• SQL Auto Close Options

  Found an interesting thing that others have run across but it is the first time I’ve seen it. A customer emailed to say that the SQL 2008 db that I had helped him with seemed to be going into recovery mode on a regular basis while watching the SQL Management Studio screen. Needless to say he was a bit nervous and about to take some drastic steps. Eventually he found that the Auto Close option was set to true. When this is set to true, the database automatically closes all connections and unlocks the mdf file after 300 milliseconds. When a new connection is made it spins backup… Great for xcopy deployment on a client machine but not a multi-user server based application. So the warning… if you have started a database with SQL express and then move it to a production SQL server, make sure you check that the Auto Close option is set to false. See options screen below:

  After I got done speaking at the SQL Server 2008 R2 Launch Event yesterday I came back to the hotel room for a web-meeting with some of the other teachers at the University of Washington. As teachers we are always looking to improve the knowledge transfer to our students – and the Program Director found an interesting study that I thought I might share here. Below is an un-labeled chart showing the effectiveness of learning methods according to a recent study. At the top are the labels. (“Teaching” here means students teaching each other). • Why doesn't Microsoft support virtualizing a Server OS on Windows 7?

  Microsoft doesn't support any server operating systems in Windows Virtual PC. Virtual Server 2005 doesn't run on Windows 7. Hyper-V is great, but I don't want to run Server 2008 as my main OS, and I love having Windows 7 run on the bare metal. I don't want to mess around with a dual boot. My only option to continue developing in Windows 7 with a virtual server environment on hand is VMWare or VirtualBox. Other members in my team use Hyper-V, and VHDs are common. I'd prefer to be able to use their VHDs, so that leaves me VirtualBox. Does anyone know if Microsoft is planning on bringing server virtualization back to the workstation?

  Hyper-V is coming to Windows 8, but you must have a processor that supports SLAT. Virtual machines created with Virtual PC aren’t easily transferred to Windows 2008 Hyper-V and vice-versa. With Windows 8, it will be easy to move vhds from Windows 8 on your laptop or desktop to Windows 8 server and back again. • How do you avoid working on the wrong branch?

  Being careful is usually enough to prevent problems, but sometimes I need to double check the branch I'm working on (e.g. "hmm... I'm in the dev branch, right?") by checking the source control path of a random file. In looking for an easier way, I thought of naming the solution files accordingly (e.g. MySolution_Dev.sln) but with different file names in each branch, I can't merge the solution files. It's not that big of a deal but are there any methods or "small tricks" you use to quickly ensure you're in the correct branch? I'm using Visual Studio 2010 with TFS 2008.

• KVM guest disk performance

  My KVM guest does max. 200MB/s although the host does easily 700MB/s (Raid 0 with 4 SSDs). Configuration: File-based storage (raw), cache none. Host 24 cores, 96GB ram, Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and virt-manager. I suspect the CPU to be the bottleneck (one core goes up during hdparm). Anyone experienced the same or has an explanation ? Edit: one more info: guest is the same as host (Ubuntu 12). Same poor disk performance observed with Windows 2008 R2 and Suse Enterprise Linux (9 or 10 I think). Max 1 guest running.

• Debugging Windows

  After installing VS 2008 on a new PC I noticed that the Autos and Locals windows did not show up when debugging. So I went to the logical place to find them View/Other Windows. No luck they were not there. I use VS every day but like a lot of folks I only need to install it every few years, usually with a new PC. So I forgot where they were. Finding them is easy, just start debugging a project and go to Debug/Windows. The Autos and Locals windows along with the others will be there. • Screen dims on opening certain applications on Macbook

  I have ubuntu 11.10 installed on an old 2008 macbook. There is an issue of screen dimming that I didnt find anywhere else on the forums. The issue is that the screen is dimmed when I open certain applications (Firefox, Software Center) and this cannot be readjusted by the physical brightness buttons on the keyboard. I tried a bunch of things on the barely barely visible screen, and had no choice but to restart. This has happened everytime. Does anyone know how to solve this?

• Editing XML Literals Embedded Expressions in Visual Basic 2010 (Avner Aharoni)

  The implicit line continuation feature in Visual Basic 2010 provided an opportunity to improve the code editing experience in XML literals embedded expressions. In Visual Studio 2008, pressing Enter inside an embedded expression would result in the cursor being positioned to the left of the end embedded expression tag. In Visual Studio 2010, pressing Enter inserts a newline for the cursor, and the end embedded expression tag moves to the line below.   When I found out yesterday that one of my top 5 development tools .NET Reflector will no longer be free at the end of February, I thought I'd see if work had started on a good open source alternative...and guess what...work on ILSpy is already well underway!! There seems to be a difference of opinion on what Red Gate said when they purchased .NET Reflector from Lutz Roeder in 2008. They say that they would try to keep it free, where as others think they promised to keep it free. Either way at the time I thought it was a smart purchase by Red Gate as it would raise their profile overnight within the .Net community. But not only are they going to charge $35 for v7 (which is up to them), they have also time-bombed v6 to force users to pay. This I think will lower their profile overnight within the .Net community!! Maybe they are been slightly naive in thinking the community wouldn't just write an alternative?  #

Choose a concise but meaningful title but avoid words like "urgent" Post to the correct section of the forum - some people specialise in a particular section of a given forum Make it clear that you have already made an effort to answer yourself. Summerise the environmental context of your question e.g. If using SQL then state the version e.g. SQLExpress 2008 If you need to post a code or markup sample, tidy it up by removing extraneous blank lines and set the tab spacing to 2 rather than 4. Take your time composing the question so that it is set out as clearly as possible. Remember that the majority of people providing answers do so in their own time. • Booting 11.10 from USB stick on MacBook Pro 5,1 fails

  I've created a bootable memory stick on a Windows computer, and tested it on an HP PC. It's made from a 64-bit image of Ubuntu 11.10, downloaded from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download. When I boot from this memory stick, there is some kind of boot menu, where I can choose to run Ubuntu from the memory stick, or install. I select Run from memory stick. (the words may be wrong here, I'm taking it from memory.) From this point, the screen is black (but backlighted), and I can't do anything but turn off the computer. It gets hot, too. Has anyone been more successful than me? Are there known issues? The computer is a 15 inch MacBook Pro 5,1 (unibody, late 2008), 4 GB memory.

  Back in 2008, smartphones were a small market and it was commonplace for sites to be designed for a fixed width - say, 900px or 960px - with the page centered if the browser window was larger. Many designers said fluid width was better, but since user screens typically varied between 1024x768 and 1920x1080, fluid width allowed longer line length than is optimal for ease of reading, and so many sites (including Stack Exchange) use fixed width. Now that mobile devices are common, what is the the best approach to support both desktop and mobile browsers? Establish a separate mobile site (e.g: mobile.example.com) Serve a different CSS to mobile devices; if so how? Server-side browser sniffing, or a @media rule? Use Javascript or something to adapt the website dynamically to the client? Should all websites be expected to be responsive? Some kind of fluid layout Something else?

  I have been thinking about creating a top down 2D car game for HTML5. For my first game I wrote the physics and collisions my self but for this one I would like to use some ready made library. I found out Box2D and its JS port. http://box2d-js.sourceforge.net It seems to be quite old port, made in 2008. Is it lacking many features of current Box2D or does it have major issues with it? And are there any alternatives for it?
