• Brightness going up to 100% on loading certain websites in Chrome

  I'm using Google Chrome version 21.0.1180.89 on Ubuntu 12.04 and my laptop is a Sony VAIO VPCCW15FL (spec sheet). My video driver is the propietary "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (post-release updates)(version-current updates)". After installing Ubuntu, I discovered that neither the brightness control buttons (hardware) or the brightness slider (software) worked, and found out I could get the hardware buttons to work by installing the nvidiabl.deb package and oBacklight script. I'm using nvidiabl-dkms 0.77 and oBacklight 0.3.8. Still, the slider on the Ubuntu "Settings" does not work, but I don't care. There is an annoying thing happening when loading certain pages in Google Chrome: the brightness goes up to 100% when loading the webpage or when leaving it (closing the tab or typing a different URL on the omnibox). However, the "brightness tooltip" (that default brightness notification) remembers the position it was set to, so if I adjust the brightness with the HW buttons, the level gets adjusted relative to the value it was set to before "going 100%". I disabled the flash PPAPI plugin, but left the NPAPI plugin enabled, and the problem went away for pages with flash content. Still, the same thing happens when viewing HTML5 video, or when loading, for example, the Chrome Web Store or using the Scratchpad extension. I suppose it has to do with the rendering of certain elements using the GPU, but this is just a guess. This brightness thing does not happen when using Firefox 15.0 or any other application I have used yet. Does anybody know why this may be happening and what could I do to fix this without changing browser? Thanks a lot.

• LiveCD/USB boot issues with Ubuntu 12.04 on blank drive

  Not sure how common this issue is, or even how badly I may be missing something simple, but I am a first time usuer having some serious problems. Some background: old HDD running Windows 7 developed too many bad sectors and is bricked. I'm attempting to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a fresh 1TB drive by booting from a liveCD USB flash drive. I've not been able to get past the initial menu screen, however, as the process stalls out shortly after selecting an option (both boot from drive and install to drive). I've tried multiple USB drives as well as CDs, modified the boot order, flashed BIOS, and even tried booting with only the flash drive and the keyboard connected with the same results.Typically what I observe is that the OS begins what I think is compliling, listing drivers and components before freezing on one. When the keyboard is plugged in, its the keyboard driver, before I flashed BIOS, it was a BIOS related item, now its an unknown entry. The computer seems to be reading the drive (idicated by USB light flashing or CD drive reving) for roughly 10 minutes with no progress, followed by the drives going quiet. Some spec info: Motherboard: ASUS P5Q Pro, BIOS version 2102 (latest version), Intel chipset CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz help would be appriciated!

• Ubuntu install can't find hard drives

  I recently got a Dell Inspiron Special Edition 7720 computer. I am trying to install Ubuntu along side Windows. When I use the WUBI installer, the installation of Ubuntu works as long as I do not boot into Windows; if I boot into Windows, when I go back into Ubuntu, I am given a variety of error messages which claim to have corrupt or missing kernel/root directory, etc. I have been working with this problem for about a week, and have reinstalled Ubuntu MANY times. So far, I have eliminated all of the following problems: Corrupt WUBI installation (Downloaded multiple times, used on other systems), I have tried using a CD and a flash drive, both of which work on other computers. I know that no program within Ubuntu is creating the problem. I know that others have successfully installed Ubuntu on a computer with my operating system (Windows 7 SP1). This is a much shortened version of the original question, which has been up for about 5 days, and included a more detailed description of the problem, but left everyone clueless as to the source of this problem. When I spoke with the Dell service technician who came over today to replace my keyboard, he suggested that the driver for my HDD was so new that it was not compatible with the current version of Ubuntu. His reasoning is as follows: 1) During an install from a flash drive or CD, where I am supposed to get the option to wipe my system or create a dual boot, I get a window that asks me to select a hard drive partition, but none are listed. 2) This model of computer was made public in June of this year, while Ubuntu was released in April Adopting this theory, it would seem to me that the WUBI install fails after booting into Windows because Ubuntu can no longer find the files that it needs to load. Does this theory seem at all plausible to anyone? I just want to install Ubuntu and have it stay on my computer. I don't care how I put it there, I just need it to work, so I would TRULY appreciate any advice or suggestions anyone could give. Thanks so much for your time and support!!!

  I am having an issue, where I have changed the boot order to cdrom and turned off hd boot all together and still my system is unable to detect ubuntu and claims, no boot device found. Some additional information: When this same cd is inserted and dell is booted into win 2003 server (which is what is installed on this machine), it detects the cd drive but not the cd at all (keeps asking me to insert disc) I have also created a bootable flash drive using LinuxLive USB creator and when this is selected in boot order again am told no boot device detected. I was speaking to dell and they suggested perhaps there are no drivers on the actual ubuntu installation for the hardware on this Dell and hence the failure of this dell to detect the ubuntu cd. Now, I don't know too much about computers, but this last bit confused me a bit. If the system detects the hardware (when it is booting it sees the cd rom and in bios it sees when the flash drive is connected), then shouldn't it be able to read what is on those drives? However, if there is some firmware or software install that needs to happen, could someone please tell me where to find the correct drivers for ubuntu and dell poweredge to work together? Shall I be installing the desktop version or the server edition, also, 32 bit or 63 bit? Thank you in advance.

  I had Windows 8, I installed Ubuntu for a new OS, Then I want to sadly go back to Windows , I have a Windows Vista *.iso but I can't boot from it. When I try to extract the '.iso file and have the contents on my USB so it can boot up , When I restart and click F9 for my Boot Device Options , Only my Hard Drive and CD ROM are there but my "Generic Flash Drive" is not , But when I do not have Windows Vista '.iso on it , It will show up in the list. How can I make a partition of some sort, Provide instructions since I am new at this all , then I need to be able to use the Windows Vista installer and install Windows Vista, I would like Dual-Boot if possible. Info: I have the HP 2000 Laptop (Mine was removed from the Best Buy Website so the closest laptop to the specifications and the design is the link at the bottom) I am running Ubuntu 12.10. I have 4GB of RAM , 220 GB in my Hard Drive left , I have a USB Flash Drive which works sometimes , other times it fails. • Ubuntu 11.04 64bits Keeps Randomly Freezing

  This has been a real headache for me since the number of freezes has increase from twice a week to about 1 or twice a day. The system just halts and nothing can be done but hitting the restart button. At the beginning I thought it was related to Flash since I was getting random freezes when playing full screen flash videos online. I also thought it could be the wireless pci card. But the system has freezed using browsing around GNOME. The truth is, the freezes are really random and strange. I checked this thread Ubuntu keeps randomly freezing and try to ssh my computer using another one, but I could not ssh since it was really totally frozen. NumLock or CapsLock wasn't responding or blinking. Since I could not ssh I, also ignored this article https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze According to my wife, the system has also halted under Win7 Pro 64bit but with less frequency. Here is my system configuration Intel Core i7 2600k ASRock Z68 Extreme3 gen3 Motherboard Crucial M4 128GB CT128M4SSD2 SSD WD Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB SATA II G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR2 OCZ ModXStream 600W Power Supply Rosewill RNX-N300X PCI Wireless Adapter No external Graphics Card I remove the Wireless card and used Ethernet to see if the problem was the that, but I got a freeze after doing that. I also ran memtest86 and everything was ok. The only other thing I might suspect of is the SSD. I will try to clone the SSD to a HDD to see if that solve the problem. At this point I am stuck with the freezes. Do anyone have a clue of why this is happening and how can i solve this?

• Can't access computer

  I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 on an Intel NUC and it won't boot! The last successful boot was earlier today but now each time I try it gets stuck on the Grub menu where it prompts for memory check etc. This is not a dual boot system, so this screen shouldn't ever appear, and it never has before. It's GRUB version 2.02~beta2-9, which is a little disconcerting, as I'm on the stable sources. Unfortunately the keyboard (I've tried 2 keyboards just in case) is not responding at this point in the boot process, so I can't select the "Ubuntu" menu option in Grub. The keyboard works during the bios stage, so I can configure it to boot from USB, and I tried a flash drive with 14.04 on it. The flash drive works in my laptop but is completely ignored by the NUC (I tried all 3 USB ports!). It seems that I have no way of getting into the machine at all! The Intel support site was my first option, but the site is down. I expect it's a long shot, but if anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful.

• current_user and Comments on Posts - Create another association or loop posts? - Ruby on Rails

  I have created a blog application using Ruby on Rails and have just added an authentication piece and it is working nicely. I am now trying to go back through my application to adjust the code such that it only shows information that is associated with a certain user. Currently, Users has_many :posts and Posts has_many :comments. When a post is created I am successfully inserting the user_id into the post table. Additionally I am successfully only displaying the posts that belong to a certain user upon their login in the /views/posts/index.html.erb view. My problem is with the comments. For instance on the home page, when logged in, a user will see only posts that they have written, but comments from all users on all posts. Which is not what I want and need some direction in correcting. I want only to display the comments written on all of the logged in users posts. Do I need to create associations such that comments also belong to user? Or is there a way to adjust my code to simply loop through post to display this data. • Casting an object using 'as' returns null: myObject = newObject as MyObject; // null

  I am trying to create a custom object in AS3 to pass information to and from a server, which in this case will be Red5. In the below screenshots you will see that I am able to send a request for an object from as3, and receive it successfully from the java server. However, when I try to cast the received object to my defined objectType using 'as', it takes the value of null. It is my understanding that that when using "as" your checking to see if your variable is a member of the specified data type. If the variable is not, then null will be returned. This screenshot illustrates that I am have successfully received my object 'o' from red5 and I am just about to cast it to the (supposedly) identical datatype testObject of LobbyData: However, when testObject = o as LobbyData; runs, it returns null. :( Below you will see my specifications both on the java server and the as3 client. I am confident that both objects are identical in every way, but for some reason flash does not think so. I have been pulling my hair out for a long time, does anyone have any thoughts? • Web Interfaces not opening even after Port Forwarding is said to be working!

  I'm encountering this strange problem which has baffled me to the ground, and which I haven't encountered even after years of doing port forwarding .. ! I am hoping somebody here can help me solve this mystery .. :) My network configuration is as follows: I have a DSL modem (custom made and branded by my ISP) which is receiving a DSL stream ... it has an external IP which is visible to the world, say, 11.22.33.44 ... This modem has DHCP enabled, has an internal IP for itself, which is 192.168.1.1 .. it is connected to 2 laptops via and ethernet cable .. Laptop 1 has IP 192.168.1.2, and Laptop 2 has IP 192.168.1.3 ... On Laptop 1, two applications are running, jDownloader and Media Player Classic, which have their web interfaces on ports 8765 and 13579, respectively ... I can access both of these web interfaces from Laptop 2 by opening these addresses: 192.1681.2:8765 and 192.168.1.2:13579 ... both of their web interfaces open up, meaning the web interfaces are working fine .. Moving on, I now want to access these web interfaces from outside my network as well, and so I've configured port forwarding in my PTCL modem to forward all traffic on ports between 8000 and 14000 (both TCP and UDP) to IP 192.168.1.2 ... I have verified that port forwarding is working by testing it using PortForward.com's port checker tool, and this website too: [URL]http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/[/URL] When I use the website, if I'm running the applications on Laptop 2, the website reports that the port is open .. if I then close the application, the website reports the port is closed ... This makes sense as nothing is listening on my machine in the latter case .. Also, if I disable port forwarding in my modem, again, the website reports the port is closed ... so, the website's results seem to be okay ... Same of the above can be said when I'm used PortForward.com's port checker tool ... So again, everything okay so far ... Now, here comes the problem !! ... Despite the above tools reporting that port forwarding is working, I am unable to open the web interfaces from outside my network ... So for example, if I tried to browse 11.22.33.44:8765 or 11.22.33.44:13579, nothing opens in my browser ... But if I accessed these web server's locally from Laptop 3, by typing in 192.168.1.2:8765 or 192.168.1.2:13579, they opened ... So where is the problem here ?? The tools report unanimously that port forwarding is working, and yet I am unable to open the web interfaces from outside the network .. Also note that I have disabled the firewall from my computer, and have also made sure that any option in the above programs (whose web interfaces I am trying to open) that says only local connections are to be accepted, is disabled ... So whats the problem ... ?!! Any ideas ??

• NHibernate won't persist DateTime SqlDateTime overflow

  I am working on an ASP.NET MVC project with NHibernate as the backend and am having some trouble getting some dates to write back to my SQL Server database tables. These date fields are NOT nullable, so the many answers here about how to setup nullable datetimes have not helped. Basically when I try to save the entity which has a DateAdded and a LastUpdated fields, I am getting a SqlDateTime overflow exception. I have had a similar problem in the past where I was trying to write a datetime field into a smalldatetime column, updating the type on the column appeared to fix the problem. My gut feeling is that its going to be some problem with the table definition or some type of incompatible data types, and the overflow exception is a bit of a bum steer. I have attached an example of the table definition and the query that NHibernate is trying to run, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. There is no sound from this adapter at the present, although it worked just before on the previous installation. • Slow Windows Explorer on Windows 7

  I have Laptop with i7 (4 cores), 8GB ram and SSD OCZ Vertex 3 MaxIOPS which in testing that I did just now does 400mb/s+ read/write. However the responsiveness of Windows Explorer is far from being perfect. Opening up Computer, Documents, going into folders is very slow (1-5seconds). I don't have any viruses or spyware and I have tried changing properties to optimize view for General Items. I tried disabling Search Indexer but it made search in Outlook 2010 crawl and didn't bring any other effect. Even double clicking on file takes some time to open things up (like clicking a Word document). I don't have any drives mapped, my computer is not joined to domain. I have multiple VPN connections that I connect to but they all have disabled default gateways. I tried using CC Cleaner or some Windows 7 Tweaks app to disable some things. I am power user using Visual Studio, Tortoise SVN and other developer/administration apps. Any non obvious ideas? Edit: So I've been trying to pinpoint where the issue comes from and it seems that straight after reboot Windows Explorer opens very fast, when I load 3-4 programs (Royal TS, Visual Studio, Outlook) it's noticeably slower and the more programs I have it gets worse. After I start closing programs it starts working better and if I leave 2 open it's fast again. I tried doing some research with DiskMon and other programs from sysinternals but couldn't find anything suspicious.   I'm having an intermittent issue where asterisk will play our greeting to the caller, and then drop the call instead of making our phones ring. I'm unable to reproduce the problem with any phones I have here, and many callers get through just fine. Some callers though, run into the problem, and I can't find any pattern to it. The bit of information I could find said it was caused by an error in evaluating a dialplan expression. • Scan a Windows PC for Viruses from a Ubuntu Live CD

  Getting a virus is bad. Getting a virus that causes your computer to crash when you reboot is even worse. We’ll show you how to clean viruses from your computer even if you can’t boot into Windows by using a virus scanner in a Ubuntu Live CD. There are a number of virus scanners available for Ubuntu, but we’ve found that avast! is the best choice, with great detection rates and usability. Unfortunately, avast! does not have a proper 64-bit version, and forcing the install does not work properly. If you want to use avast! to scan for viruses, then ensure that you have a 32-bit Ubuntu Live CD. If you currently have a 64-bit Ubuntu Live CD on a bootable flash drive, it does not take long to wipe your flash drive and go through our guide again and select normal (32-bit) Ubuntu 9.10 instead of the x64 edition. For the purposes of fixing your Windows installation, the 64-bit Live CD will not provide any benefits. Once Ubuntu 9.10 boots up, open up Firefox by clicking on its icon in the top panel. Navigate to http://www.avast.com/linux-home-edition. Click on the Download tab, and then click on the link to download the DEB package. Save it to the default location. While avast! is downloading, click on the link to the registration form on the download page. Fill in the registration form if you do not already have a trial license for avast!. By the time you’ve filled out the registration form, avast! will hopefully be finished downloading. Open a terminal window by clicking on Applications in the top-left corner of the screen, then expanding the Accessories menu and clicking on Terminal. In the terminal window, type in the following commands, pressing enter after each line. cd Downloadssudo dpkg –i avast* This will install avast! on the live Ubuntu environment. To ensure that you can use the latest virus database, while still in the terminal window, type in the following command: sudo sysctl –w kernel.shmmax=128000000 Now we’re ready to open avast!. Click on Applications on the top-left corner of the screen, expand the Accessories folder, and click on the new avast! Antivirus item. You will first be greeted with a window that asks for your license key. Hopefully you’ve received it in your email by now; open the email that avast! sends you, copy the license key, and paste it in the Registration window. avast! Antivirus will open. You’ll notice that the virus database is outdated. Click on the Update database button and avast! will start downloading the latest virus database. To scan your Windows hard drive, you will need to “mount” it. While the virus database is downloading, click on Places on the top-left of your screen, and click on your Windows hard drive, if you can tell which one it is by its size. If you can’t tell which is the correct hard drive, then click on Computer and check out each hard drive until you find the right one. When you find it, make a note of the drive’s label, which appears in the menu bar of the file browser. Also note that your hard drive will now appear on your desktop. By now, your virus database should be updated. At the time this article was written, the most recent version was 100404-0. In the main avast! window, click on the radio button next to Selected folders and then click on the “+” button to the right of the list box. It will open up a dialog box to browse to a location. To find your Windows hard drive, click on the “>” next to the computer icon. In the expanded list, find the folder labelled “media” and click on the “>” next to it to expand it. In this list, you should be able to find the label that corresponds to your Windows hard drive. If you want to scan a certain folder, then you can go further into this hierarchy and select that folder. However, we will scan the entire hard drive, so we’ll just press OK. Click on Start scan and avast! will start scanning your hard drive. If a virus is found, you’ll be prompted to select an action. If you know that the file is a virus, then you can Delete it, but there is the possibility of false positives, so you can also choose Move to chest to quarantine it. When avast! is done scanning, it will summarize what it found on your hard drive. You can take different actions on those files at this time by right-clicking on them and selecting the appropriate action. When you’re done, click Close. Your Windows PC is now free of viruses, in the eyes of avast!. Reboot your computer and with any luck it will now boot up! Alternatives to avast! If avast! and a liberal amount of Googling doesn’t fix your problem, it’s possible that a different virus scanner will fix your obscure issue. Here are a list of other virus scanners available for Ubuntu that are either free or offer free trials. See their support forums for help on installing these virus scanners. • Upgrade existing WinForms applications to use the latest RadControls

  Upgrading projects to new versions can be a pain, especially when you have to update several assemblies from a single version, as is the case with RadControls for WinForms. Q1 2010 simplifies this process a lot, by giving a couple of ways (one new and one updated) to upgrade existing applications to the latest and greatest version of RadControls for WinForms: By using the new Visual Studio Extensions (VSX), available in VS2005, VS2008 and VS2010 RC; By using the updated Project Upgrade Utility. Here are the steps: Upgrading a classic Windows Forms application to the latest RadControls for WinForms by using the Visual Studio Extensions Install RadControls for WinForms Q1 2010 Open the classic Windows Forms application (VB or C#) Open the Telerik Menu and select RadControls for WinForms --> Convert to Telerik WinForms Application     Select the Telerik controls you plan to use in the application, as well as a theme, and click OK. The VSX package will add the needed assemblies to your project automatically for you.     Replace the standard controls on your form with the respective Telerik controls.     Run the application to see the result. Upgrading an older RadControls application to the latest RadControls for WinForms by using the Visual Studio Extensions Install RadControls for WinForms Q1 2010. Open your current RadControls application (VB or C#), which uses pre-Q1 2010 assembly versions. Open the Telerik Menu and select RadControls for WinForms --> Upgrade Wizard   Choose to either use the online downloader of the latest version, or to use the currently installed version.
