• How to install vmware in Ubuntu 10.04

  I need to install minix3 in vmware. I m using ubuntu 10.04. i downlaoded vmware and now i am trying to install it using:-- sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r` chmod +x VMware-Player*.bundle gksudo bash ./VMware-Player*.bundle VM Player Installer window popped up Clicked on the ‘Install’ button The progress bar started going; above the bar, it says that the installer is ‘Configuring’ This is was more than 15 minutes ago and still going. Nothing else is running on the system (consuming CPU, mem, …) Is the ‘Configuring’ step supposed to take this long? Seems to me it might be hung. Question: Did i do something wrong? Is there a log some place that can help me to debug this?

• Cloning (mirroring) laptop display to area of external monitor display

  I'm using Maverick "10.10" Meercat on a HP Pavilion tx2110. This machine has an NVidia Go6150 graphics card, and sports a 1280x800 display. I have an external monitor which can do 1280x1024 resolution. FWIW I'm using openbox as my window manager; as I understand it this shouldn't be a factor. I'd like to clone the display to the monitor, so that the size of the desktop remains at 1280x800, and there is a horizontal blank area on the external monitor. I.E. I want to avoid having to pan the display of the desktop on either monitor. So the actual resolution of the monitor would be 1280x1024, but the resolution of the section of the monitor where stuff was actually being displayed would be 1280x800. Using the nvidia-settings applet, I'm able to set up the cloned display so that the desktop size is 1280x1024 (the resolution of the external monitor), but can't find a way to instead have the desktop size stay at the resolution of the laptop's built-in display. Is this achievable? Ideally I'd like the external monitor's blank area to be at the top of the screen, i.e. for it to align the display with the bottom of the screen.

• AutoHotkey cannot interact with Windows 8 Windows&hellip;or can it!

  If you’ve installed Windows 8 and are trying to use AutoHotkey (AHK) to interact with some of the Winodws 8 Windows (such as the Control Panel for example), or with apps that need to be Ran As Administrator, then you’ve likely become very frustrated as I did to discover that AHK can not send any commands (keyboard or mouse input) to these windows.  This was a huge concern as I often need to run Visual Studio as an administrator and wanted my hotkeys and hotstrings to work in Visual Studio.  After a day of fighting I finally realized the answer (and it’s pretty obvious once you think about it).  If you want AHK to be able to interact with Windows 8 Windows or apps running as administrator, then you also need to have your AHK script Run As Administrator. If you are like me then you probably have your AHK scripts set to run automatically at login, which means you don’t have the opportunity to right-click on the script and manually tell it to Run As Administrator.  Luckily the work around is simple.  First, if you want to have your AHK script (or any program for that matter) run when you log in, create a shortcut to the application and place the shortcut in: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup Note that you will need to replace “[User Name]” with your username, and that “AppData” is a hidden folder so you’ll need to turn on viewing hidden folders to see it.  So by placing that shortcut there Windows will automatically run your script when you log on.  Now, to get it to run as an administrator by default, right-click on the shortcut and go to Properties.  Under the Shortcut tab, click on the “Advanced…” button and check off “Run as administrator”.  That’s it.  Now when you log onto Windows your script will automatically start up, running as an administrator; allowing it to interact with any application and window like you had expected it to in the first place.   Happy coding!

• Have VIM jump to a ctag in an existing tab

  I have ctags configured with my vim installation. My habit is to usually have all of the relevant files I'm working on open in tabs in vim all at once. The "problem" is that if I use Ctrl+] to jump to a ctag in a file I'm editing, it will replace the buffer in that tab, even though I have another tab already open containing that symbol. It would be much better if it just switched to that tab and jumped to the symbol there instead. This way I would always have a 1-to-1 tab-to-file ratio. I noticed in the Changenotes for the taglist.vim plugin (which I also use) has an entry that says 1. Added support for jumping to a tag/file in a new or existing tab from the taglist window (works only with Vim7 and above). However, I couldn't find anything in the documentation for Taglist (or Ctags) about how to actually do this. Can any vim gurus fill me in? Thanks!

  I know that most people don't bother with things like screen anymore, but I happen to really like it, even in this GUI day and age. I still do most of my development from a BASH prompt, so it's extremely useful to me. What I'm wondering is what the easiest way is to start an instance of screen (stored in a shell script or .screenrc or somewhere else) so that it starts up with set commands already running in set windows. For example, I use a django test server, so I'd like one window to come up running "python manage.py runserver" and another blank, waiting for commands. The man page is wholly indecipherable. These old unix utilities can do quite nearly everything, so I'm sure this is possible, but I can't for the life of me figure out how. I

• Why can't I run Compiz?

  I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my laptop. The main reason I switched to Ubuntu is because I wanted to use Compiz. The first thing I did was to go to Additional Drivers and install ATI/AMD Proprietary FGRLX Graphics Driver. There was also another one available, ATI/AMD Proprietary FGRLX Graphics Driver (post-release updates), but I didn't install that one, because it basically meant the same thing to me as the one I already installed. Next, I went to the ubuntuguide.org Oneiric Wiki http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Oneiric#Compiz_Fusion So I followed the instructions there and ran this command in terminal: sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-fusion-plugins-extra emerald librsvg2-common But then, the terminal window said that the package "emerald" could not be found. So, I ran this command instead: sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-fusion-plugins-extra After that, I installed Fusion Icon by running this command: sudo apt-get install fusion-icon I restarted my computer, searched for Compiz Config Settings Manager, and clicked on it. Then, I activated Wobbly Windows. I logged off and logged back on again, but there was no wobbly windows effect. So I tried clicking on Fusion Icon, but it never started. Can someone please tell me what I did wrong here? Because I see everyone seems to be able to run Compiz except me. I really need to start Compiz, or else I think I'm going to uninstall Ubuntu.

• conky stopped displaying after daul monitors setup -- works when I detect monitors

  I just recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a clean install. I previously was using 11.10. I am also using a new laptop with a Dell docking-station and two external monitors. When I try to use the .conkyrc file that I used previously, my conky display simply doesn't show up anywhere. However, after I went to System Settings Displays and made some slight change that caused the monitors to refresh, then conky appeared as it should. • Add a Real-Time Earth Wallpaper App to Ubuntu with xplanetFX

  Are you tired of the same old wallpaper on your Ubuntu desktop? Now you can go from blah to literally spacious, real-time styled views of Earth with the xplanetFX Wallpaper App for Linux. You can conveniently access the “file type” downloads, screenshots, and jump-to links all on the front page. For our example we downloaded the .deb setup file on our system. The setup file will need to download three additional files to complete the setup process. After those are downloaded all dependencies will have been met and you can complete the installation process. Once that is done you can find xplanetFX by going to the Accessories Section of your Ubuntu Menu. This is what the main control window looks like when you start xplanetFX for the first time.   If you have to deal with a lot of spreadsheets, you’re probably really bored right now. You also might be wondering how to turn a row into a column, or a column into a row. Here’s how to do it with Google Docs Spreadsheets. If you’re an Excel user, you’re also in luck, because we’ve already shown you how to turn a row into a column, or vice-versa. It won’t make you any less bored though. Convert a Row to a Column (or backwards) The first thing you’ll need is a column or a row of information that you want to convert into the opposite. For our example, we’ve got this set of data that we created by using the Auto Fill options in Google Docs. Now in another cell, you’ll need to use the TRANSPOSE function, which you can use by simply typing in the following: =TRANSPOSE( And then selecting the cells with the mouse, or manually typing in the range of cells you want to copy. The final function in this example was: =TRANSPOSE(A1:A11) Finish it off with the final ) character to complete the function, hit the Enter key, and there we are… the column was transposed over to the right. You can use the same thing to turn columns into rows, or rows into columns—just change the range you are looking for. • Displays tabs in Firefox 3.6 across multiple rows?

  Hello, After upgrading to Firefox 3.6, I noticed that there no longer seems to be a way to have tabs all displayed in several rows when there are too many to fit in the window: http://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/firefox_tabs_multiple_rows-500x179.jpg I find it very inconvenient to have to click on the down arrow at the far-right side to go through the list of open tabs. The TabMixPlus add-on is incompatible with ReloadEvery 3.6.2, so that's not a good solution either. Does someone know if it's possible to either configure FireFox 3.6 to go back to the previous way of displaying multiple tabs, or if there's an add-on that's compatible with ReloadEvery that would do the trick? • Is there any way to use the xscreensaver gltext to monitor system information?

  I am trying to get the X screensaver gltext to monitor my system temp and maybe some other stats. Writing a script that puts together the stats periodically is no problem, but the main thing I'm running into is that gltext doesn't refresh - whatever text I feed it stays there. So, for example, I run this command: $ /usr/lib/xscreensaver/gltext -text "`cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature`" and get a gltext window showing: temperature: 60 C I can manipulate it and format it as necessary, but as my CPU heats up and cools down, it doesn't update, even if I include time variables that do. I have a script that feeds gltext the time as the first line and the temp as the second line - and although the time updates continuously as the time changes, the temperature value remains the same as whenever the screensaver started. Is it possible to do what I want, which is change the text every 60 seconds if the temperature changes?

• How to adjust Aspect Ratio in Windows Media Center

  Is there any way of adjusting the aspect ratio of movies I view in Windows Media Center on Windows 7 RTM x64? Any hidden features? Any brilliant light weight plugins? Using Shark007 Codecs, and otherwise just default Media Center and Media Player. I know I could reprocess the videos, but that would probably ruin the already bad quality. I also know I could use VLC media player, but I really would like to find a solution that works in Media Center, since VLC media player isn't especially Remote Control and media collection friendly... Update: By the way, I know I can Ctrl+Drag an edge of the media center in window mode and change the aspect ratio of the player, but that doesn't do anything to the video.

• Cannot remove wireless network profile even though admin account is used

  On my windows computer which is connected to a company domain. I have problems with the wireless networking. First of all the computer fails to connect. Second of all I cannot remove the network from the list of wireless profiles. The properties window simply claims that "This network is administered by the Administartor Account". I am currently logged in as the local administrator. I have also tried creating a new admin account and still get the same problem when trying to remove the network. My computer has only the microsoft security essentials antivirus and some VMWare+virtual box connections that I can figure might interfere, but disabling realtime protection has not helped me on this. I also cannot delete the virtual network adapters from the control panel / network adapters...

• Touchpad hardware button disables keyboard too

  I have an old but nice Samsung X50 running MM which has a key between the touchpad buttons which disables the touchpad. Very nice, no-one like to brush against the touchpad while typing. It seems to be a hardware feature -- a BIOS style window appears at the top left of the screen when you press it saying "touchpad off"; and when you press it again it says "touchpad on", and so it is, but now the keyboard has no effect in X, I can type nothing except to meta-ctl F1 to the console. After a reboot the problem persists; and the only way I have found to fix it is to blow away .gconf are replace it with a copy I made in happier times. Deleting/modifying .gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/%gconf.xml does not fix the problem. There is no way to turn off the switch in BIOS without losing the touchpad. I would prise the thing out with a screwdriver if I could, but it's a work machine. This button is the bane of my life, hanging over me like a sword of Damocles.

• modsecurity apache mod-security.conf missing

  Greetings Serverfaultians. I'm not a server guy as you can see from my noob score of 1 point. But maybe those more versed can help me. I'm using Ubuntu v13.10 32-bit Server and Apache2 v2.4.6 and I'm trying to set up and configure modsecurity and modevasive on an internet-exposed production/test server. I am trying to follow this tutorial: http://www.thefanclub.co.za/how-to/how-install-apache2-modsecurity-and-modevasive-ubuntu-1204-lts-server. But at step 3: Now add these rules to Apache2. Open a terminal window and enter: sudo vi /etc/apache2/mods-available/mod-security.conf This file does not exist. Any suggestions?

• Multi-monitor aterm transparency

  I have 3 monitors which I set the background with using xpmroot my-5760x1200bg.png I then setup aterm to use transparency by adding the following to my ~/.Xdefaults file. aterm*transparent:true aterm*shading:60 aterm*background:Black aterm*foreground:White aterm*scrollBar:true aterm*scrollBar_right:true aterm*transpscrollbar:true aterm*saveLines:32767 aterm*font:*-*-fixed-medium-r-normal--*-140-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 aterm*boldFont:*-*-fixed-bold-r-normal--*-*-140-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 I am getting transparency on my aterm windows, but the image that is coming through with the transparency isn't correct. On the left monitor things are fine, but the middle and right monitors both seem to use the leftmost 1920x1200 of the background image as what is behind the terminal window. It would be as if every screen had the same background as the monitor on the left. Is this something that can be configured to be correct, or is this a bug? I'm running Gentoo Linux with Xmonad.

• Permanent Routes Centos Questions

  So with a little help I figured out how to setup these routes and I can set them in rc.local route add -net 208.82.236.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev ppp0 metric 1 route add -net 208.82.236.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0 metric 10 my question is being that the first route is ppp0 as soon as I disconnect the modem the route is dropped how do I maintain the route or make it permanent so that next time the modem connects it will follow the route. • Colour coding of the status bar in SQL Server Management Studio - Oh dear

  The new feature in SQL Server 2008 to have your query window status bar colour coded to the server you are on is great. Its a nice way to distinguish production from development servers. Unfortunately it was pointed out to me by a client recently that it doesn't always work. To me that sort of makes it pointless. Its a bit like having breaks that work some of the time. Are you going to place Russian roulette every time you execute the query. Whats more the colour doesn't change if you change the connection. So you can flip between dev and production servers but your status bar stays the colour you set for the dev server. It really annoys me to find features that sort of work. The reason I initially gave up on SQLPrompt was that it didn't work 100% of the time and for that time it didn't work I wasted so much time trying to get it to work I wasted more time than if I didn't have it. (I will say that was 2-3 years ago). • Strange problem with Exchange client connection

  I've got a strange problem with an Exchange 2007 server running on SBS 2008. It's been working fine for users for the last 5 months, then 5 days ago they started getting a problem where Outlook would popup a window asking for credentials. If the user enters there credentials it pops up again and again, however if the user cancels the box it goes away and outlook continues to work fine. These clients all connect using Outlook Anywhere, and OWA access is also working fine. I had thought this message box may have been to do with other POP or IMAP accounts being configured in Outlook, but it's not the case. I have re-configured Outlook Anywhere on the server but to no avail. Using the RPC diagnostic tool in Outlook shows no problems. There are no errors showing in the event log. The server seems to be running fine, so to me this seems like either a client, or an RPC over HTTP issue, but I'm not getting anywhere finding the cause, any help is appreciated!
