• [C#][Design] Appropriate programming design questions.

  I have a few questions on good programming design. I'm going to first describe the project I'm building so you are better equipped to help me out. I am coding a Remote Assistance Tool similar to TeamViewer, Microsoft Remote Desktop, CrossLoop. It will incorporate concepts like UDP networking (using Lidgren networking library), NAT traversal (since many computers are invisible behind routers nowadays), Mirror Drivers (using DFMirage's Mirror Driver (http://www.demoforge.com/dfmirage.htm) for realtime screen grabbing on the remote computer). That being said, this program has a concept of being a client-server architecture, but I made only one program with both the functionality of client and server. That way, when the user runs my program, they can switch between giving assistance and receiving assistance without having to download a separate client or server module. I have a Windows Form that allows the user to choose between giving assistance and receiving assistance. I have another Windows Form for a file explorer module. I have another Windows Form for a chat module. I have another Windows Form form for a registry editor module. I have another Windows Form for the live control module. So I've got a Form for each module, which raises the first question: 1. Should I process module-specific commands inside the code of the respective Windows Form? Meaning, let's say I get a command with some data that enumerates the remote user's files for a specific directory. Obviously, I would have to update this on the File Explorer Windows Form and add the entries to the ListView. Should I be processing this code inside the Windows Form though? Or should I be handling this in another class (although I have to eventually pass the data to the Form to draw, of course). Or is it like a hybrid in which I process most of the data in another class and pass the final result to the Form to draw? So I've got like 5-6 forms, one for each module. The user starts up my program, enters the remote machine's ID (not IP, ID, because we are registering with an intermediary server to enable NAT traversal), their password, and connects. Now let's suppose the connection is successful. Then the user is presented with a form with all the different modules. So he can open up a File Explorer, or he can mess with the Registry Editor, or he can choose to Chat with his buddy. So now the program is sort of idle, just waiting for the user to do something. If the user opens up Live Control, then the program will be spending most of it's time receiving packets from the remote machine and drawing them to the form to provide a 'live' view. 2. Second design question. A spin off question #1. How would I pass module-specific commands to their respective Windows Forms? What I mean is, I have a class like "NetworkHandler.cs" that checks for messages from the remote machine. NetworkHandler.cs is a static class globally accessible. So let's say I get a command that enumerates the remote user's files for a specific directory. How would I "give" that command to the File Explorer Form. I was thinking of making an OnCommandReceivedEvent inside NetworkHandler, and having each form register to that event. When the NetworkHandler received a command, it would raise the event, all forms would check it to see if it was relevant, and the appropriate form would take action. Is this an appropriate/the best solution available? 3. The networking library I'm using, Lidgren, provides two options for checking networking messages. One can either poll ReadMessage() to return null or a message, or one can use an AutoResetEvent OnMessageReceived (I'm guessing this is like an event). Which one is more appropriate?

• auth.getSession not working

  hi all, i am having troubles with calling auth.getSession in my proxy. It is being called from a iPhone connect client. When the proxy URL is invocated from the iphone, FB returns a 100 invalid parameter error to the proxy. However the 2nd attempt from iPhone yields success. Both times the proxy is doing the same code, only the auth_token is different. Doing a good search, shows that this is a problematic method. I have tried everything in code and even called in a iPhone expert to see if the problem is on the iPhone client. I have concentrated my efforts on the java api being the problem, however i believe the problem lies else where.   Im trying to provide gzip compression using varnish cache. But when I set content-encoding as gzip using my below mentioned configuration for varnish (default.vcl). Browser failed to download those content for which i set content-encoding as gzipped. • How best to modernize the 2002-era J2EE app?

  I have this friend.... I have this friend who works on a java ee application (j2ee) application started in the early 2000's. Currently they add a feature here and there, but have a large codebase. Over the years the team has shrunk by 70%. [Yes, the "i have this friend is". It's me, attempting to humorously inject teenage high-school counselor shame into the mix] Java, Vintage 2002 The application uses EJB 2.1, struts 1.x, DAO's etc with straight jdbc calls (mixture of stored procedures and prepared statements). No ORM. For caching they use a mixture of OpenSymphony OSCache and a home-grown cache layer. Over the last few years, they have spent effort to modernize the UI using ajax techniques and libraries. This largely involves javascript libaries (jquery, yui, etc). Client Side On the client side, the lack of upgrade path from struts1 to struts2 discouraged them from migrating to struts2. Other web frameworks became popular (wicket, spring , jsf). Struts2 was not the "clear winner". Migrating all the existing UI from Struts1 to Struts2/wicket/etc did not seem to present much marginal benefit at a very high cost. They did not want to have a patchwork of technologies-du-jour (subsystem X in Struts2, subsystem Y in Wicket, etc.) so developer write new features using Struts 1. Server Side On the server side, they looked into moving to ejb 3, but never had a big impetus. The developers are all comfortable with ejb-jar.xml, EJBHome, EJBRemote, that "ejb 2.1 as is" represented the path of least resistance. One big complaint about the ejb environment: programmers still pretend "ejb server runs in separate jvm than servlet engine". No app server (jboss/weblogic) has ever enforced this separation. The team has never deployed the ejb server on a separate box then the app server. The ear file contains multiple copies of the same jar file; one for the 'web layer' (foo.war/WEB-INF/lib) and one for the server side (foo.ear/). The app server only loads one jar. The duplications makes for ambiguity. Caching As for caching, they use several cache implementations: OpenSymphony cache and a homegrown cache. Jgroups provides clustering support Now What? The question: The team currently has spare cycles to to invest in modernizing the application? Where would the smart investor spend them? The main criteria: 1) productivity gains. Specifically reducing the time to develope new subsystems features and reduced maintenance. 2) performance/scalability. They do not care about fashion or techno-du-jour street cred. What do you all recommend? On the persistence side Switch everything (or new development only) to JPA/JPA2? Straight hibernate? Wait for Java EE 6? On the client/web-framework side: Migrate (some or all) to struts2? wicket? jsf/jsf2? As for caching: terracotta? ehcache? coherence? stick with what they have? how best to take advantage of the huge heap sizes that the 64-bit jvms offer? Thanks in advance.

• RavenDB - Can I create/query an index, from an application that doesn't share the CLR objects that were persisted?

  This post goes some way to answering this question (I'll include the answer later), but I was hoping for some further details. We have a number of applications that each need to access/manipulate data from Raven in their own way. Data is only written via the main web application. Other apps include batch-style tasks, reporting etc. In an attempt to keep each of these as de-coupled as possible, they are separate solutions. That being the case, how can I, from the reporting application, create indexes over the existing data, using my locally defined types? The answer from the linked question states As long as the structure of the classes you are deserializing into partially matches the structure of the data, it shouldn't make a difference. The RavenDB server doesn't care at all what classes you use in the client. You certainly could share a dll, or even share a portable dll if you are targeting a different platform. But you are correct that it is not necessary. However, you should be aware of the Raven-Clr-Type metadata value. The RavenDB client sets this when storing the original document. It is consumed back by the client to assist with deserialization, but it is not fully enforced It's the first part of that that I wanted clarification on. Do the object graphs for the docs on the server and types in my application have to match exactly? • Chinese Characters in email sent via PHP not showing up.

  hi All, a funny problem. I send mail via PHP from my testing server with Chinese chars in it and it sends perfectly. Encoding is utf-8. When I upload the same PHP file to another server and try to send from there, the e-mail will look 90% fine in one mail client (web-based mail actually, gmail), but in my mail client (Apple Mail) it's all gibberish even when I try changing the encoding in the mail client. I'm stuck here because everything works fine on one server, but not on another so I'm not sure where to start looking for solutions. What's even more puzzling is that on the production server, the mail looks somewhat ok (strange case of some characters not showing) but in other mail apps it looks like garbage. any idea where I can start looking to solve this? thanks for any help here!   Hi guys, here is some code I've been working on, basically I need to set up a auto e-mail that gets sent to a user after they fill in a form, which at the moment it is doing, but the HTML is not displaying as it should inside of the email client. I checked in Gmail, Outlook and Mac mail and none of them display the HTML correctly. Right now it's using the same map code as above. I've tried creating a shortcode that takes an address attribute and sets it as $mapAddress, but that didn't work. I believe it's because the map is already loaded by the time the Loop gets parsed. How can I tell Maps to "come back" to the post to get the proper address? My specialty lies in HTML & CSS, but Javascript befuddles me fairly easily, so please be explicit when explaining implementation. Bonus: A further goal is to have the locations' parent Page also include such a map, but have multiple markers representing the multiple locations. When taking more than one location, Google Maps only accepts latitude/longitude. I don't want my client to be concerned with coordinates, so I know there's got to be something I can do with the geocoding service so she can just input a list of addresses instead (into the same, or similar, shortcode solution developed for my main question). But I am extra-clueless about how to do that.

  Hi, I have a problem using SocketAsyncEventArgs model with .net sockets. Everything works great until the moment that the server wishes to close a client connection. I use following code for this: try { socket.Shutdown(SocketShutdown.Both); } catch { } // throws if client process has already closed finally { socket.Close(); } socket = null; Each connection is using two SocketAsyncEventArgs (one for send and one for receive) and after closing the connection they are returned to a pool from which they can be later reused. And here the problem starts, because when another connection is established and receive args are reused from the pool we get an exception: System.InvalidOperationException: "An asynchronous socket operation is already in progress using this SocketAsyncEventArgs instance."; at System.Net.Sockets.SocketAsyncEventArgs.StartOperationCommon(Socket socket) at System.Net.Sockets.Socket.ReceiveAsync(SocketAsyncEventArgs e) I've done some debugging and it appears that the connection closing code from the beginning of the question does not cancel Socket.ReceiveAsync operation that is in progress when the connection is closed. I've tried many combinations of Shutdown, Disconnect and Linger options for the socket but nothing worked. Any suggestions? Thanks

  I am trying to diagnose this exception. "System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80070008): Not enough storage is available to process this command. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070008) at System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingServices.AllocateUninitializedObject(RuntimeType objectType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingServices.AllocateUninitializedObject(Type objectType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Activation.ActivationServices.CreateInstance(Type serverType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Activation.ActivationServices.IsCurrentContextOK(Type serverType, Object[] props, Boolean bNewObj) at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.CThreadPool..ctor() at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleCommand.set_CommandTimeout(Int32 value) ... It does not look like any of the normal types of "storage" have hit any limits. The application is using about 400MB of memory, 70 threads, 2000 handles and the hard drive has many GB free. The machine is running Windows 2003 Enterprise server with 16GB of RAM so memory shouldn't be an issue. The application is running as a windows service so there are no GDI objects being used. Running out of GDI handles is a common cause of this exception. Database connections, commands & readers are all all wrapped with using blocks so they should be getting cleaned up correctly.

  Hi guys, Here is a scenario with asynchronous sockets that I dont't quite understand... I have 2 Tcp sockets, a client socket & a server socket. My server socket is bound & listening on a port. My client sockets connect to the server socket (using BeginConnect / EndConnect). I then send a message to the server using BeginSend(). On the server side, I don't do a Receive() or BeginReceive(). What happens is that my AsyncCallback specified for my BeginSend call gets invoked & its IAsyncResult tells me that it completed & the call to Socket.EndSend() does not raise any exception... Is there something that I don't get or shouldn't my AsyncCallback be called only if the BeginSend call actually sends something to the server (ie.: callback called after the server has received all bytes)? If there was no receive done on the server, shouldn't my callback be called after the sendtimeout expires and my call to Socket.EndSend then would raise an exception? Thanks

• Using Nortel Netdirect on Windows 7 64bit

  Does anyone know how to use Nortel Netdirect (Version 7.1.3.0) with Windows 7 64 bit (Home Premium)? There are several ways available to me for connecting, all of which work for me on a 32-bit XP machine: Nortel Contivity VPN client (v6_02.022). The installer appears to be 16-bit, so I can't even install it on a 64-bit machine. Web-based SSL via IE Web-based SSL via Firefox The Web-based SSL process is supposed to load Netdirect and start it up, establishing the VPN connection. Using Firefox, I'm able to authenticate with my smartcard, but when it tries to download the applet, the process stops with a message box saying that it couldn't download the zip file. If I run Firefox in Vista compatibility mode, it gets a little farther, and manages to start Netdirect, but then exits after notifying me that the netdirect adapter was not installed.   I have made an out-of-browser silverlight application which I want to automatically update every time there is a new .xap file uploaded to the server. When the user right-clicks the application and clicks on Updates, the default is set to "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to download and install them": This leads me to believe that it is possible to make my Silverlight application automatically detect if there is a new .xap file present on the server, and if there is, the Silverlight client will automatically ask the user if he would like to install it. This however is not the case. I upload a new .xap file and the Silverlight application does nothing. Even if I add this to my App.xaml.cs: -- private void Application_Startup(object sender, StartupEventArgs e) { this.RootVisual = new BaseApp(); if (Application.Current.IsRunningOutOfBrowser) { Application.Current.CheckAndDownloadUpdateAsync(); } } and update the .xap file, the Silverlight application does nothing. • Stateful vs. Stateless Webservices

  Imagine a more complex CRUD application which has a three-tier-architecture and communicates over webservices. The client starts a conversation to the server and doing some wizard like stuff. To process the wizard the client needs feedback given by the server. We started a discussion about stateful or stateless webservices for this approach. I made some research combined with my own experience, which points me to the question mentioned later. Stateless webservices having the following properties (in our case): + high scalability + high availability + high speed + rapid testing - bloated contract - implementing more logic on server-side But we can cross out the first two points, our application doesn't needs high scalability and availability. So we come to the stateful webservice. I've read a bunch of blogs and forum posts and the most invented point implementing a stateful webservice was: + simplifies contract (protocol) - bad testing - runs counter to the basic architecture of http But doesn't almost all web applications have these bad points? Web applications uses cookies, query strings, session ids, and all the stuff to avoid the statelessness of http. So why is it that bad for webservices?

• Send large JSON data to WCF Rest Service

  Hi I have a client web page that is sending a large json object to a proxy service on the same domain as the web page. The proxy (an ashx handler) then forwards the request to a WCF Rest Service. Using a WebClient object (standard .net object for making a http request) The JSON successfully arrives at the proxy via a jQuery POST on the client webpage. I have tried almost all methods specified on stackoverflow on google but I still cant find out where I am going wrong....I cannot upload a file greater than 64 kb!.. • Adding array of images to Firebase using AngularFire

  I'm trying to allow users to upload images and then store the images, base64 encoded, in firebase. I'm trying to make my firebase structured as follows: |--Feed |----Feed Item |------username |------epic |---------name,etc. |------images |---------image1, image 2, etc. However, I can't get the remote data in firebase to mirror the local data in the client. When I print the array of images to the console in the client, it shows that the uploaded images have been added to the array of images...but these images never make it to firebase. I've tried doing this multiple ways to no avail. I tried using implicit syncing, explicit syncing, and a mixture of both. I can;t for the life of me figure out why this isn;t working and I'm getting pretty frustrated.
