referring to objects in the SSIS Catalog (which it has to do of course) the dacpac contains a SqlCmd variable to store the name of the database that underpins the SSIS Catalog; unfortunately the Deploy Dacpac wizard in SSMS has a rather gaping limitation in that it cannot deploy dacpacs containing SqlCmd variables. I think it is worth calling out this limitation separately in this blog post because its a limitation that all dacpac users need to be aware of. If you try and deploy the dacpac containing sp_ssiscatalog using the wizard in SSMS then this is what you will see: TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio ------------------------------ Could not deploy package. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Dac) ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Missing values for the following SqlCmd variables:SSISDB. (Microsoft.Data.Tools.Schema.Sql) ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ The message is quite correct. The SSDT DB project that I used to build this dacpac *does* have a SqlCmd variable in it called SSISDB: Quite simply, the Dac Deployment wizard in SSMS is not capable of deploying such dacpacs. Your only option for deploying such dacpacs is to use the command-line tool sqlpackage.exe. Generally I use sqlpackage.exe anyway (which is why it has taken me months to encounter the aforementioned problem) and have found it preferable to using a GUI-based wizard. Your mileage may vary. @Jamiet

• Add Bookmarks and Notes to Delicious in IE 8

  Are you constantly adding bookmarks to your Delicious account while browsing but want to keep UI use to a minimum? Add bookmarks directly to your account from the context menu using the Share with Delicious accelerator. Share with Delicious in Action To add the accelerator click on Add to Internet Explorer and confirm the installation when the secondary window appears. This is going to be much better than having the Favorites Bar or a new toolbar taking up precious UI room. When you find a webpage that you would like to bookmark right click within the page, go to All Accelerators and select Share with Delicious. The form for the new bookmark will open in a new tab with the URL and title filled in. All that you need to do is add any desired notes/tags and save the bookmark. Suppose that you want notes from the page added to the bookmark. Highlight the desired text, right click on it, then go to All Accelerators and select Share with Delicious. As before the form will open in a new tab…you can see the highlighted text was entered into the notes section for the new bookmark. All that is left to do is add an appropriate tag and save. Once you save your new bookmark the tab will auto navigate to the webpage that you just saved. Returning to our account showed the new bookmark ready for future use along with a the notes for later reference. Conclusion If you add bookmarks to your Delicious account but want to save UI room, then the Share with Delicious accelerator will make a nice addition to Internet Explorer. • Sql 2008 r2 DEV install failed

  I am trying to install Sql 2008 r2 DEVeloper on Windows 2008 STD. It previously had Sql 2008 Enterprise installed. I first uninstalled SQL 2008. I think uninstall still leaves some crap in registery, and in Program files. Installation fails in the last step of the process - installation, about couple of minutes into it. Can't insert picture for you because serverfault does not allow me to do so. But it basically it: Error message: "Installation failed" I re-installed SQL 2008 Enterprise on this box and we are not going to go to R2 on older servers that previously had SQL 2005 or SQL 2008 on it. Looking at Windows log: Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2008R2\x64\Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.SqlServer_ConfigExtension.dll". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.CRT,processorArchitecture="amd64",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.4027" could not be found. Various application areas in networked computing are converging under the HTTP umbrella with a plausible transition to purist HTTP and in turn REST fuelled by the Web2.0 storm. It was time the Data access faiths also gave up the religious silos wrapped around our long worshipped data publishing and access methods. OData is the secular solution we have at hand today. It is an open protocol for sharing data. It can be exposed via REST. It is Open as in the Microsoft Open Specification Promise. This allows virtually everyone to build Data Services for any runtime. OData is one of the key standards for Data publishing/subscribing on Microsoft Codename Dallas. For us .Netters OData data sources can be exposed/consumed via WCF Data Services and the process is very simple, elegant and intuitive. The best part of the User Group is meeting like minded people and have a great conversation with them. During the meeting I was asked why one has to go online to access SQL Server Product Documentation. I can clearly see there can be many reasons for why one wants the documentation to be available offline.
