  • Renaming the sa Account

    Today I renamed the sa account on 23 SQL Server 2005/2008 instances.  I used the CMS to assist with this task.  Later we realized all of the SQL Agent jobs were failing on these instances with the following error: “The job failed.  The owner (sa) of job XYZ does not have server access.” We use sa as the job owner, and it had correctly changed the owner to our new name as the sids had not changed.  We were at first confused why the jobs were failing but then realized restarting the SQL Agent service might help.  The restart corrected the problem. If you plan on renaming your sa account (best practice), make sure you restart the SQL Agent service afterwards to avoid failing jobs.  This is perhaps common knowledge, but it was something new learned by me today.

  • About Solaris 11 and UltraSPARC II/III/IV/IV+

    I know that I will get the usual amount of comments like "Oh, Jörg ? you can't be negative about Oracle" for this article. However as usual I want to explain the logic behind my reasoning. Yes ? I know that there is a lot of UltraSPARC III, IV and IV+ gear out there. But there are some very basic questions: Does your application you are currently running on this gear stops running just because you can't run Solaris 11 on it? What is the need to upgrade a system already in production to Solaris 11? I have the impression, that some people think that the systems get useless in the moment Oracle releases Solaris 11. I know that Sun sold UltraSPARC IV+ systems until 2009. The Sun SF490 introduced 2004 for example, that was a Sun SF480 with UltraSPARC IV and later with UltraSPARC IV+. And yes, Sun made some speedbumps. At that time the systems of the UltraSPARC III to IV+ generations were supported on Solaris 8, on Solaris 9 and on Solaris 10. However from my perspective we sold them to customers, which weren't able to migrate to Solaris 10 because they used applications not supported on Solaris 9 or who just didn't wanted to migrate to Solaris 10. Believe it or not ? I personally know two customers that migrated core systems to Solaris 10 in ? well 2008/9. This was especially true when the M3000 was announced in 2008 when it closed the darned single socket gap. It may be different at you site, however that's what I remember about that time when talking with customers. At first: Just because there is no Solaris 11 for UltraSPARC III, IV and IV+, it doesn't mean that Solaris 10 will go away anytime soon. I just want to point you to "Expect Lifetime Support - Hardware and Operating Systems". It states about Premier Support:Maintenance and software upgrades are included for Oracle operating systems and Oracle VM for a minimum of eight years from the general availability date.GA for Solaris 10 was in 2005. Plus 8 years ? 2013 ? at minimum. Then you can still opt for 3 years of "Extended Support" ? 2016 ? at minimum. 2016 your systems purchased in 2009 are 7 years old. Even on systems purchased at the very end of the lifetime of that system generation. That are the rules as written in the linked document. I said minimum The actual dates are even further in the future: Premier Support for Solaris 10 ends in 2015, Extended support ends 2018. Sustaining support ? indefinite. You will find this in the document "Oracle Lifetime Support Policy: Oracle Hardware and Operating Systems".So I don't understand when some people write, that Oracle is less protective about hardware investments than Sun. And for hardware it's the same as with Sun: Service 5 years after EOL as part of Premier Support. I would like to write about a different perspective as well: I have to be a little cautious here, because this is going in the roadmap area, so I will mention the public sources here: John Fowler told last year that we have to expect at at least 3x the single thread performance of T3 for T4. We have 8 cores in T4, as stated by Rick Hetherington. Let's assume for a moment that a T4 core will have the performance of a UltraSPARC core (just to simplify math and not to disclosing anything about the performance, all existing SPARC cores are considered equal). So given this pieces of information, you could consolidate 8 V215, 4 or 8 V245, 2 full blown V445,2 full blown 490, 2 full blown M3000 on a single T4 SPARC processor. The Fowler roadmap prezo talked about 4-socket systems with T4. So 32 V215, 16 to 8 V245, 8 fullblown V445, 8 full blown V490, 8 full blown M3000 in a system image. I think you get the idea. That said, most of the systems we are talking about have already amortized and perhaps it's just time to invest in new systems to yield other advantages like reduced space consumptions, like reduced power consumption, like some of the neat features sun4v gives you, and yes ? reduced number of processor licenses for Oracle and less money for Oracle HW/SW support. As much as I dislike it myself that my own UltraSPARC III and UltraSPARC II based systems won't run on Solaris 11 (and I have quite a few of them in my personal lab), I really think that the impact on production environments will be much less than most people think now. By the way: The reason for this move is a quite significant new feature. I will tell you that it was this feature, when it's out. I assume, telling just a word more could lead to much more time to blog.

  • Cannot mount a CIFS network share on Ubuntu over VPN

    I have setup u VPN connection to our Windows 2008 server at the office and it seems to work fine. For some reason, however, I still am not able to access the network shares over a VPN connection using my standard fstab entries. When I am physically connected to the network, it works fine, but now when trying this over VPN I get the following error: mount error(110): Connection timed out Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) My /etc/fstab looks like this: //server2008/share /mnt/share cifs iocharset=utf8,credentials=/home/aron/.smbcredentials,uid=1000 0 0 As said, it works fine when physically connected, but over VPN it just wont work. Any help is appreciated.

  • Ati Radeon HD 5850 + two screens with different resolutions

    How can I use these screens like I would use in Windows? When I turn off "copy" it gives me an error. I have tried community drivers and AMD drivers but both fail at this task. I use Ubuntu 12.04 with latest updates. It did not work in Ubuntu 11.10 either. I use DVI to connect my PC to my monitor and HDMi to my TV. It is a Sony Bravia, bought in 2008. I can't remember the model. Also, this same problem occurs when I connect to two Full HD monitors, both DVI. I cannot turn of the cloning of screens. How do I turn it off? Windows can do that.

    A web application lets the user browse its screens for future or past months. The time period the user is currently viewing follows the user through every screen of the system. But users can be logged in for a month or more. After a certain period of inactivity, we will prompt the user: You were viewing November 2008 when you last clicked. Want to view the current (default) time period instead? How long between user clicks should we wait to show this message? I'm guessing somewhere between 30 minutes and 3 hours most people will forget what they were doing, but I'd love to have some data, or someone's experience to base it on. Other suggestions related to this issue?

  • The layout page "~/Views/Shared/_Layout.cshtml" could not be found

    I got this error and I can't figure out what is going on. I am positive the _layout.cshtml resides in the shared folder and for the sake of trying things out, I moved to the Home folder and it then told that the Views/Home/_Layout.cshtml couldn't be found there either. So now I'm thinking the problem is in the call for this file for some reason. I'm not going to pretend I know ASP.NET MVC4, so please when you answer, explain it as you would to someone who is not familiar with the system at all. Believe it or not, this error came from tutorial #1 ha ha Here's the code to show that I did code it right: @{ ViewBag.Title = "Home Page"; Layout = "~/Views/Shared/_Layout.cshtml"; } And here is a picture of the location p.s.     Let's say that I run a forum dedicated to computer hardware. Naturally, people are going to ask questions like: What is the best laptop for running [os] Or What is the best video card for under [amount] These may be perfectly fine discussions, but the content loses usefulness over time. An answer to either question asked in 2007 might still be relevant in 2008, but definitely not in 2012. Is there a way that I can tell search engines that certain pages might not give visitors what they're looking for after a certain date, and perhaps hint to a page on my site that would provide good information? Perhaps something I could set in HTTP response headers, meta tags or even a site map?

    The system works and its called Microsoft Connect , who would of thought it :) Following on from my previous blog post MicroSoft – Follow best practices, on the connect item , the followup stated that changes had been made in 2008.  I genuinely thought that a change would take an age to trickle through to the customer. But after firing up 2008R2 RTM and examining the SqlAgent traffic with profiler , where before i would see non-parameterized sql, I now see RPC calls.    Excellent , i get my cache back.

  • Solaris 11.2: Functional Deprecation

    In Solaris 11.1, I updated the system headers to enable use of several attributes on functions, including noreturn and printf format, to give compilers and static analyzers more information about how they are used to give better warnings when building code. In Solaris 11.2, I've gone back in and added one more attribute to a number of functions in the system headers: __attribute__((__deprecated__)). This is used to warn people building software that they’re using function calls we recommend no longer be used. While in many cases the Solaris Binary Compatibility Guarantee means we won't ever remove these functions from the system libraries, we still want to discourage their use. I made passes through both the POSIX and C standards, and some of the Solaris architecture review cases to come up with an initial list which the Solaris architecture review committee accepted to start with. This set is by no means a complete list of Obsolete function interfaces, but should be a reasonable start at functions that are well documented as deprecated and seem useful to warn developers away from. More functions may be flagged in the future as they get deprecated, or if further passes are made through our existing deprecated functions to flag more of them.     Today I got an exception in a report using SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 R2, but only when attempting to go to the last page of a large report: The report execution sgjahs45wg5vkmi05lq4zaee has expired or cannot be found.;Digging into the logs I found this:library!ReportServer_0-47!149c!12/06/2012-12:37:58:: e ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ReportServerStorageException: , An error occurred within the report server database.  This may be due to a connection failure, timeout or low disk condition within the database.;I knew it wasn't a network problem or timeout because I could repeat the problem at will.  I checked the disk space and that seemed fine as well.  The real issue was a lack of memory on the database server that had the ReportServer database.  Restarting the SQL Server engine freed up plenty of RAM and the problem immediately went away.

  • SQL Server MCM Changes and Readiness Videos

    Towards the end of 2010, Microsoft made some changes to the Microsoft Certified Master for SQL Server 2008 program. The process to certification required to have a 3 week bootcamp/course in Redmond. This has changed now.  It has been mapped to 2 exams. Get information from Microsoft Learning with regards to the changes, process, resources and pricing for the certification exams.  http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/master-sql-path.aspx What has happened here too, is some SQL MCM rotation Instructors and SQL MCMs  have created materials to prep for those exams.  I see this as a huge benefit for individuals who are planning to take on the MCM, but really it is of huge benefit for all individuals who deal with working around SQL Server on a regular basis.   • Released: Who is Active v11.11

    It's been several months since the last Who is Active fix, so I thought I'd call this one out specifically via a blog post. v11.11 contains a few minor fixes and enhancements, which you can read about on the download page .
