• Java: error handling with try-catch, empty-try-catch, dummy-return

  A searh uses recursively defined function that easily throws exceptions. I have tried 3 ways to handle exeptions: to ignore with an empty-try-catch() add-dummy-return stop err-propagation due to exeption throw a specific except. (this part I don't really understand. If I throw except, can I force it to continue elsewhere, not continuing the old except-thrown-path?) Some exceptions I do not realy care like during execution removed files -exception (NullPointer) but some I really do like unknown things. Possible exceptions: // 1. if a temp-file or some other file removed during execution -> except. // 2. if no permiss. -> except. // 3. ? --> except. The code is Very import for the whole program. I earlier added clittered-checks, try-catches, avoided-empty-try-catches but it really blurred the logic. Some stoned result here would make the code later much easier to maintain. It was annoying to track random exeptions due to some random temp-file removal! How would you handle exceptions for the critical part? • Adding image to RichTextBox programatically does not show in Xaml property

  Trying to add an image to a RichTextBox progamatically from a Stream. • Problem with JSON, Struts 2 and Ajax.

  Hello, I have an apllication with Struts 2, Spring and I want to send JSON as a response to an Ajax request, but my server in not sending the JSON in the response. And maybe for that reason my ajax enters in my handleError function where xmlHttpRequest.readyState is 4 and xmlHttpRequest.status is 0. Can anyone tell me what may the problem be? Thanks.

• "Wrapping" a BindingList<T> propertry with a List<T> property for serialization.

  I'm writing an app that allows users search and browse catalogs of widgets. My WidgetCatalog class is serialized and deserialized to and from XML files using DataContractSerializer. My app is working now but I think I can make the code a lot more efficient if I started taking advantage of data binding rather then doing everything manually. Here's a stripped down version of my current WidgetCatalog class. [DataContract(Name = "WidgetCatalog")] class WidgetCatalog { [DataContract(Name = "Name")] public string Name { get; set; } [DataContract(Name = "Widgets")] public List<Widget> Widgets { get; set; } } I had to write a lot of extra code to keep my UI in sync when widgets are added or removed from a catalog, or their internal properties change. I'm pretty inexperienced with data-binding, but I think I want a BindingList<Widget> rather than a plain old List<Widget>. Is this right? In the past when I had similar needs I found that BindingList<T> does not serialize very well. Or at least the Event Handers between the items and the list are not serialized. I was using XmlSerializer though, and DataContractSerializer may work better. So I'm thinking of doing something like the code below. [DataContract(Name = "WidgetCatalog")] class WidgetCatalog { [DataMember(Name = "Name")] public string Name { get; set; } [DataMember(Name = "Widgets")] private List<Widget> WidgetSerializationList { get { return this._widgetBindingList.ToList<Widget>(); } set { this._widgetBindingList = new BindingList<Widget>(value); } } //these do not get serialized private BindingList<Widget> _widgetBindingList; public BindingList<Widget> WidgetBindingList { get { return this._widgetBindingList; } } public WidgetCatalog() { this.WidgetSerializationList = new List<Widget>(); } } So I'm serializing a private List<Widget> property, but the GET and SET accessors of the property are reading from, and writing to theBindingList<Widget> property. Will this even work? It seems like there should be a better way to do this.

• WinForms Form won't close on pressing X or Close() in C#

  I'm having a bit weird problem with WinForm which seems to refuse to close for some weird reason. I've got very simple gui which sometimes doesn't react for me pressing X or when i use events on buttons it even reaches Close() and does nothing.. private void buttonZapisz_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { string plik = textBoxDokumentDoZaladowania.Text; if (File.Exists(plik)) { string extension = Path.GetExtension(plik); string nazwaPliku = Path.GetFileName(plik); SqlMethods.databaseFilePut(plik, comboBoxTypDokumentu.Text, textBoxKomentarz.Text, sKlienciID, sPortfelID, extension, nazwaPliku); Close(); } } There are no events assigned to FormClosed or FormClosing. So how can I find out what's wrong. Sometimes X will work after the GUI is loaded but after i press Button to save some stuff to database it reaches Close() in that button event and it still is visible and does nothing. Can't use X, nor ALT+F4. I can go around GUI and choose other values for ComboBox without problem. • LLBLGenProDataSource : cannot see updates values of newly inserted item from a FormView

  After performing a FormView.InsertItem, I am unable to read the new values from the bound object within the LLBLGenProDataSource that the FormView is bound to. I have tracing turned on, I can see the insert happen, and the data does make it into the database, yet when I examine the contents of LLBLGenProDataSource.EntityCollection(0) (there is only one item in the collection) I do not see the values from the FormView.....yet, they are somehow being inserted into the database. • How should I provide access to this custom DAL?

  I'm writing a custom DAL (VB.NET) for an ordering system project. I'd like to explain how it is coded now, and receive some alternate ideas to make coding against the DAL easier/more readable. The DAL is part of an n-tier (not n-layer) application, where each tier is in it's own assembly/DLL. The DAL consists of several classes that have specific behavior. For instance, there is an Order class that is responsible for retrieving and saving orders. Most of the classes have only two methods, a "Get" and a "Save," with multiple overloads for each. These classes are marked as Friend and are only visible to the DAL (which is in it's own assembly). In most cases, the DAL returns what I will call a "Data Object." This object is a class that contains only data and validation, and is located in a common assembly that both the BLL and DAL can read. To provide public access to the DAL, I currently have a static (module) class that has many shared members. A simplified version looks something like this: Public Class DAL Private Sub New End Sub Public Shared Function GetOrder(OrderID as String) as OrderData Dim OrderGetter as New OrderClass Return OrderGetter.GetOrder(OrderID) End Function End Class Friend Class OrderClass Friend Function GetOrder(OrderID as string) as OrderData End Function End Class The BLL would call for an order like this: DAL.GetOrder("123456") As you can imagine, this gets cumbersome very quickly. I'm mainly interested in structuring access to the DAL so that Intellisense is very intuitive. As it stands now, there are too many methods/functions in the DAL class with similar names. One idea I had is to break down the DAL into nested classes: Public Class DAL Private Sub New End Sub Public Class Orders Private Sub New End Sub Public Shared Function Get(OrderID as string) as OrderData End Function End Class End Class So the BLL would call like this: DAL.Orders.Get("12345") This cleans it up a bit, but it leaves a lot of classes that only have references to other classes, which I don't like for some reason. Without resorting to passing DB specific instructions (like where clauses) from BLL to DAL, what is the best or most common practice for providing a single point of access for the DAL?

• WPF binding not updating until after another action

  I have an observable collection bound to a listbox in WPF. One of the options in the window is to use an OpenFileDialog to add an item to the listbox with certain properties. When I use the OpenFileDialog it immeditaely sets two of the properties of the new item in the observable collection. I am using INotifyPropertyChanged to update the listbox. These two new properties are set correctly and now the listbox should display the title contained in the new title property and the title textbox which is bound to the listbox should display the new title as well. However, neither displays the new title upon the closing of the OpenFileDialog and when I click on another item in the listbox and come back to the item I have just changed it updates the title textbox but the title displayed in the list box is not changed until i move the item in the list box that I want to change. Here is the Binding code. ItemsSource="{Binding Path=MyData, Mode=TwoWay, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}" And here is the implementation of the browse button that is not working (L1 being the listbox) private void browse_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { OpenFileDialog opf = new OpenFileDialog(); opf.ShowDialog(); MyData[L1.SelectedIndex].Title = System.IO.Path.GetFileNameWithoutExtension(opf.FileName); MyData[L1.SelectedIndex].Command = opf.FileName; } When I simply type in the text boxes and click out of them it updates the list box immediately with the new information I have put in. I also have a create new button and upon clicking it, it immediately adds a new item to the list box and updates its' properties. • Asynchronous Silverlight WCF callback

  I've created my own WCF service and I've successfully been able to talk to it via my Silverlight client. I ran into an interesting problem on my asynchronous callbacks though. When my callback is invoked, I can't update any UI controls with the dreaded invalid cross thread access Here's what my callback function looks like private void GetTimeCallBack( object sender, Talk.ClientBase<IService>.ClientEventArgs e ) { lblDisplay.Text = e.Object.ToString(); } A quick google search showed me that I have to do this instead. private void GetTimeCallBack( object sender, Talk.ClientBase<IService>.ClientEventArgs e ) { Dispatcher.BeginInvoke( () => lblDisplay.Text = e.Object.ToString() ); } Now everything works fine, but I wasn't expecting my callback to be running on a different thread. Will I always have to use the Dispatcher class in order to modify anything within my class or is this just limited to UI elements? I've not familiar with the Dispatcher class at all so I'm looking to understand it more.

I have movieclips that I scale up slightly on rollover, but if you hover over the edge of the movieclip it just sits there and flickers, continuously receiving mouseOver and mouseOut events. How do you deal with this?   My question is about one particular usage of static keyword. It is possible to use static keyword to cover a code block within a class which does not belong to any function. For example following code compiles: public class Test { private static final int a; static { a = 5; doSomething(a); } private static int doSomething(int x) { return (x+5); } } If you remove the static keyword it complains because the variable a is final. However it is possible to remove both final and static keywords and make it compile. It is confusing for me in both ways. How am I supposed to have a code section that does not belong to any method? How is it possible to invoke it? In general, what is the purpose of this usage? Or better, where can I find documentation about this?

• Securing a license key with RSA key.

  Hello, it's late, I'm tired, and probably being quite dense.... I have written an application that I need to secure so it will only run on machines that I generate a key for. What I am doing for now is getting the BIOS serial number and generating a hash from that, I then am encrypting it using a XML RSA private key. I then sign the XML to ensure that it is not tampered with. I am trying to package the public key to decrypt and verify the signature with, but every time I try to execute the code as a different user than the one that generated the signature I get a failure on the signature. Most of my code is modified from sample code I have found since I am not as familiar with RSA encryption as I would like to be. Below is the code I was using and the code I thought I needed to use to get this working right... Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as I am quite lost at this point the original code I was working with was this, this code works fine as long as the user launching the program is the same one that signed the document originally... CspParameters cspParams = new CspParameters(); cspParams.KeyContainerName = "XML_DSIG_RSA_KEY"; cspParams.Flags = CspProviderFlags.UseMachineKeyStore; // Create a new RSA signing key and save it in the container. I can drop the encryption part if I can get the signature part working right. I was using it as a backup to obfuscate the origin of the license code I am keying from. Does any of this make sense? • JSON, Ajax login and signup form problem, critique

  Here is my problem; indexdeneme2.php has two forms Sign up and Login form, and there is validation.js and login.js which are handling the AJAX and JSON response, there are validate.php and login.php which are my scripts for validating and login. When you sign up, it sends the data to validate.php perfectly and validate.php response with JSON perfectly, validate.js must show the error in #error div. validation.js works perfectly if it is working alone. I use same kind of script for login form. Login.php also works perfectly it responses with JSON and login.js shows the errors are appear in #errorlogin div. But this works when login.js works alone. When I try to work login.js and validate.js together, it is not working. validate.php and login.php works perfectly but login.js and validation.js are not working together. They can't handle the responses coming from php scripts. It is not showing the errors in #errorlogin and #error div. They intercept each other I guess. By the way if you can critique my login.php and validate.php I will be really appreciated. • Tree Node Checked behavior on a TreeView in Compact Framework 3.5 running on Windows Mobile 6.5

  I have been upgrading an existing .NET Windows Mobile application to use the 3.5 version of the compact framework and to run on Windows Mobile 6.5. I have a form with a TreeView. The TreeView.Checkboxes property is set to true so that each node has a check box. This gives no trouble in all previous versions of Windows Mobile. However, in version 6.5 when you click on a check box it appears to check and then uncheck instantaneously. But it only raises the AfterCheck event once. The only way I can get a check to stick is by double clicking it (which is the wrong behavior). Has anyone seen this behavior? Does anyone know of a workaround for it? I have included a simple test form. Dump this form into a Visual Studio 2008 Smart Device application targeted at Windows Mobile 6 to see what I mean.
